EXPLORE IN NATURE
from Ageing Well Guide
There are many beautiful parks and gardens in Wodonga where you can spend quality time with friends or family, wander among the trees, or sit and watch the world around you. Spending time in nature is beneficial for physical and mental wellbeing and can provide opportunities for social connections, too.
In Wodonga, we’re fortunate to have access to a variety of picturesque parks that have important facilities.
Some of our major parks with barbecue and public toilets include:
• Willow Park – Parking is located off Pearce St, Wodonga, in Kennedy Crt, near the barbecue and toilet facilities. This park offers a skate bowl for young children and teens. There is fitness equipment along the path and a playground.
• Les Stone Park - Parking is located off Lawrence St on Parkland Dve. This park offers barbecue and toilet facilities. It also has a playground featuring a ship and access to House Creek. Further up the park near Brockley St, there is a wetland with a jetty for fishing.
• Belvoir Park (Sumsion Gardens)
– Parking is located on Huon St, Wodonga. You can also access Belvoir Park off High St (Hume Freeway end) turning into Reuss Rd. Belvoir Park is home to a community wood-fired oven which is available to hire.
• Crossing Place Trail - The Crossing Place Trail is located near the original crossing places of the Murray River – at the junction of the Murray River and Bungambrawatha Creek and the Murray River and Oddies Creek. It is a 5.1 kilometre natural trail loop, featuring sculptural works from local Aboriginal artists. The trail is set in a natural environment of gum trees and keen observers will notice an array of wildlife including platypus, dunnarts, antechinus, water rats, wedge-tailed eagles and the rare black-billed spoonbills.
Public Toilets
Many of the city’s public toilets are open during the day and locked overnight for security reasons. The toilets are locked between 7.30pm and 8.30pm and are reopened between 5.30am and 6.30am.
Community Gardens
• Birallee Park Neighbourhood House - A large community garden precinct has been developed at 39 Emerald Avenue, West Wodonga, with more than 40 garden beds on site. An allotment which is already fully stocked with nutritious soil is provided to anyone interested in growing their own food.
admin@birhouse.com.au if you’re interested in getting involved and adopting a plot of your own.
• Bhutanese Community Market Garden. The Bhutanese Community Farm is on the banks of the Murray River on Gateway Island, Wodonga. Rangers are generally available between 8am and 3pm Monday to Friday if you would like to visit and find out more.
