Under the NDIS, people with a disability and their families and carers will have control over what, when and where they spend their funds.

To find out more on eligibility requirements, use the access checker on the NDIS website, where you’ll also find resources for those with a disability, for parents or carers, and for service providers.

Businesses are encouraged to use the self-assessment tool online to help you make your business more accessible. Download fact sheets for both business owners and service staff or contact the council.

VOLUNTEER AT NATIVE GARDEN

POOL FENCES MUST BE SAFE

Help your environment and your community by volunteering for Our Native Garden, a not‐for‐profit organisation based at Wodonga Waste Transfer Station.

Is your existing swimming pool or spa fence still safe, well maintained and compliant? If you are unsure, Wodonga Building Services can inspect, advise and issue a compliance certificate.

The group is dedicated to developing balanced ecosystems which help create and maintain a healthy environment for plants, animals and people.

Please phone (02) 6022 9300 to find out more.

MENTAL RESILIENCE October is Mental Health Month and a great opportunity to build on the resounding success of The Resilience Project which visited Wodonga schools and workplaces in July. For tips on staying mentally healthy, follow the Healthy Together Wodonga Facebook page, or share your photos about a moment that makes you happy using the hash tag #dismoment.

Get your work on display Are you a local artist and want an opportunity to have your work shown in a high visibility area? Wodonga Council invites artists to submit an expression of interest, including proposed images or conceptual designs, and addressing the criteria of the Open Gallery project. Your work will be displayed

on the outside wall of the Wodonga Library. Suzy Plummer’s work, pictured, was the inaugural artist to be displayed as part of the project. For further information, or to receive a project brief, please contact the cultural development officer at the council on (02) 6022 9300.

It grows not just the big trees, but all the essential understorey plants such as lilies, grasses and daisies. You can buy from their list of plants recommended for the Wodonga area or their BushTucker list. Our Native Garden has partnered with Wodonga Council and community groups to produce plants for revegetation projects, and provide training in biodiversity protection and enhancement.

Walk to School month is here

Participating in Walk to School is a great way to promote healthy behaviours in children. To help your child achieve the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day: l Walk with your child to and from school; l Arrange for your child to walk with another family, allowing them to socialise and share their journey; l If you live a long way from school or have limited time, drive part way to school and walk the rest; and, l Mix it up – walk, ride or ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES

scoot with your kids to school. Walk to School can help children adopt physical activity habits for life. It can also help reduce traffic congestion, parking difficulties and the associated environmental impacts. Children can enter fun walking theme competitions each week, and have a chance of winning some fantastic prizes – see the Walk to School website and Facebook page for details. MORE INFORMATION walktoschool.vic.gov.au

YOUR COUNCIL YOUR VOTE Residents aged over 18 and ratepayers of Wodonga are reminded voting is compulsory in the local council election this month and you may be fined if you don’t vote.

Local schools are taking to the footpath this month as part of Walk to School, which encourages primary-school students to walk, ride or scoot to and from school as often as possible. Many schools are planning healthy breakfasts, or arranging drop-off points close to school for those who live too far away to walk or who live out of town.

Learn about native plants including some great bush foods such as Chocolate, Pale Vanilla and Kangaroo Apple at the Spring Celebration on Saturday, October 8 from noon to 3pm. Tour the nursery, watch potting demonstrations and join the free barbecue lunch.

Not violent, not silent Inspiring domestic violence survivor and campaigner Dr Ann O’Neill, pictured, will be the keynote speaker at the Border’s White Ribbon Ball in November. Significant increases in family violence on the Border in recent years prompted local police, AlburyCity and Wodonga Council to join forces to last year hold the inaugural White Ribbon Ball. Last year’s ball in Wodonga attracted 200 people and raised $25,000, which was invested back into

the community through the Prevention of Violence against Women Grants program. This year’s ball is on Saturday, November 12, at 6.30pm at the Commercial Club, Albury. Tickets are now on sale and will raise vital funds to help prevent domestic violence in the community.

BUY TICKETS wod.city/WhiteRibbonBall2016

To help voters remember what to do during the 2016 council election, the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) has introduced the free Vic Election Alert. Sign up via the website. October 4 to October 6: Ballot packs are mailed to enrolled voters in random order—voters in the same household may receive their ballot packs on different days. 6pm Friday, October 21: Voters in Wodonga must have posted or handdelivered their completed ballot material by this time for their vote to count.
