The railway arrived in Wodonga in November 1873.

Australian Heritage Week will be held from Saturday, April 16 to Sunday, April 24 to celebrate Australia’s unique heritage.

The north-eastern line was then the longest main trunk line constructed in Victoria.

To mark the annual national celebration, Uta Wiltshire of the Wodonga Historical Society takes a look back at one of Wodonga’s most significant infrastructure developments, the north-eastern railway.

The arrival of the rail in Wodonga was celebrated all day and into the night.

to the Melbourne train and vice versa. The Melbourne side of the platform was extended to 819ft (250 metres).

A luncheon for invited guests was served in a large marquee near the station.

There was also a high fence built down the centre to ensure transferring passengers were all seen by Customs.

Four trains had come up from Melbourne, picking up along the way. The Colonial Governor, Sir George Bowen was one of the official guests at a gala ball that night in the Goods Shed. Sir Bowen stayed overnight at De Kerilleau homestead and marked the occasion by planting a Moreton Bay fig tree in the grounds which still stands today. At the time, NSW had laid line from Sydney to Goulburn leaving a gap of 200 miles (Goulburn to Albury) which would not be completed until 1880.

An image of the festivities at Wodonga on the completion of the northeastern railway, as published in The Illustrated Australian News in 1873. Wodonga and Albury were finally connected by rail in June 1883. Until then passengers were transferred by coach. Until Federation, customs were payable on interstate movement of goods similar to international travel today.

Passengers had to submit their luggage for scrutiny by Customs House officials at Wodonga, on the platform, which for some years did not have a roof.

Melbourne to Sydney the increased traffic meant that in August, 1883 the existing Wodonga railway station was considered inadequate.

Hot sun or rain had to be contended with.

Extensions and a customs shed on the platform were built to allow transfer of goods from the Sydney train

With the interstate connection from

The railways went on to become one of the bigger employers in Wodonga and homes were built for married men and their families in South St close to their place of employment. In the early days young boys were employed as knockers-up before alarm clocks were affordable and reliable. They would knock on doors to ensure that the railway men woke up in time for their shifts and advise them of their schedule for the day.

Born in Sale, Percy attended Wodonga State School and was a driver before he left for war. He embarked from Melbourne on board RMS Moldavia on October 5, 1915 and was a Private with the 21st Australian Infantry Battalion at the time of his death.

His name is engraved on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial in France, and on panel 95 in the commemorative area at the Australian War Memorial. The street banners commemorate 100 years since Australia’s involvement in the First World War, and the sacrifices made by the people of Wodonga. They will be used each Anzac Day until 2018, which will be 100 years since the war ended.

engage in activities that enhance their mental and physical health.

That’s exactly what the Wodonga Men’s Shed is hoping to achieve through a $230,000 appeal launched last month.

“We have helped many members over the years that have lost loved ones, lost jobs or have been staring depression in the face,” he said.

With a growing membership of more than 60 men, the group has outgrown its current location in Emerald Ave and is hoping to raise $230,000 for a new home through donations, grants and fundraising activities.

“This is a fantastic environment where men are able to work on meaningful projects and talk openly about personal and private issues.”

After extensive community engagement in 2014, the Wodonga CBA Revitalisation Plan was adopted by the council, and is now ready to be included into the Wodonga Planning Scheme, using an Activity Centre Zone through the Planning Scheme Amendment C124.

The zone provides a clear, concise and consistent planning policy that is easy to understand and implement for the development community. It also provides certainty to both the council and the community about what the future revitalised CBA will look like.

STRATEGIC PLANNING UPDATE CURRENT STATUS

Wodonga Planning Scheme Rewrite Amendment C123

The Amendment updates the Wodonga Planning Scheme following a review and will introduce a revised local planning policy framework and reference recently adopted council strategies.

Public exhibition closed on March 18, 2016. Council is considering submissions and will report its findings to the April Ordinary Council meeting.

CBA Revitalisation Plan Implementation – Proposed Activity Centre Zone Amendment C124

The amendment applies to all land within the Central Business Area of Wodonga. The Amendment will implement the adopted Wodonga CBA Revitalisation Plan and Wodonga CBA Revitalisation Design Guide by replacing the multiple land use zonings in the CBA with a single zone for better clarity, simplicity and certainty for the community.

The amendment is scheduled for public exhibition between March 24 and April 22, 2016. The Amendment will be available for public inspection at council offices or at www.delwp.vic.gov.au/ public-inspection. Written submissions about the Amendment must be received by council by April 22, 2016.

Leneva Baranduda Precinct Structure Plan

The Leneva Baranduda growth area is a long standing strategic direction for Wodonga. The Metropolitan Planning Authority (MPA) in conjunction with the Council is preparing the precinct structure plan (PSP) for the LenevaBaranduda PSP area. A PSP is a ‘big picture’ plan that sets the vision for developing new communities and is the primary plan for guiding urban development in growth areas. It identifies broad transport networks, employment and activity centres, residential areas and a public space network.

The MPA is currently collating a number of background technical studies to better inform the future urban form of the Precinct. The PSP and its supporting documentation and plans will be placed on formal exhibition to seek comment from stakeholders and the community in mid-2016.

Wodonga Growth Strategy

As one of the fastest growing regional cities in Victoria, Wodonga is expected to double its population within 25 years. The Wodonga Growth Strategy is a key guiding document that seeks to respond to the challenges and opportunities this population growth presents.

Public consultation on the draft Growth Strategy concluded in December 2015. The final Growth Strategy is anticipated for council adoption by mid-2016.

ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES

Three years ago, the council commenced the revitalisation strategy for Wodonga’s CBA to enable the city centre to grow over the next 10 to 15 years.

The proposed Activity Centre Zone incorporates the CBA Revitalisation Plan’s objectives into the Wodonga Planning Scheme. It replaces multiple land use zonings in the CBA with a single zone while retaining all existing permitted land uses within the city centre.

Albury Wodonga Health chairman Lou Lieberman, pictured right, has been appointed as patron for the fundraising campaign, which hopes to raise $50,000 by end of the year.

PROJECT OR AMENDMENT PROJECT DESCRIPTION

IMPLEMENTING THE CBA PLAN NEW ACTIVITY CENTRE ZONE

The Activity Centre Zone arranges the CBA into a number of precincts, to identify the types of uses encouraged within the precinct. Each precinct will include objectives and guidelines to guide future development and to create a more consistent approach to development outcomes across the CBA. The current permitted uses remain unchanged in the Activity Centre Zone. The amendment C124 is available for public exhibition at council offices and council website at wodonga. vic.gov.au until April 22, 2016. Members of the community can make a submission to the council during this public exhibition period.

was not repairable we learnt more about how it worked and why it had stopped working.”

A building permit ensures that: • The builder is registered and insured; • Documentation is adequate and independently reviewed; • Key stages of the works are independently inspected; and • Once complete, the works are suitable for occupation/ use.

The program uses basketball to engage local disadvantaged or at-risk youth build skills and confidence, and identify and embrace positive opportunities in their lives and local community. The next eight week tournaments are planned for May and then July at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre.

The night starts at 7.30pm and ends about 11.30pm, with a bus taking participants safely home. The chair is not required to attend all of the tournament nights, rather they oversee the committee setup and management of the tournament. Ideally the chair will have experience on committees or boards and overseeing people. For more information, please contact Wodonga@ midnightbasketball.org.au or call Rachel Habgood on (02) 6022 9701.

CATCH A SHOW DON’T MISS

THE TEN SOPRANOS – TIME TO WIN TOUR

A camera on Gallipoli In 1915 soldier and surgeon Sir Charles Ryan captured the Australian experience on Gallipoli via a series of candid photographs (see Gallipoli Peninsula, above). Ryan’s sensitivity, his empathy with those on both sides, and his eye for the remarkable – and the remarkable in the everyday – are apparent in his photographic work.

These images from a Australian War Memorial travelling exhibition reveal the true spirit of Anzac. Exhibition: Friday, April 1 to Saturday, April 30 Opening: Saturday, April 2 10am This exhibition contains graphic sensitive material that children may find confusing or upsetting.

Art Buzz for little hands Creative visual art workshops for little hands, relating to the current exhibition. For ages three to five years and their parent/guardian. Bookings essential. When: Fridays, April 15, 22 and 29 from 10.30am to 11.30am. Cost: $5 per family Enquiries: (02) 6022 9600

Tangibility/Abstraction Melbourne-based artist Petra Nicel presents a new body of work that crosses the boundaries of photo media and installation. Nicel’s imagery includes suggestions of cloud-like forms and substances that give the sensation of floating, and of experiencing the unknown (see Fragile, right) An immersive experience, this exhibition includes a collection of immaculate images and moments that present as the familiar, and yet the unknown. The contrasting elements throughout the show grant its success.

This show is not an imitation; it is original, world class and beautifully delivered! Possibly the most powerful all female group in Australia. The group is led by The Singers’ singer, Penny Pavlakis, whose critically acclaimed talent brings to the stage star quality few can match.

When: Friday, April 15 at 8pm Where: The Cube Wodonga Cost: $56, concession $46 and student $36 Bookings essential: The Cube Wodonga box office on (02) 6022 9311 or at thecubewodonga.com.au/tickets

AND THEN HE CAME HOME Be among the first to hear from Lillian as she shares her experience of returning home from World War I, falling in love with Lenny - an Aboriginal Anzac whom she nursed at Gallipoli - and the challenges they faced in a black and white postwar Australia. Performed by local actor Natasha Quinn. View the exhibition A camera on Gallipoli

and meet the actor and playwright after the show. When: Wednesday, April 20 at 11am Where: Arts Space Wodonga Cost: $10 adults, $5 students, and teachers free Bookings essential: The Cube Wodonga box office on (02) 6022 9311 or at thecubewodonga.com.au/tickets

GIGGLE AND HOOT AND FRIENDS Jimmy Giggle, Hoot and Hootabelle are setting off again on another giggle-icious live stage adventure with their friends the Bananas in Pyjamas. At long last the Giggle-mobile will make its way to Wodonga for the first time. In fact, this is the first time they have been on a regional tour! And be on the lookout for Jimmy Giggle-ini ... the world’s greatest magician!

Exhibition: Friday, May 6 to Saturday, May 28 Opening: Friday, May 6 at 5.30pm Artist floor talk: Saturday, May 7 at 10am

When: Saturday, April 23 at 11am and 1pm Where: The Cube Wodonga Cost: $32.90, toddlers 18 months and younger free Bookings essential: The Cube Wodonga box office on (02) 6022 9311 or at thecubewodonga.com.au/tickets
