Many people volunteer to contribute or give back to the community, while others volunteer as part of their studies, to get some experience that may lead to employment, to socialise or network, or as part of their workplace. They make a significant financial contribution too – for every dollar invested in volunteerism there is an estimated return of $4. In 2016-2017, the council invested $90,000 in volunteerism – this equates to $360,000 of value to the organisation and the community. This includes human capital but also the physical, social and symbolic capital that volunteers contribute either to an organisation or the community. You can nominate someone for an individual or a team award, or in one of three categories (community service, sport and recreation, and environment/science/ technology).
In 2016, the Wodonga Volunteer Team of the Year went to Sal Kaiwai and Ryan Dodd for their commitment to Wodonga Storm Junior Rugby League (pictured and on cover with children Destiny, Rain, Constance, Oceana, Phoenix, Azalea, and Raziel. Absent - Mosiah). Nominations for the
volunteer awards close at 5pm on Friday, April 21. The awards will be presented at the Volunteer Fair at The Cube Wodonga on Saturday, May 13 during National Volunteer Week. NOMINATIONS: wod.city/VolAwards2017
Council marks National Apology Day Members of the Wodonga Aboriginal Network (WAN) joined councillors to mark National Apology Day in February. Nominations are now open for the 2017 Wodonga Volunteer of the Year awards for people who have made an outstanding contribution to the community in the Wodonga region.
Last year the council adopted the Wodonga Aboriginal Reconciliation Plan which aims to build on
the strengths of the council’s achievements in actively advancing reconciliation. It comes ahead of National Sorry Day which is held on May 26. The annual event remembers and commemorates the mistreatment of the
country’s indigenous population. On May 26, 1997, the Bringing Them Home report was tabled in Parliament, the result of an inquiry by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission into the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.

TIME FOR FLU VACCINE Improved rail a boon for all An improved rail service would mean an increase in passenger numbers and an economic boost for the region, according to a study undertaken by the local councils and action groups.
The flu season is fast approaching and residents and businesses are urged to prepare now autumn has arrived. Immunisation is a safe and effective way of protecting our community against harmful disease, including the flu. The typical work environment provides ideal conditions for the virus to thrive, and the flu is expected to infect more than 23,000 Australians each year. Wodonga Council has a mobile immunisation service which provides onsite vaccination to businesses across North East Victoria and Southern NSW with 10
FAST FLU FACTS • There is no live virus in the flu vaccine, so you cannot get the flu virus from the flu vaccine • The composition of the vaccine changes every year and the new 4 strain (quadrivalent) flu vaccine is offered again this year • The flu vaccine is safe for pregnant women at all stages of their pregnancy or more staff for a fee. The Hume Corridor Passenger Rail Study was a collaborative effort between AlburyCity, Wodonga, Wangaratta and Benalla councils with the Border Rail Action Group (BRAG). The study, which included more than 1100 responses to a community survey late last year, found that the sub-standard nature of the passenger rail service resulted in about 385,000 less train trips. “This study has allowed us to really understand our communities’ needs and expectations... and also how often and why they use it,” Wodonga Mayor Cr Speedie said. Changeover to cleaner and greener LED streetlights Wodonga is building a cleaner and greener streetlight network with new LED streetlights being installed between now and July. The roll-out schedule will be programmed on a weekly basis. It takes less than five minutes to replace a street light, so any disruptions to traffic flow should be minimal. The lights and hardware, worth $600,000, will contribute to a saving of 773 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year – equivalent to removing 570 cars from the road each year for 20 years - and cost savings of about $3 million over the life of the assets. Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said the council was leading the way in reducing
FINAL RATES INSTALMENT Reminder notices will be issued later this month for the fourth rate instalment of the 2016-2017 rates and charges. Payment is due Wednesday, May 31 and should include any arrears. To receive your rates notice by email, find out about concessions or to sign up for direct debit, visit wod.city/ Payments-Rates
greenhouse emissions and responding to climate change. “This project is the single largest project the council can participate in to reduce electricity costs,” she said. “The new lights perform better, last longer and are more than twice as efficient as the existing mercury vapour lights.” The LEDs will provide more uniform light along Wodonga’s streets while reducing glare and light pollution. The council allocated $1.2 million in the 20162017 budget for the LED replacement program. It is projected the program will have paid for itself within six years.
Register your dog or cat before annual doorknock The annual animal doorknock will be in May following annual registrations due on Monday, April 10. Regicheck will conduct the doorknock on behalf of Wodonga Council – and are expecting to meet many Jack Russells along the way as they are the most popular dog breed in Wodonga. Each staff member is trained and will carry identification. They can provide advice
and information about how important it is to register your pet – but please note thewy will not be collecting money, and all registration forms must be lodged with Wodonga Council. Owners who don’t re-register their pet (whether it’s a dog or cat) risk a $311 fine. If an animal is found lost or roaming, rangers return it to its owner, so it’s also a timely reminder to ensure all pets are microchipped and that
owners keep their details upto-date. Registration fees provide a service for owners to report lost and found pets, for council officers to respond to calls about wandering animals or noise complaints, and to monitor pet shops and boarding kennels.

Slow, stop, obey when school’s back
GIVING YOUNG MUSICIANS A PUSH START SERVING UP AN ACE Local tennis player Ryan Hooper was awarded a Young Achiever Award in March - an award to help young people pursue their sport at a state or national level.
When school returns for Term 2, motorists are being urged to drive safely around school crossings.
Ryan first applied to be a ballkid in March 2014 for the 2015 Australian Open and progressed through the first two levels. Then in 2015, Ryan applied again and this time was selected to join the main squad for the 2016 Australian Open. He applied and was successful again for the 2017 Australian Open, and was ballkid for a semifinal.
Wodonga Council’s ‘SLOW, STOP, OBEY’ campaign targets drivers who do the wrong thing in school zones. Wodonga Council Team Leader Compliance Mr Craig McClanahan said despite obvious signage and warnings, drivers continue to risk the safety of local children and parents as they fail to obey the rules. “Between June and August last year, a total of 60 people either failed to stop, or came to a sudden stop within school crossings across the municipality,” Mr McClanahan said. “With 22 school crossings in Wodonga, this is a concerning statistic.” MAP OF CROSSINGS wod.city/SchoolCrossings

NURSERY GRANT Our Native Garden Nursery has won a $28,000 Australian Government grant to employ an operations manager and build a sheltered potting area, propagation igloo and metal tables to hold plant stock. ALL ABOUT BUILDING PERMITS The Building Act 1993 (the act) and Building Regulations 2006 (the regulations) legislate that most building work is subject to the issuing of a building permit. This includes new construction, most alterations, all swimming pools and spas, demolitions and removals.
The popular ‘Just Paint’ program has returned to Arts Space Wodonga this year where primary school students can stop by on Wednesdays during school terms from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and... just paint! Cost is $10 per student.
Next step for growth corridor Wodonga Council will seek authorisation from the Minister for Planning to prepare an amendment to the Wodonga Planning Scheme to include the Leneva Baranduda Precinct Structure Plan. This plan provides a framework for more than 1000 hectares of land
including proposed locations for housing, schools, open space, bike and pedestrian crossings, infrastructure and retail centres within the natural environment of the Leneva Valley. An information session will be held with interested parties, community and affected land owners before the amendment is exhibited.
A building permit ensures that: • The builder is registered and insured; • Documentation is adequate and independently reviewed; • Key stages of the works are independently inspected; and, • Once complete, the works are suitable for use. Undertaking building work without obtaining the necessary building permit is a serious offence and can result in severe penalties, including a court appearance before a magistrate and prescribed penalty of up to $10,000. A common misconception is works with a value of less than $5000 are exempt. This is not correct. If you
are unsure if your project requires a building permit, please contact a member of the building services team on (02) 6022 9300. The process The regulations state that a building permit cannot be issued for works constructed without a building permit. To legitimise illegal works an application and plans are required to be submitted to the council. An inspection will then take place and if further works are required, you will be instructed to undertake these. If the works substantially meets the regulations, a letter will be issued stating that the council will take no further action. If the works cannot be made compliant, an order will be issued for their removal. For more information, please contact a member of the building services team on (02) 6022 9300.

The amendment was approved by the Minister for Planning on December 22, 2016, and is now implemented into the Wodonga Planning Scheme.
CBA Revitalisation Plan Implementation – Proposed Activity Centre Zone Amendment C124
The amendment applies to all land within the Central Business Area of Wodonga. The amendment will implement the adopted Wodonga CBA Revitalisation Plan and Wodonga CBA Revitalisation Design Guide and replace the multiple land use zonings in the CBA with a single zone for better clarity, simplicity and certainty for the community.
The amendment was adopted by the council in August and submitted to the Minister for Planning for approval.
Housing Strategy
In order to meet the forecasted growth for Wodonga, and to meet the adopted Wodonga Growth Strategy’s objectives of liveability and prosperity, council is developing a housing strategy to ensure that the city continues to provide a consistent supply of residential land, offers choice, diversity, affordability, quality and sustainability for housing. The primary aim of the Housing Strategy is to encourage a range of residential development outcomes that meet the city’s projected growth in a sustainable manner.
Both the State Government’s Hume Regional Growth Plan and council’s Growth Strategy seek to develop a long term land use vision for Wodonga in order to promote the city’s prosperity from industrial development perspective. Industrial Land Strategy
Central Business Area Car Parking Plan
The industrial sector is the largest employer of the city, the long term prosperity of the city depends on the sustainable growth of the sector. The Industrial Land Strategy is undertaken by council to ensure such objective is achieved.
The project commenced in February. It is currently scheduled to present initial findings to the council by mid-2017.
The project commenced in February. It is currently scheduled to present initial findings to the council by mid-2017.
As a result of the rapid changes and growth experienced in the past few years in the Wodonga CBA, the project aims to leverage off the commercial confidence in the CBA to encourage further growth, without compromising traffic movement and parking in the CBA. The project seeks balanced needs between the provision of a full car parking requirement for development against the economic cost of The project commenced in March. The tournament will be held from Wednesday, April 12 to Monday, April 17, and will be contested by teams from across the country.
“Wodonga Council is committed to providing high quality play spaces in our city,” said Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie. “Before any major changes are made to these play spaces, we want your feedback on how the playgrounds are used – both now and in the future.”
