BRIAN FLIES HIGH WITH EAGLE AWARD Wodonga Council was pleased to announce Brian Trebilcock as an Eagle Award winner at February’s council meeting. The award recognises people in our city who, through their volunteer work, are making a difference to the community. Mr Trebilcock has made a large contribution to our city, donating around 300 hours of labor each year to maintain David Winterbottom Reserve. Some of the tasks he has worked on include removal of woody weeds from House Creek, liaising with council to improve the reserve, installing public art, as well as maintenance of timber furniture. Mr Trebilcock has also helped secure grants to build assets in David Winterbottom Park, including a shelter shed with seating and a nature walking trail along the creekside.
“I would like to thank Joyce my wife and daughter Lynette who have always supported and helped in my extra activities as have family members,” he said. “Kathy and Neil Offner have been initial volunteers in Friends of David Winterbottom Park group along with Michael Fraser, Helen and Eddy Voogt. “Our attraction to Wodonga, apart from the provision of excellent shopping and support services was the inclusion and extent of parklands and access paths providing a pleasant environment to residential areas, which is a credit to the early planners of Wodonga. “The encouragement and assistance of groups like Friends of Willow Park, Clyde
Cameron Park, Joy Bayes of the Rail Trail Group, Jill Dawson, and in particular Anne Stelling and Wodonga Urban Landcare Network who encouraged my involvement in ecosystem activities, in particular David Winterbottom Park. “The initial consideration, upgrades and maintenance was through the support and input of Michael Power, the council’s Team Leader Gardens, to whom we extend our thanks along with the assistance of Richard Lamb, Manager Outdoor Operations and the Council Community Grants. “We trust that David Winterbottom Park will be a community asset enjoyed by all. “I acknowledge this community eagle award which has been through the assistance and volunteering of many people and the council.”
Kiewa St market benefits both sides of the Border The Kiewa St Market is on Sundays from 8.30am to noon. Located in the Kiewa St car park Albury, there’s something for everyone.

New city park enjoyed by all ages Impressive was the word Peter Richardson used to describe the city’s new green space named in honour of his family, in particular his late grandfather Robert Richardson. Robert, a past Wodonga Shire councillor who strongly supported the building of new municipal stockyards in Wodonga, had a long history of serving the community and operating a cattle business. Peter (pictured on front cover with son Andrew and grandsons Daniel and Jack) said the design of the replacement Richardson Park within Junction Square was well thought out,

Meet Wodonga’s newest councillor
Wodonga Council has welcomed new councillor Brian Mitchell, who was appointed to the role on a countback in January. Cr Mitchell vowed to do his best to serve the community. He replaces Tim Quilty who resigned from the council in December after being elected to the Victorian Upper House. Returning Officer Katrina Collins conducted the countback from a possible 17 eligible candidates.
Creating a safer trail for cyclists, pedestrians Work has commenced on a new asphalt and sealed surface to link Wodonga’s CBA to the High Country Rail Trail.
The countback involved the distribution of 3492 ballot papers received by Cr Quilty from the October 2016 general election.
Wodonga Council received $594,550 towards the CBA Tourism Cycling Links project as part of the Regional Jobs and Investment Package from the Coalition Government.
After the distribution of preferences, an absolute majority of votes was obtained by Brian Mitchell.
The cost of the project is $1,189,100 and involves the construction of an 8km sealed track, along with car park and rest areas to increase Wodonga and the North East region’s attraction as an outdoor tourism destination.
Cr Mitchell will fill the extraordinary vacancy for Wodonga Council until the next election of council.
The works will create a new sealed surface from Osburn St to Whytes Rd,
which connects with the High Country Rail Trail, a 30km trail along the foreshore of Lake Hume and one of the most spectacular trails in Australia. The trail will provide a vastly improved surface with upgraded crossing points to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists. It also means road bikes and other hybrids can enjoy the trail, instead of just mountain bikes, meaning more people can enjoy the track. Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said the project would be well received in the local community and is well targeted for the sport of cycling to flourish in the region.
“It really connects us to the other fantastic trails right across the region,” she said. Drainage is also being upgraded at various sections of the rail trail to improve the quality of the surface. There will be two major rest areas including seating, tables, shelter, drinking water access and bike racks. Landscaping works will be carried out along parts of the trail, including trees for shade and furniture. Work is due for completion by June 30, 2019.

New operator for reuse shop Aware Programs have taken over the reuse shop at Wodonga Transfer Station. A grand reopening was held on February 18. Aware’s team includes local people with disabilities, some long-term job seekers and people who are retraining for new careers. The shop gives new life to many items which are dropped off at the recycling centre. ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES
Dylan Muggivan from Aware Programs said it was an exciting new venture for his team and builds upon its success with operating the Upcycle and Recycle Shop at the Albury Waste Management Centre. “It provides an opportunity to service the local Wodonga community and continue to support our workers,” he said. The shop will offer preloved treasures as well as Aware’s well-known and loved
furniture made from recycled pallets. Mr Muggivan hopes to later run a range of sustainability programs at the shop similar to ones they offer in Albury. The not-for-profit group has a three-year contract to run the shop, which will operate from 10am to 3pm every day. Closed on all public holidays and between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day each year. CITYLIFE

AUSTRALIA DAY 2019 Known as an advocate for the prevention of family violence, Rupinder Kaur was named as Wodonga's Citizen of the Year. As a past victim of family abuse, it is her strength, courage and commitment to making sure women stand up for their rights and confront family violence, which stands her apart. Rupinder's dedication to the cause extends to rescuing girls and women exposed to family/domestic violence, providing them with shelter and food by allowing them to stay at her home until government services are made available. She has dedicated countless hours and efforts to overcome tough situations that victims find themselves in and works hard to link these women with service organisations which can help. Born in India, Rupinder came to Australia and settled in Wodonga in 2007. She became a proud Australian citizen in 2013. The nursing graduate and second year law student is a community advocate for the prevention of family violence. A role model for youth everywhere, Sheldon Smith was named Young Citizen of the Year. The 20-year-old devoted nine years with the 3rd Wodonga Scout Group (and from now on as a cub leader). His dedication to the local scout movement saw him receive the Queen Scout Award in 2017, the highest possible award in venturer scouting that requires more than 300 hours of service. The 3rd Wodonga Scouts Group received the Community Organisation of the Year award.
