ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF COUNTRY In the spirit of reconciliation, Wodonga Council acknowledges the traditional owners of this land on which it stands, and pays its respects to their Elders past, present and future, for they hold the memories, the traditions and the culture of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
Born in Bhutan, Teju fled the politically unstable country as a child, before spending more than 17 years in a refugee camp in Nepal. Then in 2009, he and his family were some of the first Bhutanese refugees to settle in Albury-Wodonga. Teju wasted no time when he arrived, becoming involved in a number of community organisations. He is a longserving President of the Bhutanese Association, a member of various local and national councils, and a champion for creating positive change.
In 2014, he was elected the first chairman of the Albury-Wodonga Ethnic Communities Council, after years behind-the-scenes establishing the group. Teju also received the great honour of presenting at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva in 2015, and has since played an instrumental role in representing ethnic communities in the region. The Young Citizen of the Year went to both Alannah McKeown and Jye McBurnie. At only 20, Alannah has already achieved great sporting success, representing Australia in the pool at an international level. Her first competitive swim event was with Special Olympics in 2012, followed by the Asia Pacific Games in 2013 where she represented Australia, and the National Games in Melbourne in 2014.

Teju Chouhan was named Wodonga Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day awards in recognition of the dedication and energy he has poured into the local community.
Is your child fully immunised? Under the No Jab, No Play laws in Victoria, children must be fully immunised to return to childcare or preschool after the holiday season. Immunisations are free and you don’t need an appointment – just bring your Medicare card and your child’s health record book.

Senior Secondary College, Jye McBurnie has made a significant contribution to the Wodonga community through his fund-raising for cancer. In 2013 he took part in the World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation (and again in 2015), raised $2000 for cancer research in 2014, and in 2016 raised a further $2500 (of which $1000 stayed here on the Border). Jye has recently joined the RED Carpet youth committee and helped organise SoundOut 2016. Local, non-profit organisation Aware Industries is the 2017 Wodonga Community Organisation of the Year for its work improving the lives of people with a disability through meaningful employment. Established by a group of parents in 1981, the organisation allows those in our community with disabilities to earn an income, learn new skills and grow, both personally and professionally.
ROAD CLOSED Osburn St, from Hovell St to Queen St, is closed until the end of February (weather permitting) to allow for the construction of a new intersection as part of the Havelock St extension. Detours will be in place and motorists are advised to take Queen or Hovell streets to Reid St. Heavy vehicles are encouraged to take the Bandiana Link where possible.

Wodonga Show 70 years and still going strong Exactly 70 years ago, Wodonga Shire President Cr Charles Pollard formed the first society to run an annual show for families in Wodonga and was chuffed to recruit not only 25 people to a committee but 150 members to the society! Fast forward to 2017 and the committee of hard-working people who run Wodonga Show today can only dream of such numbers, but their goal of attracting locals and visitors to an incredible show each year is still alive.

COUNCIL PLAN CONSULTATION
FEBRUARY, 2017
Residents views sought for annual satisfaction survey Wodonga Council would like to inform residents that from February 1, for up to three weeks, your household may receive a call from an independent market research agency, National Field Services.
The survey has been designed to assess the performance of the council across a range of measures to identify ways to provide improvement or more effective service delivery to residents.
They have been commissioned to conduct the annual community satisfaction survey on behalf of the council and is organised by Local Government Victoria.
We appreciate you taking the time to assist us with your valuable feedback.
Similar surveys will be undertaken across many Victorian councils in the coming months.
Please be assured that your details and individual responses are confidential. This survey is separate to the Council Plan consultation.
COUNCIL WANTS FEEDBACK FOR NEW COUNCIL PLAN “The past four years have been a busy time for our city with lots of new and major projects happening across the city,” Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said.
Wodonga Council has endorsed two months of consultation and engagement activities throughout February and March to inform the next four-year Council Plan.
“We encourage everyone to attend one of the many events happening across the city or otherwise head online to the portal makewodongayours.com.au and have your say.
“But there is still plenty more to do and we want to hear from as many residents as possible about what the Wodonga they want to live in looks like, what makes Wodonga a great place to live and what is our greatest opportunity.
The council has a legislative requirement under the Local Government Act to present its priorities for its term through the Council Plan. The motion, passed at the January council meeting, sets out a range of activities with councillors going out to the neighbourhoods through forums and chat sessions as well as visiting schools and retirement homes.
“A new council term is an exciting time and we look forward to another busy and exciting four years.” A feedback report will be presented to councillors in April ahead of the draft Council Plan 2017-2018 to 2020-2021 being presented at the May council meeting for public exhibition and its adoption at the June council meeting.
“We look forward to hearing a range of ideas and feedback from all of our community – from our preschoolers right through to our city’s leaders.
