Local identity Bill Orr isn’t much for fanfare or fuss, even in the lead up to his 80th birthday last month. But typical of his giving and no-complaining attitude, when his home was inundated with family to celebrate his birthday, he and wife Marie happily surrendered their bed and their home and decamped to the caravan on the front lawn. That same generous and stoic spirit has been evident throughout his life. A highly respected member of the Wodonga police force for much of his life, Bill felt

his career was the best job in the world.

were where Target is now,” Bill said.

He was also a huge driving force for two decades behind another of his passions – cycling – as part of the former Wodonga Cycling Club.

Bill was named Wodonga Citizen of the Year in 1985 and has a park named in his honour on Silva Drive.

Then after retiring in 2002, Bill dedicated much time and energy to the Royal Blind Institute of Victoria, and Neighbourhood Watch (both since subsumed into other organisations). “Wodonga has changed incredibly over the years – when I moved here there was no bridge over House Creek, and the saleyards

He was also presented with a Wodonga Council Eagle Award in recognition of his work improving others’ lives, and a state award for his contribution to Neighbourhood Watch. “We’ve had a terrific life,” Bill said. “Our generation had the best of it – we always had work, and we could afford to buy a house.”

CFA showcases emergency skills The dedication and skills of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) will be on display when the CFA Rural Championships come to Wodonga on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2. The championships simulate drills to practice skills used in many emergency fire response situations, and are a series of events run against the clock using firefighting equipment on replica tanker stands. CFA championships have been held ever since the gold rush in the 1850s. These days, two competitions are held at state level (rural and urban championships) every year. The state championships are the

pinnacle event after a series of district-based competitions throughout the year, and this year they will be held at the La Trobe University soccer ovals. On average, 80 senior and 70 junior teams compete in the championships from 50 brigades around Victoria.

With approximately 1000 competitors and 2000 support people and spectators, it promises to be a great spectacle. The younger CFA volunteers in particular ensure that the CFA maintains its vitality and commitment to adapting to the changing needs in the community.

DRAGON BOATS HEADING OUR WAY

Artwork transforms Willow Park

A community group has used a grant from Wodonga Council to transform a barren walkway in their local park into a place full of colour and where people can connect.

The Friends of Willow Park received a Community Impact Grant in 2016 to create a meeting place where ideas can be exchanged, and to raise awareness of the diversity in the community. Ultimately they hoped to help people connect with and respect

the rich tapestry within our society. The group has created two indigenous artworks that have transformed the barren walkway. Plants and other landscaping completed the project, providing an area to host storytelling events focusing on indigenous arts and culture. Local artist David Dunn painted the first mural that features many of the characters who walk in

It’s almost show time! The sign’s gone up, and the show is almost here! Wodonga Show is on Saturday, March 18 from 9am to 4pm at Wodonga Racecourse Recreation and Showground Reserve. This year you can walk on the wild side with Chris Humphrey and his many rare and endangered animals or bounce about with a funfilled laugh-out-loud game of Bubble Soccer.

You can whirl and twirl at the carnival. You can see animals galore both in the nursery, competing in the ring or fluffing feathers in the poultry shed.

This year marks the 25th ‘Chryslers on the Murray’, one of Australia’s biggest car shows that has grown from humble beginnings with 60 cars in 1991, to an expected 700 or more vehicles plus 55 swap vendors this year. ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES

categories with up to six dragon boats per event, making a total of 120 paddlers on the water at any one time.

The championships are rotated around Australian states on an annual basis and this is the first time the national championships have been held in a regional area.

Firstly, the 200m sprint is a fast and furious dash for the line, which produces some very exciting finishes.

The event will be held over six days from Wednesday, April 19 until Monday, April 24. More than 3000 paddlers from all over Australia will descend on Wodonga to compete in Junior, Masters, Premier and state versus state category events. Each day will see more than 1100 paddlers compete in their respective categories, offering spectators a thrillpacked event which can be easily viewed from the banks of the lake. There will be three race

The show is a must see for all motoring enthusiasts both young and old. It provides a unique opportunity for visitors to see a broad range of Valiants, Plymouths, Dodges, Chryslers and celebrate the 46th anniversary of the legendary Charger.

Secondly, the 500m race is a mix between a sprint and an endurance event that tests the fitness and stamina of all paddlers. Finally, the 2km race will see crews race twice around the lake to the pounding beat of each boat’s drummer – a truly exciting spectacle. Dragon boat racing has cultural origins in ancient China and has evolved into a highly competitive sport right across the globe. Fast, furious and fun, dragon boating is the ultimate team sport. Entry into the Australian Championships for spectators is free.

CALLING OUR CITY’S YOUNG LEADERS Wodonga Council is calling for nominations for the 2017 Youth Leadership Program. Now in its ninth year, the program is for young people aged 18 to 24 and who live, work or study in Wodonga.

And don’t forget the many other activities, exhibits and displays, entertainment, music and showbags. So save the date and join the celebrations.

Chryslers on the Murray The southern hemisphere’s biggest annual Chrysler expo is returning to Wodonga on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19 at Gateway Lakes.

It’s Victoria’s turn to stage the Australian Dragon Boat Championships with Wodonga’s Gateway Lakes hosting the event.

When Graham Taylor moved to Schlink St five years ago, he used to pick up rubbish almost daily at Dr John Schlink Park. These days, he can’t praise Wodonga Council highly enough for how well maintained the park is. “One day I was having lunch and I watched Phil Liston (the outdoor groundsman) at work and he showed absolute due diligence,” Graham said. “He didn’t waste any time – he started with the edges (and that’s the first time I’d seen anyone do

the edges at this park), he picked up any rubbish, he mowed, he sprayed, then he still had a walk around to check all was in good shape.” “I used to work in the building industry where you had 10 different tradesmen doing 10 different jobs, and everyone blamed someone else. “But council’s onestop-shop system for maintaining parks is very efficient and thorough; you’re doing a great job.”

It’s free, and it helps develop future leaders through skills sessions, guest speakers, training, individual development plans for each participant, one-onone mentoring, community projects, and developing networks. The six-month program starts with a compulsory four-day opening retreat in Bright in May, followed by fortnightly meetings on Wednesdays until October. Speakers for this year’s program include a range of high-achievers. Applications close at 5pm on Friday, March 31. MORE INFORMATION bit.ly/WodongaYLP

Sort your waste and save money

Wodonga residents are reminded to register their four-legged family members by Monday, April 10, or risk a $311 fine. All pets, including dogs and cats, must be registered by that date each year, with renewal notices distributed early March. Please also ensure your pet’s microchip is up-todate, so the rangers can return the animal promptly if it escapes. In Wodonga, there are 7136 dogs registered and 1994 cats registered, with the top pet names being Bella, Charlie, Max and Molly. Discounts are available for pets that meet certain criteria, such as those that are desexed or more than 10 years of age. Council will doorknock in May to ensure that all dogs and cats over three months of age are registered. Registration fees provide a service for owners to report lost and found pets, for council officers to respond to calls about wandering animals or noise complaints, to monitor pet shops and boarding kennels, and more. Unsorted load? $47* Households can potentially save money by sorting their trailer or ute before heading to Wodonga Waste Transfer Station. Many items can be recycled for free including cardboard and paper, some plastics, glass, car and truck batteries, paint, TVs, and computer-related products. Other items can be recycled for a fee (concrete, bricks, green waste, timber, soil, electrical waste, gas cylinders, mattresses, whitegoods and more).

The Mayor, councillors and executive have been meeting community members through “The Wodonga We All Want to Live In” consultations including at roundtables, neighbourhood forums and Seats on the Streets.

Sorted load: save $20! Pile 1 (recycled for free): TV, motor oil, toy fire truck, bike, picture frames, stryofoam. Pile 2 (recycled at a cost): green waste, plastic containers, tyres, timber, gas bottles, fire extinguisher, red-lidded bin full of waste.

By sorting your waste into what can be recycled for free and what can’t, you’ll reduce what goes into landfill (helping the environment) while also saving money. Frequent visitors (more than 10 visits per month) can apply for a credit account. The Waste Transfer Station is at 29 Kane Rd, Wodonga. Opening hours are Monday to

Friday from 9am to 5pm; and Saturday, Sunday and public holidays from 10am to 4pm. It is closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Anzac Day and Christmas Day. * Estimate based on twin cab ute.

COUNCIL PLAN CONSULTATION

MARCH, 2017

LOCAL VIEWS SHAPING CITY’S FUTURE Wodonga Council is at the halfway point of the two-month consultation period for the next Council Plan. The Wodonga We All Want To Live In campaign is seeking the community’s ideas and priorities for our city, which will be used to shape the council’s major priorities for the next four years. More than 70 online submissions have been made, in addition to community consultation sessions.

Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie, with Cr John Watson and Cr Libby Hall, during a roundtable conversation last month.

The Mayor and councillors have visited 12 local schools, conducted informal gatherings in cafes and recorded feedback from more than 40 people at roundtables and neighbourhood forums.

So far, we’ve been told residents would like to see a more vibrant city, with greater employment opportunities and a cohesive community culture. Parks, greenery and open spaces are also high on the list, with all views being taken into consideration by councillors. With submissions closing on March 31, there is still plenty of time to have your say. Attend one of the in-person opportunities across the city, such as the community forum at The Cube Wodonga on Sunday, March 26 and Monday, March 27. Details about events and the online survey can be found at makewodongayours.com.au or phone (02) 6022 9300.
