Local legends are being called on to carry the Queen’s Baton in Wodonga as it prepares to host the Queen’s Baton Relay. The eyes of the Commonwealth will be on Wodonga on Thursday, February 15, 2018 as the Baton journeys towards its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Opening Ceremony on April 4, 2018. Across Australia about 3800 batonbearers are needed to share the dream of the ‘friendly Games’ as part of the QBR. As a community nomination program, this offers the people of Wodonga and the surrounding region an opportunity to carry the Baton. Batonbearers are people of all abilities who inspire others to be great. They will represent a community with pride and showcase to the world the region’s community leaders, sporting stars and local heroes.

Setting off in Australia on December 25, 2017, the Baton will travel for 100 days to connect with as many people as possible in every state and territory. The Queen’s Baton carries a message from Her Majesty The Queen through the entire Commonwealth. The Games are declared officially open when the message is read aloud. The baton will travel through every Commonwealth nation and territory on its way to Australia. Until May 15, 2017, anyone can nominate a person who inspires them to be great. Nominations can be made at gc2018.com/qbr GC2018 are looking for people who: • Have achieved something extraordinary or inspired others to achieve something extraordinary; or, • Have made a significant contribution to either sport, education, the arts, culture, charity or within

their community; or, • Have excelled, or aspire to excel athletically or personally; or, • Contribute to a fun, friendly, vibrant and inclusive community; and • Are at least 10 years old as at December 25, 2017; and, • Are an Australian citizen or lawfully entitled to reside in Australia during the Relay period (December 25, 2017 to April 4, 2018). “We’re delighted to be a part of an event that will take Wodonga to the world and I encourage you to nominate a local legend you think deserves to be a batonbearer, whether they’re an aspiring young person or someone who is already accomplished,” Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said. “The Queen’s Baton Relay is a rare opportunity to shine a light on the people and places that help make our community truly great.”

AWARDS APPLAUD WODONGA’S YOUTH The RED Carpet Youth Awards were launched in April, with nominations to celebrate young people who strengthen Wodonga being called by Friday, June 2. When Breanna Armstrong was nominated last year, she wondered at first if they had the right person.

granting freedom of entry to a city is a privilege extended only to military units and only those that have a close relationship with the city.

The Freedom of Entry originates from a custom observed by British regiments marching through London.

The Army Logistic Training Centre was granted Freedom of Entry to the City in 2001, and exercised that right in 2007.

New path the missing link Walkers, shoppers, parents with prams and dog-owners will be delighted that a missing piece of Wodonga’s footpath network is dropping into place, with a new footpath to be built along Chapple St. The footpath will link the older parts of east Wodonga and the White Box Rise precinct including the shops, school and Wodonga Aquatic Venue and Exercise Space (WAVES). Flagged as a principal pedestrian link in the Wodonga Integrated Transport Study, the footpath will be complete in May (weather permitting). It will include a dog-friendly bridge over Jack in the Box Creek, a spot that can at times be very busy and crowded.

Females in sport workshop Local sporting clubs are invited to a workshop to increase the number of women and girls involved in sport. Women and Girls in Sport is a workshop run by Sports Community, an organisation whose goal is to empower sports clubs and build stronger communities. The session will provide clubs with a range of strategies to increase the number of females playing sport including active participation, making facilities safe and femalefriendly, and increasing media coverage. It will be held on Monday, May 8, from 6pm to 8pm at WAVES. If you, your committee, players or any other volunteers would like to attend, please RSVP at clubdevelopmentworkshop. eventbrite.com.au, or for more information phone April Lampe on (02) 6022 9705 or email alampe@wodonga.vic.gov.au ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES

“I try to be a good example for the little kids I coach… I know they all look up to what I do,” said Breanna, who balances Year 12 studies at Wodonga Catholic College with coaching and playing basketball. Erin McIntosh – a 2016 finalist in the Performing Arts category for her outstanding contribution to local music and drama – said the awards are a way to acknowledge all the awesome things people are doing in the community. Since the awards began nine years ago, they have continued to shine the

light on young people aged between 14 and 24 years who work, live, study or volunteer in Wodonga. In 2017 the awards will recognise young people across nine categories including individual community service, sport and recreation volunteer, young carer, apprentice/trainee, endurance/persistence, advocacy and action, performing art and music, visual arts/media, and the penultimate award of youth ambassador. Many local businesses are providing valuable sponsorship. Nominations close on Friday, June 2, 2017. (Cover photo: RED Carpet committee members Jye McBurnie, Storm Cruden and Marnie Donnellan)

Community pulls together during storm clean-up The community was out in force in the days after the severe storm at the end of March, with many instances of neighbours helping neighbours.

the council’s outdoor crews continued to clean up the many damaged trees and limbs on roads, footpaths, parks and reserves across the city.

More than 200 calls were made to the SES after the 20-minute storm cell left a trail of damage through Wodonga and Indigo, including 1700 Wodonga households that were left without power.

Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said council staff used a ‘make safe approach’ where the most dangerous incidents were prioritised and attended to first.

Wodonga Council supported the SES in the first line of response, making sure any residents that were at risk had been evacuated and had somewhere to stay, being on standby to set up relief centres if needed, securing roofs and buildings that were damaged, and attending to fallen powerlines and trees. When a large tree fell across live power lines, council crews made the site safe for both the public and all emergency response personnel. After the initial response,

“Council staff still have a big job ahead of them and will continue to mop up for many months.

This Mother’s Day, why not treat mum to some of Wodonga’s best offerings?

“But it was so reassuring to see how well all agencies worked side-by-side, including the police, council, SES, and the Department of Human Services.

You could win a Pamper Package worth $350 for you or your mum this Mother’s Day.

“What a great team effort and response – well done. I would also like to thank the community for your assistance, your understanding and your patience – everyone really came together,” she said.

YOUR SAY ON HOW WE PLAY

A two-hour parking limit is now in place in the Vermont St area, including from Brockley St to Wilson St.

If you’re not sure which preschool to send your child, why not come along to one of the following preschool open days?

It comes in response to a petition presented to the council earlier this year regarding congestion in the area.

This will give you an opportunity to see the preschool programs, view the facilities and have a chat to staff before making your final decision.

The council moved a motion at its March meeting to apply twohour parking in the area to be enforced by local laws officers and to review it over the next six months.

• Tuesday, June 13: Southern Rise Children’s Centre and Stanley St Preschool • Wednesday, June 14: Jamieson Court Preschool and Southern Rise Children’s Centre • Thursday, June 15: Belgrade Ave Preschool and Felltimber Children’s Centre • Friday, June 16: Baranduda Preschool Parents and children are welcome to visit the centres on these days between 9.30am and 11.30am. CHANGES TO VERMONT ST PARKING

ACACIA CAR PARK AND TOILET BLOCK WORKS Wodonga Council’s Playometer is being cranked up again for a new round of playground consultations. The online tool is an online calculator for designing and building playgrounds, and was first rolled out last year. It allows you to ‘spend’ money from your allocated budget, choosing what you would ideally install from a range of contemporary play equipment. Under the council’s playground strategy, playgrounds that are due for refurbishment undergo a review to ensure that

facilities continue to meet community needs. “Wodonga Council is committed to providing high quality play spaces in our city,” Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said. “Before any major changes are made to these play spaces, we want your feedback on how the playgrounds are used – both now and in the future.” Information sessions have been held in West Wodonga, or you can attend one on Saturday, May 6 at: • Simon Lane Park, Baranduda, from 9am to

10am; or, John Potter Park, Cambourne Park Estate, from 10.30am to 11.30am.

Wodonga Council is seeking feedback on Max Beck Park, Ernest Condon Corridor, Herb Harris, Simon Lane and John Potter parks. A full list of Playometers can be found via our website. Feedback closes at 5pm on Monday, May 15.

Works have begun on the Acacia Car Park, between High and Hume streets. The car park will be resealed and the lighting will be enhanced to increase safety in the area. Asphalting will be undertaken in mid-May. The works will also see the present toilet block demolished. A replacement facility will be sited in a new location in the coming weeks.

IN BRIEF STREETLIGHT ROLLOUT Contractors have begun the LED streetlight replacement program.

COMMUNITY IDEAS MAKE AN IMPACT WITH GRANTS

An owner builder is someone who carries out building work on his or her own land. Owner builders take on many of the responsibilities of a registered builder including:

The changeover of a streetlight involves a single elevated work platform with two to three crew members.

• Obtaining permits;

It takes less than five minutes to replace a streetlight, so any disruptions to traffic flow should be minimal.

• Scheduling, supervising and/or carrying out building work themselves; • Ensuring the work meets all relevant building regulations, standards and other laws; and,

Residents’ cars can remain parked on streets but the council encourages motorists to avoid parking directly under streetlights to assist in the efficient rollout of the program.

• Arranging the appropriate building inspections and the final or occupancy certificate at completion of the works.

DO YOU USE BPAY VIEW? Wodonga Council is able to issue rate notices via BPay View directly to your personal internet banking portal. Register through your internet banking site. As well as empowering people to grow ideas in an innovative and creative way, the grants are intended to strengthen programs and services that meet a local community need, and encourage people to volunteer or participate in their community.

Previous grants that have made a real impact in our community include Wodonga Men’s Shed (an organisation working to prevent social isolation amongst men).

Grants of up to $5,000 are available for initiatives by community groups and notfor-profit organisations in the categories of building stronger communities, environmental sustainability, community events, and arts and culture.

The grants allow the community to drive innovative ways to address social and health issues such as obesity, family violence, mental illness and drug and alcohol-related harm. They

Bright and colourful design for youth card Ysolla Togher’s bright and colourful design has been selected to grace the 2017-2018 Albury-Wodonga Youth Connect Card, which will be distributed among more than 14,000 local youth later this month. The 20-year-old self-taught graphic designer, pictured, was pleasantly surprised to win but is excited about the opportunity. “I wanted to create a design that reflected my personality, was fresh and fun, and that also reflected current trends, such as geometric shapes,” she said She also wanted the design to appeal

to all genders, choosing a colour scheme that includes a range of colours like pink, orange, green and blue. The Youth Connect Card contains discounts to various stores located in Albury and Wodonga, plus a directory of contact numbers for young people if they need help or information. It is designed for those aged nine to 24, with the aim to provide them easy access to youth services for health, accommodation, employment and more. FIND OUT MORE wodonga.vic.gov.au/youthconnectcard

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR GREEN BIN With winter fast approaching, the growth of backyard plants and lawn has begun to slow, leading to less green waste going into our greenlidded organics bin. Wodonga Council Waste Management Co-ordinator Jason Perna said this extra space in green-lidded bins will make way for the range of other items that can be discarded over the cooler months. “Many residents are surprised to learn that the bin can be used for much more than food and garden waste,” he said. “There’s a whole list of other items that people might not immediately identify as organics - from pizza boxes and facial tissues, to newspaper and toilet rolls.” Falling autumn leaves can also be gathered and discarded, along with lint from the clothes dryer as it begins being used more regularly over winter.

“These items are in addition to the common food scraps such as meat, dairy products, fruit and vegetable scraps,” Mr Perna added. Residents are reminded that items such as plastic bags, food packaging, gravel, dirt and ash are not permitted in the organics bin. The contents of the greenlidded bin, which is collected weekly, will eventually become quality compost.

This concession increases annually according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and is shown as a state government concession in the financial area of the rates notice. If you hold a card that

grants you full entitlements and have not received a concession for the property that is your sole place of residence, you need to fill in and return the application form for a rates concession. You must return to us in person at the council’s Hovell St office and bring your card to be sighted. Forms are also available at customer focus. Once completed,

the concession is granted in future years until your circumstances change. Please note: Health Care Card holders are eligible for rebates on certain charges but this does not apply to a rebate on council rates. MORE INFORMATION wodonga.vic.gov.au/rates

Got grandchildren? Get immunised Grandparents and carers of babies less than six months are urged to come to an immunisation session if you haven’t been immunised within the past 10 years. Immunisation is a safe and effective way of protecting our community against harmful disease, including the flu. All relatives and carers of young babies need to have a current Boostrix vaccine (diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough) – free for parents and $40 for grandparents. You may also choose to get the flu vaccine.

The council can also immunise workplaces with 10 or more staff for a fee. Influenza can significantly impact workplace, and costs businesses considerable amounts of money each year due to absenteeism, interruptions to service delivery and reduced productivity. For information and bookings phone the council’s immunisation team on 1800 655 360. IMMUNISATION DATES wod.city/immunisation

PROGRAM FOR EMERGING LEADERS

OPEN GALLERIES BRING MESSAGE OF PEACE Artworks on display in the Open Galleries light boxes on the northern wall of Wodonga Library are by a young local artist who brings a message of peace.

Applications are now open for the 2017 New and Emerging Communities Leadership Program.

Local emerging artist Rebecca Egan was inspired by a video of a father comforting his son after the Paris terror attacks. Her resulting artworks titled ‘Paris, war and flowers’, feature images of a landmine, fist and bomber.

This free community program, funded by the Victorian Government, provides an outstanding opportunity for migrants and refugees to build leadership skills and capacity.

“All the flowers featured in the artworks are symbols of negativity with messages of sorrow, heartlessness, shame, change, grief and death,” said Rebecca, who used red exploding from the landmine because it creates blood, purple with the fist for bruising, and blue with the plane to represent the sky.

Held in Wodonga from May to August, participants will: • Develop leadership skills and confidence; • Grow networks in government, business and community sectors; • Gain insights and leadership experiences from community leaders; • Engage in a group community project; • Work with a mentor; and, • Learn with a diverse group of people committed to making a difference.

Rebecca began her creative journey at a young age, drawing unique little pet shop characters and random manga characters. Then after studying at the Wodonga Flexible Learning Centre, she developed her current style of drawing bugs, flowers and skulls in watercolour and fineliner pen.

She also studied watercolour

painting, lino printing and screen printing. Her art in Open Galleries is the result of her final works submitted for the Year 12 studio arts assessment. Rebecca is the second artist whose work has been displayed in Open Galleries. Wodonga Council commissioned the light boxes in 2016 so local artists had an open gallery to display their artwork in a public space, and rotates the work every three months. This gives artists the opportunity to create a unique artistic statement in a high visibility area.
