LOBBYING and LEADERSHIP A strong focus on Wodonga as a leader in the region has been a central factor in the Mayor’s and Chief Executive Officer’s lobbying and advocacy meetings. Everything from health, trade to jobs, education and rail has been on the agenda for the past month. A cornerstone was the Committee for Economic Development Australia Reinventing the Regions conference which brought together regional leaders to talk jobs, economic development and sustaining competitive advantage.

Have your say on draft hills plans The draft Planning for the Wodonga Hill Strategy and associated masterplans are now out for public exhibition for a four-week period. Following the August council meeting, the draft documents – containing an overall strategy and five masterplans for individual hills precincts – have been put out to the community for final feedback following a 12-month consultation and review process. Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said the documents provided vital direction in managing the environmental values and usage of the hills that ring our city. “We know people are passionate about our hills

and we know they value and enjoy all they have to offer. “This strategy is important in ensuring we can all continue to enjoy them for many years to come through a co-ordinated approach to their management and preservation. “The documents have undergone many changes and revisions since they were first presented to the community 12 months ago. “But I again urge our community, whether you use them to walk your dog, stroll or train, as a member of a sporting or hobby group, or you simply live alongside the hills, to have their say on the future of our hills.” The council has been in

consultation with the community for more than a year around our hills and planning for a Feedback and revision of the drafts has been ongoing throughout the period with meetings with key stakeholders and other land managers, including DEWLP, Parklands Albury and Wodonga and senior members of the CFA. The draft Planning for the Wodonga Hills strategy establishes a vision for each hills site and the supporting masterplan details a suite of strategies or specific actions to deliver the vision for each site. The planning for each site hills has been guided by the management objectives and guiding principles applying to all the hills and well as

analysis of the specific features and context of each individual site. Following the exhibition period which will close on Friday, September 22, feedback will be considered with a final version to be presented to the council for adoption. All the draft documents including an overview document outlining the changes to the document the next steps will be available for viewing at the council’s Hovell St offices, Wodonga Library and community centres or online at the council’s consultation site Make Wodonga Yours. LOGISTICS LEADERS CONVERGE ON CITY Wodonga hosted the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport conference on logistics in regional Victoria last month at The Cube Wodonga. Supported by Wodonga Council, Regional Development Victoria and MOVE - People Driven Banking, the conference featured the latest thinking from road, rail and warehouse operators with speakers from the logistics industry, infrastructure experts, and government. It was also an opportunity to showcase the Logic precinct and the development and opportunities available. It was in 2002 that Wodonga Council moved to secure a parcel of land for the purposes of a logistics hub. It’s strategic location places businesses in reach of more than 75 per cent of Australia’s population by the next day transport shift and allows 24/7 operations. Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie, who opened the conference, said more than 15 years later, the council’s goals have been realised and there has been more than $180 million worth of investment on the site including: • A major distribution centre in Woolworths,

• A rail terminal with SCT, • An education pillar with Wodonga TAFE’s National Industrial Skills Training Centre, the Driver Education Centre of Australia and Motorsports Training Australia, • The Border Express warehousing facility, and; • A 24-hour service station with fatigue management centre and trailer interchange. In addition, XLam are constructing a $25 million cross laminated manufacturing facility to be operational by year end. Transport and warehousing sector is a key driver of Wodonga’s economy in terms of regional exports, employment, value-added and local expenditure on goods and services. It contributes more than $234 million to total output per annum in Wodonga and $108 million to value-added activity with more than 700 jobs contributing to more than $53 million in wages and salaries. The prospect of the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail Project and the expansion of the High Productivity Vehicle Network throughout the state and along the Hume corridor will see significant change for Wodonga and the region.

Young achievers applauded Three high-performing young people received Young Achiever Awards at the August council meeting to help them pursue their sport at a state or national level. Pictured above with Cr Tim Quilty and Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie, Elijah Amery, left, and Elijah Hollands, left, were recognised for their achievements in AFL. Elijah Hollands has achieved a lot already in Australian Rules football, and recently competed in the School Sport Australian Championships in WA in the 15 years and under boys team.

of 25, after performing extremely well against students across Victoria in the selection process that began in April.

Elijah Amery was also picked to make up the State Schools Victoria AFL under 15s boys team, and has also won a grand final premiership and club best and fairest.

Finally, Charlotte Smith, who was wearing her Australian tracksuit for the presentation, above, has made great achievements in synchronised swimming.

Both made the final team

A love for swimming and

Program to empower women

Get to know your neighbours and be part of the nation’s biggest ever weekend of garage sales this October. Wodonga Council is bringing Garage Sale Trail to town on Saturday, October 21, and Sunday, October 22, 2017. Join over 350,000 sellers and shoppers as over 2 million items are set free from cupboards, garages and sheds across the nation! For shoppers, it’s a great way to grab a bargain, find

something unique and shop sustainably. For sellers it’s a free, fun and social way to de-clutter, find a home for your pre-loved stuff, meet local people and make some pocket money. Sellers can sell on one or both days. Garage Sale Trail is the biggest reuse and community event in Australia, and the idea is simple. By organising communities around Australia to hold garage sales on one big day, Garage Sale Trail aims

to provide a platform for fundraising, promote reuse, enable local community connections and inspire fun in communities across the nation. To register or to see what sales are nearby, follow the link below. There are free seller packs available for the first 1,250 sales registered nationally. FOR MORE INFORMATION garagesaletrail.com.au

A complementary mentoring program will also run. Information sessions will be on Thursday, October 5, from 10am to 11.30am (on leadership) and from noon to 1.30pm (mentoring program). Both sessions are in Wodonga Council Chambers, 104 Hovell St. Applications for the leadership program close Monday, October 16. To register for the information sessions or to apply, email bridget.jolley@ wdv.org.au or phone (03) 9286 7813.

Staying safe with backyard fire pits

Who’s responsible for nature strip trees?

Do you love having a fire pit in your backyard for those chilly evenings?

Trees on nature strips across Wodonga are the responsibility of the council, with trees planted during winter and watered regularly over the warmer months.

Many people love the warmth and feel of a fire that provides a place for friends and family to gather. However, with free-standing fire pits such as chimineas becoming popular, there is an increased risk of smoke being produced and fires spreading beyond your back yard. If you use a fire pit in your back yard, please consider your neighbours. Ensure any fire on your property doesn’t impact on others – use only dry firewood, and always make sure the fire is put out properly.

Please note fires are not permitted on the ground, only in free-standing fire pits. To avoid having a complaint made against you, read the EPA’s tips on reducing the impact of fires on your neighbours. FOR MORE INFORMATION wod.city/EPAsmoke

The tree planting program identifies what species should be planted on each street according to strict requirements. These include the width of the nature strip, height restriction due to overhead wires, the colour, shape, and any pruning considerations. Any tree that is damaged, has overgrown or died is also pruned or removed by the council’s qualified arborists

and should not be trimmed by residents. More than 1500 trees are planted every year. If you have a tree on your nature strip that needs pruning or would like to discuss the species to be planted, please phone the Customer Focus team on (02) 6022 9300. CITYLIFE 17

Neighbourhoods welcome new playgrounds Two new playgrounds have recently been opened to provide for families in Riverside Estate and White Box Rise. The Riverside Estate playground on Charlton Rd has a tower and climber, triple balance beam, mule rocker, and five-way swing (provided by playground manufacturer Kompan). It also has picnic tables, bench seating, a water bubbler and a shade structure. Landscaping includes 17 new trees that have been planted in and around the playground, and the fencing complements the estate’s aesthetics. Meanwhile, the new playground at McLean Park in Badcoe Ave (White Box Rise

As part of the council’s annual renewal program, works have also begun in the following playgrounds to replace old equipment: Alma Rogers Park, Bradbury Park (Clover Ave), Dr Bill Grant Park, Jack Maher Park, and Jim Mathews Park. Wodonga Council upgrades and installs new playgrounds as part of the Playground Strategy 2016-2020.
