Bonegilla Migrant Experience had a special visitor recently when Ilona Bardy returned after 67 years to celebrate her 100th birthday. Mrs Bardy arrived at Bonegilla from Budapest in 1949. After a short stay, she and her young son George were moved on to the camp at Uranquinty where they lived while her husband completed two years of contracted work to the Australian Government. Her memories of Bonegilla include the shock of going from a European winter and plenty of snow, to living in a tin hut at the height of an Australian summer. She also remembers cooking at

and had lots of hot sauce. I say, before you die, everyone must try everything.”
“All the families lived very closely together (in the huts), so we could hear what each other was saying,” Mrs Bardy said.
Mrs Bardy has remained in the Wodonga region all her life, as have many of her extended family including three children, nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren (with another on the way).
And she’s clearly made of stern stuff – according to her daughter Martha, Mrs Bardy nearly died from a kidney infection when she was 15. “I lost all contact with my own family in Hungary, so for me the most important thing in my life has been to always have Christmas with my own children,” she said. “I tell everyone – one must live. I never smoked, but I ate well,
To celebrate her birthday, Mrs Bardy joined Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie at Bonegilla for afternoon tea. Stories of other former Bonegilla residents can be found in Picturing and Re-picturing Bonegilla by Bruce Pennay, due out this month and available at Bonegilla Migrant Experience.

BONEGILLA WELCOMES BACK 100-YEAR-OLD RESIDENT
YOUR COUNCIL, YOUR VOTE Residents and ratepayers of Wodonga Council will be asked to vote in the local council election this October. Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately said voters should not forget about having their say in the election. “Councils are an important tier of government in our democracy, and the elections are a chance for people to have their say on issues like local roads and footpaths, parks and recreation facilities, planning and building regulations, and libraries and community centres,” Mr Gately said. “The obligation to vote in your local council elections is just as significant as voting in state and federal elections.
“I strongly encourage everyone eligible to vote at the 2016 council elections to make their voice heard. It’s your council, your vote.” Compulsory voting provisions apply, and you may be fined if you don’t vote. To help voters remember, the Victorial Electoral Commission introduced the free Vic Election Alerts service on their website; a quick and easy way for all Victorians to remember what to do during the 2016 council elections. Signing up takes less than a minute and messages can be received via email, text message or both. KEY DATES Thursday, September 15:
Voters who will not be at their enrolled or mailing address during the voting period can arrange for their ballot material to be sent to another address by making a redirection request in writing Tuesday, October 4 and Thursday, October 6: Ballot packs are mailed to enrolled voters in random order— voters in the same household may receive their ballot packs on different days. Friday, October 21, 6pm: Voting closes (Voters in postal elections must have posted or hand-delivered their completed ballot material by this time for their vote to count.) GATEWAY VILLAGE TO THROW OPEN ITS DOORS Gateway Village is hosting an open day on Saturday, September 24, from 8am to noon.
displaying local art and craft of the highest quality. In the very same art and craft courtyard, Hay Ho Animal Nursery will house child-friendly small animals to cuddle up to, as well as children’s activities.
The village is brilliantly located between the two communities of Albury and Wodonga, and provides a European feel and a place to meet.
Burraja Arts is an Aboriginal artists enterprise and the new home for Aboriginal arts where all profits go back to the artists themselves to encourage the sustainable growth of jobs and business opportunities for Aboriginal artists throughout the region.
The open day will showcase all that is on offer in the village. You can experience beautiful food, broad ranging art, music and so much more whilst strolling through fresh produce grown in your own backyard at the popular farmers’ market. The market has for sale some of the most amazing local produce and gourmet food, with many stall holders to peruse. Get your fresh fruit and vegetables here. When you arrive, make sure you meet Claire at the new Sustainability Activity Centre to collect your passport. As you venture around, collect a particular letter for your passport from the various villagers in the community. Once completed, take your passport to La Maison Café for your free treat – they will
be open for breakfast, lunch and coffee. Musikids inspires and fosters the development of music and movement in a stress-free environment for young children and their families of the region, using Kindermusik group classes for children aged newborn to five years, and the Encore on Keys keyboard program for children just beginning school.
With 220 young children in classes each week, there will be talented Musikids buskers young and old out entertaining the crowd, playing for a tip or two. Music will filter through the whole village on this special Saturday, including a fabulous sound coming from the Jazz Basement - home to the jazz scene. Grooveyard Hammond Combo will happily encourage young musicians
to take the stage. Albury Wodonga Woodcrafters will be demonstrating pyrography (drawing pictures on wood with hot pen), scroll sawing, carving, and woodturning. Right near the Woodcrafters’ Cottage, GIGS Gallery and Artist studios will be
Adjoining the courtyard with La Maison and Musikids is the Creators Artspace, an artistrun print studio and gallery space. They are a not-for-profit community arts organisation that provides a gallery, workshop and studio space for artists, community groups and educational institutions.
Avoid being swooped in spring
Waste plummets
Spring is here which means it’s swooping season.
The three-bin kerbside food and organics waste collection service has brought significant benefits to Wodonga since it was introduced in 2015.
Wodonga Council Team Leader Parks, Richard Lamb, said swooping birds such as magpies can cause serious injury and people should take precautions to avoid getting hurt.
and Planning (DELWP) will again compile the ‘Victorian Magpie Map’ so residents are aware of areas to avoid. “Residents who are swooped by a bird are asked to report the incident so that the DELWP can update the map.” Even though spring has only just begun, the DELWP has warned some birds such as plovers (Masked Lapwings) are already protecting their nesting sites by swooping.
“The Department of Environment, Land, Water
People are encouraged to let them nest and not to

“The best way to deal with a swooping bird is to keep as far away as possible, until the young birds have left the nest,” he said.

harm native birds as they are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. Signs will be installed warning people of swooping birds reported to the council. “If residents find it impossible to avoid these areas, we suggest they take appropriate measures to try and protect themselves, such as wearing a bike helmet or hat,” Mr Lamb said. REPORT SWOOPING delwp.vic.gov.au/swoop
In just one year, the amount of waste going to landfill has reduced by 43 per cent from 7896 tonnes in 2014-2015 to 4431 tonnes in 2015-2016 – equivalent to 475 trucks full of waste. To continue the great efforts of the Wodonga community in reducing its waste, here are some great tips to check if your household is recycling as much as it can: Do the plastic ‘scrunch test’ – soft plastics such as bags and packets belong in the red-lidded bin. Any plastic with rigidity such as a fruit punnet can go into the recycling. The exception is polystyrene and foam which go into the red-lidded bin. Place recycling ‘bins’ in other
areas of your home such as bathrooms, laundries and offices – shampoo and detergent bottles, office paper can all go into the recycling bin. Toilet rolls can go into the green organics bin. If you have a larger household and recycle a lot you can upsize your yellowlidded recycling bin by 50 per cent to 360L by phoning the council on (02) 6022 9300 for $20/year (that’s less than 40 cents per week). Treat your red-lidded bin as ‘the last resort’ for waste. FOR MORE INFORMATION halvewaste.com.au

Why can’t I drop my kids off in the bus zone at school?
If cars are stopped in school bus zones, buses are forced to park partially over the road which then creates a safety hazard for other road users and pedestrians. School bus zones must remain clear for the relevant period primarily for the safety of children, and because it helps keep the traffic flowing. Council officers and police regularly patrol school crossings, so avoid a $93 on-the-spot fine and park a block away or other nearby spot. You’ll get some exercise and can walk the last bit together as a family.
What sh ou ready fo ld I do to be r storms ?
What can be done about pot holes?
ss a Is long gra problem?
Please remember to keep grass short, even on vacant blocks, to avoid attracting vermin as spring approaches.
The extremely wet weather Wodonga has been experiencing means pot holes form quickly on local roads, and the council attends to these as fast as it can. You can report a pot hole by using Citywatch from a mobile phone or phoning customer focus on (02) 6022 9300.
Storms can happen anywhere and at any time of the year. Be prepared by clearing gutters, downpipes and drains of debris; tidy your yard of loose objects; secure items such as outdoor settings and trampolines; trim branches that overhang homes or buildings; and park your car undercover and away from powerlines and trees.
Have your say at makewodongayours.com.au DRAFT SAFETY, INCLUSION AND EQUITY STRATEGY
IS YOUR HOME NOW IN A BUSHFIRE ZONE?
To make Wodonga a safer, more inclusive and equitable community, this strategy identifies four priorities: violence against women and children, harm from alcohol and other drugs, homelessness, and barriers for people with a disability. Have your say by Tuesday, September 13, online or by phoning (02) 6022 9300; emailing info@wodonga.vic.gov.au; or writing to Community Planning and Well-being, Wodonga Council, PO Box 923, Wodonga, Victoria 3689.
Some Wodonga properties may now be impacted by updated Victorian Government bushfire mapping. Check the updated maps online and, if necessary, make a submission to have the mapping reviewed by Monday, September 26, 2016 to info@wodonga.vic.gov.au

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a national scheme that will provide targeted support and improved coordination and access to services for people with disabilities. Under the NDIS, people with a disability and their families and carers will have control over what, when and where they spend their funds.
Wodonga Council is a proud supporter of Come in We’re Accessible, a Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission initiative. The council is partnering with the National Disability Co-ordination Officer program to highlight the issue of accessibility among Wodonga businesses.
The NDIS is being progressively rolled out in Australia and will be rolled out in Wodonga in October 2017. The NDIS will be provided to Australians under the age of 65 with a significant disability. To find out more on eligibility, use the access checker at myplace.ndis. gov.au/ndisstorefront/ndisaccess-checklist.html The NDIS has developed a range of resources to help you prepare for the change, including resources for people with a disability, for parents and carers, for service providers; and to help you find providers in Wodonga (link below). PLANNING FOR A STRONG CITY OF THE FUTURE The current council has overseen some strong achievements in planning in the past four years, especially in reinvigorating the city centre. This has included the Wodonga CBA Revitalisation Plan, Wodonga CBA Design Guidelines, Wodonga Integrated Transport Study and completion of the CBA Land Use Framework.
Planning for a prosperous region has been delivered through significant planning permits including Manns Central, Woolworths, SCT, Xlam, ALDI, Daintree Medical Centre, works to Junction Place, Baker Motors, Logic Service Centre, new KFC,
Some Wodonga properties may now be impacted by updated Victorian Government bushfire mapping. Bushfire Management Overlays (BMOs) identify areas of Victoria that are at risk of extreme bushfire and are designed to make the community more resilient to bushfires. The Victorian Government updated the Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) mapping and state Planning Policy, meaning some properties previously not required to have planning and building permits for development are now required to because of the bushfire risk.
In planning for long-term growth, the council approved the Leneva Baranduda Growth Area Framework Plan 2012, progressed the Leneva Baranduda precinct structure, completed the Leneva Baranduda whole of water catchment management plan, and adopted the Wodonga Growth strategy. It has also progressed Wodonga affordable housing forums, and continued to develop housing estates such as Riverside Estate, White Box Rise, Whenby Grange, Enterprise Park, Glenwood and new estates such as Huon Park and Baranduda Grove.
IS YOUR HOME NOW IN A BUSHFIRE ZONE?
Changes may impact on properties that are not necessarily on the edge of bushland.
Hungry Jacks and Pop-ups, new CFA operational station, North East Water’s office complex, APCO Service Station. The council has also issued approximately 850 planning permits and 3,000 building permits over its four-year term. Enhancing the lifestyle for Wodonga residents has
been the focus of the recent Wodonga Hillsides Activation Strategy as well as the Public Domain Master Plan (in progress). Overall, planning has been made easier with amendments to Planning Panels such as C123 and C124; and response times have shortened dramatically.
In assessing the risk, the Victorian Government and fire authorities followed recommendations of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, plus the latest evidence on how bushfires may impact communities. The criteria used to determine risk includes: •
Areas of vegetation (except grasslands) four hectares or more in size, with a 150 metre buffer area applied. The buffer
is applied to protect dwellings against embers which are the cause of most house losses from bushfire. •
Areas where the surrounding landscape presents a significant bushfire hazard..
The detailed criteria for mapping bushfire hazard are set out in Planning Advisory Note 46: Bushfire Management Overlay Mapping Methodology and Criteria. And can be obtained from the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning: dtpli.vic. gov.au/planning/panelsand-committees/currentpanels-and-committees/ bushfire-managementoverlay-standing-advisorycommittee To find out if your property has been identified as at risk of extreme bushfire (hence require planning and building permits if you develop the property), check the maps on the council website (hardcopies are also available at the council office, 104 Hovell St, Wodonga). If you believe the mapping may be incorrect, you can make a submission for the Victorian Government to review the mapping by Monday, September 26, 2016 to info@wodonga.vic.gov.au
YOUR RATES EXPLAINED TAKE TO THE FOOTPATH IN OCTOBER Many Wodonga residents will have received their rates notice for 2016-2017. Rates are important in covering the cost of maintaining community infrastructure and services provided by Wodonga Council. How much each ratepayer pays depends on the value of their property. Valuations are done by an independent valuer every two years, with 2016 being a valuation year. Valuations do not increase or decrease revenue for the council. They ensure the distribution of rate revenue remains fair and equitable and according to property values.
Wodonga Council is raising its rates revenue by 2.5 per cent in line with the Victorian Government rate cap. This refers to the total amount of rates revenue received by the council. Most property owners will find their rates bill will be more or less than a 2.5 per cent increase, dependent on the capital improved value of their property. Anyone who has not received their rates notices should receive it soon. Pay your rates online by Friday, September 30, or in person by 5pm Thursday, September 29 (the council offices are closed Friday, September 30, due to the AFL grand final public holiday).
Walk to School month is coming up in October and encourages primary-school students to walk, ride or scoot to and from school as often as possible. Participating in Walk to School is a great way to promote healthy behaviour in kids, plus it’ free and fun. Walk to School can help children achieve the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day, and adopt physical activity habits for life. In the long term, this can help reduce traffic congestion, parking difficulties and the associated environmental impacts.
TO GET STARTED • Walk with your child to and from school • Arrange your child to walk with another family, allowing them to socialise and share their journey • If you live a long way from school or have limited time – drive part way to school and walk the rest • Mix it up – walk, ride or scooter with your kids to school. The Wodonga Council is working with local schools to encourage students to participate. Regardless of how many times student walk, the children can enter fun
walking theme competitions each week, and win some fantastic prizes. If you have a child or school who wants to get involved, please phone the Recreation Officer on (02) 6022 9705 or email recreation@wodonga. vic.gov.au MORE INFORMATION walktoschool.vic.gov.au

Wodonga pool owners are urged to undertake regular maintenance on their pool barriers following a sharp increase in drowning of children under the age of five. The National Drowning Report 2015 from the Royal Life Saving Society Australia reveals an alarming 30 per cent increase in drowning in children aged zero to four years.
Kim Hargraves knew she had a passion for events, so while completing her Diploma of Events at Wodonga TAFE in 2015, she put her hand up for as much volunteering as she could – including Step Up for Down Syndrome, the Applause Festival, and the Wodonga Children’s Fair. “I wanted to learn skills that I could add to my resume,” Kim said. “I also wanted to give back to the community, build up my networks, and get some experience.
“Wodonga Council puts the children’s fair on for the community for free every year and it’s a great vibe – it’s exciting, fun and last year the weather was just beautiful.” As a volunteer, Kim helped the official photographer and was also on the gate, handing out wristbands to children with their parents’ contact details in case any child became lost. “I have two kids and want to teach them that you don’t just take, you give as well.
“You only get one go at life, and you certainly get a whole lot more out of volunteering than you’d ever imagine.” The 2016 children’s fair is on Sunday, October 23, from 10am to 3pm at Wodonga Racecourse and Showground Precinct. The theme is “Our World” - exploring cultures from around the world. To volunteer please phone (02) 6022 9289. FOR MORE INFORMATION bit.ly/WodChildFair

Matt Burke, of McLean Crescent, said a barbecue held by Wodonga Council in his neighbourhood last December gave people an opportunity to connect and build friendships. It has meant neighbours have been able to help each other out, whether that’s been through loaning things such as a trailer, sharing information like handyman tips or simply providing the opportunity to have a chat.

“Since the barbecue, I’ve been catching up with the neighbour across the road every week for a cuppa or for dinner between our two families,” Mr Burke said.

There were 26 deaths in this age group, compared to 20 in the previous year. More than half happened in swimming pools. Key strategies to reduce the number of child drowning incidents includes active adult supervision and restricting access to water through properly installed and correctly maintained pool fences. The top five issues resulting in the non-compliance of pool safety barriers released by the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors include: • Gates and doors that are no longer self-closing; • Gates and doors that are no longer self-latching; • Gates that are propped open; • Ground movement; and, • Climbable objects on the neighbour’s side of a boundary fence.
