correspondent note Welcome to the Canada East/ West Regionals! The race for tickets to Carson is shaping up to be a nail-biter in all divisions. In the East, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet will rematch Michele Letendre for the title, and the up-and-coming men from Quebec will challenge the dominating AlbertDominic Larouche. In the West, Tyson Takasaki will try to make 2013 his come-back year, and Angie Pye will step down from individual competition, leaving the floor open for new faces. With several top 20 competitors in both regions pooling their resources on teams, the competition is sure to be just as exciting. If this is your first time reading WODPRESS, we are a sister publication of SWEAT RX Magazine and devoted to representing the community of Canadian CrossFitters. This issue, we’re dishing up the scoop on athletes from both regions. Some may be topping your list of faves, or perhaps they’re on your radar as a fellow competitor or mentor. We sent out questions to the top teams in each region and top individual competitors after the Open, and collected miscellaneous fun facts that you would never know...until now! Find out your favourite athlete’s best benchmark WOD and who they would love to throwdown against in a Live Open WOD Announcement. See who tackled an armed
bandit at the age of 14, who thinks they could throwdown in the kitchen with Chef Gordon Ramsay, who eats truckloads of Swiss Chalet before every comp and who swears like a trucker! You’ll be surprised by some of the many talents of these athletes and what they do when they aren’t CrossFitting. You’ll get some bonus sound bites from our cover models, defending ladies champ in the East, Michele Letendre, and the bearded man from the West, Lucas Parker. Finally, don’t miss our features on Marie-Lyssa Dormeus, the woman behind some of our favourite CrossFit images, and Chris “Stouty” Stoutenburg, inspiring adaptive athlete. As always, we’d love to hear from you. If you have a story to feature in WODPRESS, leave a message on our Facebook page, email me at wodpress@ sweatrxmag.com, or if you see me wandering around at the Regional with a notepad or a laptop in tow, come say hi! To the athletes, GOOD LUCK! To the rest, enjoy the show! I know I will!

his regional marks the third year that we will be watching Michele Letendre and Camille LeblancBazinet vie for one of the two coveted spots to the CrossFit Games. The two have been Canada East’s representatives for two years running, and have each taken a turn at the title of fittest woman in the region. At the 2012 Regional, the women started the weekend two seconds apart after the first workout (“Diane”), and when the dust settled Michele had come out on top by only two points, with the nearest competitor almost 30 points behind. This year promises to be equally as nail-biting, although Michele isn’t focused on who is first or second, and she certainly isn’t ruling anybody else out. “To be 100% honest, I don’t think about Regionals as a rematch with Camille,” she explains. “We have a common goal to make it to the Games and having her there definitely makes it a very interesting competition.” Interesting indeed! Michele and Camille were two of only five women in the world to break into the 9th minute of “Indefinite Fran” (Open WOD 13.5) and I, for one, am hoping some pull-ups come out of the hopper to give us a chance to watch these two women bust out the butterfly head to head. Athlete: Michèle Letendre Age: 27 Affiliate: Abattoir CrossFit Plateau, Montreal QC Best Benchmark WOD: Amanda, 4:28 Before CrossFit: I played tons of sports but I started competing as a swimmer at the age of 9. Then after 3 years I moved on to Water Polo for 6 years, playing nationally and internationally. Who would you “face-off” against for a live Open WOD announcement? What would your ideal WOD look like?: I would definitely choose Annie Thorisdottir. I love her attitude and her competitive spirit and I also would love to see how I measure up to the best in the sport. My dream WOD would be anything with pull-ups, muscle-ups and heavy overhead squats. What is the absolute most horrible workout you can think of?: The worst workout I can think about is the Beach workout of the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games. I’m a great swimmer so that wasn’t the issue; there was just so much running in freaking sand!! I wasn’t ready for that then but now, I’d love to do it again just to see how I’ve improved on my running! Day job: I am the manager of Abattoir CrossFit Plateau and I coach there as well. I also Coach at Deka CrossFit in Blainville, Quebec… Basically I do CrossFit for a living What is the “cheat food” that you are most looking forward to when the season is done?: I LOVE butter croissants and there are SO many bakeries around my gym and I’m really looking forward to trying them all out. Tell us something about yourself that people might not expect: I love to draw and paint. I have a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Object Design. I sort of put that part of me aside for the moment but I am a huge art and design fan. Hopefully when I’m not so tired from training after a long day, I’ll pick up my pencil again and start drawing!

Marie-Lyssa Dormeus on new beginnings and following your path By Jen Young photography by marie-lyssa dormeus

hen people decide to join a gym, most enter with vague and lofty goals of “losing a few pounds”, “getting healthy”, or “looking good for bathing suit season”. When Marie-Lyssa Dormeus entered the Mansfield Club in January of 2011, she had a very specific purpose; she needed to be able to haul her 20 lb camera set-up around, while filming all day, without getting tired. When her mother passed away of cancer seven years ago, Marie-Lyssa took up photography as a form of therapy. She discovered a love for the art that was so different from her daily corporate life and eventually, in 2010, decided to try her hand at cinematography. She didn’t want to just be in the sidelines, she wanted to be in charge: holding the camera, setting up lighting, carrying rigs. But camera gear is heavy, and film scenes can be long; Marie-Lyssa quickly discovered that she was not physically prepared for such demands. “That was in September,” she says, “and for the rest of the year, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.” When it came time for Marie-Lyssa to reflect on her year and write new goals for the next, her brief foray with cinematography was forefront on her mind. Having recently read “The Compound Effect” by Darren Hardy, she was inspired to take a holistic approach to her goal setting, considering her personal, career, and other goals as parts of one whole. “One of the questions I asked myself was: with the choices and habits of my current day to day, what would be the compound effect of these in 3- 5- 10 years from now in personal relationships, career, finances, spirituality, and health and fitness.” It was obvious to Marie-Lyssa where she had been lacking. “I tried to convince myself that it would be ok; we can’t be perfect after all but […] without health you have nothing and yet I was not investing in my health.” So, she walked into the Mansfield Club athletic centre with a simple and specific goal: “I wanted to get back to a point where I could actually be functional. I wanted to not feel intimidated in the male-dominated industry (of cinematography).” She told her story to Roberto the trainer, and he suggested she try this new thing called CrossFit. A CrossFit class was about to start, so MarieLyssa put on her running shoes and tried it on the spot. She made it through one of the suggested three rounds of warm-up (already more than she was accustomed to doing in a session), and learned how to do a push press with a PVC pipe. Then, the WOD: a 50-40-30-20-10 chipper that would look daunting even to a seasoned CrossFitter. Twenty minutes in, the others had all finished, and Marie-Lyssa was still on the first movement. “Part of me was discouraged, but I was mesmerized,” she says. She announced that she would be back the next day. “I don’t think they believed I would show up!” But she did, and this time she did a little better. “I almost made it
6
5.boxtalkmarie_WP2.indd 6
may/june 2013
through the whole warm-up this time!” she laughs. Later that month, Marie-Lyssa moved to Toronto armed with a list of CrossFit facilities to try out. With a friend in tow, she went for her first workout at Tidal CrossFit and “never looked back.” Marie-Lyssa credits Tidal owner Jeff Larsh with helping her overcome not only her physical barriers, but mental and emotional ones, as well. “I was afraid of the barbell,” she says. “I had women telling me things like ‘you’re crazy, you’re going to hurt yourself’ and ‘you’re not an athlete, why don’t you try something more realistic.’ And sometimes I would start to believe them. But Jeff always went the extra mile. He believed in me in
ways that I never believed in myself, and he did so by challenging me, by giving me goals, breaking down my fears, and even pushing my buttons so that I would get angry and remove negative things from my head.” “When people told me, ‘you’re not an athlete’, that traumatized me,” she continues. “Jeff offered constant positive reinforcement. But this community is so powerful that now, those things don’t influence me anymore.” Marie-Lyssa experienced the power of that community when she attended a local competition to cheer on some gym-mates. “At the competition I saw all of these regular people doing crazy things. They weren’t full time-athletes, none of them were going to the Games, but they were putting it all out there anyway. I thought, this is a choice, and it became a matter of, ‘what choice am I making? Is this something that I’m going to do for myself?’” That competition reaffirmed Marie-Lyssa’s commitment to her own health and fitness. It also opened up a new, unexpected path in her professional life. Marie-Lyssa had brought her
camera to the event: “I took some shots of the girls from our gym,” she says, “then I took some shots of other people. I didn’t know them, but they looked good lifting. I had no notion of what or who was ‘important’.” When she posted her photos on Facebook, she was flooded with requests for more. “When I woke up the next morning I had 30 new friend requests from people I hadn’t even met!” she recalls. Now, one year later, if you’re a CrossFitter in Ontario or Quebec there’s a good chance that you’ve seen Marie-Lyssa snapping away at a local competition, or even been her muse. And if so, you know that she can haul her camera equipment around effortlesslly now. In the last year, Marie-Lyssa’s fitness photography has exploded. Many of her CrossFit photos have been featured in SWEAT RX Magazine and WODPRESS, she has shot ads for Reebok, and she has found she has a talent for athlete portraiture. Marie-Lyssa’s success was recently recognized with an award: Lys de la photographie 2013, presented by Media Mosaique& Radio Canada (CBC). The notes from the voting jury cited her recent spread in SWEAT RX on “The Ladies of CrossFit” – they found its ruggedness and lack of touch-ups refreshing -- as contributing to their decision. Marie-Lyssa was surprised to hear about her nomination, and even more so when she won. “It makes me feel amazing because I started this journey of fitness for myself, so I could hold a camera while people read their lines. I didn’t do it to get awards.” Marie-Lyssa can’t imagine her life without that meeting at the athletic centre two years ago, she barely recognizes herself, now. “There’s a certain level of confidence that comes with accomplishments. Not just from getting fitter, but from doing things, because you’ve conquered a fear. You find a better sense of self, and you find a place where you love yourself. In an age where a lot of my friends are feeling depressed as they approach 40, I’m mesmerized by the woman that I see emerging.” Marie-Lyssa is a true example of the functionality of CrossFit, not just for physical fitness, but also for personal and professional growth. “I am not working exclusively in CrossFit,” she says, “but I’m doing CrossFit because I love it,and those skills are setting me up for everything else. I’m building a foundation that is taking me in so many directions. I’m even shooting ballet now, having never considered it before.” Marie-Lyssa feels confident that she has experienced a sort of special alignment of the Universe since picking up her first camera; photography led her to fitness and, in turn, fitness has contributed to her photography and, more importantly, to her life.

canada east teams Team L’usine CrossFit (Montreal, QC) Patrizio Delli Fraine Dany Roy Dominic Adam Mélaine Petit Marie-Émilie Perreault Émilie Pfeiffer-Badoux L’Usine CrossFit has become a staple atop the leaderboard in Canada East; the team has travelled to the games twice and hopes this year will be no exception. Four members are returning for their third run: Pat, Melaine, Emilie, and Dominic. After finishing 33rd at the 2012 CrossFit Games, what stood out the most to team L’Usine was that they needed to be able to move more weight. When asked where their strengths lie, the team says they have no superstars. “We don’t have any one who comes from the circus for gymnastics, or a guy from a remote village in Siberia that can out snatch Pyyros Dimas!” says team captain, Dominic Adam. What they lack in specialities, they hope to make up for with a good team dynamic. “We actually don’t mind each other! I wouldn’t go so far as to say we like each other,” Dominic jokes, “but, we have a bit of everything: the funny guy, the old (that sums it up, just plain old), the geek (has the stats on the Open, the Regionals, anyone, any team, any year!), the “fat cutter” (Doc doesn’t do him justice), the trash talker (way overboard on the profanity), and the handicap (but don’t say anything...she won’t hear anyway).” Team L’Usine has not specialized their programming for this year’s Regional. Other than “making sure engines are running high,” Dominic feels peaking is overrated. “The team members either come to train or they stay home, no matter the time of year. Every day is a PR day!”

Both Russ and Graham competed at the high school and collegiate levels for Football, Soccer, Track and Field, and Basketball. Justin also trains MMA, and Bill participates heavily in recreational sports. The team’s CrossFit resume is no less impressive. In 2011, the team won Elements Team Challenge, and Russ climbed the podium at local individual events. Beckie finished third at the 2012 Canada East Regional, while Kristine earned the title at CompWOD’s Best of the Best invitational competition. The team credits Coach Graham O’Hagan for their success this year; while he may be new to competing at CrossFit, his unique and challenging programming has put everyone at the top of their game. The Canada East Regional will be the team’s first challenge against the best in the region. Team WAF is hoping their CrossFit past, tight friendship, and tough programming will earn them a spot at the 2013 CrossFit Games in July.

Équipe CrossFit Laval (Laval, QC) Camille St Pierre Carl Beaudet Alexis Dufour Micheline Chamandy Pascale Leblanc Julie Nadeau Ariane St Louis Donavan Ayotte You might know the team from CrossFit Laval as the ones whose supporters all sported moustaches at the 2012 Regional. This year’s team was determined entirely on results from the 2013 Open; the team had 168 members to chose from (one of the largest Open rosters in the region). All those who qualified to do so will be competing as individuals, leaving only 2 of last year’s team members competing for the team this year. The newness of the team may hurt them (it is the first time they will be competing together), but coach and individual competitor Matthieu Dubreucq says all are great individual athletes, and their strong team spirit will pull them together for the competition. The team from Laval placed 10th at the 2012 Regional, and hope to make the cut for the final event in 2013.

CrossFit NCR (Ottawa, ON) Reza Mashkoori Pierre Paul Seguin Angus Mcdougall Andy Stewart Jamie Collins Mylene Arsenault Maude St-Hilaire Angie Seguin CrossFit NCR is perhaps Ottawa’s newest box, but the team’s members are no strangers to CrossFit Competition. Three of them (Reza, Jamie, and Mylene) made up half of Canada East’s top team in 2012, and bring Games experience to their new team. New additions Maude, Pierre Paul (5th at the 2011 Canada East Regional), and Angus have been training with the team for the past year, and are ready to help the new team return to the Games despite losing one of their top scorers, Paul Tremblay, to the individual competition. The team is well rounded, with no specialists, which they think could end up being either a strength, or a weakness. “We don’t have anyone that is significantly stronger than anyone else in any department. We are all very well rounded. We are hoping to use that as a strength this year but who knows, it may play out as a weakness. We like to think we are weakness free!” The team hopes their interpersonal relationship will help them get to the Games. “Our team works very well together, both in competition and outside of the box. We all get along and have great camaraderie.”
