Welcome! On the Brahms Trail, you can get to know the history of Pörtschach, the former litter fishing village in which the composer Johannes Brahms liked to spend the summer months and which is now a centre of tourism by Lake Wörth and the venue of the annual international Brahms competition.

Villi Cinema

Film, design, culture and socialising are at home in the cinema at Monte Carlo-Platz. The foundation stone was laid here for the development of Pรถrtschach and Lake Wรถrthersee as a place for film; film producer Karl Spiehs and the actor Otto Retzer made a decisive contribution to this.

Schloss Leonstain

This history-steeped castle, built in 1492, changed over the centuries from the noble residence of monks and estate-owners to a 4-star hotel and now entices guests into its multiple-award-winning restaurant with fine regional products. The opulent and idyllic atmosphere is reminiscent of the productive period of composer Johannes Brahms.

The composer, born in 1833, preferred to spend his summers in Pรถrtschach am Wรถrthersee. Here, inspired by the wonderful surroundings, he created important works such as the Rain Song Sonata and the Violin Concert in D Major. A bust dedicated to Johannes Brahms can be seen in Schloss Leonstein.

Ruin Leonstein

In the 12th century, Burg Leonstein was built in what is today a nature preserve. Many structural extensions, changers of owner and a fire have contributed to the eventful past of this legend-shrouded and now severely damaged ruin.

In the Villa Venezia, constructed in 1891 by the architect Josef Victor Fuchs, one can feel the charm of the Lake Wรถrthersee architecture with the flair of the Italian Renaissance. Striking miniature arcades and miniature pilasters, and false gables characterise the beautiful faรงade.

Lake Wörthersee Architecture

Various well-known architects constructed villas at Lake Wörthersee, some of which were simple and some of which were imposing and grand. These include, for example, the Villa Wörth and Werzer’s Badeanstalt by Josef Victor Fuchs, the Villa Seehort and the Villa Miralago by Carl Langhammer and the Villa Seefried by Dr. Carl Ritter von Tarnóczy-Sprinzenberg.

This Viennese businessman shaped the landscape of tourism at Lake Wรถrthersee by building the biggest hotel complex in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, numerous villas and generously proportioned parks and promenades. This successful trailblazer had a decisive influence on tourism, and parts of his projects can still be seen today.

The Parkhotel

The Parkhotel of the List family is located on the peninsula of Pรถrtschach. Created from the Badeetablissement Wahliร already built in the 19th century, it has been impressing guests since 1963 with its ship shape and its dimensions. Thanks to its location it offers an excellent view of the panorama of the lake from every room.

Thomas Koschat

The “Carinthian Prince of Song“, Honorary Choirmaster of Carinthia and Citizen of Honour of Klagenfurt was a well-known singer, composer and author. He founded several choirs and particularly cultivated the waltz, male choral music and Carinthian song.
