Valentine`s Day

Valentine`s Day History of Valentine`s Day As early as the fourth century B.C., the Romans engaged in an annual young man's rite to passage to the God Lupercus. The names of the teenage women were placed in a box and drawn at random by adolescent men; thus, a man was assigned a woman companion for the duration of the year, after which another lottery was staged. After eight hundred years of this cruel practice, the early church fathers sought to end this practice... They found an answer in Valentine, a bishop who had been martyred some two hundred years earlier. According to church tradition St. Valentine was a priest near Rome in about the year 270 A.D. At that time the Roman Emperor Claudius-II who had issued an edict forbidding marriage. Valentine, a bishop , seeing the trauma of young lovers, met them in a

secret place, and joined them in the sacrament of matrimony. Claudius learned of this "friend of lovers," and had him arrested. The emperor, impressed with the young priest's dignity and conviction, attempted to convert him to the roman gods, to save him from certain execution. Valentine refused to recognize Roman Gods and even attempted to convert the emperor, knowing the consequences fully. On February 24, 270, Valentine was executed.

Valentine thus become a Patron Saint, and spiritual overseer of an annual festival. The festival involved young Romans offering women they admired, and wished to court, handwritten greetings of affection on February 14. The greeting cards acquired St.Valentine's name.

While Valentine was in prison awaiting his fate, he came in contact with his jailor, Asterius. The jailor had a blind daughter. Asterius requested him to heal his daughter. Through his faith he miraculously restored the sight of Asterius' daughter. Just before his execution, he asked for a pen and paper from his

Literature-something interesting to read.

William Shakespeare

`Romeo and Juliet`.

The story originates from a 1476 story of Mariotto and Gianozza by MasuccioSalernitano, in Il Novelino. Luigi da Porto's Istoria

novellamente ritrovata di due Nobili Amanti gave the story

much of its modern form, renaming the lovers to Romeus and Giulietta and shifting the action

from Siena to Verona. Da Porto's story was taken up and included by Matteo Bandello in his Novelle of 1554, and versified by Arthur Brooke, whose narrative poem "Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet", written in 1562, was the source for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare enriched its texture through his vivid characterizations of both major and minor characters, in particular the Nurse and Mercutio.

Valentine `s Day Traditions: Hundreds of years ago in England, many children dressed up as adults on Valentine's Day. They went singing from home to home. One verse they sang was: Good morning to you, valentine; Curl your locks Valentine`s Day

recipes:

as I do mine---Two before and three behind. Good morning to you, valentine. In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!" In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your

sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling. Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry, As you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off. In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him. If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will also know how many children you will have. Str. 3

Valentine`s Day Is it really love? or is it just a passing feeling am I not convinced? a bit uncertain of the feeling Is it the way you make me feel? so warm with joy and laughter or could it be the happiness from moments spent together The lasting bliss, the kiss I miss, The sweetest thoughts without a touch

poems:

The heart that hurts and bears a scar thinking how far away you are Thinking about you alone or in class Writing your name on my bathroom window glass Wishing you were here To love hold and care Wishing I had you with me To cherish and to stare

Into your soft and beautiful eyes As we both travel to the skies

And mingle with the stars above But is it really love?
