Butler Machinery provides sales, rental, parts and service for many different industries and represents many manufacturers including Caterpillar, Challenger, Lexion, RoGator and TerraGator. Butler Machinery started in 1955 when Francis J. Butler, a former Grand Forks, N.D., contractor, was selected to be a Caterpillar dealer. As a contractor, Francis knew the necessity for the dealership to provide the best in equipment and product support. Francis’s vision required capable, well-trained management and associates, together with the most advanced tools, technology and facilities available. Three generations of the Butler family have maintained this vision. Matt Butler served as CEO from 1969 to 1998. Dan Butler has served as president since 1998. Francis began with modest stores in Grand Forks and Fargo, providing service in eastern North Dakota and Clay County, Minn. A facility on Main Street in Fargo was built in 1957 and replaced with the current building on Interstate 29 in 1986. In 1964, Butler expanded into western North Dakota with the purchase of Shultz Machinery Co. and its stores in Minot and Bismarck. In December 1988, Butler acquired the assets of Kearns Machinery Co. in Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Aberdeen, S.D. The company now serves customers throughout North and South Dakota. In March of 1999, a new store opened in Jamestown, N.D. BMC has committed to providing the best possible sales and service not only in heavy equipment, but also in agricultural equipment. BMC opened a new training facility and corporate headquarters in Fargo in January 2000. In May 2005, a new store was opened in Pierre, S.D., emphasizing ag equipment and product support for ag customers. Butler Machinery added another lo-

Butler Machinery added another location, in Hoople, N.D., in 2010. Formerly Hurtt Equipment Inc., the Hoople location is primarily focused on ag
equipment. In 2012, Butler constructed its 13th location in Huron, S.D. There are now 13 Butler Machinery locations, with a 14th planned to open in the spring of 2013 in Devils Lake, N.D., to further assist our customers.

NDSU demonstrations featured at Big Iron !
NDSU Agriculture Communication
The 2012 Big Iron Farm Show set for Sept. 11 through 13 in West Fargo, will include presentations and demonstrations by North Dakota State University researchers and scientists on tillage, soil health, agricultural robotics and a quarter-scale student tractor. The daily field demonstrations are scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. south of the Big Iron exhibit area. The demonstrations will begin with brief educational presentations. One part of the daily field demonstrations will focus on NDSU’s newly formed soil health initiative. Six NDSU researchers and scientists who conduct soil health research and Extension Service efforts will use a soil pit as an aid to discuss the importance of soils to North Dakota’s vitality. They will discuss crop and range management strategies land managers can use in adapting to changes in climate, cropping systems and environmental situations. Those involved in the soil health initiative include Ann-Marie Fortuna, research soil health assistant professor; Abbey Wick, extension soil health assistant professor; Chris Augustin, area extension soil health specialist; Naeem Kalwar, area extension soil health specialist; Jasper Teboh, soil scientist; and Ben Geaumont, wildlife and range science research assistant professor.

Terry Anderson, of Automation Research Group, will demonstrate the group’s autonomous tractor. It is a 300horsepower diesel and electric machine that functions in field situations without an operator. The tractor has no

Tillage
In another part of the daily presentations, Jodi Dejong-Hughes, University of Minnesota regional extension educator, will discuss shallow-tillage options for various crop management systems. Dejong-Hughes will describe situations when shallow tillage is beneficial and other situations when it might be harmful to crop production. NDSU and University of Minnesota Extension Service personnel are collaborating with tillage equipment companies to feature five types of shallow-tillage machines to help explain recommended tillage practices. Each tillage equipment company exhibiting at Big Iron has been invited to demonstrate a shallow-tillage machine immediately after the educational presentation.
Robotics
The third part of the session will be presentations and demonstrations on
facilities for an operator and is programmed to operate autonomously in fields using radio and laser signals. Anderson will demonstrate how the tractor is programmed to know its position and operate within field boundaries. He also will demonstrate the “follow me” mode of the tractor. In this case, a tractor will follow a pickup to the field or another tractor in the field.

Congress is under much more budget pressure in 2012 than it was for the 2008 farm bill, Hagstrom says. “There’s no extra money for anything,” he says. “The bill is much more of a regional debate and a debate between traditionalists, who want to provide programs for farmers and hungry people on one side, and those whose top priority is to reduce the federal deficit and reduce government spending.”

As the Big Iron featured event on Ladies Day, the brunch will be held at the Holiday Inn, 3803 13th Ave. S. in Fargo, 10 a.m. Sept. 12. Doors will open at 9 a.m. and the cost is $20 per person. The popular brunch, sponsored by Eventide Community Living, will feature entertainment and a style show. The Big Iron Farm Show “Fun Bus” will be available beginning at 8 a.m. to transport attendees between the fairgrounds and the Holiday Inn in Fargo during Ladies Day.

Good turnouts
The Ladies Day brunch has been part of the Big Iron Farm Show nearly every year, according to Ilene McLean, who co-chairs the event with Mary Morken. “We have always had a pretty good crowd,” McLean says. “A lot of women come with their husbands and this is an activity for them, although there are a lot of people that aren’t farm-related that come, too.” In the past years, 450 to 500 women have been part of the Big Iron Farm Show Ladies Day brunch.

The North Dakota Trade Office is moving the International Visitors Center from the South Morton Building to the north half of the second floor of Schollander Pavilion. This move released the South Morton Building for indoor exhibits. ! NorthStar Genetics is providing a free-will Pancake breakfast Sept. 11 and 12.

at the Horticulture Building on the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo. Learn about hearing loss, injury rehabilitation and organ donation. Save a life by donating blood or plasma. Know your health indicators through cholesterol and glucose screenings. Want to prevent heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes? The North Dakota State University College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Science is offering cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure screenings during the Big Iron Farm Show. Fourth-year pharmacy students perform the screenings. Blood pressure screenings are free, a glucose
screening is $5 and a cholesterol screening is $15. Screening results are immediate, and participants are counseled on steps they can take toward a healthy lifestyle. The Minnesota State University Moorhead speech-language-hearing department, in partnership with the FM Sertoma Club, will be conducting free hearing screenings in their portable audio booth.
