MINOT, N.D. — The North Dakota State Fair in Minot was awarded a total of 15 first-place international awards in categories including competitive exhibits, agriculture and communications from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions headquartered in Springfield, Mo. The fair was also honored with the title Best of Show in Communications. The Communication Awards category is in place to improve the advertising and publicity programs of fairs. The NDSF teams up with advertising

the competitive exhibits area. These exhibits include items entered in competition at the fair and then displayed or presented during the fair. First-place awards received in the Competitive Exhibits Category include: Competitive Exhibit Display Method, New or Unique Division and Competitive Exhibit Photo Series. The purpose of the IAFE Agricultural Awards is to improve the agricultural educational programs of fairs, to help fairs determine ways they might be of service to their exhibitors, the fairgoing public and agricultural businesses. NDSF received first place agricultural awards: Overall Program for Competitive Exhibitors, Overall Agricultural Program for the Non-Agricultural Fairgoing Public, Overall Program for Agricultural Vendors and Video of a Special or Unique Event for

Either Exhibitors or the Fairgoing Public. “We are very excited to be recognized for the emphasis and focus that we place on agriculture. Renae Korslien, fair manager says “We work hard every year to keep agriculture at the heart of the fair.” The awards were presented during the 122nd annual IAFE Convention held in Las Vegas. There are a total of 14 agriculture categories, 11 competitive exhibit categories and 23 communication categories, each divided into five divisions based on attendance. The entries are evaluated and judged by a team of industry leaders, selected from the membership of the IAFE. Information: Visit www.ndstatefair. com or call 701-857-7620. American landmarks and legacies ■

www.medorand.com BILLINGS COUNTY, N.D. — North Dakota’s Billings County is the home of eight National Register of Historic Sites. Five of the locations are in Medora and are easily within walking distance of each other. The sites are part of a commitment by the city of Medora and the Billings County Historical Society to protect, preserve and promote heritage tourism. Sharing Medora’s Horizon is the name of a grant awarded to the City of

Medora to tell the story about the community and the county. Awarded through the Preserve American Grant program, Sharing Medora’s Horizon, is designed to showcase heritage tourism in the United States. Medora is the gateway to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park South Unit, which is located in Billings County. Medora is the No. 1 vacation destination in North Dakota and heritage tourism is central to its business operation. The eight sites and the date on which they became listed on the National Register of Historic Places are: ■ Billings County Courthouse, 4th St. and 4th Ave., Medora, Dec. 16, 1977. ■ Chateau de Morés, southwest of Medora on west bank of Little Missouri River, April 16, 1975. ■ De Morés Packing Plant Ruins,

northwest Medora city boundary, Feb. 18, 1975. ■ Initial Rock, southeast of Medora approximately 20 miles by road, in Custer National Forest, Nov. 7, 1975. ■ Myers School Timbered Lodge, address restricted, Aug. 6, 1980. ■ Peaceful Valley Ranch, north of Medora along Little Missouri River in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, July 13, 1994. ■ St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 4th St. and 3rd Ave. in Medora, Dec. 2, 1977. ■ Von Hoffman House, Broadway and 5th St. in Medora, Nov. 21, 1977. Additionally, the de Morés Park in downtown Medora (the corner of Main and 3rd Ave.) is a parcel in the 128 acres that constitutes the Chateau de Morés State Historic Site. Much of the city of Medora is designated as a Historic Integrity District.

Two buildings, the Roughrider Hotel and the Joe Ferris Store, were reconstructed and renovated to match the western theme that permeates the architecture of the community. Another key visitor opportunity in Medora is its geography, which is a major part of any community. Medora is situated within a breathtaking viewshed that encompasses a major northward flowing water artery (the Little Missouri River), trees, short grass prairie and forbs to sustain a wide variety of birds and wildlife. This natural view-shed is rugged, pristine and unaffected by industrial development, a stark reminder of a world that greeted Theodore Roosevelt and the Marquis de Morés when they arrived in 1883, six years before North Dakota was granted statehood.

Medora to Deadwood Wagon Train Trail Ride

A ride through history

By James Odermann Special Contributor

MEDORA, N.D. — Outdoor lovers and horse enthusiasts can enjoy the best of both worlds in the Medora to Deadwood Wagon Train Trail Ride Aug. 30 to Sept. 7. The ride features winding trails across northwest South Dakota (beginning in Buffalo) through the badlands of southwest North Dakota (ending in Medora). The pace is more than three miles per hour and will give participants the chance to relive the history and lore of the Medora Stage and Forwarding Co. In the fall of 1884, the Marquis de Morés sent the first of four coaches down the trail from Medora and Little Missouri River country to the wild west town of Deadwood in the Black Hills. The towns were part of Dakota Territory. The goal of de Mores was to unite the Black Hills region with major railway traffic. The original distance from Medora to Deadwood was 215 miles, which wagons and riders covered in 36 hours if conditions were good. The cost of the entire trip was $21.50 in 1884. The 2013 wagon train trail ride will cover only 110 miles in the scheduled seven-day jaunt aboard horse or wagon. TRAIL: See Page 8

Country and metal come together

WEST FARGO, N.D. — Randy Houser, whose single “How Country Feels” rose to the top of the charts in 2012 and is also the title track to his third album, will take the grandstand stage at the Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo, N.D., at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9. Houser’s other big hits include “Anything Goes” and “Boots On.” On July 10, Hairball will take the

stage. Hairball is the ultimate “80s Rock” impersonation act, recreating the good-time party atmosphere of the decadent decade with unmatched authenticity. Hinder will perform on Thursday, July 11. Hinder is an American rock band from Oklahoma that was formed in 2001 by drummer Cody Hanson. Members include Joe Garvey, guitar; Mike King, guitar; Mike Rodden, bass; and Austin Winkler, vocals. Hitting the stage on July 12 is Hunter Hays, an American country music

singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He released his debut album in October 2011. The album includes the Top 20 single “Storm Warning,” the No. 1 single “Wanted” and “Somebody’s Heartbreak.” The Band Perry will be featured on July 13. The Band Perry is an American country music group composed of siblings Kimberly Perry, lead vocals, guitar and piano; Reid Perry, bass guitar and background vocals; and Neil Perry, mandolin, drums, accordion and background vocals. Taking the stage the final night of the

fair on July 14 is Sevendust, an American heavy metal band from Atlanta, Ga. Sevendust is composed of Vince Hornsby, bassist; Morgan Rose, drummer; and John Connolly, guitarist. Tickets for the grandstand shows are free with a paid gate admission. Adult gate admission is $8; youth ages 6 to 11 is $4; and children 5 and under are free. TRAIL

Continued from Page 6 Riders and wagons retraced the southern route from Buffalo to Deadwood in 2012. The reenactment ride was split into two segments to give more riders the chance to join the event. For participants on the northern leg of this historic stage coach route, it will be a chance to test the trail, hear the rustle of the breeze, smell the junipers, hear the creak of saddle leather and

feel the swaying of wagons while experiencing the badlands, the blue skies and sounds of the prairie as those first riders did almost 130 years ago. The horse is the common denominator for the event, pulling wagons or carrying riders. “This ride is an opportunity for horse enthusiasts to enjoy some of the most wonderful, scenic country in the world aboard a horse or in a horse-drawn wagon,” says Leona Odermann, CEO of the Medora Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Riders will cross nearly 30 miles of national grasslands in North Dakota.
