common ground, un common experiences 2024 annual report
dear friends,
For the last 53 years, Wolf Trap has proudly brought people together to experience the magical and unique melding of music and nature. In recent years, we have executed on our promise for visitors to feel more welcome than ever at America’s only National Park dedicated to the performing arts. This summer marked the inauguration of new Park amenities and a diverse array of performances that provided uncommon and memorable experiences for every generation of visitors—a tangible manifestation of our commitment to inclusivity.
Summer 2024 marked the opening of the Meadow Commons, a three-story facility designed to integrate into the Park’s natural landscape and benefit all who visit. As the largest capital project supported by the Campaign for Wolf Trap: Our Next Chapter, the Meadow Commons was funded by and built for our vibrant community in an effort to make Wolf Trap more accessible while enhancing the concert-going experience. Expanded picnic terraces and upgraded food offerings encouraged friends and families to gather for pre-show memories. The addition of elevators and accessible walkways ensured Wolf Trap is a place where everyone feels welcome.
The Foundation’s programming continued traditions of quality and breadth in 2024. Across our three stages, each week offered performances for everyone—rock to orchestral, bluegrass to Hip Hop, and ballet to Bollywood. Stirring Wolf Trap Opera productions showcased our talented emerging artists and earned glowing reviews, while exciting children’s performances introduced new cultures to young fans and families at Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods. Beyond the stage, educators and students across the country and the Commonwealth benefited from Wolf Trap’s leading early childhood educational offerings.
We are deeply grateful to you, our patrons and donors, for supporting one-of-a-kind experiences for arts lovers and families. Please enjoy this Annual Report showcasing the many highlights and accomplishments of 2024, none of which would be possible without our dedicated community. Thank you for being a part of this extraordinary period in Wolf Trap’s history.
With gratitude,
Daniel A. D’Aniello Chairman, Foundation Board of Directors
Arvind Manocha President and CEO

Wolf Trap’s Out & About Festival celebrating music, nature, and Pride returned for a second year. Headlined by Grammy-winner Brittany Howard, the day-long extravaganza opened with children’s folk band Laura Doherty & The Heartbeats. In the afternoon, local artists Be Steadwell and Yasmin Williams took on the Woods and Meadow stages alongside internationally recognized artists Okan, Quinn Christopherson, and Lawrence. DC-Afro Brazilian drumline Batalá led fans to the Filene Center for memorable evening performances with Kim Gordon and Jenny Lewis before Howard took the stage for a majestic closing set. Throughout the event, community partners, including SMYAL, Metro DC PFLAG, Equality Virginia, DC Fray, and more, lined the Meadow with booths, games, flower trucks, food trucks, and giveaways for festival goers.
Wolf Trap’s Filene Center earned numerous accolades with several media outlets recognizing it as a top venue on their “Best Of” lists, including Northern Virginia Magazine, Modern Luxury DC, Washingtonian, Washington City Paper, Virginia Living, and Washington Blade. National publications like Forbes, Billboard, and Venues Now also touted recent enhancements with articles showcasing the Filene Center’s new patron and artist amenities.

Community was at the heart of the summer, kicking off with Joyfully Together featuring The Washington Chorus, 13 local choral groups, and host Santino Fontana. Broadway in the Park returned, starring Laura Benanti and Jordan Fisher with artists from Signature Theatre, and NOVA Nites assembled a trifecta of local rock bands Pat McGee Band, emmet swimming, and Virginia Coalition for a ’90s rewind of beloved music. In September, dance enthusiasts attended a pre-performance discussion with The Washington Ballet’s new artistic director, Edwaard Liang, before the premiere of a powerful new work by choreographer Jennifer Archibald.
magical nights with the national symphony orchestra
Returning for its 53rd season at the Filene Center, the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) presented an array of mesmerizing classical and contemporary offerings. Conductor Ruth Reinhardt led the NSO in a sublime program featuring the debut of acclaimed violinist Nijoma Grevious, followed by a stirring rendition of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Cathedral Choral Society and Wolf Trap Opera’s Keely Futterer, Gabrielle Beteag, Ricardo Garcia, and Blake Denson

wolf trap opera’s brilliance
As the premier program for remarkable emerging talent, Wolf Trap Opera (WTO) shined brightly with a season of spectacular productions, inspiring recitals, and much more.
Throughout the season, WTO’s productions received rave reviews. WTO’s sold-out take on Mozart’s Così fan tutte brought new insights to a well-worn favorite. Washington Classical Review recognized the strong performances sharing, “Wolf Trap’s leadership is known to choose the season’s operas according to the strengths of its young singers, and it has assembled a crackerjack cast for this ensemble piece.”
Puccini’s heart-wrenching La bohème captivated audiences at the Filene Center and garnered praise from Broadway World , Maryland Theatre Guide , and more. Stage and Cinema wrote, “With the cast’s emotive singing and enthusiastic performances, this production (which sadly only ran one night) sparkled with wit and infectious joie de vivre .”
In August, WTO’s poignant production of Kevin Puts’ and Mark Campbell’s powerful Silent Night earned outstanding acclaim with The Washington Post writing, “At Wolf Trap, a salient Silent Night resonates loudly…[The] polyglot libretto…was well-served by a strong cast of Filene Artists.”
WTO’s artists also presented a dynamic slate of concerts including a semi-staged UNTRAPPED production of Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with National Orchestral Institute + Festival , Steven Blier’s ¡Te Adoro! , the Salon Series , Aria Jukebox , and two Studio Artist recitals.

WTO alumna and mezzo-soprano extraordinaire Jamie Barton (’09) returned as the 2024 Filene Artist in Residence . Barton worked with the program’s singers in a Master Class on career preparation and earned praise for bringing “vivid expressiveness” ( Washington Classical Review ) to her wide-ranging recital at The Barns.
In August, OPERA America the national service organization dedicated to advancing opera in the US elected the Foundation’s own Lee Anne Myslewski, Vice President of Opera & Classical Programming, as its new board chair.
In the fall, WTO received a record number of applications from more than 1,400 artists hoping to make Wolf Trap their summer home in 2025.
elevating the experience with meadow commons
Wolf Trap’s summer audiences were delighted to discover a striking new addition next to the Filene Center: the three-story Meadow Commons. The impressive structure introduced a variety of new amenities including additional picnic terraces, expanded food service, elevators, upgraded and enlarged restrooms, convenient drink fill-up stations, and a gathering space for members. Designed by esteemed architectural partner Gensler and built by longtime contractor L.F. Jennings, the Meadow Commons perfectly complements the Park’s natural beauty.

During the building’s eight-month construction, a Topping Out Ceremony welcomed leading donors, L.F. Jennings’ construction crew, and Gensler architects to observe the progress. The Meadow Commons officially opened in early June with a Ribbon Cutting event in the Meadow Lounge and remarks from Arvind Manocha, Wolf Trap President & CEO; Dan D’Aniello, Wolf Trap Foundation Board Chair; Ken Bigley, Superintendent of Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts; and Jordan Goldstein, Co-CEO of Gensler.
The Meadow Commons’ two elevators and accessible walkways that connect the Filene Center’s lower levels to the top of the Park are transformative additions for patrons with mobility needs. The building features additional and upgraded restrooms on the second floor, including several accessible and family options.
Throughout the summer, picnicking patrons used the Meadow Commons’ pergola-covered patio and adjacent terraces to enjoy panoramic views of the Park alongside a prominent display about Catherine Filene Shouse, the Park’s history, and the unique public/private partnership between the Foundation and the National Park Service. Thanks to the building’s commercial kitchen and an impressive 15 Concessions windows, hungry concertgoers dined on an expanded range of food and beverage options. The Drink Stop on the lower level offered quick and convenient refills for patrons in between performance sets.
A gem of the Meadow Commons complex, Meadow Lounge , provides an elevated pre- and post-show experience with picturesque views, a top-shelf bar, and wine lockers, making Wolf Trap evenings more hospitable for top donors and partners.
A direct result of the Campaign for Wolf Trap: Our Next Chapter, the Meadow Commons represents the most significant capital improvement at the Park thus far, enhancing the concert-going experience for hundreds of thousands of fans.

multicultural children’s performances attract new audiences
For seven weeks during June, July, and August, the woods at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts came alive with song, dance, and theater as nearly 21,000 patrons flocked to Children’s Theatre-in-theWoods (CTITW) for a record-breaking season.
Young children and families traveled around the world with CTITW’s signature diverse programming that featured 34 performances and 11 debut artists. Meki’s Tamure Arts Group transported audiences to Polynesia, while Choy Wun Lions’ playful lion engaged patrons with Chinese dance and drumming. Carpathia Folk Dance Ensemble kept families on their feet with its “Dancing Kaleidoscope” through Eastern and Central Europe.
Favorites Maryland Youth Ballet, Vital Theater Company, and The Amazing Max packed the house with their productions of Rumpelstiltskin, The Wizard of Oz, and logic-defying magic. Bilingual performances from Lucy Kalantari, Mi Amigo Hamlet & Alina Celeste, and Musiquita rounded out the season.
Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods also hosted musician and social justice activist Fyütch, who presented an original commission for nearly 1,400 young children and educators during annual field trip performances for schools and early childhood centers that partner with Wolf Trap Education.

sustainability through education
In 2024, Wolf Trap focused on creating sustainable education programs by forming new community partnerships, investing in professional development for teaching artists, expanding program access for educators, and leveraging research insights to shape the Foundation’s future work and goals.

creating lasting impact with teachers and young children
Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts continued its commitment to supporting early childhood educators in the classroom and making a difference in the lives of young children through the arts. The Institute team collaborated with teaching artists to cultivate arts-based strategies for early childhood and high-quality arts education experiences that were accessible, equitable, and inclusive of diverse audiences.
Wolf Trap Institute released findings in 2024 based on an evaluation conducted by Manhattan Strategy Group and supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts that underscored the value of the Foundation’s work with educators in the Commonwealth of Virginia. On average, teachers who participated in Wolf Trap’s in-person classroom residencies reported higher confidence in their ability to deliver arts-integrated learning and were observed using more arts integration in their practice compared to teachers participating virtually. The study also found Wolf Trap’s teaching artists modeled strong teaching artist-child interactions. These results reaffirmed Wolf Trap’s plan to continue arts-integrated teacher professional development in current districts and expand into new ones across the state of Virginia.
National Association for the Education of Young Children's CEO Michelle Kang and Managing Director of Early Learning Alissa Mwenelupembe and Wolf Trap Foundation's Institute Director Jennifer Edelen and Vice President of Education Akua Kouyate-Tate visited the classroom with Brightwood ES Pre-K teacher Kalpana Kumar-Sharma and Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist Melissa Richardson
expanding reach through partnerships
Wolf Trap Institute made significant strides during the 2023–2024 academic year by welcoming new affiliates and partners and expanding its groundwork in Virginia. Early in the year, Foundation members met with legislators at a Richmond reception to discuss Wolf Trap’s work in the Commonwealth. The conversation highlighted the impact of classroom residencies on Fredericksburg City Public Schools’ early childhood programs.
wolf trap education at a glance
During the 2023–2024 academic year, Wolf Trap Education:
Supported 104,700+ total educators, families, and students worldwide including 55,000+ in the Washington, DC metro area
Provided services across 26 states , DC , Kenya , and Singapore
Expanded its network to 29 affiliates
In May, Wolf Trap Institute hosted a one-day symposium in Roanoke on social-emotional learning (SEL) through the arts, drawing community partners and educators from more than 40 organizations including Roanoke City Public Schools and other nearby school districts. Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artists Valerie Branch and Wincey Terry-Bryant, along with panelists from New River Valley Child Advocacy, Resources, Education, and Services and Total Action for Progress Head Start, demonstrated arts integration strategies to enhance learning and SEL development in young children. The symposium was instrumental in strengthening Wolf Trap’s presence in the Roanoke region and supporting expansion from 33 to 43 counties/districts in Virginia during the 2023–2024 academic year.
Wolf Trap added three new affiliates to its national network outside of Virginia, increasing the total number of affiliates to 29. The additions bolstered Wolf Trap’s impact in the southeast region of the US with Gulf Coast Florida Wolf Trap, Upstate South Carolina Wolf Trap, and Lowcountry South Carolina Wolf Trap. The new Gulf Coast Florida affiliate, operated in partnership with Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation, brought classroom services to Sarasota, Manatee, Desoto, and Charlotte counties, while Greenville-based Upstate South Carolina Wolf Trap, operated in partnership with South Carolina Children’s Theatre, delivered arts integration to educators and young children in Greenville, Pickens, Spartanburg, Laurens, and Anderson counties. Lowcountry South Carolina Wolf Trap, operated in partnership with Spoleto Festival USA, will work with early childhood classrooms in Charleston, Berkley, Dorchester, Georgetown, Colleton, Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties.

As Wolf Trap Institute expanded the depth and breadth of its US programs, it also embarked on a series of workshops and classroom residencies in Kenya, thanks to support from Kenya Connect and the Gupta Family Foundation. Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist Christina Farrell visited Kisinzini and Kambiti Primary Schools, where she introduced local teachers to arts-based concepts for early literacy and math learning and led workshops for educators and families.
helping students and young professionals grow Wolf Trap extended access for DC metro area students and young people to meaningfully engage with the arts through performances, shared experiences, and on-the-job learning.
The Foundation expanded its Grants for Performing Arts Teachers program to middle schools, elevating its impact to 1,172 students and teachers across 13 public schools in the DMV. Teachers and students collaborated on projects fostering creativity, self-expression, and technical skills. During a field trip to Wolf Trap, students engaged in workshops and panels with teaching artists and Foundation staff to gain insight into potential arts careers.
The Internship and Apprenticeship program deepened Wolf Trap’s ties with area colleges, businesses, and the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce through career fairs and panels. As a result, the program hosted 53 interns and apprentices from 30 higher education institutions throughout the year. Interns and apprentices gained experience across Foundation departments, participated in seminars and field trips, and engaged in coaching sessions to develop skills for future careers. For a third consecutive year, the Internship and Apprenticeship program was recognized as one of the Commonwealth’s top employers for interns by the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership.
