How to choose the correct size heat pump cylinder

Using boilers which can produce 70°C hot water temperatures has meant Gledhill has always used relatively simple small heat exchangers in their hot water cylinders to transfer that heated water to drinkable water. With the emergence of heat pump technology, the need to reinvent the heat exchange was identified to provide the same performance seen in traditional cylinders.

In a 2021 study, the Hot Water Association compared Gledhill’s heat pump cylinder with a traditional boiler and found that the multi-pass technology enabled their heat pump hot water cylinder to reheat 49% faster than a traditional hot water cylinder and reduced the daily energy usage by 33%.

Choosing the correct heat pump cylinder is fundamental when installing a heat pump hot water system and it’s crucial to ensure that the technology in the cylinder helps make the heat pumps even more efficient.

Cylinder volume and reheat time are two important factors that need to be considered when choosing the correct heat pump cylinder size. As heat pump cylinders heat the water to an energy efficient 55°C, a domestic household will us a higher volume of hot water, resulting in larger heat pump cylinders needing to be installed.
