Mission The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) brings recognition to the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring, and researching art by women and by teaching the public about their accomplishments.

NMWA is the only major museum solely dedicated to championing women in the arts.

From the Founder Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts,

Michele Mattei

For the museum, 2015 was a year of remarkable successes. The exhibition Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea was inspired by a conversation with three Catholic women who were helping me in the years before the museum opened. One of them was named Roma because her father was the top layman at the Vatican. The others were major donors to the Church. They asked me what my raison d’etre was. I said, “To show the contribution of women to the history of art.” They replied, “Then you must show Mary, who has inspired every artist throughout history.” I told this at a party and Enrique Segura got up and said, “You do that and I’ll make it happen.” With help from him and his wife Alejandra, we were able to bring it to fruition in NMWA’s galleries. Important works were loaned by the Vatican Museums, Louvre, Uffizi, and other church, state, and private collections. From December 2014 through April 2015, more than fifty thousand visitors came to see Picturing Mary. It received splendid reviews and brought the museum scores of new friends. We were proud to display the work of Magdalena Abakanowicz in the third installation of the New York Avenue Sculpture Project. The museum first showed Magdalena’s work in 1991, in the exhibition Voices of Freedom: Polish Women Artists and the Avant-Garde, 1880–1990, and I had the good fortune to meet her in 2002. After that meeting, she created a magnificent sculpture, 4 Seated Figures, for the museum’s collection. Featuring her public art had long been a goal, and we are pleased to have achieved it. We are also gratified to have received the prestigious Simone de Beauvoir Prize for Women’s Freedom. NMWA is the first American organization to receive the award, and it is truly an honor. These achievements have been possible through the generosity of friends and members. The Board of Trustees, the staff, and the museum’s community of volunteers continue to be very busy, and we look forward to future activities. Warm best wishes,

Wilhelmina Cole Holladay Founder, NMWA

From the Director Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts,

Michele Mattei

This is an exceptional time at the museum! During 2015, we organized the highest-quality exhibitions of art from the Renaissance to the present day, received a prestigious award from France, and experimented with new and innovative ways to reach our audiences in person and online. We truly were honored to be the first U.S. organization to receive the Simone de Beauvoir Prize for Women’s Freedom. Created to mark the centenary of the birth of the legendary existentialist philosopher/feminist social theorist, the prize honors women, men, and associations who, in the spirit of Beauvoir, fight to defend women’s rights. The selection of NMWA for this prize underscores the museum’s efforts to empower women and girls through art, and highlights our growing international reputation. In addition to the much-awaited and stunning exhibition Picturing Mary, which included great works by artists of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, I am delighted that, in 2015, NMWA also presented contemporary artists of significance. From cutting-edge video artists, many of whom gave gallery talks about their art, to the renowned Magdalena Abakanowicz, whose bronze and stainless steel monumental sculptures were on view on New York Avenue, the museum and its environs buzzed with activity. High-caliber education and school programs, Shenson Chamber Music Concerts, community partnerships, vibrant national and international committees, and our first online exhibitions helped the museum to admirably fulfill its mission as the champion of women in the arts. To our community of members, donors, and friends that made these activities possible—thank you! NMWA is a unique museum with a strong purpose, and your loyal support made all our great exhibitions, education and public programs, research projects, and advocacy efforts possible— on behalf of women in the arts, past and present. Sincerely,

Susan Fisher Sterling, PhD The Alice West Director, NMWA

Exhibitions & Collection

Total Art: Contemporary Video June 6–October 12, 2014 Total Art highlighted the inventive processes that sustain women artists’ position at the forefront of video and the medium’s global scope. The exhibition featured works by Dara Birnbaum, Kimsooja, Mariko Mori, Mwangi Hutter, Alex Prager, Pipilotti Rist, Michal Rovner, Margaret Salmon, Eve Sussman/Rufus Corporation, and Janaina Tschäpe. “In its first major review of video work, NMWA reveals how female artists have contributed to one of the most innovative media.”—Washingtonian

Soda_Jerk: After the Rainbow September 19–November 2, 2014 Coinciding with Total Art, a two-screen projection was presented as part of the citywide public art project 5x5. After the Rainbow (2009) combines film clips from The Wizard of Oz (1939) with clips from a 1960s television special starring Judy Garland, blending the fantasy world of cinema with the complex reality of Garland’s life.

Visiting video artists—including Ingrid Mwangi, above, whose work was on view in Total Art—shared their work. NMWA educators also led a series of “Conversation Piece” gallery talks. Visitors were invited to experience the immersive installations and discuss what they saw, heard, felt, and thought.

New York Avenue Sculpture Project: Magdalena Abakanowicz September 27, 2014–September 27, 2015 The New York Avenue Sculpture Project is the only public art space featuring changing installations of contemporary works by women artists in Washington, D.C. The third installation featured internationally renowned artist Magdalena Abakanowicz (b. 1930). Her monumental bronzes representing human figures and dynamic stainless steel birds in flight exemplify universal issues: the power of nature, the force of destruction, and the resiliency of hope.

Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea December 5, 2014–April 12, 2015 Picturing Mary explored the concept of womanhood represented by the Virgin Mary, as well as the social and sacred functions her image has served through time. This landmark exhibition brought together more than 60 Renaissance- and Baroque-era works from the Vatican Museums, Uffizi Gallery, and other museums, churches, and private collections in Europe and the United States. “Paintings by Sofonisba Anguissola, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Orsola Maddalena Caccia…highlight the varied ways in which women artists conceptualized the subject of Mary.” —Huffington Post “In addition to such masters as Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Dürer, Picturing Mary features four early women artists: Sofonisba Anguissola, Orsola Maddalena Caccia, Elisabetta Sirani, and Artemisia Gentileschi, who was a follower of Caravaggio.”—Vanity Fair

Special exhibition features illuminated Picturing Mary online and in print.

A Global Icon: Mary in Context A complement to Picturing Mary, NMWA’s first online exhibition delved into the global impact of Mary. Detailed images and short videos explored depictions of Mary from around the world. An introductory gallery featured the online exhibition, an interactive web preview through MapHook that shared information about the traveling works, and graphic panels that introduced exhibition themes.

A full-color catalogue showcased Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea through images and scholarly essays.

Casting a Spell: Ceramics by Daisy Makeig-Jones May 1–August 16, 2015 Employed at the Wedgwood pottery company from 1909 to 1931, Daisy Makeig-Jones (1881–1945) used her vivid imagination and technical ingenuity to develop decorative china called Fairyland Lusterware. Her intricate designs featured fairies, imps, and goblins. “Visitors to NMWA can see examples of Makeig-Jones’s work in a new exhibition that also explains the advanced glazing techniques that made her work so unique.” —Washington City Paper

Selected New Acquisitions Recent acquisitions highlight women’s contributions to art across time, genre, and medium.

Candida Höfer, Cà Dolfin Venezia I, 2003; Color print, 60⅝ x 68½ in.; and Palazzo Zenobio Venezia III (above left), 2003; Color print, 60⅞ x 60⅞ in.; Gifts of Heather and Tony Podesta Collection, Washington, D.C. Women artists’ pioneering role in photography and their place at the forefront of the medium today are reflected in historical and contemporary photographs accessioned in FY15. Höfer (b. 1944, Eberswalde, Germany) creates meticulously composed images of interiors—public and institutional spaces marked with the complexity of human activity, yet devoid of human presence. Mickalene Thomas, Tote (above center), 2009; Cotton canvas and ink, 15 x 13½ x 3½ in.; Produced by Third Drawer Down in collaboration with International Center of Photography; Gift of Steven Scott, Baltimore NMWA’s collection of multiples—three-dimensional artworks produced in quantity—continued to grow in FY15. Multiples have been especially popular since the 1960s, driven by Pop art’s focus on the massproduced object. Photographs and paintings by Yale-trained Thomas (b. 1971, Camden, New Jersey) center on the black urban experience as it relates to women. Thomas’s double-sided tote bag reproduces two of the artist’s large-scale photographs. Minerva Chapman, Lady Reading by Lamplight (above right), 1895; Oil on canvas, 17¼ x 15¼ in.; Gift of John L. Hazlehurst III Chapman (b. 1895, Altmar, New York) was an important figure in oil painting and ivory miniatures for over five decades. Lady Reading by Lamplight, like many of Chapman’s oil paintings, testifies to her interest in the expressiveness of light and color.

Selected Conservation Projects

Alida Withoos, Still Life with Irises, Morning Glory, Fox Gloves, a Red Lily, and Other Flowers on a Forest Floor (above left), ca. 1700; Oil on canvas, 27¼ x 22½ in.; and Still Life with Roses, Daisies, an Iris, and Other Flowers on a Forest Floor, ca. 1700; Oil on canvas, 27¼ x 22½ in.; Gifts of Wallace and Wilhelmina Holladay These paintings were cleaned and thinly varnished to improve saturation and readability. On view in Super Natural, National Museum of Women in the Arts, June–September 2015. Judith Godwin, Epic (above center), 1959; Oil on canvas, 82 x 100 in. overall; Gift of Caroline Rose Hunt The surface of this large diptych was cleaned, and small losses, scratches, and abrasions were minimized and inpainted. Canvas distortions were reduced. On view in Women and Abstract Expressionism, Denver Art Museum, summer 2016. Élisabeth Louise Vigée-LeBrun, Portrait of a Young Boy (above right), 1817; Oil on canvas, 21¾ x 18¼ in.; Gift of Wallace and Wilhelmina Holladay A paintings conservator cleaned this work, repaired areas of loose paint and losses, and toned previous retouching. A frame conservator fabricated a missing element and gilded and toned it to match the frame. On view in Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, Grand Palais, Paris (September 2015–January 2016), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (February–May 2016).
