FROM THE FOUNDER
Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, In fiscal 2018, we hosted an impressive slate of exhibitions and programs. Revival showcased exciting contemporary artists whose work is represented in our collection. Magnetic Fields: Expanding American Abstraction, 1960s to Today shone a light on several generations of African American women artists creating major abstract paintings and sculptures. These women persevered in the face of many obstacles, and we are proud to have celebrated their accomplishments. Women House was a wonderful international collaboration. NMWA partnered with La Monnaie de Paris to stage this exhibition of artists whose work explored ideas about women and the home. Heavy Metal showcased the museum’s unique network of national and international committees. The committees have expanded in recent years throughout Europe, South America, and the United States—they support NMWA’s work in Washington, D.C., as well as the endeavors of women artists in their regions. Their continued strength demonstrates the power and appeal of NMWA’s mission to people around the world. Once again, I am pleased to see the museum on strong financial footing. We end the fiscal year with an increased endowment, greater programmatic support, many dedicated supporters, and a clear direction. I thank each of you for your continued commitment to the museum and to women in the arts. Sincerely,
Wilhelmina Cole Holladay Chair of the Board

FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, It has been a thrill to see the museum reach new heights and new audiences during fiscal 2018.
Director’s photo by Michele Mattei
As you will read in this year’s Annual Report, our formidable and diverse exhibitions engaged modern and contemporary artists. I also was particularly excited to host 465 artists from the D.C. area at the museum to connect with each other for Now Be Here #4, DC/VA/MD. This group photograph and our first community-focused artist resource fair were created in partnership with Los Angeles-based artist Kim Schoenstadt. In our third season of Women, Arts, and Social Change (WASC) programming, we invited world-renowned poets, including Nikki Giovanni, and artists such as Judy Chicago and Mónica Mayer to the museum’s stage. They shared their art and perspectives with our intergenerational audiences, who now know that Fresh Talks at NMWA will feature inspiring stories and powerful discourse. We were honored as well to welcome European museum directors Laurence des Cars, director of the Musée d’Orsay, Paris; Frances Morris, director of the Tate Modern, London; and Eike Schmidt, director of the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, for Fresh Talk—Righting the Balance III. They discussed ways that they are prioritizing gender equity, committing anew to the goal of shining a light on women artists in their collections and exhibitions. A highlight of the year was photographer Annie Leibovitz’s acceptance of NMWA’s Lifetime Achievement for Excellence in the Arts Award. In her speech at the Spring Gala, she spoke about witnessing a new confidence in today’s young women. She believes that institutions like ours have been wellsprings for this burgeoning esteem. I hope you enjoy this report, and I appreciate your support of the museum.
Susan Fisher Sterling The Alice West Director

ENDOWMENT, INDIVIDUAL, CORPORATE, FOUNDATION, AND GOVERNMENTAL DONORS NMWA is deeply grateful to supporters of the Legacy of Women in the Arts Endowment Campaign, whose generosity guarantees that NMWA will endure and inspire for generations to come. Although we can only list donations of $10,000 and above, NMWA is grateful to all donors to the endowment. We also wish to thank all the following individual donors who made contributions from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018. Your support enables the museum to develop groundbreaking exhibitions, expand its education, library, and outreach programs, and offer other special events to the public. Although we can only list donations of $500 and above, NMWA is thankful for all of its members and friends.
