ANNUAL REPORT FY19

Champion women through the arts Since its opening in 1987, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) has worked to address the art world’s gender imbalance. NMWA brings recognition to the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring, and researching art by women and by teaching the public about their accomplishments. As the latest statistics show, even in 2019, gender bias in the art world persists. Not, however, here at NMWA. In our historic building in Washington, D.C., women artists are celebrated and uplifted every day—and we advocate for their representation all around the world. Discover how NMWA has advanced its mission in 2019 through dynamic exhibitions and programs, collection acquisitions, outreach, and more. FROM THE FOUNDER

Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, The recent year counted many wonderful successes for the museum. NMWA hosted an impressive group of exhibitions and programs, which welcomed many new visitors and members. Our work garnered positive press coverage throughout the year. NMWA celebrated fashion with Rodarte, an exhibition featuring designs from the luxury fashion house led by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy. Their intricate and artful ensembles drew visitors from across the country, and we reached our highest daily attendance rates in the last fifteen years during this exhibition. From a thoughtful profile in Vogue to a panel discussion on the role of fashion in diplomacy, Rodarte inspired people to consider the role and influence of women designers. The museum partnered with the Fabric Workshop and Museum to present Ursula von Rydingsvard: The Contour of Feeling, which featured von Rydingsvard’s commanding cedar wood sculptures. We have long admired von Rydingsvard’s work—we are proud to feature it in the museum’s collection, and, with The Contour of Feeling, we were pleased to host her first-ever Washington, D.C., solo exhibition. Von Rydingsvard also accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in the Arts at our annual Spring Gala, where she captivated attendees with insight into her art. Our twenty-three national and international committees celebrated the exhibition Heavy Metal—Women to Watch 2018 and held other programming in their regions, raising the museum’s profile and opening doors for women artists around the world. Here at the museum, we advanced the process of assessing our historic building, which will help us continue to steward this wonderful place for future generations of visitors. We ended the year on solid financial ground, thanks to the support of many dedicated members and friends. Your sustained commitment to the museum helps to ensure the legacies of the great women artists of yesterday and today. Sincerely,

Wilhelmina Cole Holladay Chair of the Board 2  NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WOMEN IN THE ARTS

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Over the past year, the conversation around the art world’s gender disparity has advanced. More institutions acknowledged the need to acquire and present the work of women artists, but there is still so much to be done. In 2019, as before, NMWA is again leading the way forward! Our exhibitions showcased an exciting range of work by women artists. Betsabeé Romero’s tire sculptures, commissioned by NMWA, debuted in the New York Avenue Sculpture Project—speaking to themes of family and migration. Ambreen Butt’s contemporary take on Indian and Persian miniature Director’s photo by Michele Mattei

painting in Mark My Words presented strong female protagonists. The artistdesigned objects in More is More: Multiples delighted viewers with tongue-incheek commentary on stereotypical attributes of femininity. Engaged crowds returned for more of the museum’s dynamic programming. In the fourth season of Women, Arts, and Social Change (WASC), sold-out audiences participated in provocative Fresh Talk conversations among artists, creative entrepreneurs, journalists, and scholars. NMWA educators hosted film screenings, artist talks, and tours for thousands of students and adult visitors. The Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center continued to grow in prestige and stature. It also organized the annual Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edita-Thon, this year emphasizing women who use their art to effect social change. Our #5WomenArtists campaign moved from awareness to action as it mobilized institutions and individuals from around the world. As you will read in this report, 750 museums and institutions as well as nearly 8,400 individuals pledged tangible actions to support women artists. The coming pages illustrate the many ways that, with members and friends like you, we championed women artists in 2019. Thank you for your support, which enables us to provide our unique and multifaceted platform in support of great women in the arts.

COLLECTION

Gallery Reboot

Acquisition Spotlight

In January, curators reinstalled NMWA's collection galleries, continuing to emphasize connections between historical and contemporary works. The galleries are organized around five themes: family, homelands and migration, rebellion, the built environment, enclosures, and nature.

The museum purchased South African artist Zanele Muholi’s photograph, pictured right, of a young lesbian couple, with funds from The Paul and Emily Singer Family Foundation and additional support from Nancy Nelson Stevenson.

By the Numbers In FY19, the museum’s collection grew with the addition of 87 new works in 9 different mediums:

47 Photographs 1 Vessel 17 Sculptures 1 Artist's book 14 Paintings 1 Silver work 3 Prints 1 Collage 2 Multiples 8  NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WOMEN IN THE ARTS

An artist and activist, Muholi, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, documents the lives of LGBTQ people in their home country. By capturing subjects in moments of intimacy and affection, Muholi emphasizes their humanity. The photograph was placed in NMWA’s “Family Matters” gallery, alongside works by Alice Neel, Marisol, and Angelica Kauffmann—together, these works help represent the broad range of familial experiences.

Women to Watch Committee Activities

Heavy Metal—Women to Watch

Many committees present Women to Watch programs in their regions before or after the NMWA exhibition. The Ohio Advisory Group with the Ohio Arts Council’s (OAC) Riffe Gallery presented Women to Watch Ohio 2018 from May 3 to July 7, 2018. This exhibition showcased the work of ten Ohio women working with metal through sculpture, installation, jewelry, and two-dimensional works.

From June 28 to September 16, 2018, the museum presented Heavy Metal, the fifth installment of the Women to Watch exhibition series, a collaboration between the museum and its committees. The exhibition’s twenty featured artists investigated the physical properties and expressive possibilities of metalwork. Women to Watch is presented every two to three years. The museum works with curators in committee regions to create shortlists of artists working on a chosen theme. From this list, NMWA curators select the artists whose work is presented in the NMWA exhibition.

"[Women to Watch] is a platform to lift women up and celebrate artists who may otherwise be overlooked, and create conversation around women working in innovative mediums." —Hyperallergic

ENDOWMENT, INDIVIDUAL, CORPORATE, FOUNDATION, AND GOVERNMENTAL DONORS NMWA is deeply grateful to supporters of the Legacy of Women in the Arts Endowment Campaign, whose generosity guarantees that NMWA will endure and inspire for generations to come. Although we can only list donations of $10,000 and above, NMWA is grateful to all donors to the endowment. We also thank individual donors and organizations who made contributions from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019. Your support enables the museum to develop groundbreaking exhibitions, expand its education, library, and outreach programs, and offer other special events to the public. Although we can only list donations of $500 and above, NMWA is thankful for all of its members and friends. We also recognize members of the Legacy Society, dedicated NMWA supporters who have included the museum in their estate plans. These gifts are vital to the museum and its future.
