SUMMER VACATION By Molly Lizzio, MA, LPMFT
I
have to go to the bathroom!” It’s a phrase you might hear half a dozen times in the car on your way to vacation this summer. It’s only been 20 minutes since the last time you made a stop, but now the cry is from someone else, despite your best efforts to make sure everyone is on the same schedule. Your threats that they will just have to hold it will soon prove to be empty as you speed towards the nearest rest stop. These are the familiar pangs of a family road trip. Whether it’s camping in Alexandria Bay, driving to Boston to take in the sites, or heading out West - cross country, it’s always a silent prayer of parents everywhere to have this trip not be a scene out of National Lampoon’s Vacation. Family vacations can be simultaneously some of the most stressful and both rewarding situations we face all summer. Oftentimes, the logistics are what trip people up. In National Lampoon’s Vacation, Clark lets the unexpected mishaps of his perfect vacation trip him up to the point of insanity. Do not be Clark Griswold. This is actually a good tip for vacationing and in life. Maybe it’s just because I grew up with a fiercely organized mother, but I’ve always found that detailed planning and research beforehand is an important part of any trip. Take advantage of all the wonderful tools technology provides. Look up places to eat or local grocery stores near where you’re staying. Create a budget that is manageable and realistic. Don’t fall victim to the — “What do you want to do?” “I don’t care, what do you want to do?” “I don’t care.” Guess what? That leads to doing nothing. Make a list of some things you’d like to do in the area. Whether it’s going to a certain attraction, or hanging around and going fishing. If you have a collective list of things everyone wants to do you can go from there. It’s not just planning concerning the direc-

tions, and attractions, but also planning in terms of understanding what this vacation might mean for the people you’re going with. People who travel with me need to know that if we’re driving, I either need to be in the driver’s seat, or medicated in the back seat due to carsickness. The planning is easier when you have kids because typically you build the trip around what they want to do, which is wonderful and gets you a gold star for parenting, but isn’t totally realistic for maintaining your own sanity. It doesn’t make you a mean mommy to take two hours out of the trip and drag your kids to a place you’ve always wanted to see. The kids might not want to go, but the worst that can happen is they might have to learn a lesson in patience and sharing, and the best is their already low expectations can be blown when they actually have fun. Some of my favorite places I’ve been to are places my parents dragged me to and I wound up really liking. Part of being a good parent and fellow traveler is speaking up and taking care of your needs too. When I agreed to go on a trip this spring to California with my mother, I knew I had to sit her down and have a conversation with her. I had to reveal something about myself that I’d kept secret and hidden from her for many years. I had to tell my site-seeing, education and learning focused, on-the-move mother that when on vacation I wanted at least one day of doing absolutely nothing and just hanging by the pool. I had to speak up for the adult I’ve become on the numerous trips I’d taken without her. Thankfully she took the news in stride and we were able to compromise on things I wanted to do, including relaxation, and the jam-packed schedule she wanted to maintain. Once you’ve managed to de-stress via planning, and speaking up, make sure you try to
keep some balance between your everyday life and vacation life. Vacation is all about letting your hair down but remember that you do have to go back to your regular life in a matter of days. It’s not that you can’t indulge; you can and should on vacation - just somewhere between no dessert and two-a-day is a pretty safe place to be. During my recent mother/daughter trip to California I knew I’d be doing walking while site seeing but I felt slightly guilty giving up my heart-pumping cardio for a week, but I just couldn’t bring myself to use the hotel gym. So I took a page out of the trendy celebrity book and we went on a beautiful seven mile hike at one of the state parks. It was a fun experience, but gave me a piece of normalcy as well. The last bit of advice I can give about family vacation is simple: Be present. We get so wrapped up in the pictures and videos that will get filed away and rarely looked at again that we forget to actually be present. It’s wonderful to document the memories, but know when to put the camera down and just be in the moment. If you witness a spectacular fireworks show just sit and watch with your family. No picture of fireworks ever does the experience justice. Some of my favorite memories in life have no picture to accompany them, which forces me to relive it time and time again in order to keep it fresh in my mind. I’m allowed to relive that moment because I don’t have the crutch of a picture. You won’t have pictures of the PB&J dinner after you realize the lid was left off the cooler and all your food spoiled, or when you are huddled around a small table playing cards because it is pouring rain. Some of those unplanned mishaps become the times you and your children relive for years to come.
Don’t fall victim to the — “What do you want to do?”

T
he use of lavender goes back to the ancient Romans, who used the herb to freshen their clothes. They would wash their garments and lay them over lavender bushes to dry. The soothing aroma of lavender continues to be enjoyed to this day. At the Lockwood Lavender Farm in Skaneateles, Karen Wheeler Lockwood tends to the lavender plants, most of which begin to bloom by mid-June. Located about six miles from the village of Skaneateles at 1682 West
Lavender Farm Lake Road, near the shore of Skaneateles Lake, the 120-acre farm is celebrating its 150th year.
For the past 13 years, the Lockwoods have grown several varieties of lavender, which are showcased in the Finger Lakes Lavender Festival each summer. Karen and her husband Gary have their own drying barn and distiller to extract the essential oils for use in a variety of lavender inspired products. From lotions, soaps and sprays, to oils, potpourri, tea, dryer bags and more, lavender can help you to sleep,
relieve headaches, and even be used in culinary dishes like ice cream.
Known for its ability to aid in digestion and relieve aches and pains, lavender oil can be used on your feet, to take a way the sting of an insect, wash your dishes, clean your floors and much more. Stroll through the lavender fields, plan your wedding photos in a sea of purple blossoms, or stop by the shop to see what lavender gifts and treats are available at Lockwood Lavender Farm. Exploring The Depths of Beauty in
Howe Caverns

he elevator doors close behind you, as you leave the lodge and gift shop to descend 156 ft. beneath the earth’s surface. When they re-open, you find yourself in a chamber with a constant year-round temperature of 52º Fahrenheit, far from the sounds of traffic and chaos of everyday life. You are entertaining a simpler world, sculpted by nature in its purest elemental form. With its rocky grandeur, Howe Caverns is the largest show cave in the Northeastern United States. It is also a top tourist destination in Upstate New York, second only to Niagara Falls. Holly Hauser from the Howe Caverns Management Team, recently shared more about this unique natural treasure. How long have people been taking tours of Howe Caverns? People have been touring Howe Caverns since 1843. The first tours were led by our founder Lester Howe. There was a short period of time the cave did close and then re-opened in 1929. We are, in fact, celebrating our 85th anniversary of re-opening to the public this year!
Boats glide along the River Styx in the Traditional Tour of Howe Caverns.
How many people visit the caverns each year and how far away do people come from to see it? We have anywhere from 160,000 – 200,000
visitors a year. Our guests come from all states in the US as well as all over the world. This week we will be hosting the I Love New York China Media Tour for the 13th Miss New York China Beauty Pageant. The winner of this pageant will travel to Hong Kong for the Miss China International Competition. Visiting Howe Caverns, as well as many other attractions, will be the first introduction to New York State for these young ladies and their audience of Chinese heritage throughout the US and Mainland China. What are some of the newer additions you’ve added to the adventure park over the years? Additions to Howe Caverns Adventure Park over the past three years have been our added attractions at Howe High Adventure. We now offer a 4 Tower Zip Line, Ropes Course with 28 challenging elements, 24 foot Rock Wall, an air jumper – great for aerial stunts- and our H2OGO Ball! The H2OGO ball is the most recent addition and is a wet and wild ride 1,100 feet down the front hill of the Howe Caverns Estate! What are some of the caverns’ most remarkable features? Some of the most memorable features of the caverns would be our boat ride on the underground Lake of Venus, our Bridal Altar where we have had more than 650 weddings take place and The Winding Way which is
Each year nearly 200,000 visitors from all over the world take an underground adventure in Howe Caverns.
300 feet of narrow twisting passageways and considered to be one of the best examples of underground water erosion in the world today. What are some things most people might not know about the caverns or their history? There are many interesting things people may not know about Howe Caverns. For instance there are 28 miles of electrical wire in the cave to accommodate lighting. The military used the cave to test radar equipment – could they get a signal when underground 156 feet? Bats hibernate in our cave, but it would be very rare that you would ever see a bat in the portion of the cave where tours are given. And, Howe Caverns will never be in the dark as two large generators on property can produce up to 300 kilowatts of electric power – more than enough to light the entire cave, power the elevators and provide light throughout the
cavern facilities and motel if there were ever a power interruption.
Rotunda, a 107 foot high silo shaped natural dome. Guaranteed to get good and muddy!
Have the caverns ever been used as a movie or TV set?
Are there any plans to expand the tour in the future beyond where the boat ride currently ends?
The caverns have most definitely been used on television and in the movies. From the filming of one of the original Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer adventures to “Savatage” (now known as The Trans Siberian Orchestra) filming their music video for “Hall of the Mountain King” to more recently the Rachel Ray Show and Orange County Choppers. What can you tell me about the adventure tour and what makes it different from the traditional tour that most people take? Our Adventure Tour takes place in a portion of the cave that is not open to the public and is more of a spelunking adventure. We’ll suit you up with coveralls, boots, knee pads, gloves and a helmet with a light – the only light available! You will then crawl and walk your way through The Mystery Passage to the Great
For the future we would like to expand with a tour to Signature Rock. Signature Rock is located over the dam from the boat ride and you will be headed toward the natural entrance to Howe Caverns. It is called Signature Rock as you can still see and read the signatures of those who have been there before you, including Lester Howe himself. Very Cool! What do you hope people take away from their experience of visiting the caverns? We pride ourselves on multi-generational visits, treasured memories for our guests and keeping the adventure of exploration and the connection with nature alive. Howe Caverns is located at Latitude: 42.69484° N | Longitude: 74.39975° W. For more information call, 518-296-8900 or visit www. howecaverns.com.

A little slice of Heaven W
The music starts at 5:30 p.m. Make sure to arrive extra early, as this hidden gem fills up quickly. There is a full-service bar in the Garden and the bands are fabulous. Afterword, try the Hogfish Bar and Grill.
If you choose to fly directly to Key West you will notice right away this is not your typical airport. In the arrival area is a friendly bartender just waiting to serve you your first cocktail as a welcome to paradise. The airport is small, so it takes no time at all to receive your luggage and be on the short ride to your hotel. Shared cab rides are common here so don’t be alarmed if there are others in your cab.
Monday morning we again took the “Short Bus” to town. The day was all about seeing the sights for us. Our first stop was the Hemingway Home and Museum. This historic home was beautiful. We wandered the main house, grounds and pool house where Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote for 10 years. As I walked, I could just imagine life in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s. Then it was off to the Key West Lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters. Climbing the 88 steps to the top of the original lighthouse is work but the amazing view is well worth it. After the view, we toured the Keepers Quarters, learning about life as a Lighthouse family.
ay down South there is a little slice of heaven called Key West. There are several ways to arrive at Key West. You can fly directly, take the scenic four hour drive from Miami, or arrive by high speed ferry from Ft. Meyers. Whichever way you choose, it is well worth the trip. This tiny island has a great deal to offer. From the sun worshiper to the history buff — there is something for everyone.
Since there was a storm on our original dates, we were forced to choose new dates. The Hyatt Key West was not available for the first two nights of our stay, so we arrived at the Ibis Hotel which is just outside of downtown. It was a small island hotel with lots of charm. They offered a free shuttle called the “Short Bus” to several points in town, making it pretty convenient to get around. We checked in and immediately took the “Short Bus” to the Duval St. stop. Duval Street is the heart of Key West. There are hundreds of shops, restaurants, and bars on the two-mile street. Our first stop was the information center. There are great maps to assist in finding your way around. They also sell the tours such as the famous Conch Train. The Conch Train is a good way to familiarize yourself with the area. It is a 90-minute guided overview of all Key West has to offer. Now that you are familiar with the area, it is time to explore on your own. Since our first day was Sunday, we decided to do Jazz in the Garden at The Gardens Hotel. Every Sunday, this boutique guest house opens its private Garden and Pool area to the public with a free Jazz concert.
Harry S. Truman loved Key West so much he visited 11 times during his presidency. I loved seeing the original furniture and other artifacts from our history on display around the Little Whitehouse. One of my favorite pieces was the living room table that converted to poker table Truman and the Generals played at. Since Bess did not approve, whenever she was in Key West, the table was converted to a dining table and poker chips and cognac were stored away. Now it is time for Martini Monday at Virgilio’s. Virgilio’s offers an eclectic variety of their specialty Martinis from 7 p.m. to close for just $5 each.
taking a pedicab to the hotel to change for dinner. Before going to dinner you MUST visit Mallory Square and the Sunset Pier. The street performers are amazing. You have to check out the “Crazy Cat Guy” with trained cats. He has been performing there for over 20 years! After enjoying the sunset, you can wander the streets checking out the menus to assist you in deciding what you are in the mood for. If you are in the mood for Italian, NY Pasta Garden is excellent. Make sure you stop at Sloppy Joes for live local music. On our last day in Key West, we decided to go to the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. There are 60 species of butterflies in the 5,000 square foot aviary. We also visited the aquarium. Although the aquarium is small, it has a lot to offer. They even have touch pools, which include everything from sea cucumbers to a nurse shark. After a full day, we walked down Duval St. and stopped at the most interesting restaurants/bars. Willie T’s is decorated with one dollar bills, Better than Sex dessert restaurant was amazing. We ended up at Sunset Pier at Zero Duval Street. There was a wonderful atmosphere and view which went well with the cold drinks served by a friendly staff. Share your vacation story with us at Facebook. com/womenofupstateny!
I woke up the next morning to slightly sore thighs from all the walking and climbing, so we decided it would be our lazy, beach day. After moving hotels to the Hyatt Key West, which is in a wonderful location, we headed to the Southern Most Hotel and Beach for relaxing and lunch. You can rent beach chairs and they have sand servers to cater to your every whim. After a delicious lunch at the Southernmost Beach Café, we took the short stroll to the Southern Most monument for pictures. Then is was back to the beach for a little more relaxation before

Welcoming your
with a Doula
By Christine Vickers
A
re you expecting your first child and have some anxiety regarding the birth process? Are you experiencing a high risk pregnancy and needing some TLC and hands-on assistance pre or postpartum? Looking to deliver via VBAC and desiring continuous support during labor? Doulas of CNY can assist you in creating a peaceful childbirth journey. Doulas of CNY co-founder Christine Goldman has been helping families find joy in the journey of childbirth for 14 years. As a mother of five, former childcare provider and medical secretary, she felt an early calling to work with families and babies.
for doula training and began this meaningful path of service. “I knew the Lord was calling me to something higher and greater,” she said. Christine is a Christian, as are most of the service providers involved with this organization. “We have strived to be a Christian-based group,” Christine said. “We will pray with the mother and/or family, to create a prayerful experience if they would like, but if they don’t want that, that’s fine too. We don’t push our faith on anyone. Each Doula brings their own special gifts and talents to support a mother and family.” “Doulas serve moms, dads and families during pregnancy, childbirth and beyond,” Christine said. “During pregnancy, a doula might help a mother on bed rest prepare the baby’s nursery, do errands for the family or accompany the mother-to-be to her doctor’s appointments.” During childbirth, based on a consultation that takes place before birth, a birth doula will serve as an additional resource during labor, helping the mother and father feel less overwhelmed and providing a calming and nurturing environment.
Christine Goldman assists a new mother.
“I remember being 10 years old and just feeling this calling to do this type of work,” Christine said. Many years later, she sat watching Oprah, while nursing her fifth child. Oprah was talking about finding your passion. The show inspired Christine to pick up the phone and call a doula she had heard about at a Bradley childbirth class. After gathering some information, she signed up
18
“There is a presence in the room when we are there,” Christine says. “We provide physical and mental support and become the mother’s eyes and their ears.” This may include making sure all the health professionals are aware of the family’s birth plan and the mother’s

wishes. It may be offering comfort measures during labor, for example suggesting a position change, a soak in the tub or using a birthing ball. Doulas offer encouraging words to the mother and may reassure the father during the intense and uncertain moments of labor. It may also mean knowing when to use medical interventions. “We are the mother’s advocate,” Christine said, “but we always support what is medically necessary. We are team players working with the doctors and nurses in all of our area hospitals.” Special circumstances When asked what the role of a doula would be during a cesarean birth, Christine explains that a doula can still provide “continuous labor support” just in a slightly different manner. “In a scheduled c-section or even one that comes after laboring, a doula can help make the mother’s wishes known. Maybe she wants to touch the baby right after he or she is born or have skin to skin contact soon after…. Maybe the family would like to have a quiet room during birth. It’s possible to have a gentle birth experience even if you have surgery,” Christine said.
VBAC deliveries (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) have increased across the country. Upstate New York is no exception to the trend. “VBAC’s are definitely on the rise here,” Christine said. “I get lots of calls about it. I am passionate about this procedure and educating and supporting mothers that elect to give birth this way.” In 2005, Christine helped to restart the local chapter of ICAN (International Cesarean Awareness Network) network. It is an all-volunteer organization that provides support for c-section recovery and VBACS. It also educates to prevent unnecessary cesareans.
The Process CNY Doulas makes the process for selecting and employing a doula seamless. There are approximately five doulas that book independently. When a prospective client calls and asks about the type of service they are looking for they are matched up with someone who meets their specific requirements and who is available during the time frame that they will be delivering. The family would then meet with the doula for an initial consultation and share their birth plan and wishes or share their pregnancy or postpartum needs. Costs for service typically run in the $650 range, obviously
it’s not just about the delivery, it’s about the process. Whether it’s their first baby or the fourth, we become close and almost like part of the family.” “I want to make a special tribute to the doulas that I have worked alongside with for many years,” says Christine. “We are all committed to providing, guiding, supporting and loving families together throughout their journey. ” A recent status from Doulas of CNY’s Facebook page reads in part, “This week we had six babies, taught five private childbirth prep classes, two group childbirth
Giving birth at home is also a trend that has seen an increase. “Our doulas do participate in home-births,” Christine said. “The difference between us and a midwife, who most likely would deliver a baby at home, is that we don’t put our hands on the baby. I have no doubt that we could deliver a baby in a situation where we needed to, but that is not what we do. We are there for labor support from beginning to end. We don’t leave.” All Doulas of CNY are certified through DONA International and have attended over 16 hours or more of DONA approved workshops on topics that include breastfeeding, lactation education and general childbirth education. Doulas are required to attend a certain number of births each year and are observed and critiqued by doctors and nurses. Christine has been a leader in the field and served on the DONA certification committee for eight years, helping women across the country become doulas. She is currently involved at the Christian Health Service of Syracuse, which provides affordable healthcare with many providers. Christine serves as their Family Birth Educator, promoting pre and postnatal healthcare as well as newborn and parenting skills for mothers and their families. Postpartum needs A doula takes on some different roles serving a family after a baby is born. A postpartum doula may offer any of the following supportive measures: breastfeeding support (many doulas are also lactation educators); household help; overnight care; newborn care, while the mother rests; hands on help and newborn education; meal preparation, errands and as is their hallmark, continuous encouragement!
depending on what level of support the family may desire. “We work with everyone and every kind of budget. We offer a sliding fee, we budget with people, we barter and we have worked for free. It’s a myth that people think you can’t afford a doula. I tell people, you call me and we‘ll work it out. I always answer the phone,” Christine says. “We never turn a mom away!” Philosophy When asked about the philosophy that guides her work with mothers and families, Christine said, “it is really about getting into their heart and soul, finding out what they want their birth journey to be like. For me,
prep classes, had six prenatal consultations, calmed a few dads-to-be and are currently supporting two moms in labor.” As indicated, Doulas of CNY serve the Upstate New York community in many different ways. Traveling the world with Samantha Brown

amantha Brown stood on the tarmac with tears in her eyes, looking up at the nose of the plane. She had missed the final boarding call by 10 minutes. She ran 100 feet to meet the parked aircraft, pleading with airport personnel to let her board the flight anyway, so she could make her big audition.
After years of waiting tables, she explained to them that this was her chance to land her dream job. It was now up to the pilot to make the final decision. With her arms outstretched, Samantha shouted up at the cockpit, “Please!” Little did the captain know when he gave her a thumbs up through the airplane window, he would be opening up the door for a future travel host, whose life would change forever. And so the fairy tale began.
Now an authority in her field, Travel Channel’s Samantha Brown has visited more than 220 cities in 49 countries,
filming nearly 200 hours of television programming. When it comes to making traveling fun and exciting, she is opening up a new world of possibility for viewers, one episode at a time. But the former Syracuse University student, who studied musical theater and enjoyed family visits to Skaneateles, N.Y., never anticipated she would have such a rewarding career as a television host.
“Just through a serendipitous trajectory, some work I had done was seen by a production company that was hired by the Travel Channel to produce a show called Great Vacation Homes and they needed a host. So they reached out to me. At the time, I didn’t even really know what a host was,” Samantha said. “I took the job thinking it would lead to something and it did, which was just an amazing career.” She may be adventurous now, but, at first, trying new things wasn’t so easy for her.
“I was very timid, very shy, even when I started my job,” Samantha said. “I just wanted to observe. I didn’t really want to participate, for fear of saying something, mispronouncing a foreign language, just feeling like a fool. And now, I just love that. I love being completely out of my element, like a fish out of water.”

Trotting the globe and chronicling her experiences is what Travel Channel host Samantha Brown does best. Inspired by another famous traveler, Rick Steves who pioneered Rick Steves’ Europe, Samantha found her own way to mix her bubbly personality with her down-to-earth, hometown charm.
“I loved Rick Steves,” Samantha said. “One of the blessings of my job is that we have become good friends. I always watched him growing up. He was just doing things that I never thought I would ever do and then here I was — I was doing them.... I had grown up thinking travel was for the privileged, people who were privileged with money and time. And he gave me a very different experience, something that was incredibly accessible. I always admired him.” For many travelers, wading through the information found in guide books and listening to countless hours of foreign language CDs doesn’t bring the world alive in quite the same way that personal stories and high definition accounts from hosts like Steves and Brown reveal. Yet part of the fun of hosting a travel show is that not everything is scripted. Although Samantha says as much as 90% of the itinerary is pre-planned months in advance, she also leaves room to make new discoveries along the way. “I used to be a very intense
researcher of places, so I felt like I would know everything,” she said. “And I found that when I arrived in these destinations... I would have an almost academic experience of, ‘Did I get this right? Do I remember the dates of when this was here? Do I remember the wine choices and do I remember how to pronounce it?’ And I found that was way too much pressure.” “Now I do enough research to get me excited about the trip, but I absolutely leave a lot for me to discover - just to have more of a childlike discovery of a place that you don’t know everything. I think that’s difficult
for, not just adults, but especially Americans. I think we like to be in control — I know I do. And we don’t like feeling like we don’t know about something. I have found that travel has allowed me to let that go.” Growing up, Samantha’s fondest memories of travel included family vacations to Cape Cod, Mass.
“That was our place,” Samantha said. “We would pack up the station wagon and drive. I loved Cape Cod for being somewhere different. It really allowed us to be different. I started to realize, certainly now looking back, the power of travel to truly allow a

family to connect.”
As she experienced more of the world, Samantha began to develop a deep love for places like Cambodia and other countries in Southeast Asia, with a rich cultural heritage.
Though some may find it daunting to plan a trip to a place they’ve never been before, where the residents speak another
language, the value of travel is certainly priceless.
“Don’t be afraid,” Samantha said. “So many people I know were scared. I was scared. Once you start, you really catch the bug, because it’s not something you have to be perfect at. It’s just such an amazing experience to be outside of yourself... It’s amazing how being somewhere affects you mentally, and just how it really changes your life. Because you see yourself in a very different way that you don’t at home. At home we have everything that keeps us safe. We have our four walls. We have the car. We have the coffee shop that we always go to, and when we walk in, everybody knows our name. There’s something so invigorating when you have total anonymity. That is what you have when you go somewhere else. No one knows who you are. And you get to be, I think, your purest self. It truly is a break from ourself. I always say that if you ever have a problem you just can’t get through, go
somewhere. Go somewhere different. Stay in a hotel. Drive. If it’s another country, wonderful! Because again, when you are somewhere different, you get to think differently. And all of a sudden the solutions that were never there to the problem that you’ve always had, arrive. They get through, because you have literally opened your mind to other things. You’re opening up your mind to a new language or a new food or a new city in the United States... It affects you the same way, in that you’re seeing things in yourself differently. And that can change your life.”
Samantha’s tips for turning a good vacation into a great one: 1. Plan 1 or 2 things per day. Don’t overdo it. 2. Always do something that challenges you. Whether that is bungee jumping or trying foreign cuisine. Really stretch your boundaries. 3. Try to find out where that up-and-coming district is and talk to the locals.

DANCING with Alyson Stoner
By Michael Aaron Gallagher • Photography courtesy of Sundari PR and priorities in life, which is not at all about hoarding success for myself, but just truly being humbled by how brilliant the world is and how much there is to learn and see.” This year, Alyson is taking Hollywood by storm with several new projects on the horizon, including the newest installment of the popular Step Up movie franchise, which hits theaters on August 8.

he’s focused. She’s driven. And she’s as talented in front of the camera, and in the recording studio, as she is on the dance floor. But that’s not what makes Alyson Stoner so incredible. In a world of Hollywood glitz and glamour, she is also thoughtful, intelligent and philosophical. She runs downstairs for a moment to find an inspirational poem to share with me, during a recent interview. An adaptation of Kent Keith’s “Paradoxical Commandments,” they are the same words reportedly found written on the wall in Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta — known popularly by the title, “Do It Anyway.” Alyson also recites the beloved quote by Marianne Williamson, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” But it is her final saying that resonates with the most wisdom: “Who you are is what you do when no one is watching.” For a girl who has grown up in the spotlight as a Disney Channel star on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Phineas and Ferb and in the Camp Rock movies, she could very easily have been swept away by the temptations of fame and the allure of fortune. But being the same person in her private life as she is in public is important to Alyson. “They are empowering quotes,” she said. “And they remind me of my value structure

“I play Camille Cage, who was originally Channing Tatum’s little sister in the first Step Up installment,” Alyson said. “I reprised the same role in Step Up 3D, and played opposite Adam Sevani, the character Moose. We sort of kindled a relationship at the end of that movie. Well, now in Step Up: All In, I’m continuing my relationship with Moose.” Over the years, Alyson has grown up in the role, making it one of her longest acting projects to date. “I have enjoyed playing Camille because as she’s evolved, she’s learned her own worth within a relationship,” Alyson said. “She’s often considered a team player, and although there’s nothing wrong with being a team player and not the leader, I think it’s important for her to recognize her voice and value in different situations.”
tures, different dance styles and I think we also showcase individual talent uniquely, as opposed to forming characters first and then finding someone to hire. Often dance films find the people and build the character around their specialty, so people are really highlighted. Then, of course, for the young demographic we have the classic love triangles and inner conflicts. So it’s very relatable and obviously highly entertaining.” Despite the challenging choreography and long hours spent practicing in rehearsals, Alyson was especially suited for the role with her strong background in dance. “At the age of 3 to 6 or 7, I studied technically in ballet, tap and jazz,” Alyson said. “When I moved to Los Angeles, I incorporated hip hop into the repertoire. Since then, I’ve studied ballroom, underground, salsa, house dance, popping, locking, and different specialties like break dancing.” As a kid, Alyson danced in music videos for recording artists Missy Elliott and Eminem.
The Step Up franchise has joined the ranks of some of the most successful movie franchises in Hollywood history. The previous films have grossed more then $500 Million in box office revenues worldwide. “I believe the Step Up franchise has been so enduring because we capitalize on what we know the successful formula is by now, which is mainstream, trendy music. It’s the heartbeat of the film — the soundtrack. We infuse international flavors by incorporating different cul-

“Who you are is what you do when no one else is watching.”
“I’m most compelled by hip hop, because I myself am a very calculated, robotic, mechanical human,” Alyson said. “Hip hop is about freedom, creativity – really any dance genre – but specifically for me, that’s what hip hop evokes. And it’s been the biggest challenge, so that’s the one I like to tackle.”
But I like to use it as a doorway to broader lessons that they’ll carry with them, whether or not dance remains in their lives.”
Overall though, some of her favorite songs to dance to are ballads by neo soul artists like Janelle Monáe and India.Arie.
“I’m passionate about humanity. I’m passionate about having compassion for understanding where [people] come from before I seek to judge or say things about them. I’m passionate about service-oriented living and putting others ahead of yourself, even in your own work,” Alyson said. “I’m passionate about the arts and I’m passionate about education. I have an interest in implementing curriculum into the school system via art or an actual written-out program to teach emotional intelligence and to prepare young people to increase their own self-awareness, so that they can navigate the world and relationships around them.”
“They’re soulful and they’re often ballads,” she said. “It forces me to slow down and listen to the lyrics of them, the melodic structure and find musicality to follow with my movements.” With years of experience in the field of dance, Alyson shares her knowledge with young people around the world who are interested in learning the art. “I believe that you don’t truly know something until you can teach it,” Alyson said. “And my goal is to impart wisdom that helps in life as well as on the dance floor, for my dance students. I’ve been teaching now for 10 years around the world. We teach basic choreography combos, but we also work on the anatomy of different movements in your frame and precision, musicality, creativity and freestyle.
Through her many artistic endeavors, Alyson continues to inspire and educate people around the globe.
Whether she is recording original tracks in the studio, kicking it on the dance floor or dazzling audiences on the big screen, Alyson Stoner continues to step up, leading others by example. To connect with Michael Aaron Gallagher, follow him on Twitter @MichaelTVNews.

Vintage vs. Antiques

eality TV brings our attention to many things we would have never thought about. Storage Wars and American Pickers give you the impression that there are hidden treasures out there just waiting to be found. The shows glamorize amazing finds that will make you tons of money. So, when Saturday rolls around, you wake up early and head to the weekly garage sales and estate sales in search of some of those treasures. I have even ventured out looking for the next undiscovered gem. As Frank Fritz from American Pickers would say, he likes buying smalls (items that are not large). I, too, look for the little things that do not take up much space, like the various styles of Depression glass. They have so many different patterns and colors that compliment a room’s décor. I always thought, “Wow, these are really cool antiques.” Well, they are not! They are vintage. At first, I was a little confused about the difference between what is vintage and what is an antique. So, I set out to

By Mary McCandless discover what separates the two and what exactly is a picker. My first stop was to see Josephine Snook of The Heckled Hen in Manlius, N.Y., to find out what she thought of American Pickers and if they are antique dealers. According to Snook, “American Pickers is entertainment and they are dealers.” Most of their picks are set up months in advance, and she said they could never get the prices that they place on their picks. Also, it is not financially feasible to travel all of the U.S. in hopes of happening upon someone’s property and finding tons of goodies to pick through. It also turns out that most pickers would not travel state to state just to get two or three things. Pickers will hang around auctions until they are
done, then make an offer to the auctioneer (or family) of one price for everything that is left. They would then sort out what they bought and make piles of items that they can sell to different shops, such as The Heckled Hen. Josephine has a large selection of vintage items with some antiques too. She has hundreds of items in her store and her biggest seller is her large selection of Pyrex cookware, which is very durable.

Josephine said that much of the new CorningWare cannot be used in the oven or on open flames. The Pyrex that she has is in big demand. It is extremely durable and cannot be found anymore. Josephine gets most of her inventory from people who either come in or she will go to their house and see what items she would want in her store.

chairs, which are called make do’s. Chris has sorting tables that were used to sort beans and other items. I found out that a lot of pewter was used then to make utensils. It makes you realize that they had to use whatever was available, not knowing the dangers of particular metals. Chris not only has beautiful antique furniture and items, she also has exceptional reproductions, decorative table cloths and more.
So, now that we have just had a taste of the vintage — it’s on to the antiques.
Take a step back in time and get the feel for how people lived back then and even purchase some really cool pieces to have in your own home.
Remember, I always thought that if I found something that was over 50 years old, it was an antique. Well, I found out differently. Vintage is anything that is not over 100 years old. Antiques, of course, are more than 100 years old. That was a big surprise to me. I guess I have a lot of vintage items in my home, after all.
Chris told me she finds a lot of her items in Pennsylvania, but travels to many states to find these great antiques. There are lots of antiques you can find in someone’s basement or backyard. So, get up early and get on the treasure hunt trail. But if you cannot find what your looking for, stop in and see these great ladies.
I wanted to find the Antiques to get a good look at what truly is old. So I headed over to The Colonial Housefitter in Jamesville, N.Y. Owner Chris Esposito showed me some really beautiful early American pieces, all of which are antiques.
The best part of the treasure hunt is the people you can meet, the Vintage sculpture from The Heckled Hen in Manlius, New great finds that are out there, and York. his year the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Reaearch Fund is bringing the Lost 80’s Bash to the SRC Areana on August 2nd. Many of these bands will take you back to the 80’s featurning Naked Eyes, Flock of Seagulls, Animation, and of course Benny Mardones a Central New York favorite. We wanted to get Benny’s take on participating in such a great cause. So we asked Benny to tell us a little about himself. Q.Can you talk a little bit about your connection to Central New York over the years and what you like most about the area? A.At the worst time in my life, when everything was gone and my career seemed over, the people of Central new York welcomed me like a long lost son and that’s why I love it here - they were there for me when no one else was. I have been all over the world, and met everyone from the biggest rock stars, to politicians to titans of industry... and I have never met people who are as honest, sincere, loyal and loving as the people of Syracuse. Q.Are you surprised that you’ve maintained such a loyal fan base in Syracuse throughout the years? A.It never ceases to amaze me. And I am as loyal to them as they are to me. No matter where I go, I talk about how incredible Syracuse is...even the snow! Q.What does it mean to you to be able to help out with a fundraiser like this? A.I have spent my entire career doing benefits and helping out where I could. I have worked with Make-A-Wish and different Parkinson’s charities just to name a few. This event is different. It’s something I wanted to do for years, and I was thrilled last year that we were able to launch this. It

takes a team of people almost ten months to get this show organized and my hope is that it gets bigger and better every year, and we make larger and larger donations to the charities involved. All the bands and organizers are so thrilled that we can be a part of this. And how else could we put together a show with all these bands? There are 8 Billboard Top Ten hits among all of us, something like 16 top twenty songs... and some of the most loved songs of all time. This could only happen as part of fundraiser for an incredible charity. A.Is there anything you’d like to say to people about coming out and supporting the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund? A.There’s a special place in heaven for people like Carol M Baldwin and her family. My friend Doug at the Gem Diner always says, “ I hope you never need them, but if anyone in your family ever gets Breast Cancer the Baldwin’s will be your first call, and they will be there for you and fighting with you. But maybe, if we all step up now and support them before we need them... well... maybe they will help find a cure forthis horrible disease and your family will never have to go through that hell” We do this show for a lot of reasons. And if the fans come out and support this show, and by proxy the charities involved, we will keep putting them on. Q.What do you hope people take away from your performance? A.There is nothing like the feeling of getting a crowd rocking and feeling that energy and feeding off each other. I hope the fans come and have a great time, sing some great songs and support a great charity. This is one of the shows that is going to special. The kind you talk about for the rest of your life, so don’t miss it!

Small business truly is the heartbeat of America. According to the SBA Office of Advocacy, there are 2,039,018 small businesses in New York alone (as reported in 2013). The SBA also estimated that in 2011 there were 621,000 woman-owned businesses in the state, accounting for 30.4% share of all businesses. When looking at the industry rankings, retail sits at the top with 172,658 small firms, with 53,604 of those categorized as 1-19 employees. Here in Baldwinsville, we have witnessed a steady growth of retail establishments that reside among those rankings. The Baldwinsville Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize Beyond The Attic Door as this month’s featured member; a true asset to not only our economy, but to the charm of our Village. Entrepreneur and business owner Diane Richardson is seeing her vision come to life and mature right here in the Village of Baldwinsville. No longer a dream, Beyond The Attic Door has taken roots and is thriving beyond Diane’s expectations, since opening her doors in September 2012. For those who like shopping for treasures, Beyond The Attic Door will not disappoint. Not only will you be met with the warmest of greetings, you will also be treated to a vast array of vintage and new home décor, including glassware, china, art, linens, furniture, as well as gently loved clothing (some of which is brand new). An added bonus for Diane’s guests – all items are carefully considered and priced for today’s market. Beyond The Attic Door hosted a special event, a Grand Re-Opening, on July 12th, in celebration of this store’s relocation to a larger space due to expansion. The Chamber of Commerce was pleased to conduct a ribbon cutting at this public event, which was very well received and attended. One customer even found a Christmas gift during this celebration! I asked Diane what she likes most about conducting business in Baldwinsville. Her response is simply stated, yet genuine; “I love my customers and consignors and enjoy watching them find something that they have been searching for. I also enjoy seeing them find an item that brings back memories of a loved one as they are shopping in the store.” Beyond The Attic Door is located at 5 West Genesee Street in the heart of Baldwinsville. You may contact Diane by calling (315) 430-4412. Take time to visit and explore what rests “Beyond The Attic Door” – you just might find your own treasure! Women on two wheels M
otorcycling and bicycling have historically been regarded as activities for men. But the truth is that many women enjoy both. And women’s participation in two-wheeled sports is on the rise. Ben “Bike Lawyer” Rabin is a local attorney who helps people, including women, who have been hurt by someone else while on two wheels. Ben is an avid bicyclist and motorcyclist and regularly rides both. Q: What percentage of the time do your cases involving women? A:“When I first started doing this many years ago, the women’s involvement was usually as a passenger on a motorcycle. Now I see so many more women on bicycles or driving their own motorcycles. It is awesome to see women taking control, feeling the freedom and power and enjoying themselves.” Q: Is there some advice you have for women who are just starting out on the bicycle or motorcycle? A: : “There are a lot of laws in NY that spell out our right to be on the road, including one that gives bicyclists the same rights as any other vehicle out there. “Own those rights and be confident out there. “ Q: Does that mean that bicyclists should ride just like cars? A: No. We have a whole bunch of rights that we get, but we also have
lots of restrictions. For example, bicycles are required to ride as far to the right as possible unless preparing for a left hand turn or avoiding unsafe conditions. The key is for anyone who is going to be on a bicycle or motorcycle to understand that there are some special laws that apply to us and learn them.
Q: Your business deals with accidents, right? A: “Yes, and that’s all we do. I believe in learning one area of the law and learning it well. I’ve practiced law for 20 years and almost all of it has been working on accident cases. Q: What kind of factors come into play after an accident? A: “It gets very complicated. There are certain expenses (like medical coverage and lost wages) that are covered automatically if you are on your bike and hurt by a car, but those same expenses are not covered if you are hurt while on a motorcycle. Property damage can also be a fight – if you don’t have specific insurance to cover your bicycle or motorcycle, you have to fight with the insurance company for the driver that caused the accident to get reimbursed for that stuff. But the biggest battle is usually for the compensation you deserve for your injuries. Many times insurance companies just don’t want to pay a fair amount, and I have to fight to make it right. Q: Are there other issues you
Ben Rabin
think bicyclists and athletes should know about before they get out on the road? A: The biggest tragedy I see is the bad insurance coverage carried by the drivers that hurt my clients. The minimums in NY are very low. You should not rely on someone else’s insurance to compensate you. It is imperative to make sure you have your own coverage so that if something bad does happen, you know you will be covered. I don’t sell insurance, and don’t have a preference for which company people use. The important thing is the kind of coverage that bikers get to protect themselves. “I just want people to make sure they have the right kind of insurance before they head out on the road.”

Secrets of a Registered Dietitian: Looking and Feeling Fabulous in Upstate NY By Linda Quinn, MS, RDN
I
eat a fruit and/or vegetable anytime I eat anything. Plant foods rule! Although you think you are not hungry for an apple or a peach, you will be so surprised — that extra item on your plate can make all the difference. When you fill up on produce, you don’t have room for that extra piece of pizza or that second helping of bread. The extra vegetables aid digestion so you don’t end up with the “Pasta Bloat.”
from adults. Be more childlike, and you will feel and look years younger. I play almost every day and double on the weekends! Whether roller-blading, riding my bike along the Erie Canal, or hiking in the woods, I am witness to the sites, sounds and smells of all that is Upstate New York. I revel at all the different birds, fish, turtles, snakes, muskrats, raccoons, beavers and deer
I eat three meals a day and never miss a meal! I eat an extremely large salad everyday with assorted greens, herbs, nuts, seeds, local cheese curds, chick peas and lots of high quality olive oil. Fiber filled produce is the way I can “eat a lot” and stay slim. Adding the olive oil helps the body to absorb all the protective phytonutrients. Whenever I am at a party I see so many women with empty plates and a few pieces of meat. Bad idea! Load your plate up with vegetables. Vegetables offset the damage from meats and fatty foods and actually flush the carcinogens out. You’ve heard of Detox Diets? Forget the man-made potions and pills, fruits and vegetables are natural detoxifiers.
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Secret Movement: Pilates “Pilates Think” is a way of carrying your body differently. It took me a while to really get it, but I learned that I could appear taller and thinner by standing up straight and activating my core. Don’t let this be confused with “Holding your breath” which many people do to appear thinner. Through Pilates you learn to truly change your posture and use your core instead of your back. It will change every exercise you do. Work on your posture and look and feel better than ever! Play the Pounds Away Exercise. Most people hate it. Think about the terminology. I have to go “work out.” Instead think: I am going out to play. I like to feel young everyday by acting young. Play is one activity that separates children

etables we grow on the grill. From eggplant to peppers, beets, onions, broccoli, squash and tomatoes, simply dice and add olive oil, sea salt and pepper and grill. Herbs, cilantro, basil, parsley, dill and rosemary, located directly next to the grill can be added just near the end of the cooking process for nutrition and flavor. Add protein with grilled tofu, shrimp, scallops, fish, beans or corn. A great starch to add to the mix is whole grain couscous because it only takes five minutes to make. We add peanut sauce or pesto for additional flavor. We are amazed how delicious the food tastes fresh picked from the garden each evening. Even if you don’t have a garden, make weekly trips to the farmer’s market for the freshest produce anywhere. Plan your meals around the seasons.
that I see along the way. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in the Osprey or Great Blue Heron that I see along the trail, I forget I just rode 20 miles. Nature is a great way to connect with your body. Play is not a chore that I “have” to do each day. It is the most exciting, fulfilling part of my day. Learn to play again and enjoy the pleasure of natural movement. Cook Yourself Healthy We have a big fruit and vegetable garden in our backyard. From June until October we have fresh raspberries and I literally eat about 4 cups a day. We cook whatever veg-

Happiness is like a pie chart. 50% is hereditary. 10% is your circumstances. But a full 40%, is what we all have control over. I am lucky I come from happy parents. But, even if you don’t, you can still learn to be a happy person. We have two choices. We can be happy or unhappy. The problem is when we are unhappy we make the people all around us unhappy too. Choose to be happy for one week. No negative talk. No negative feelings. Say hello and smile at everyone you pass by. Sing in the car. Dance when you hear music. Watch or listen to comedies and comedians instead of the news. Call an old friend and laugh about all the fun times you had together. Find the joy in spending time with your family and friends. Spend time every day doing something you are passionate about. You will find that by the end of the week, you will be a happier person. Laughter and smiling is so good for your health and your soul. Remember, life is good. It’s OK to enjoy it. Linda Quinn, MS, RDN is the Chief Happiness Hero at Island Girl Living, LLC.
