Fame & Fortune S

ocial media has changed our world, not just in the way we interact with friends and family, but also with public figures. We feel closer to celebrities and politicians in a way unprecedented throughout history. This is both exiting and worrisome. The fact is we don’t actually know most of these people, yet our idol worship has gone through the roof. Because we get a look at what our favorite celeb had for breakfast, or an update on their thoughts on the morning traffic doesn’t mean we know any more about them as people than we did before. The only difference is now millions see the information, and it’s presented under the guise of being more “real.” There’s always been a fascination with the rich and famous. They represent a reality that is for the most part unknown to the masses. The problem is when we idolize something or someone, we’re seeing only select parts of them. This creates a distorted view of not just of that person, but distorted expectations grow about you, your family, and society as a whole. When we see bits and pieces of a person, it’s the beginning of dehumanizing them. But even us non-famous folk are guilty of this one. We pick and choose what parts of our lives we share with the public, and in general we put out a persona that doesn’t quite reflect our less than perfect lives. Without realizing it, by only portraying our most perfect parts, we’re actually creating comparison and competition with other people’s most perfect parts. While in general this is a very natural process, and we’re all guilty of it on some level. It starts to become extreme when people are comparing themselves to unrealistic standards. We’re bombarded with Photoshopped images demonstrating ideas of beauty and fitness or impeccably dressed stars whose clothes and jewels often have been loaned or gifted.

By Molly Lizzio, MA, LPMFT

We need to remind ourselves this is a limited and distorted reality that is lunacy to compare ourselves to. The truth remains that the famous are just like everyone else and put only their best updates, pictures, and news out there. I’ve yet to see a major celebrity post about the addiction that is causing their lives and careers to slip through the cracks. Athletes don’t usually Tweet about going broke after being taken advantage of financially by almost everyone in their lives. A famous starlet might Instagram a picture of her five-star meal, but it may have all been staged for the camera due to her rampant eating disorder. What’s worse is when the public does learn of the skeletons in our beloved figure’s closet, it’s front-page news. Entertainment for the masses. We look at them and worship them until we find out they’re real, and then we criticize them. The sad truth is that who this most often happens to is fellow women. When a love triangle erupts in Hollywood the man is left out and the two women are fiercely pitted against each other for the rest of their careers. When a leak of naked celebrity photos is released it’s almost completely young women, who are then called cruel names and shamed for daring to take photos in private. And heaven help us if two stars wear the same dress on the red carpet. We stick them in a magazine side by side and vote “who wore it best.” This pattern plays out across all spectrums of media - including social media. We so thoughtlessly criticize the rich and famous with the justification of, “Oh they’ve got millions, they don’t care.” It’s absurd to assume people with extreme amounts of money or fame cannot be hurt by overly prying eyes, cruel words, and harsh judgments. Where does the line end - race, religion, gender, sexuality? I’m not saying the rich

and famous necessarily need their own advocacy movement. What I am saying is they fall under the same umbrella of humanity the rest of us do. Whether it’s Cleopatra, Queen Victoria, John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe or Kate Middleton, it’s been well established that we tend to idolize the elite among us. As the years and technology ticks on and we begin to learn more and more about these famous figures, let us bear in mind that these beautiful, rich and famous people are actually much like us. By putting people on such high pedestals they have much further to fall. If we’re going to compare ourselves to these people, to our determent, we have to be consistent across the board and have sympathy for them when they show their human mistakes. This might not seem like a very important thing to work on: “be nice to the celebrities.” It’s just a very clear example that if we’re intolerant against those we revere, what’s going to happen to the every day woman next to you when she says or does something less than perfect? I assure you negativity has a way of spreading to many areas of our lives. When you scroll through your Facebook feed, take note of all the negativity you see and think about how that affects your mood and energy in this moment. The point of social media was to get to make connections of all kinds: from the President of the United Sates to your 86 year old grandmother. Our words have power and reach. We are responsible for making decisions about the tone of those words. Choose positivity. Choose, education, enlightenment, and kindness. It’s important not only for our children, our gender, and our own mental health - but it’s one small piece in making the world a better place.

The Art of Making

WINE

By Mary McCandless

F

or most of us, as soon as the kids are back to school, or as summer comes to a close, we start to think about the cold. Autumn comes upon us so quickly and then winter. Some love it, some cannot wait until it is over. If you are the latter, then maybe you should try some fun and tasteful hobbies to pass the time. I am always trying to find fun new things to do or discover, especially when the cold sets in. Wine making is a great way to create many of the wines you enjoy throughout the year, and what better way to think Spring! Did you know that you can brew your own wine and enjoy the first sips of what you created with your own two hands by Spring. There are beginner kits that come with everything you need. The kit includes all of the pre-measured additives, containers and tools needed, and of course easy directions. You can also purchase a large variety of grape concentrates from many different areas. Choose from four main types of wine kits - pure juice, fully concentrated grape juice, partially concentrated grape juice, and kits that combine juice and concentrate. But for beginners lets keep it simple. I stopped by L&M Wines, and spoke with Lee Bortel. He has kits that make six gallons of

10

wine. You will get everything you need to start, except the bottles. I asked him what goes into making wine and here are the basics. The process is a living organism, yeast consuming sugars and the giving off of three waste products: Carbon dioxide gas, a little heat, and alcohol. You have to let the first two escape, and capture the alcohol. Basically give them the environment to do that, which means have the right room conditions and more importantly, cleanliness. There are other things out there that will affect the flavor. So sanitation is imperative. It sounds like a lot of work but really isn’t and from your batch of wine you will reap about 30 bottles of wine. What a great way to pass the fall and winter months away. Have some fun making a variety of wines! Patience is a virtue in wine making and it will take a little time. No matter what type of wine you like, you can do it yourself. When you have bottled it, get creative. Place fun or whimsical labels on your bottles, and name your wines with your own name ideas. They now become great gifts for your family and friends. Stop in and speak to the expert and get more information and everything you need to make your own wine at L&M Wines Etc., Inc. 2100 Park Street, Syracuse, NY 315-428-9463.

The Art of Making

BEER

By Mary McCandless

N

o witches’ brew here, just beer. All of the flavors that you want buy, and brew. If you have the love of beer, you can make Pales, Lagers, Bocks, Pilsners and more. The flavors are endless. Want to get started? Here is your chance to learn the basics and decide if this is a tasteful hobby that you would like to start. As with wine, beer kits come with everything you need, except bottles and the pot to boil it in. To kick off the fall weather there is a Winter Beer. They are fuller and thicker along with a lot of Malt. Spice it up with cloves, nutmeg, pumpkin or just use malt and hops. They are made with less water and have higher alcohol content. However, for the first timers keep it simple. How it all works is what I wanted to find out, so I asked Ed Wren of E.J. Wren Homebrewer, Inc. He has been doing this for 22 years, so I’m sure I found the right person. Ed says that you can brew beers better than what you can find in stores. There are four necessary ingredients - water, hops, yeast and malt. Starter kits have prepackaged ingredients, a recipe book and equipment. Ed also has a variety of hops for your homebrewing. Kits are relatively inexpensive, especially when you see the yield you get from each batch. Ed has kits for the beginners and everything you need if you are a seasoned brewer. For you first-time brewers the Kit has everything you need including instructions and a recipe book.

Here is the brief process to get started. You will need to first cook it in a pot using about half water with the ingredients (syrup), with hops and yeast provided. Then when it has cooled to room temperature, then siphon or transfer it to your fermenter combined with the other half of your water, which should be cold. Once it has cooled to room temperature, add your yeast and the fermentation process starts. There is an airlock to keep the fermenter sealed while it ferments. The fermentation process takes about a week to ten days. It is then siphoned into your second bottle which has a spigot. This container is where you will fill your beer bottles. Once you have bottled it, you will need to age it for about two to six weeks. Beer is also a great way to share with friends and family your newly created brew. Make labeling a creative part of the process by using fun or personalized names or design labels with colors. Get that creative side moving. What great gifts they will make. There you have it, my short version of how it is done. I suggest you visit Ed, whose expertise will put it in simpler form, and show you how to use the equipment along with every detail you will need to put you on the road to brewing fabulous tasting beers. Stop in and speak to the expert and get more information and everything you need to make your own beer. E.J. Wren Homebrewer, 209 Oswego St. Liverpool, NY (800) 724-6875.

T

he narrow streets and beautiful stucco buildings, leave you in awe. Stop signs do not always mean stop. The number of honks will tell you who goes next. As we approach Carini, I see the Castello di Carini gracing the landscape of the hill. I just had to capture its beauty, so I said, ‘Stop I have to get a picture.” My friends just laugh and pull over. To them it is just another building. To the tourist it is a piece of history. When I decided to go to Italy, I could not make up my mind what to bring and what not to bring. I asked my friends who live there what is protocol and they told me. No sneakers. And wear nice blouses with jeans. They knew that I did not want to look like a tourist, but to blend in. So, I brushed up on my Italian and off I went. Eight hours later, I was in Rome, running to the Alitalia terminal to pick up the second leg of my journey, Palermo, Sicily. An hour later, I was there with my friends to greet me. Tired from the long trip, we were off to their house. I made sure I grabbed my second wind. I didn’t want to miss a thing as we drove to Carini, a province of Palermo. We drove to down to the Castello di Carini to take a tour. My friend told me the legend is the baroness Laura Lanza, during the late 1500s was having an affair, and was caught. Her father, Don Cesare Lanza had to protect the family honor, so one December night, he killed her. It has been said that, from time to time, you can see her bloody hand print on the wall which is a reminder of her pure love story that her family did not accept. The view of the Mediterranean from the Castello is breathtaking and the imposing mountains stand tall, gracing the landscape. The rest of our day was spent at the town piazza and seeing the sights of Carini. The next morning I woke to a glass of the best orange juice I have ever tasted. My friend squeezed the darkest, most delicious juice, something I have not tasted in the U.S. (and I lived in Florida). That evening we went to her parent’s house for a traditional Sicilian dinner, where her dad said tomorrow we will go see Santa Rosalia. I asked, “What is Santa Rosalia?” His response, “a beautiful church in a cave.”

16

WOUNY.COM • OCTOBER 2014

Late the next afternoon, we started up the winding roads of Mount Pellegrino going up and up until we were above the clouds. Finally, we came to Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of Palermo. It is said that angels came to Rosalia, a devoutly religious person from a noble family. They led her to the cave on Mt. Pellegrino where she lived her life as a hermit, devoting herself to god. Also, when Palermo was haunted by plagues in the sixteen hundreds, some of the townspeople said that Rosalia appeared before them. She told one man to climb to the cave and bring her bones to the town and that he should circle the town with them three times. He did what he was told, and the plague was gone. Today she is considered the Patron Saint of Palermo. While we were in Palermo, we stopped at my friend Antonio’s restaurant, called Times Square. The entire family was there, mom and dad, sister, children and friends. There were about fifteen of us ready to enjoy some of Antonio’s favorite dishes, traditional and specialty pizzas, along with the largest platters I have ever seen loaded with many finger foods. Deep friend mashed potato balls, zucchini, chicken and more. I was in food heaven. What is even more exciting is that this fall he is coming to America and opening a restaurant called Saphori, by Antonio, bringing the taste and flavors of Sicily to Upstate New York. The last three days of my trip consisted of visiting beautiful churches, Spanish castles, going to the hot springs and the Catacombe dei Cappuccini. Although it was a bit unsettling, it was interesting to say the least. We went down into the catacomb where there were skeletons that lie in coffins, are hanging or have been placed in alcoves. Some are priests, statesman, ordinary people and one little girl, Rosalia Lombardo who died in 1920. What was so different about her is that to date her body has remained intact and looks as if she had passed days earlier. The doctor who embalmed her passed away so no one knew what he did to preserve her until scientist figured it out. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of my trip, and want to see the rest of Sicily and all of its splendor. I had never felt more at peace, than being there.

With three sisters and a brother living in the area, she has for decades made Cazenovia her part-time home away from Hollywood. I had a huge head and red hair.” In spite of her initial feelings of awkwardness, Siobhan managed to forge ahead in an art that is often heavily focused on appearance. “My parents would say, ‘You’re pretty’ and ‘You can do it, you’re just as good.’ I think my parents gave me a lot of confidence,” she said. “You just have to stay on course and filter the negative out.”

By her senior year of college, Siobhan was preparing to become an educator, when her path suddenly changed. “I was going to be a teacher,” she explained, “And I said, wait a minute, I don’t want to be a teacher, I want to be an actress.” As the story goes, Siobhan’s great uncle became friends with Jackie Gleason and her aunt became friends with Jackie Gleason’s daughter, actress Linda Miller.

“I said wait a minute, I don’t want to be a teacher, I want to be an actress.” “So I called my aunt and asked her what would Linda do, and she said, ‘Go to Catholic University.’ So I did and got my graduate degree in fine arts down in Washington,” Siobhan said.

experience performing in summer theater in Maine and Vermont, in addition to improv training, which would later prove invaluable in her work on Saturday Night Live (1991-1992).

After graduation, Siobhan went to New York City, where she worked a variety of odd jobs before landing bigger roles. But her journey wasn’t always easy.

also had the chance to collaborate with many other talented Hollywood stars. “One of the great perks is that you get to travel to great places,” Siobhan said. “I just finished Wayward Pines in Vancouver, which will be coming out next year.” The television series is based on the best-selling novel Pines by author Blake Crouch. With the imaginative influence of M. Night Shyamalan behind it, the mysterious thriller is about a Secret Service agent who goes searching for two missing federal agents. It also stars Matt Dillon, Carla Gugino and Terrence Howard.

“In the beginning, it was really hard,” she said. “At age 23, people were walking out of college with jobs that paid $50,000 a year and I was scraping by. When I was 29, I told my sister, ‘When I turn 30, and I only have a Masters [degree] and a lamp, you have to make me quit this. When I turned 30, she called me up and said, ‘What have you got?’ I’ve got a bed, lamp and a dresser... Those early years were really tough.” No matter how challenging it was though, Siobhan still clung to her passion to pursue acting.

“It is sort of weird because each project, for a short period of time, the people are sort of your family,” Siobhan said. “Work, for me, isn’t work - it’s like a vacation.”

There aren’t many women in Upstate New York who have achieved such high-profile success in the entertainment business. And for Siobhan, there’s no chance she will ever retire from doing what she loves. As long as there are acting jobs to be had, she intends to bring laughter and joy to her audience for many years to come.

IN FOOD

with Ginny Stewart Gordon

Ginny, the owner of The Brick House Café in Driver’s Village will feature each month a favorite recipe for you to add to your recipe book. From time to time she will feature other local ladies’ favorite foods. Let us know what recipes you would like to have, email us at editor@womenofupstateny.com.

A Note From Ginny

Wild Rice & Quinoa

This recipe was inspired by my daughter, who is gluten intolerant and by our efforts to eat healthier. We moved to a farm last year, so that we could grow more of our own heirloom vegetables. We wanted to know where and how our food was being grown. We are harvesting lots of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, broccoli, pumpkins, squash and weeds! This recipe works great as rice with an entrée one night and as the main course the next. It saves time and is delicious, just make sure you make enough rice for two meals. I like Lundberg wild rice, it’s gluten free, non-GMO and has black rice in it which is loaded with nutrients. I also add organic quinoa, perfect when using this dish as the entrée because it has protein. Enjoy and get cooking! Ginny Stewart Gordon

RECIPE

3¾ C. water • 1 C. rice • 2 Tbl. Coconut oil (or butter or olive oil) • Simmer 30 minutes Add 1 cup organic quinoa • Simmer for 15 minutes longer • The water should all be absorbed, the time will vary depending on how rapidly the water boils • Leave lid on 10 minutes, then fluff with fork • I double this so I have enough for two dinners • You can add herbs if your family likes more flavor. The Vegetables: Chop 1 cup celery, onions, zucchini, carrots, a clove of garlic • Sauté in frying pan with 2 tbls. of olive oil until fork tender • Add butter and lemon if you have more squash • Next, add 2 cups of chopped tomatoes, basil salt and pepper to taste • Finally add a 15 oz. can of drained black beans if desired and cook until hot • If I don’t have fresh tomatoes, diced fire roasted tomatoes are perfect • Top with cheese if you like, some Parmesan, Asiago or Romano.

I N ART

Upstate New York’s Artist

Audrey Levinson featuring Izzy Dugan

O

ur highlighted artist this month is Izzy Dugan. Izzy has a magical way of expressing what she loves about life, the human form in nature. Her paintings hold creative illustrations of a place and a time that is reminiscent of creatures that we hear of in childhood (and never want to find under our bed or in the closet). However, Izzy’s creatures are figuratively realistic. No matter what personality her character has, she uses the body to show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all human form is beautiful to her. Her paintings remind me of the work of painter Lucian Freud, who uses

We had a brief but pleasant conversation. I asked her if she had pictures of her art work as the conversation rolled from teaching art to creating our own art that day. She showed me pictures of her paintings that she held tightly against her chest in a portfolio. I was impressed with her talent and ability to interpret the human form in a way that held no limits. Pure character I thought. She paints with a whimsical imagination. She wanted to teach art at a college level but as fate would have it she ended up teaching art at Fowler High School in Syracuse. She loves teaching at the high school level. I can understand the thrill of molding young artists at this age. It is a time in one’s life when a child becomes an adult and all the energy of youth is on their side. It’s so exciting to see a person at the brink of what drives one to follow their dream. Izzy paints full size figures, mostly women painted on very large canvas, an average of 32” X 48”. She fills the canvas space with the weight of her subject. They are captured, it seems, in private moments of their imaginary lives.

nude models that are obese. However, like Izzy’s figurative paintings color, value, and skin tone acquire a landscape-ish quality. For Lucian Freud that seems to be the attempt. Izzy’s paintings also have fantasy backdrops that tell us more about the figure the viewer is gazing at. I met her fifteen years ago when she began teaching art at a school where I left off.

She shows the viewer their vulnerability as a character from exhausted to spry. She has created images that could only be from her mind’s fairytales. Her subjects are often ogres or ogresses, mermaids and fairies, but not of shapes that are typically “Disney.” They seem to have real lives full of the luxuries that these creatures have taken full advantage of. Their surroundings are textured and earthy. You feel as if you are spying on them in their natural habitat. Izzy said she loves the fall season and its palate.

This is undoubtedly a trademark of living in Upstate New York. She said, “My favorite season is fall, with the gorgeous fall colors of our Northeast. The brisk breeze blowing little hurricanes of color across the road is absolutely magical to me.” She is able to express that image in many of her paintings. For her, the human body is the most beautiful thing to paint. She holds her passion in her point of view, literally. Izzy’s work reminds also me of the Rubenesque period in the history of art. This was a time in history when women of high class, wealth, and health were depicted as what we would consider today, obese. People of that time worked on becoming overweight. It was a status symbol. Imagine that! Izzy Dugan grew up outside of Binghamton, NY. She attended Binghamton State University and received her MFA from Marywood University in Scranton, PA. She is married to a man whom she says “respects her for her art” and she loves him because he gives her the freedom to be the most creative force that she can be. Her inspirations come from the Spectrum Fantasy Art annual competition books. She dabbles in the SCA, a Renaissance recreation group. You can see her paintings in Shoppingtown Mall in DeWitt, NY at a storefront called CNY Artists and online at cnyartists.org. If you would like to comment or to be an Artist of the Month email me at artteach2020@gmail.com.

T

he thought of breast cancer is very scary. As women, the chance of being diagnosed in our lifetime is 1 in 8. We wonder if what we eat can make a difference. Research from all over the world has found that our habits can make a major difference. In fact, 20-40% of cancers are preventable with lifestyle changes. But we need credible science-based research to guide us. Fear and worry will not help you make better decisions - knowledge will. According to Walter Willet, MD, Director of the Harvard School of Public Health the most important thing you can do to protect yourself is to lose weight. As women gain weight they increase their risk of breast cancer. According to the research, extra pounds promote post-menopausal breast cancer. Even 5-10 pounds of extra weight can increase your risk. After menopause, our ovaries stop producing estrogen. Most of the estrogen in our bodies is in our fat cells. The more fat cells, the higher our blood levels of estrogen. Increased weight can also increase insulin levels, which may further fuel the cancer cells. If you find yourself gaining weight every year, now is the time to take a look in the mirror. Stopping the gain will decrease your risk. Losing weight should not be taken on as a “low carb crash,” but rather a new outlook on feeding ourselves with delicious foods, while bolstering our health at the same time. Don’t let Internet messages or the latest diet theory scare you away from sensible habits.

30

WOUNY.COM • OCTOBER 2014

Sensible weight loss. Think about eating fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, healthy fats, nuts, seeds and smaller portions. Although a recent small clinical trial showed great success with a lower carbohydrate diet, it focused on whole foods. It was not a high fat diet with gravy and bacon. Shift away from big bagels, donuts, sugary drinks, French fries, desserts and candy. Eat three to four well balanced meals a day. Use smaller plates and bowls to decrease your portion sizes. Drink water when you are thirsty. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Several studies have found that eating more fruits and vegetables will decrease your risk. According to Karen Collins, MS, RD from the American Institute of Cancer Research, “Plant foods probably offer protection in a number of ways. They provide thousands of phytochemicals, which are natural plant compounds. Many are antioxidants, which seem to protect and repair our DNA. Some antioxidants appear to affect cancer cells, controlling how they grow or spread. The vitamins and minerals in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans also help produce and repair DNA and control cell growth.” The same sensible habits that lower the risk of cancer will also protect us from heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Take steps to improve your health and live well every day. It is never too late to make positive changes. Soy: The media has gone back and forth on whether soy protects us or causes cancer. Research conducted in China, Japan and

Singapore, where women eat a lot of soy, shows that soy is protective against cancer. Because soy contains estrogen-like compounds, there is fear that soy may raise risk of hormone-related cancers. According to Marji McCullough, ScD, RD with the American Cancer Society (ACS), “If you enjoy eating soy foods, the evidence indicates that this is safe, and may be beneficial. However, avoid supplements with isolated soy compounds and if you are taking anti-estrogen medications -- like tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors – avoid all soy products.” Meat or Saturated Fat: Some studies have reported a higher risk of breast cancer in women who consume more red meat and saturated fat. According to Willet, “The effect of saturated fat during midlife or later is weak, if it’s there at all.” He adds, “However, a meat–heavy diet may boost risk especially if eaten in early adulthood.” Collins suggests keeping red meat consumption to below 18 ounces per week. Alcohol: Alcohol is related to both premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer risk and the more you drink, the higher your risk. According to the ACS website, “Compared with non-drinkers, women who consume 1 alcoholic drink a day have a very small increase in risk. Those who have 2 to 5 drinks daily have about 1½ times the risk of women who don’t drink alcohol. Linda Quinn is a Master’s Level Dietitian and a Certified Stott and TRX Instructor. The facts behind

BRCA2 BREAST CANCER By Mary McCandless

T

he BRCA2 gene is one form of cancer that can be hereditary. It is important to know what makes up this gene and what you and your family should know about its traits. I had the opportunity to speak with Bonnie R. Braddock, MPH, Certified Genetic Counselor at Upstate Medical University, to help us better understand this type of cancer. Q. What exactly is BRCA2? A. It is one of the more common hereditary breast cancer risk genes. There are several hereditary breast cancer risk genes that are known, so the BRCA2 is one of them. We know that BRCA2 is associated with significant increased hybrids for breast cancer in woman and is also associated with increased risks for other cancers as well. There is a range of types of breast cancers and how well women do who have this gene is more dependent on an individual who has this particular diagnosis.

gene. Everybody has the gene, it is when there is a mutation or significant change within that gene, that is a risk factor. So if someone carries the mutation then each child male or female is at 50% chance that they inherited the gene mutation copy. We have two copies of every kind of gene that we have. Q. Can it skip a generation? A. The gene mutation cannot skip a generation. But you can see families where there are breast cancers of different relatives but it may not all be due to the same reason. Q. What does testing entail? A. Genetic testing is generally through a blood test or sometimes a mouth swab. There are different options for the specific

A. The majority of breast cancers are not hereditary. Only about 5-10% of all women with breast cancer carry a hereditary gene.

Q. Is it carried by one gender side of the family or could both be carriers? A. The gene mutations can be carried by men or women and passed down to men or women. That is what we call a dominant

32

WOUNY.COM • OCTOBER 2014

Q. Are there people who tested positive and did not get breast cancer or their sibling who tested negative got breast cancer? A. The majority of the breast cancer genes are not at 100% risks, they are increased risks. The level of the risks depends upon what genes we are talking about. Since they are not a 100%, there clearly are individuals out there that carry the gene but may never get the disease, but can pass the gene onto their child, but as an adult they may get the disease. As you know breast cancer is the most common cancer in women so by chance alone women can get breast cancer. Any woman is at risk for breast cancer. Q. If you have BRCA2 cancer are there other cancer risks?

Q. Is BRCA2 hereditary?

It really does make sense for everybody to know their family history, because there are certain types of family histories that are more suspicious of hereditary risks. For example, women who have had breast cancers diagnosed at younger ages, multiple relatives with breast cancer from the same side of the family or if there is a relative with ovarian cancer. There are certain types of family history that make one more suspicious.

the appropriate testing options and different possibilities for what the results could mean. Then they would know ahead of time what cancer risks are associated with particular genes. Once the results come back the genetic counselor would have a follow up discussion of what those risks are and that information should be used with that individual and their physician on how to manage that risk.

Bonnie R. Braddock, MPH, Certified Genetic Counselor,Upstate Medical University types of genetic tests that are available. People can have tests for specific genes or multiple genes. It does help to really know the family history, number one to get a sense of how likely it is that there is a hereditary form of cancer in the family and two what gene or genes could be involved and what strategy of testing might be most appropriate for a particular family. Q. If tests come back positive, what’s next? A. Genetic counseling would go through

A. Yes, women with the BRCA2 gene mutation are also at significant increased risk for ovarian cancer. They should be talking to their gynecologist about what their options are for dealing with that risk. This is important information for men as well. Men are at increased risk for male breast cancer and prostate cancer. For both men and women who carry the BRCA2 gene mutation, in some families there is an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. We are always encouraging people to talk with their relatives and know their family histories, review their family history with their physician, especially if there is a cancer history. It is important to know who could be at increased risk, and to know what to offer,

and better surveillance for those high risk individuals, in some cases genetic testing. Many males have come to meet with us for genetic counseling who are concerned about their own risks, risks to their children and their relatives. These are very difficult issues to talk about with their families.

members of their families and relatives that they know of that have either tested positive for the BRCA2 gene, had cancer and are survivors, or have died from breast cancer. For some of the family members who have tested positive, some have opted to take precautionary measures and have either had a mastectomy or oophorectomy, which is the surgical removal of one or both of their ovaries. The family also has two male relatives that have had breast cancer. The family tree for this family, not only includes great grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers and sisters, but also cousins, aunts, uncles and children.

After speaking with Bonnie Braddock, I had the opportunity to meet with four sisters whose family has experienced first hand the effects of the BRCA2 gene and breast cancer. Lynette Prosonic Hall and her sisters, Michelle, Stephanie, and Sharon tell me how breast cancer goes back several generations. They can trace it back to their great-grandmother, grandmother and their mother who passed from breast cancer. The girls were young at the time of their mom’s death, but their father was adamant that they get checked all the time, right up to their adulthood. The ladies said that their father was a man of few words, but he made sure the girls did not forget to get checked. On both their mother’s side and father’s side there is breast cancer.

Sharon Jarvis

You have read a brief history of this one family and have learned about the BRCA2 gene. This is only the tip of the iceberg. If you have a family history of breast cancer, it is important to learn as much as you can, and get checked. October is breast cancer awareness month and a great time to also support the Carol M. Team Red, White & Blue Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB) is a non-profit veteran support organization that enriches the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity. Team RWB has active groups in Upstate New York in Albany, Buffalo, Fort Drum/Watertown, Ithaca, Rochester, and Syracuse. Veterans and civilians alike are welcomed as members of Team RWB, and no physical fitness background is necessary. To learn more, please visit www.teamrwb.org.

Roger Robinson will join his wife Kathrine Switzer as special guests at this year’s Empire State Marathon. A running celebrity in his own right, He ran at elite competitive level for more than 30 years, representing England and New Zealand in crosscountry and marathon, and being ranked world Number 1 as a master. His 2:18:45 marathon best was at age 41. He set the Boston over-40 record (2:20:15) and New York City over-50 record (2:28:01). Roger is internationally acclaimed as a writer on running, author of five books and a TV script, and senior writer for Running Times.

Kathrine Switzer, one of Syracuse’s most iconic athletes, returns to the scene of where it all began when she attends the Empire State Marathon here as a special guest on October 17-19.

He still runs most days, and despite a knee replacement has been winning the over-70 in 5K road races (recent PR 23:55). So far, he has listened to his surgeon’s advice not to attempt another marathon.

Switzer will be a speaker at the premarathon pasta party on Saturday evening. She will also be launching a new line of 261 Fearless running clothes at the event expo. Katherine will be a speaker with her husband, author and runner Roger Robinson who will be launching the film Spirit of the Marathon II and the companion book to the film, which he authored. Both will be available throughout the race weekend to meet and greet the public.

Fashion Show

Interestingly, Switzer’s old Boston bib numbe’261’ has very recently come to symbolize ‘fearlessness’. And, at the Empire State Marathon Expo, where Kathrine will be signing and selling her memoir Marathon Woman, she will also be launching a new line of sportswear called, “261 Fearless”, sold under the popular Skirt Sports, Inc. brand (www.skirtsports. com/261running). At the expo on Friday and Saturday, a fashion show of 261 Fearless running clothes will take place.
