Once upon a time... By Molly Lizzio, MA, LPMFT
“O
nce upon a time…” words women know all too well. It starts off with fairytales as small girls, and then books, TV shows, and movies follow right along. We’re taught from an early age that the point of any story is to find that one special person and fall in love. To live happily every after.
When it comes to reality, the majority of us spend our lives in the unseen bits. The part cut off by the end credits. We all know that “happily ever after” doesn’t always end up so “happy” after all. We don’t see a lot of movies that are focused around low sex drives, fights over the dishes, or differing core parenting beliefs. And yet these are the issues I deal with every day in my work with couples. But if absolutely everyone, who is together for a significant time, exists in these humdrum periods of lackluster reality, why does it make everyone feel so alone, sad, and bored. I can’t help but wonder if we haven’t been properly set up for “ever after.” The truth is most people aren’t really that interested in what happens in “ever after.” We can see this in TV shows, when there are two characters everyone wants to end up together. Articles are written about it, the water cooler is buzzing the next day with the “will they or won’t they” speculations. Hollywood writers are no fools, they tend to drag this out as long as they think it will be tolerated, and finally they give us something so spectacular that it becomes iconic in society.
Recently I’ve been wondering what that phrase, “happily ever after,” even means. I believe we don’t have a clear idea because that’s where the story always ends. The couple end up together and they ride off into the sunset. Over and over this is the story, it ends at the very beginning of their relationship.
When Ross came to the Central Perk doors, and he and Rachel have their first kiss, it’s pouring rain and U2 is blasting in the background. We eat it up. And at first we love and adored their relationship, but after a while, viewer interest starts to wane. This is when the characters get pulled apart in some heartbreaking fashion; and somehow before the series ends, they are thrown back together haphazardly to please fans. But, to me, it always feels rushed, disingenuous, and an afterthought. If we’re getting bored with a TV couple after one or two seasons, how does this translate into our real lives? I’ve heard it said that every five or seven years married people often contemplate divorce. This makes sense to me, as I believe everything in life moves on a cycle of some sort.
...happily ever after. With every passing decade we see more and more couples getting married for romance as opposed to necessity. But those saying “I do” to a lifetime together have to realize that who they are, and how they love, is likely to change over the course of forever. What those hopefuls don’t always realize is there are days, months, even years at a time when love between themselves and their partners may be lost. There is a stamina that is required of partnership that is among the hardest work we’ll ever do. Fairytales and Hollywood are full of stories about falling in love, but what we need more of is stories about staying in love. Another trend I almost always see in movies is that the bump in the road for the couple is initiated because the woman gets so fed up with something or so hurt that she finally pulls away from the partnership and the man gets to come in on a white horse and fix everything. With his grand gestures and enlightened new ways. A subliminal message gets sent that women need to come to the absolute brink in order for change to occur, and a man gets to be a hero for listening to, and making his partner’s concerns a priority. It’s no wonder couples have the same fight for 15 years. This perpetuates the idea that men are
these stupid creatures and they need coaching. Men aren’t dumb, they often see things through a different lens, but they are capable of being held to very high expectations. The high expectations we need to hold ourselves to as well. For people starting off a new relationship it’s important to set boundaries,
expectations, and non-negotiables right out of the gate, and never stop having this conversation. For people neck deep in partnership you need to start having these conversations and make your actions match your words. So often I hear people hesitant to have these tough conversations because it feels like rocking the boat. Here’s the problem with this logic, we live cautious lives in order to not rock the boat and then complain about our boring, unromantic lives.
the next level, to gain understanding or true acceptance. If given the choice between a man who brings me home flowers on occasion or one who will do the dishes, I’m going to take the man who does the dishes. Not just because I really hate to do dishes, but that simple act is a quiet reminder that he really knows me. Whether it’s that you want to help with the division of labor in the home, to have your feelings listened to and responded to, or equality in financial or business matters, that is what real life romance looks like — when our partners genuinely show they care not only about us, but also about the state of our relationship. It may be hard to find a love song about it, but it will certainly become the music that keeps us dancing together for “ever after.” For more information, contact Molly Lizzio, MA, LPMFT of Harvest House Marriage and Family Therapy at: www. harvesthousecounseling.com.

Barbara Conte-Gaugel: ‘Maker of Things’
B
arbara Conte-Gaugel describes herself as a maker of things. When I visited her studio at the Delvan Center, the first thing I noticed were artifacts from every era. Items like an old clock face, a small silver doll hand, a glass chandelier bulb that would cast a prism in the sun, old photographs of family, skeleton keys, an old rusted hook and many other items that were fascinating from the past. Pieces of the past from homes and families long discarded that ended up in a large dentist’s cabinet with lots of little drawers. I wanted to spend hours fishing through all those drawers. I could feel my inner child become excited at the treasures I might find. In Barbara’s case that is what they are, artifacts, facts of art. She had two walls that were decorated with her artwork. They were distinctly different. One wall was all about the past — a creative collection of collaged collectibles in shadow boxes. The composition of each piece very modern, like three dimensional pattern design. She uses those elements of the past to create
By Audrey Levinson the theme for each piece of artwork. It reminded me of the work of famous artist Joseph Cornell, one of the first artists to bring this technique to the art world. Barbara does this with just as much finesse as the surrealists’ playful, three-dimensional objects. The other wall is filled with her current passion for painting. Her paintings tell the story of who she is and where she has been. Barbara grew up in Rochester, New York but now resides in Syracuse. She told me she always felt like a maker of things from the time she was very young. It is common that, even as a child, a true artist feels that passion begin to churn within the imagination and can’t help but make something out of nothing. At this time in her life, she has put her “ADHD” to rest, as she put it with a chuckle, and has focused on painting. We talked feverishly about how she came to her decree “For Myself, By Myself.” Barbara attended classes at night, at first while she was a librarian for the Syracuse City School District.
from something two-dimensional. She took his advice gingerly at first. Then one Christmas, as a gift from her husband, they flew to Provence, France in September and she understood, as she painted the breathtaking view of the lavender fields surrounding the cottage, the value of her instructor’s advice. Barbara went on to tell me that years ago she befriended an old man who was a painter. He critiqued her every painting with a sour eye and soon she lost confidence in her ability to paint. A sad story, but it cast a squelching spell on her. While in France, her husband told her she was creating beautiful en plein air paintings. And there with paint brush in hand, because of her husband’s enthusiasm for her, the spell was broken. She found her confidence again. Artists can go through so many struggles in their life creatively. It’s a hilly ride, but in the end there are always lessons learned, redirection to new paths, and a confidence that lives within that only needs to be rediscovered again.
Then she decided she needed to be true to herself and focus solely on her artistic calling. While attending school, she had an instructor who told her she needed to paint. She had never done so, and went to a friend who showed her what to do with paint and brush. She fell in love with it. Her paintings are either done from a still life or en plein air. All from real life, and not a photograph. She stands strong on this. She explained, another instructor told her she should never paint from a photograph, it doesn’t work to create a painting of something three-dimensional WOUNY.COM • JAN | FEB 2015

Inspiring people through laughter

n March 8, Zonta International will honor Yvonne Conte, author, comedian, motivational speaker and CEO of the Humor Advantage with the 2015 Crystal Award. The Syracuse Zonta Foundation gives this award to one woman in Onondaga County who they feel has improved the status of women and girls. “I feel great about this award in particular because it tells me that we are making a dent here in Syracuse, improving the lives of women in our area,” Yvonne said. “For them to notice, we must be doing something right.” Women of Upstate New York Magazine recently had the pleasure of speaking with Yvonne as she currently enjoys working from her winter home in Ft. Meyers, Florida. She shares how she began her journey of lifting people’s spirits, while energizing them to pass that same message on. “I had lost my job and turned to stand up comedy. I decided to try it and I loved it. Then someone asked me speak to business people

about humor. I spoke to a group in Rochester and my phone was ringing off the hook the next day. The company took off like a rocket and the phone hasn’t stopped ringing since. But, really, how my life has lead me to where I am today is deeply rooted in my Italian American family. I grew up in a wonderful loving family, but my sisters, mother and father had health issues. So, I grew up feeling like no one noticed me. The only thing I could do to stand out was to act funny and I was pretty much the only funny one in my family. I would stick out my tongue, cross my eyes, wet my hair down, melt crayons on the radiator, anything funny or outrageous to try to get the attention of my mom,” she said. “As a kid, you don’t realize the sacrifices your parents make. My mother was a gorgeous woman who gave up a promising singing career to marry my dad and to take care of us. She was an amazing women, always dressed in beautiful clothes with her hair done perfectly... But as a kid, it was like, ‘Hey what about me?’ That’s the foundation for my humor and how I got started.”
Yvonne gives approximately 60 keynote addresses a year and has worked with hundreds of organizations, including Merck, Xerox, Time Warner, Lucent Technology, Yvonne Conte North Syracuse School District and Syracuse University, to name just a few. Her books include “Cry, Laugh, Cook,” “Bits of Joy” and “Serious Laughter.” Yvonne explained that she has begun a new chapter in her career, as she transitions to working in Florida during the winter. “I have never had to advertise at all in New York, but in Florida no one knows me… yet! It is like I’m starting over in a way, attracting business and getting the word out. I love it here though.” As CEO of her company Humor Advantage, Yvonne has a speaker bureau of many comedi-
ans, musicians and motivational speakers that talk on a variety of subjects in a range speaking fees. “I have also been trying to grow that side of the business as most people right now call me just for me. I would like to have it be where people call me for any kind of speaker in any type of price range,” she said. “I have speakers that talk about motivation, customer service and technology. I also have a great new speaker who is an expert on bullying, transgender children, gay/lesbian issues and other very timely issues. I’m looking to share this information.” Sharing her information and stories is part of what Yvonne enjoys most. However, her bestseller “Cry, Laugh, Cook” was one book that she originally did not set out to write. But once it was written, it changed her life in a most amazing way. “I didn’t want to write the book,” Yvonne said. “But my publicist wanted me to do it because he said that cookbooks are a gold mine and I’m an Italian girl and everyone always wants my recipes. They assume I’m a great cook. And I am a great cook, but I always share my recipes, I’ve always done that. My publicist suggested that I write about family and tie in the recipes. So, I did and two weeks after my book was published, I got an email from a man in Switzerland saying that he was part of my family. I deleted the email knowing that I
did not know anyone in Switzerland. He continued to email me and told me that he was originally from a small town in Calabria, Italy, the same town that my family had come from. He then told me that before his father died, he left him a box of pictures of family members in America and to look for them because they were wonderful people. He looked for 10 years but could never find us because Conte is such a common name. Then one day he Googled Conte and the name of the town, Amaroni and my book was the first thing that came up. He sent me some of the pictures that were in the box and the first one he sent was a photo of my mother and family. Since that time we have visited both here and in Italy. My little book opened my life to family members and family history that I never knew. I feel like it could be a movie! It’s definitely a story I may write some day.” The Light and the Dark Although an expert on storytelling and showing others how to the find humor in life, Yvonne is keenly aware that many people experience sadness on a daily basis. Some of these people may be the most outwardly funny people you know. She revealed that she too has had bouts of depression in her life and takes special pleasure in the happiness of people around her in Florida.
“So many elderly people are depressed because they don’t get out of the house. The old people in Florida don’t act old. They are so active… they swim, they are outside. They are happy because they get out of their houses and talk with people. I am so much more active here myself, and it improves my mood. Yvonne speaks from the heart when offering the following suggestions for dealing with sadness. “First, recognize what you are doing that is putting you in the mood you are in. This involves some reflective thinking,” she said. “Second, cultivate a small circle of friends that understand what you are going through. I have a small core group of friends that respect my depression. They love me and understand me. If you disregard or disrespect a person’s depression you may as well stab them. You can’t help them until you acknowledge it. That’s how destructive it is. You might say, ‘Let’s go do something fun today... let’s go see a movie or go for a walk.’ The difference between me and someone like Robin Williams is he did not have that group of people who could understand how a comedian like him could be so sad and lonely. Next, a great tool to keep is a journal. Through writing down your feelings you can look for triggers and patterns of behavior may start to emerge. It’s good to have that recorded. Also, try something new, take a class, go to a new restaurant, anything WOUNY.COM • JAN | FEB 2015

that gives me something to look forward to, helps. Sleep is also key for giving your body the chance to rest and recharge. If you don’t sleep well the next day you ache. Meditation, music and over-the-counter sleep aids are all helpful with this. Just make sure they aren’t laxatives. Last, and most importantly, if you are feeling suicidal, you must contact a doctor. It’s very difficult because it’s so hard to talk about and there is still a stigma with mental health issues, but it is essential to reach out to friends and medical personnel during this critical time, if for nothing else than to have someone to talk with.” After the loss of Robin Williams, Yvonne wrote an essay titled, “The Depressed Comedian: Oxymoron.” In her essay, Yvonne makes the link between sadness and laughter and calls on people to respond with understanding and compassion. “It is the people who make you laugh the longest and hardest who seem to enjoy life the least. It is that eccentric wit they have that is the link between psychological disorders and the ability to create amazing comedy. Depression, loneliness, hopelessness are murderers. Suicide is merely the weapon. When you ignore a person’s pain you are handing them the weapon.” Yvonne seeks to increase awareness for mental health issues as she continues to be a leader in spreading joy. Day of Joy Conference Yvonne is proud to be the creator and director of this conference, now in its 5th year. Approximately 1,000 women will gather on April 11, at Believer’s Chapel in Cicero for a full day of enrichment for themselves. Yvonne is one of four national speakers who will address the group assembled. In addition to the speakers, there will be music in the form of a large worship band and more than 40 vendors selling products ranging from essential oils to jewelry and inspirational gift items. Yvonne enthusiastically describes the day, “Though it is technically a Christian conference, it’s for everyone, including those that may be ‘unchurched.’ The beautiful thing about it is that we get people that never go to church. They come because they heard
me speak in the past and thought I was funny and want to hear me speak again. We laugh until we cry,” Yvonne said. “We just have a ball!” The profits this year will go to Vera House and attendees may bring canned goods that will be donated to the North Area Meals On Wheels. Yvonne said that she has just the “greatest group of people around me, wonderful friends and amazing business associates.” She shared a story regarding a longtime business fixture on Syracuse’s North side. “We try to keep the conference cost down for women that are attending so I try to get food donations. I remembered that my Dad, who was also a business man, used to speak highly of Syracuse Banana Co. and I remembered the owner Frank Inserra fondly. I went in there to see if they would possibly donate, figuring that Frank had passed on and that it was probably owned by someone else. Sure enough, the receptionist said that Frank had passed away but his son Steve now owned the company. I was sure Steve would not remember me and told her to tell him I was Frank Conte’s daughter. He came bolting out of his office, gave me a big hug and told me that for Frank’s daughter I could have anything I wanted. Syracuse Banana donates all the fruit for our day. After this conversation, I went out to my car and cried because it just spoke volumes about the integrity of my dad. God bless my father, that 20 years after his death a kid that knew him when he was a teenager remembers what a good man he was. I want my grandchildren to someday have the same experience about me. I want people to know that when I say something they can count on it. Everything I do, I think… ‘What can I glean from this experience?’ From this one in particular, I realize that it’s not always about the here and now but it’s about the legacy that you leave for the people who come after you.”
Yvonne Conte spreads joy through comedy.

A strong legacy is certainly in the making as the little Italian girl with a big message continues to share her inspiring, relatable brand of strength, courage and…. humor! Summing it all up well, Yvonne said, “If we build strong women, we build a stronger community.”

5 Things
Every Woman Should Carry in Her Purse By Michael Aaron Gallagher
A
wise man once said, “If you aren’t prepared 100% of the time, you aren’t prepared.” Based on the contents of many urban EDC (every day carry) bags, I have compiled a list of five essential products that every woman should have with her at all times. 1. LED Flashlight. If you find yourself fumbling around in the dark, looking for something you’ve dropped under the seat of your car or wishing you could see better as you walk along a dimly lit path, there’s one product you shouldn’t leave the house without. LED lighting technology has made carrying a small flashlight easier and cheaper than ever before. Best of all, they are brighter and use less battery power, which means they will last for hours longer. There’s no reason to be afraid of the dark. Companies like ThruNite (www.thrunite. com) offer flashlights that operate on standard AA or AAA batteries. 2. Pepper Spray. Are you looking for a non-lethal way to protect yourself ? More and more women are turning to pepper spray products as an EDC item. I am particularly impressed with the Ruger pepper spray models, which come in a variety of colors and designs. The Ultra system even has its own built-in alarm and strobe light that activates when the device is used. But whether you choose a discrete lipstick model, one with finger grips or one with an arm band for jogging, you never know when it may save your life or the life of someone else. To order Ruger pepper spray visit Walmart.com and other online retailers.

3. Custom First Aid Kit. Since it isn’t always practical to carry around bottles of medicine with you, the gas station is a great place to find individual packets of over-the-counter medicines for your custom first aid kit. From Tylenol (for headaches) and aspirin (for heart attacks) to allergy medicines (for allergic reactions) and pills for stomach relief (for food poisoning), collect a few packets of each and use a small pouch to organize your band-aids and essential items. Not only is it more convenient to have medicine with you when you need it, but you never know when you might be able to make someone else feel better too. 4. Cellphone Battery Backup. We live in an age of personal electronic devices. If you’ve ever been using your GPS to navigate with Google Maps or were in the middle of watching a YouTube video and realized you were running out of battery power, you might want to consider having a backup battery with you for emergencies. One of the coolest products on the market is the Mophie battery case (www.mophie.com), which fits over your phone and extends your battery life. Depending on your device, there are also portable battery backups with stylish Kate Spade graphic patterns (available at www.BestBuy.com) and external battery backup devices, which have multiple outlets, to enable you to charge more than one device. 5. Personal Alarm. Having a personal alarm with you can come in handy, whether you use it to startle a potential attacker or as an emergency whistle to draw attention to yourself if you are ever lost or injured in an accident. Depending on the model you choose, you can simply pull out the pin or push a button to activate the alarm. They also come in a variety of designs as well. I particularly like the alarms from Vigilant Personal Protection Systems. Most of their alarms operate as loud as 130 decibels. To order online, visit www.vigilantpps.com.

Meringue Hearts Recipe
1 1/2 c sugar 2 Tblsp. cornstarch 6 large egg whites (room temperature) 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar Medium speed in mixer beat egg whites until foamy ( about 1 min.) Add cream of tartar, best another minute. Add sugar and cornstarch 1/4 cup at a time and beat until stiff and glossy. Put in pastry bag with medium star tip, or in a plastic gallon bag with a small hole cut in corner. Pipe heart shapes onto parchment lined baking sheet. Fill heart shape in to make a foundation and then go around the outside of the heart twice so you make a heart shaped bowl. Bake at 200 degrees for 2-3 hours, turn oven off and let stand in oven for a few hours, or overnight. Raspberry “pool” and drizzle: Prepared seedless raspberry sauce or seedless raspberry jam melted, or purée raspberries and strain seeds. Fill hearts with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, place a few tablespoons of purée on a dessert plate, put hearts in center of plates and drizzle with raspberry purée. You can change the recipe with the purée, the fruit, and add chocolate drizzle or whipped cream... VERY EASY and wonderful to make ahead, just store hearts in airtight bags. Enjoy! Modern Valentine By Leah Wolf
T
oday, Valentine’s Day is all about romance and love. However, it wasn’t always that way.
Originally, Valentine’s Day started off as Lupercalia, a Roman revelry for fertility. Ladies would line the streets to be hit with goat and dog hides, believing that it would help them become pregnant. Then, women’s names were drawn from a bowl and they would pair off with the men to — well, let’s not go there. However, there is a reason why we now celebrate with cards and chocolates instead of dog pelts. There are two saints named Valentine, or Valentinus. Both were martyred in the name of love. The two Saint Valentines were largely heroic and romantic figures, leading them to be incredibly popular in Europe. The first Saint Valentine was marrying people in secret when the Roman Emperor decided that single men made better soldiers. When he was discovered, Saint Valentine was beheaded. Many years later, the other Saint Valentine was beheaded for helping Christians who were being imprisoned by Romans. When he was thrown in jail, Saint Valentine fell in love with what is assumed to be the jailer’s daughter — talk about star-crossed lovers! The night before he was to be beheaded, he sent a letter to her signed “from your Valentine,” thus establishing the phrase. Both saints were killed on February the 14th. This date also happened to coincide with what was believed to be the beginning of mating season for birds.

Although Lupercalia had been abolished in the 5th century, as a result of being “un-Christian,” Valentine’s Day was not truly established until the Middle Ages. Shakespeare and Chaucer were largely involved in making Valentine’s Day the love fest it is now. The authors greatly romanticized the holiday in their works. Their popularity resulted in a widespread celebration of love on February 14th. Even King Henry V was swept up in the romance, hiring a poet to compose a card to Catherine of Valois. The Industrial Revolution only added to the commercialization of Valentine’s Day. With the invention of factories, cards could be mass-produced. Hallmark got their start in Kansas, and exploded with the sale of Valentine’s cards and other sentiments. Valentine’s cards are a huge market, with 1 Billion sold, second only to Christmas cards. In modern times, Valentine’s Day has become a day for romance and rekindling love. In fact, six million people were proposed to or married on Valentine’s Day last year. That number doesn’t even touch the amount of chocolate that is eaten. It is estimated
that Americans alone purchase 58 million pounds of the stuff in the days before, and worldwide a stunning 3 Billion pounds are bought. Of course, chocolate and jewelry will always be the standby for Valentine’s Day. However, a handmade card is a nice sentiment that is sure to stand out in a sea of mass-produced missives. Other gift ideas may include play or concert tickets, or a favorite book. If you want to give without depleting your wallet, there are plenty of handmade gifts that are fairly easy to make. Coupons have been a huge trend lately. Using pieces of paper, write things like “good for one backrub” or maybe “good for one dinner date” on them to ensure that the romance will continue on throughout the year. Instead of going to an expensive and crowded restaurant, perhaps you and your significant other could have a picnic at home. Good wine, a favorite food, and a few candles scattered around are sure to set a romantic mood. If flowers are more your style, change it up by gifting them in a mason jar. You can paint your “vase,” or glue beads and other items to it to create a unique holder for the Valentine go-to. While the history of Valentine’s Day may be varied, one fact remains; it’s a great excuse to eat chocolate!

ong before hand-held electronic devices and color television, one woman dared to break down barriers and entertain audiences with a powerful blend of physical comedy and quick comedic wit. Decades later, the legacy of I Love Lucy star Lucille Ball (1911-1989), still lives on today. At the Lucy-Desi Center for comedy in Ball’s hometown of Jamestown, New York, visitors can travel back in time to explore television sets, memorabilia and much more. Women of Upstate New York Magazine recently asked Executive Director Journey Gunderson about the center and its annual comedy festival, whose special guest on August 1 will be Jerry Seinfeld (tickets are on sale beginning Feb. 9). Q: For people who don’t know, how did the Lucy-Desi Center for Comedy come about and what makes it so special? A: The Lucy Desi Center for Comedy came about after the Arts Council in Jamestown asked Lucille Ball in the late eighties about the celebration of her legacy. She said that while she understood Jamestown wanted to have a museum attraction, she preferred her legacy be celebrated in the form of living,

breathing comedy – in the form of an annual comedy festival, a focus on the development of the comedic arts, and making Jamestown a destination for the celebration of comedy. The first Lucille Ball Comedy Festival began in 1991 and the museum opened in 1996. The early nineties saw Ellen Degeneres, Paula Poundstone, Ray Romano, Lewis Black and more perform in her honor. In 2015, Jerry Seinfeld will headline the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival in Jamestown, and 2014 saw Jay Leno, Tom Cotter and a total of 25 comedic performers and artists. What makes Jamestown unique is the mix of celebrating comedy and the Lucy-Desi legacy through a nostalgic lens, while presenting the best of contemporary comedy as well. All of this culminates with a larger initiative we’re developing to open as soon as 2016 to embody Ball’s vision for Jamestown: the first National Comedy Center and center for the celebration of the comedic arts. Q: What are some of the interesting items people can see in the museum? A: We have seven Emmy Awards including Ball’s for Best Actress in a Comedy Series,

an opportunity for visitors to re-create the famous “Vitameatavegamin” scene, as well as sets, costumes and props from the most popular and iconic American comedy in television history, I Love Lucy. personal lives and careers of Ball and Arnaz. Q: What are some of the little known facts about Lucy and Desi that people may be surprised to learn? A: People aren’t often aware of the business side of their legacy, or the many ways they were pioneers in entertainment. When CBS offered Ball her own television show version of the radio program My Favorite Husband, she insisted on having real-life husband Desi Arnaz play her husband on the show. Of course in that time period CBS balked and said that no one would embrace them as a couple or even believe he was her husband, so they took the show on the road, performing (and in the process, perfecting) it live, vaudeville-style, to prove their appeal to American audiences. The portrayal of an American woman and a Cuban man, married, on television in 1951 was not an insignificant barrier to break. Also controversial was the portrayal of Ball’s pregnancy on television. Most involved thought they would have to put I Love Lucy on hold when Ball became pregnant, and when Jess Oppenheimer suggested they write it into the script, there was fear they would lose their sponsors. They never used the word “pregnant,” referred to Lucy as “’spectin’” and the episode in which Lucy Ricardo gave birth still holds the Nielsen share record of 98.6% of households watching television tuning in. This significantly eclipsed the next day’s first-ever televised presidential inauguration.
People often don’t know that Desi was a pioneer of the concept of syndication, and that Desilu’s decision to film I Love Lucy on 35 mm film, rather than kinescope, is the reason we can still watch it today (as opposed to nearly all other shows of the time period). I Love Lucy was filmed with a 3-camera technique, unusual for a TV show, and from then on it became the standard. When I speak to groups of students, especially, I like to point out that Ball wasn’t just some lucky actress who hit it big. On the contrary, she worked extremely hard for decades to make her own way in entertainment – appearing in 42 movies before I Love Lucy, building Desilu with Desi, and eventually buying out ownership to become the first female head of a major Hollywood studio. As head of the studio, she demonstrated the creative ability to predict what would have broad appeal to audiences over a long period of time – shows that might be expensive to initially produce, but recoup revenue over years of re-runs and even movie spin-offs – Star Trek being a great example of a project she green-lit.

do I Love Lucy, the kinescope-quality of the episodes by the time they were shipped to the East Coast just wouldn’t cut it for sponsors. Deciding to do the show on film and stay in Hollywood meant a lot of things – including that Lucy and Desi would have to take on the production responsibility of the show. Union laws at the time prevented CBS’s TV and radio employees from working on a show that was filmed in a studio, and Desilu Productions was born. Desilu was the largest studio of its era, and we have it to thank for The Jack Benny Program, The Andy Griffith Show, Mission: Impossible, The Untouchables, Star Trek and more. Ball and Arnaz were absolute entertainment moguls, and played a large part in making Hollywood what it is today. Ball eventually sold the studio and it was renamed Paramount Pictures.
I could go on and on, but for the rest you’ll just have to visit the museum in Jamestown. Q: Can you talk a little bit about Desilu Studios and what went into its creation? A: Most television shows were broadcast live in New York at the time, and when Lucy and Desi wanted to stay in California together and

Q: Are the sets original, or do they feature any original memorabilia? A: The sets are re-creations made for an exhibit that traveled the country in celebration of the 50th anniversary of I Love Lucy. Much to people’s dismay, very little was saved from the show sets, because as popular as the show was at the time, it was still just the entertainment business and I doubt anyone could have imagined the show’s unusual level of popularity more than 60 years later. 8.7 million viewers watched the I Love Lucy Christmas special in 2013, and in 2012 it won a national People magazine and ABC 20/20 poll for “Best TV Comedy of All-Time” and “Best TV Show of All-Time,” beating shows produced and watched right to the present. It’s remarkable. Q: What types of events have been held at the center over the years? A: The annual festival includes more than 50 events in five days, including everything from a lunch at the Center with Wanda Clark – Lucille Ball’s 25-year personal secretary, to “Latenight Comedy” in the Tropicana Room, which is a re-creation of Ricky Ricardo’s night club. We bring more than 25 artists and performers and feature headliners like Jay Leno, Martin Short and Jerry Seinfeld in some of the larger theater venues near the museum. Oh, and we also have hosted two Guinness World Records – Most People Dressed as Lucy Ricardo (917 in 2011) and Most People Grape Stomping (1,232 in 2014). Q: Do you ever have celebrity visitors or guests come through? A: We have an entire exhibit on it. Too many to list. In addition to everyone from the famous comedians to Olympians to people who worked with Lucy and Desi, it’s always a huge draw when Lucie Arnaz, an incredible entertainer, comes to Jamestown to perform. Q: What kind of impact do you think Lucille
Ball has had on showbusiness? A: Lucille Ball got America used to the idea of a woman being funny. While she was a beautiful woman, people tuned in to see her because she was hilarious. It broadened the value the entertainment industry could see in women – from being mainly about looks to the capacity to carry a show as a comedic star. Ball also was generous with her support for younger, emerging artists. Rather than insecurely coveting her status, she reached out and helped other women succeed as she had. Carol Burnett is a good example. Q: Are you surprised by how long Lucy and Desi’s legacy has lasted in the entertainment business? A: Yes and no. Yes, because it’s hard not to be – the relevance and appeal they have today is staggering and just inarguably unusual. No, because when you consider what they produced... you realize there has just been no one else like them. Q: What age group does your museum appeal to the most? A: People are very surprised that we have fans and visitors of all ages. Truly, we have a huge social media following of people in their twenties, comedy lovers and people posting images of their Lucy tattoos, along with, of course, people who walk into the museum and are absolutely overtaken with nostalgia – they recall watching I Love Lucy when it originally aired, and the experience just takes them back to memories of being in their living rooms, laughing with their families and hanging on every moment on-screen, together. Q: Are there any plans to add items, activities or events down the road? A: The National Comedy Center is an enormous initiative we are leading and building. It’s a multi-million dollar national attraction

experience in comedy. It embodies Lucille Ball’s vision for Jamestown. The National Comedy Center celebrates comedy – the craft, and its many contributors. This is the place you can take your kids someday so they know who Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, or now tragically, who Robin Williams was – because these artists’ contributions to American culture are important; they matter. It’s a place to relish in the craft of making people laugh. It’s not just about the artists, but about the art form and comedy’s role in our lives – as a healer, a tool for progress, a skill for communication, so many things. Comedy is for everyone, and a visit to the National Comedy Center as it’s currently designed will be the most fun I can imagine having. Q: What do you hope visitors take away with them? A: I hope visitors take away with them an appreciation for those who have made us laugh, and for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s role in empowering so many to do so. When Lucy first made an audience laugh out loud, she said to herself, “This is what I am meant to be doing.” We’re all better off because she did.

hen it comes to nutrition and diet advice, you have to have a sense of humor. People fall for the lamest miracle pills, potions and books. Over all the years I have been in this field, I am still amazed at the stuff we fall for. It’s like all common sense goes right out the window. I have met so many intelligent, successful people shell out all kinds of money with the hopes of some miracle result. Keeping up with the barrage of new theories, diets and products is like keeping up with the Kardashians: They seem attractive at first glance but we end up looking like big asses in the end! I love the justification used by some hucksters, “Doctors don’t want you to know.” I think more accurately, doctors don’t believe this stuff because they have medical degrees, and a little thing called science gets in the way! Why are we always more likely to believe “actors” instead of people with real scientific backgrounds? Because actors are so good looking! If only we could do what they do and look like them. And scientists? Well they aren’t always attractive and can be dry and boring with complicated explanations. Did I mention how good looking actors are?! No wonder we end up saying, “I’ll have what she’s having!” But, it is fun to explore the scams. Let’s look at some of the silly theories that literally get in the news and the stomachs of trendy Americans. 1. Bulletproof Diet including “Bulletproof Coffee.” This is the newest trend hitting Hollywood by storm. The coffee has butter and oil added to give you bulletproof energy. It is more like 400 calories of greasy Joe to me! Americans are already coffee addicted so any diet that puts coffee at the forefront is sure to be a big hit. The so-called “energy” people feel is the effect of caffeine and large quantities of butter and fat calories. The other advice doled out
28
WOUNY.COM • JAN | FEB 2015
by the Bulletproof diet involves calling some foods toxic and others “bulletproof.” Although eschewing processed and fast foods is sensible, calling foods like soy toxic and kale, almonds and apples suspect, is well, “suspect” advice. 2. HCG Diet. HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone found in the urine of pregnant women that diet proponents believe acts as an appetite suppressant. This diet aide has no scientific proof to back it up but that doesn’t stop people with more money than sense. HCG is injected, typically into the thigh, or taken as a drop under the tongue. Along with a daily dose of this hormone, the diet involves consuming 800 calories per day. At that calorie level you are sure to end up in starvation mode. In fact, when the body is starving the brain gets a little fuzzy. Urine cocktail anyone? 3. Atkins Diet. This diet has been around since 1972 and most people who have followed this diet at one time or another have sworn that they have lost loads of weight. Only problem, once they went off, the weight came back on and then some. Although eliminating carbohydrates in favor of big steaks and butter seems delicious and fun at first, it gets monotonous after a while. You start dreaming about carbs in your sleep and as soon as somebody orders a pizza… game over! If you can’t stick with it, it really isn’t effective. This year forget the fads, forget the trends and go with an eating plan you can live with. Think about what you are doing right, and build on that. Believe what your mother and grandmother used to say. Eat more fruits and vegetables, move your body and eat less. In the end, fad-dieting is a total “waist” of time.
