History Repeating itself, Should it? By: Mary McCandless
I
t is said that history repeats itself, and if it does, why does it take so long? There are some things in history that I think many of us would not want to have repeated. For instance, the volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii, the destruction of Rome and some other terrible events that occurred in early history. Nevertheless, when it comes to technology, we are surprisingly very slow to capture it from ancient history. One very interesting example is the Antiythera mechanism that was found in 1901 from a sunken Roman boat. Created by the Greeks; The Antiythera mechanism was carbon dated and researchers found that it dates back to about 150 BC. This device is what we would probably call a modern-day clock with 37 gear wheels, it was used to track movements of the moon and sun. The first geared clock was not invented until the 1600s. Pretty impressive! It is amazing some of the inventions that were made over 2,000 years ago, but surprising that much of it was lost in time and only to resurface 2,000 years later. Some of these inventions that go back even further, was the use of steam to heat wood so that it can be shaped, brick ovens for cooking, or concrete that withstood the test of time to make ports for ships. Did you know that Hero of Alexandria was an engineer and mathematician in Alexandria, who created the first vending machine, stand alone fountains? He also created a vessel that with heat and displaced water along with ropes would open and close temple doors! Amazing. (history.com) When I read about what was created thousands of years ago, I couldn’t help but wonder, “What happened to all of this knowledge?” Why did we lose it and why did it take so long to catch up to us? We were not using steam to its fullest extent, and vending machines have only been in around since the 18th century. For the most part, we are still a very primitive society. There seems to be a 2,000 year gap, and instead of forging ahead in history with much of the technology used from ancient times, we somehow reverted back and had to start over.
Could it be that during that time no one had an interest for the past? It is confusing. I often wonder, why we did not question the earlier use of inventions, and why did we stop using what worked? So fast-forward to present day, why are we in a space station that just circles the earth and not traveling to Alpha Centauri by now? Hmmm. If we take this same logic and apply it to what we do as people, sometimes we cannot get away from the past. They say old habits die hard, and yet we repeat the past. I am guilty of that myself. When I find myself doing something I did in the past that did not quite work out, I stop myself. I think about why the old ways really do not work for me and change them. The key is to stick to it. The same can be true for relationships. We stay in relationships that are not healthy, but why? Is it because it is safe or comfortable for the moment? It usually does not last, and things go back to the way they were. Did we see our parents or others stay together because history says that is what should be done? We try to convince ourselves that it will get better and just wait it out, but that never happens. It can be a scary thing to make a drastic change to your life. It is not easy, and it does get better! More importantly if it is going to help you not repeat history and make your life what you want, taking that new road is not a bad idea. Our lives, our history should be of our own making, happy and fulfilling. It should be that legacy you leave behind whether it is for your children, family or friends. Our lives should not be just dealing with a situation, it should be about forging ahead and never looking back. It is about changing our history and not repeating it. Also, change is not failure it is progression to be allow you to get to where you need and want to be. Take a look at your history, your life’s journey, is it the path you want to be on? If not, change it and make new history.

Plastic Surgeon vs Cosmetic Surgeon:
What’s the Difference? By: Beth Phillips, RPAC
Plastic surgery is a booming business! With the aging population feeling over all healthier and more vibrant than in previous decades, the number of plastic surgical procedures being performed is at an all-time high. Since 2000, overall procedures have risen 115%! Young women (and men) that follow celebrities such as the Kardashians have also jumped on the bandwagon. These days, there seem to be fewer stigmas attached to cosmetic procedures, and many people equate it with elevated financial and social status. When a patient begins a search for a doctor to perform aesthetic surgery, many are unaware that there is a difference between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon. Cosmetic surgery is performed by many physicians, but unfortunately, some are not under the guidance of a properly credentialed board. Many physicians can be called ”cosmetic surgeons,” but they need to be credentialed by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in order to call themselves a Plastic Surgeon. Cosmetic vs Plastic Surgery Training Following medical school (usually at least four years), a board-certified plastic surgeon must complete at least three years of general surgical training, followed by three years of focused plastic surgery training. Many go on for further fellowships in specific sub- specialties such as microsurgery or craniofacial surgery. Plastic surgical training takes a minimum of six years, and many board-certified plastic surgeons have 10 or more years of post medical school training. This education is the key difference between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon. A practitioner referring to themselves as a “cosmetic surgeon” can belong to any medical specialty. They could be a general surgeon, OB/GYN, family practitioner, internist, etc. The training in cosmetic surgery could be a one-year fellowship, or a weekend course. The difficulty lies in there being no unified board that oversees all of these other practitioners. The level of training can vary radically, and does not mirror the training of a board-certified plastic surgeon. Why are these standards so important? It truly requires an understanding of the reconstructive principles learned during plastic surgery training to be fully competent to perform a cosmetic procedure. Although a breast implant could be placed easily by a non certified surgeon, if a complication arose, is that surgeon adept and experienced to address the complications? Board Certification It is important to confirm that your surgeon is certified by the
American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify doctors in Plastic Surgery. Facial Plastic Surgeons are specialty trained to perform plastic surgery of the face, and Oculoplastic Surgeons are certified to perform plastic surgery of the eye and brow. These surgeons have completed additional accreditations in these fields. Some cosmetic surgeons who claim to be board certified may have received their certificate from the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, which is not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. The bottom line is to be an informed consumer and ask is your surgeon certified, and if so, in what?Furthermore, whatever the procedure is to be performed; the surgeon should have privileges to perform that same procedure in a hospital. Hospitals will only grant privileges if the surgeon has met strict guidelines and demonstrated proper competency and training. Additionally, the surgeon should have admitting privileges at a local hospital should there be any complications requiring admission. This should be asked, and it is easily confirmed by calling the hospital and asking if the surgeon has privileges there. If you are considering any aesthetic surgery, it is imperative that you be aware of who is performing your surgery and the education and training which they have received. Surgery of any type is something that should be taken seriously: you want to be sure that the best-qualified surgeon is the one performing your procedure. Please consult The American Board of Plastic Surgery website for a listing of board-certified plastic surgeons. (www.plasticsurgery.org)
Healthy Summer Eats! By: Stefanie Heath es using higher animal welfare standards. Check out these easy and convenient tips on how to stay on a healthy track this summer:
U
pstate New Yorkers wait for what feels like a winter eternity to feel the sunshine on our face. With the warm weather comes the itch to explore all that New York has to offer. Summertime means road trips, picnics, a dip in the lake or a rejuvenating hike. Whether you’re attending a Fourth of July picnic or taking a weekend road trip, summer activities can sidetrack our healthy eating habits. Sticking with plant-based foods like fiber-rich whole grains and green veggies can help you feel full longer and therefore, less likely to reach for empty calories, according to the Mayo Clinic. Choosing a plant-strong diet rich in whole grains, beans, nuts, legumes, fruits and vegetables while limiting the amount of foods highest in saturated fats and cholesterol such as meat is also recommended by trusted health professionals from the American Cancer Society, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the American Heart Association. The current Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest reducing our meat intake, including processed meats and processed poultry. Perhaps the easiest — and tastiest — way to improve our diet is by practicing the Three Rs: “reducing” or “replacing” consumption of animal products and “refining” our diets by choosing products from sourc-

On the Open Road One staple that always accompanies my family road trips is a cooler I pack with snacks to avoid any gas-station temptations. I prep some peanut butter (or any nut butter) and jam sandwiches on protein packed wholegrain bread. The cooler is ideal for keeping fruit chilled. Choose easily portable fruits like blueberries, grapes or sweet cherries. Have a sweet tooth? The cooler is the perfect place to store antioxidant-rich dark chocolate. Hitting the Trails There’s no shortage of breathtaking hiking trails in New York. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll or hiking a mountain, fueling your body is vital. Homemade granola bars are a great option and simple to make. There are dozens of recipes out there, but I recommend finding one that includes chia seeds and almonds. Chia seeds contain calcium-rich omega-3 fatty acids, as well as amino acids to help absorb its protein content. Almonds contain copper and manganese, which help with blood flow and increase energy. Roasting chickpeas in the oven for 30 minutes at 350 degrees is a great way to satisfy your craving for something crunchy while hiking. The great thing about roasting chickpeas is that you can make them sweet or savory. For a sweet fix, sprinkle cinnamon and natural sugar as soon as they come out of the oven. They’ll become caramelized and glossy. If you prefer salty snacks, coat chickpeas with
a small amount of olive oil and chopped fresh herbs of your choice before roasting. One of my all-time favorite hiking snacks is homemade kale chips. Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense foods since it packs in vitamins A, K and C, fiber and protein. If you lightly toss a bunch of kale (be sure to remove the stalks and chop the large leafy pieces) in coconut oil, and a dash of garlic salt and pepper, you’ll have a satiating and energy packed snack at your fingertips. Summer Fun Picnics and Parties Graduation parties, Fourth of July picnics, dinners by the lake and other events fill our summer weekends. More often than not, we are confronted with greasy, fatty foods that wreak havoc on our arteries and waistlines. For backyard barbeques and potlucks, I choose a plant-based dish that will be sure to wow the crowd. Some big hits have included a chickpea pasta with a creamy avocado sauce and homemade black bean burgers topped with corn salsa relish. Another surefire way of staying on track is by packing a personal main course. Most summer gatherings include a grill, so I’ll bring enough plant-based Italian sausages to share. Try to think green by loading up on veggies at the party. If there’s a bean based salad or dish, try to eat that first. The fiber from the veggies and beans will help you feel full faster, which will help deter any mindless grazing throughout the party. Whether you’re a plant-based foodie or just need a little help to accommodate your friends and family at your next summer celebration — healthy options are easier than ever to find! Stefanie Heath is the New York food and nutrition coordinator for The Humane Society of the United States.
Quick Summer Granola Bars By Stefanie Heath
This energy blast granola bar is easy to make and can last a few weeks in your fridge. Grab a few bars for a hike, road trip or if you’re in need of a breakfast on the go. Once you make this recipe once, I can guarantee these bars will become a staple in your house!
Healthy Granola Bars Serves 8 to 10
Ingredients: 2 ¼ cup of rolled oats ½ cup chia seeds ½ cup pumpkin seeds ½ cup dried cranberries ½ cup of peanut butter (or any nut butter you prefer) ½ cup of agave nectar
Directions: 1.)
Mix oats, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, and dried cranberries in large bowl.
2.)
Mix together the agave nectar and peaunt butter (you can add a pinch of salt here if you’d like, but it’s not necessary). Pour into oat mixture and combine. You’re looking for a sticky consistency, so if you need to add more agave nectar, do so here.
3.)
Line a shallow baking pan with foil. Pour the mixture in the pan and flatten it. Cover with another layer of foil and refrigerate for a minimum of six hours. Cut into bars and keep them indivually wrapped so they’re ready to go. Enjoy! wouny.com • July/ August 2017

FRESH FACES
We All Scream for Ice Cream How Gina Husted Became the Queen of Skippy’s Ice Cream By: Amari D. Pollard
S
kippy has always been a mystery: as illustrious as Santa Clause and as illusive as a leprechaun. As a kid, and even as an adult, all you knew about Skippy was that he sent his trusted workers into local neighborhoods when the clouds dispersed, and the sun came out. They handed out happiness on frozen sticks, found in bomb pops and Nutty Buddies. When the familiar jingle echoed down the road, it was the universal Upstate New York signal to scream for your parents to get the money out and then run down the street before it was too late and Skippy’s was gone.
asking if we’re coming to their area today.” Right now, Husted is in the heart of ice cream season, so work is around the clock. Most days she’s stuck in the office while friends are posting pictures on social media of them by the lake or on the beach, and for a moment Husted thinks she might be doing something wrong, but then she remembers the work she’s doing is worth it.
Little do people know; Skippy resides right off 7th N Street and is actually a woman. Gina Husted has been at the helm of Skippy’s Ice Cream for the last 10 years, making sure Central New York gets its fill of ice cream for the summer months. Husted and her husband were approached by the previous Skippy’s owner about 15 years ago to become partners and decided to go into business together. The owner still managed the company and ran it out of East Syracuse, but when he was ready to sell the company, the Husted’s thought becoming the full owners was a no brainer. They had the infrastructure from Husted Dairy and Ice and eagerly stepped into the leading role. “I loved stopping Mr. Softee, which was big when I was a kid, but never thought it would become something that I would put out there,” says Husted. “It’s funny to think that people now call me up
“I like being busy and thinking about creative things we can do, like menu items for Skippy’s soft-serve trucks,” says Husted. “We’ve come up with a cheesecake sundae, ice cream sandwich sundae, and ice cream nachos. I try to do a lot of different things, so I’m always bouncing around, and it makes the day go fast.” Husted wants to do everything, and does her best to make sure it works. Skippy’s has attended the Syracuse Food Truck and Craft Beer Festival and the Chinese Lan
tern Festival, weddings, communions and a funeral, just to name a few. Right now, Husted is looking forward to expanding the company into other areas around Upstate NY. Giving back to the community is important. We gave a portion of May’s proceeds to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and Elmcrest Children’s Center,” tells Husted. “I like to give back because without the community, we’d be out of business. The businesses around here keep this small local business in business.” The dream for this business is to keep it going for as long as possible, or until one of the children decides they want the family business. All three have worked for Skippy’s in some capacity and have an affinity for ice cream, just like their parents. “It’s nice to have them around and working with us, so who knows…” laughs Husted. “They may want to stick around Syracuse and take over. The opportunity is there if they want to take advantage, but all in all, I want to see them happy.” Until then, Husted enjoys running things. It’s definitely not what she pictured herself doing—she originally wanted to be an architect but went for an office job when she discovered it was more than drawing blueprints, eventually working at Bond, Schoeneck and King—but she’s happy. Husted gets to bring people happiness on frozen sticks, and that’s pretty awesome.

Let’s Go Glamping!
T
By Amari D. Pollard
here’s nothing better than becoming one with nature. Watching the soft waves of the lake as you wait patiently to catch a fish or letting the heat from the campfire crawl up your skin alongside goose bumps as you listen to old ghost stories. For the most part, it’s calm and relaxing, but then you have the pestering bugs and bumpy, damp ground that taunt you with the probability of a sleepless night. Camping can be a good time, but it certainly isn’t for everyone. Which is why so many people are grateful the brilliant minds of innovators and hipsters resurrected the Turkish Ottoman tradition of glamping.
That’s the experience they want their guests to have. “We’re very enthralled in this fast paced, technology-driven life that we lead now, and we’re getting the point where people need a true break,” says Boustani. “You can go away and still be so connected, either by technology or in your mind, that it’s hard to unwind and enjoy where you are. But you relax the moment you get here—it puts you in a different state of mind.” Why camp, when you can glamp.
Glamorous camping—or glorious camping, whichever you prefer—puts you at the heart of mother nature with all the amenities of luxurious lodging. Forget about having to lug your camp equipment for miles, pitching a tent, and dealing with the late-night chills. Now you have heated tents and queen beds clothed in Egyptian cotton to help you rest easy. The summer months in Upstate New York may belong to salt potatoes, buying from local farm markets, and The New York State Fair, but glamping might just become another staple of the season. Glamping used to be most prevalent on the West Coast, but now the East is catching up and Upstate New York is home to some of the most premier glamping destinations, equipped with tree house yurts, full spa access, and “tent service.”

Sharon Boustani of Gilbertsville Farmhouse in South New Berlin, NY insists glamping is something everyone should try at least once, and once they do, they’ll instantly understand why everyone is obsessed with the trend. “[Glamping] has created an opportunity for people to enjoy what campers have always enjoyed: getting back to nature. That’s why I think it has become so popular, because you’re able to enjoy the outdoors with some of the comforts you’ve come to expect,” says Boustani.

Gilbertsville Farmhouse, run by Boustani and her husband Aldo, primarily operates as a rustic wedding and retreat venue. Their 125-acre property is equipped with a milking parlor, reception barn, glamping village, and hammock park. Guests are able to indulge in activities ranging from backyard movie nights to a game of volleyball to goat yoga—yeah, got yoga. (You would be astounded by how relaxing doing yoga with baby Nigerian dwarf goats is!) The Boustanis originally purchased the property from dairy farmers to use as a vacation home for their very busy city family. The beauty of the area and the slower pace of a small town gave them a way to escape New York and truly appreciate their time away.

Are you an online shopper? BBB has helpful tips to avoid a scam By: Melanie McGovern, Communications Director BBB of Upstate New York We all know you can’t beat the convenience of getting what you need at the click of a button; all too often, consumers find what they ordered is not what they get. Worse, many websites are total scams that take your money and don’t send a thing. How can you be certain the websites where you shop are legitimate? More than two-thirds of North American consumers shop online on a regular basis, and Better Business Bureau handles more than 10,000 complaints each year about internet shopping. Better Business Bureau® of Upstate New York wants everyone to beware of fraudulent websites that pop up, sometimes looking almost exactly like the real thing. Since its inception in 2015, over 5,000 reports are on BBB’s Scam Tracker tool. Scam Tracker provides the public with crowd-sourced scam information. Several people have complained to BBB or filed Scam Tracker reports about ordering merchandise and not receiving it. When they try to contact the company, they find there is no customer service number and that too many times, the website is being run overseas. So how do you know a website is the real deal? BBB says look for the following: Spot look-alike sellers. Watch out for web addresses that use the names of well-
known brands along with extra words or letters. It’s easy for scammers to copy a retailer’s website by taking its photos and descriptions. Even the confirmation email can be deceiving and seem legitimate. Check out businesses at bbb.org before you shop. Look for the BBB seal. Some websites take the BBB torch seal and use it fraudulently to trick consumers into thinking it is a legitimate business. To check if a company is a BBB Accredited Business, click on the blue BBB torch icon; it should take you to bbb.org to view the company’s Business Profile. If not, there is a chance it could be a scam. Advertisement of products on social media. Several scams reported to BBB were advertised on social media or used social media as a means of contact. Remember, anyone can create a Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or Twitter account. Check to see if the social media accounts have links to websites to make certain the business is legitimate. Check a site’s security settings. If the site is secure there should be an “s” in “https://” and a green lock icon in the address bar on the purchase or shopping cart page. Are you still not sure if a site is legitimate? Before you commit to buying anything, make sure to follow these tips:
Is the website asking for an unusual form of payment? Just say no! Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay with a prepaid debit card, gift card, wire transfer, third party, etc. These payments most often can’t be traced or undone. Be wary of signing up for an account. Some websites require credit card information when creating an account. By creating an account and providing personal information, it may mean signing up for an unknown subscription, charge or for scammers to hack your card information. Remember, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is! To learn more about BBB’s Scam Tracker, visit bbb.org/scamtracker/upstate-newyork ABOUT BBB: For more than 100 years, Better Business Bureau® has been helping people find businesses, brands and charities they can trust. Creating Her Recipes, Path and Empire! Julie Ann Sageer’s irresistible Lebanese cuisine quickly gaining demand! wouny.com • July/ August 2017

J
ulie Taboulie’s hot cuisine is exactly that – everyone wants some of it! Her extremely warm, genuine and loving demeanor matches perfectly. Growing up in the suburbs of Central New York, and her early years in Utica, NY, Julie Ann Sageer was always surrounded by family, friends and…. Food, Lebanese food. If you are not familiar with Mediterranean home cooking and the popular Julie Taboulie…,please allow me to introduce you. Julie Taboulie, who is Julie Ann Sageer, received this loving nickname by her tightknit family when she was just a little girl. Taboulie is one of the first Middle Eastern grain salads Sageer learned to make at a young age, and it makes perfect sense that it has become an everlasting part of her identity. It was, and still is, one of Sageer’s favorite dishes. Sageer lost her beloved father when she was only six years old. Her step-father, Richard, has been all she could have asked for and more; their relationship is very strong. Our Publisher, Mary McCandless and I were lucky enough to meet Sageer in her stunning; McKenzie-Childs accented kitchen where each episode is filmed (but we will come back to that later). While Sageer was talking to us and answering questions, she was happily cooking for us as well. She never skipped a beat. Listening to Sageer speak of her successes, watching her cook amazing food and noticing out her window several peacocks, roosters, Guinea hens and rolling hills…yes, I’d say this was one of our favorite interviews. “I have always had an obsession with food and cooking, since I was a little girl. Growing up the youngest of four in a family-owned restaurant, food was always a focus. Both my parents are from Lebanon. Though it wasn’t the path I thought I’d follow after college, I could not be happier. My dream is now a reality,” said Sageer. “None of this could have happened without my Hindi “ (mother), added Sageer, with whom Sageer is extremely close. Sageer went to college in New York City. Afterwards, in 2007, she became a successful television producer, writer and host for segments on Bloomberg’s NYCTV. Sageer said, “I absolutely loved it. But it was not driving me. I was especially fond of the cooking segments on TV. I truly related to it.” Shortly after, Sageer noticed there were
no cooking shows focused on Lebanese or Middle Eastern cooking. Sageer laughed, “The professional chefs I did see cooking Lebanese food were doing it wrong!” Deep down, Sageer’s passion was building inside of her. She wanted to teach people – all people and any people, how to cook Lebanese food. There simply was not enough representation. The turning point for Sageer truly came after an incredible, month-long visit to Arde, Lebanon. “Later that year [2007] I was able to travel and finally see the country of Lebanon, of which I had heard so much about over the years. When my mother came to the United States, she came only with her brothers and left behind her four sisters and parents. I cherish my family and especially my Sitto (maternal grandmother). She would visit us in the U.S. on occasion, but I wanted to see Lebanon for myself,” said Sageer. That trip was immeasurably important and meaningful to Sageer. She met many family members for the first time, explored her Lebanese roots and embraced her beloved culture. Sageer’s family in Lebanon were exactly as she was – warm, friendly, loving and wonderful cooks! They shared countless recipes and Sageer amp ed-up her Arabic speaking and learned much more about the language, she so adored. “I returned to New York and continued with my job at NYCTV, but knew I wanted to make a change,” said Sageer, and that, she did. Sageer called her mother at home in Upstate NY and said, “I am coming home, and I am going to teach Lebanese cooking.” Once again, Sageer’s mom was by her side to support her. Sageer moved home the following year, began teaching Lebanese cooking classes all over the area – Liverpool, Skaneateles, Ithaca, Baldwinsville to name a few. She also started research as well, as to the status of Lebanese cooking classes. I accomplished many of my cooking classes with the help of Library Director Carol Johnson, who is now the Director of the Mundy Branch of Onondaga Country Public Libraries. Sageer stated, “My cooking classes were a huge hit, each one sold-out. People loved them, because it was different and primarily the people attending the classes were non Lebanese. I started with a small budget and introduction courses. I taught how to cook Taboulie, Hummus, Falafel and Baba Ganoush.” All the while, Sageer’s mom was right by her side. She continued to teach Sageer new

It has drawn visitors as they are surprised to learn I am filming in Central New York. I love to represent local items for my viewers.” I asked Sageer what advice she had for those of us who want to be fabulous in the kitchen, as she is. Sageer replied, “Be present and instinctual. Taste along the way, while you are cooking so that you know what to add. The food will tell you how to season it. Taste and smell your ingredients as well. The food will guide you. Have generosity in your cooking; don’t hold back on ingredients.” She proved her advice in the meal she served us. Now back to Julie Taboulie’s actual kitchen. It looks as if you’re stepping onto the set of Food Network TV. The beautiful white arched and glass cabinets are offset by the marble counters, blue glass and McKenzie Childs Courtly Check; Parchment checked, Piccadilly and more. The vintage glass chandelier hangs graciously above her home-grown spices and vegetables. Everything has heart and love attached. It is very noticeable. As well, Sageer’s endless, vibrant, colorful Lilly Pulitzer outfits embody her personality and her kitchen to a tee. Sageer gave many thanks to her Producers and Underwriters, Visit Syracuse, David Holder, Carol Eaton and Nakita Jenkowski. Sageer continues on the road as well, as a guest on various traveling cooking shows in New York, Ottawa, Albany and many more where she is happy to meet and teach thousands of guests of all communities. Through it all, Sageer’s mom has stood by her daughter and will forever support her goals and hard work. They’re partners for life. Recently, Sageer and her mother landed in Los Angeles while they worked hard on promotions. “My mother and I were in an elevator to meet another producer. My mom looked at me and said,

I could not do this without you. I wouldn’t be the woman and chef that I am today without you. Because you believed in me, I believed in me. I believe in you. I am blessed to have you as my mother. ON A RAINY DAY

icture this, you’re at camp enjoying some family time surrounded by nature. There are so many things to do, all of them relaxing and away from the hubbub of daily routine life and stress. That’s right there is no stress to be found. You do things with people you love like taking a walk in the woods or swimming in the nearest water hole. Vacations what a wonderful idea! The last time I was in this euphoric place I stayed in a rustic cabin with my husband and some friends on Cayuga Lake. It’s exciting to just be in tune with nature and not to know what you might find as you explore your surroundings. It has pioneer roots, and that’s all you think about. What will we do when we wake up early in the morning to see the sun shining into the window, the birds chirping happily away? You wake up and stretch, yawn and make yourself that first cup of camp coffee. Taking a sip of warmth you look outside to see what your day will be all about, In Upstate NY, as most know it can be a lovely warm sunny day one day and revert to early spring the next day (a bit cooler, windier, rainy), The weather changes here as often as you change your underwear. So, it’s best to be prepared for more than those perfect days. There are some easy ways to prepare for inside days before you leave. I understand that there are many places where you may not have Internet connections. Depending on if you do or do not make a difference. If you don’t have the Internet, then I would jot down in a notebook some items that look interesting for you and the family to enjoy inside. Many of these items can be found on Pinterest. Once on Pinterest, search for ”camp art projects,” “nature art,” “kids nature art projects,” “doodles,” “DIY” or anything else you can think of that you’d like to try. There is one idea that I have wowed people with which is marbleizing paper is of minimal cost and easy way to create.

Here’s what you need: 1. white paper, a clean styrofoam tray, cheap shaving cream, watercolor set or food coloring, some playing cards that don’t matter anymore, a thin stick (bamboo skewer, toothpicks), a paintbrush and water. Here’s what you do: 2. Cover the Styrofoam tray with shaving cream. 3. Use a card to smooth it out. 4. Drop color on top of the shaving cream in lots of places, don’t be afraid to use the paintbrush to swoosh it around but don’t paint down deep into the shaving cream. Keep the color on the surface. 5. Using a thin stick, next begin mixing the color either in a swirling motion or move the stick across the shaving cream until you reach the end of the tray. 6. Place the paper over your design and gently pat it down. 7. Lift the paper up, you will have the shaving cream on the paper. Use a card to scrape the shaving cream off. You will see a beautiful marbleized design underneath that is instantly dry as soon as you remove the shaving cream! If you Google book making or watch it on youtube, you can, then use your paper for the cover of a nature walk book. Now you can take blank pages to press flowers or leaf rubbings and create your own book. Anything is possible. This makes a lovely journal as well. Watercolor is inexpensive and easy to travel with.

Other fun projects:
Rock Painting Kids love it!
Paint with Water Colors, It’s fun! Even setting up a vase of flowers you’ve collected in the woods is a great way to paint a memory. Just using your imagination can take care of hours and hours of whining and boredom of what to do on a rainy, cold day. Some of the hot projects during the day are coloring books for grown-ups (or kids), making slime, Jewelry making using beads, and rock paintings to name a few. There are many craft kits you can buy that would make any rainy day easier to deal with. So, instead of my usual interesting artist of the month I wanted to give you some really fun ideas and suggestions about how to find what you love to do IN ART over the summer.
Enjoy your Summer, Audrey Levinson

Opens Up About Depression On Their New Album
M
ost of us know her as the flaming red little spitfire, screaming angsty punk lyrics into a microphone much bigger than her hand. She charges the lead for the rock turned alt-pop band Paramore. However, now sports muted blonde hair and a stronger sense of self in her adult years as a 28-year-old paving the way for women in music. Paramore recently released their fifth studio album, titled After Laughter. The band wanted to represent what really happens after the smiles and happiness fades away. After a semi-public exit from the group, bassist Jeremy Davis quit on what seemed like bad terms. This left Paramore with only two members: Hayley Williams and guitarist Taylor York. Williams recently opened up to radio host Zane Lowe about her battle with depression and anxiety while deciding whether to salvage what is left of Paramore or quit everything and continue on with her normal life.
By: Abbey Adams this song understandable and fresh to anyone who hears it. The slowest song on the album, “26” is actually the happiest. Showcasing positive lyrics about looking forward. It feels as though she’s writing a love note to her younger self-saying, “It’s okay. Keep your chin up.” Williams describes the writing process as a sort of therapy, saying, “It’s hard to talk to yourself sometimes in a loving way. I sat on my stairs in my house for three hours and just didn’t leave until I finished it. And when I got up, I was like,
‘I think I did it.’”
Lowe asked Williams if she’s struggled with depression. “Now, yes, three years ago, no,” the singer says, “I think it gave me empathy for friends who struggle with it. I know both Taylor (guitarist), and I have had such difficult times verbalizing how we feel about life.”
According to the World Health Organization, over 300 million people live with depression. It is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. Building an album around the concept of unhappiness is a heavy weight to lift, but Paramore accomplished it well.
On the track, “Forgiveness,” front woman Hayley Williams croons, “And you, you want forgiveness, but I, I can’t give you that.” A song about not being able to let go of something that hurt you. The Mississippi native says, “We’ve had what I feel is the most real and very truthful forgiveness and redemption amongst this group of people.” Pop beats and groovy guitar chords make
After being in the music scene/spotlight for so many years (Paramore started when the members were all teenagers). Williams has somewhat never adapted to the “fame and fortune” that soon came from the success of the group. She sheds a light on being a role model for others on the song “Idle Worship.” “I would go out and run into someone with a Paramore shirt on,

and I knew I wasn’t the same person that I was on that T-shirt and maybe I had never been. It made me sad and angry.” She continues to explain the thought process behind putting these feelings on paper and how it grounded her, “It forced me to think about the one thing that’s bulletproof for me, which is faith. It stopped me from seeing myself in this painted version of myself. I knew at that point that I wasn’t gonna mourn that person anymore.” Several studies have been done on the mental effects of music and all the results are extremely positive. The American Psychological Association says, “Music improves the body’s immune system function and reduces stress. Listening to music was also found to be more effective than prescription drugs in reducing anxiety before surgery.” In other words, there’s literally no harm in music. Almost every song on After Laughter has an underlying sense of confusion, loneliness, and sadness. On the closing track, “Tell Me How,” Williams says, “I had a lot of feelings about just losing people...Everything did feel life or death while we were writing this record. Everything mattered and was significant, every feeling.” The importance of this record is something Paramore fans have been praising the band for. One song could save someone’s life or maybe just bring them peace. Williams says, “I can stand in front of anyone and say that there’s so much peace now.” If you or anyone you know is struggling with anxiety or depression, please visit: https://www.adaa.org/finding-help for more information.

Insurance For Every Need
J
une 2017 - Recently, I was dramatically reminded of the need for a conversation about insurance planning as a part of any discussion of financial planning and goals. We often think of planning for a secure retirement as being all about what we have saved in our 401(k), other retirement plans and investment accounts. We take great care in crafting a suitable portfolio and allocation to fit an individual or family’s risk tolerance and time horizon. We carefully monitor the investments, with money managers who choose stocks and bonds to hold in each fund. We make changes to allocation of those investments depending upon age, stage in life, and other life changes. What often is forgotten during this conversation is what some people call the “building blocks” or “base” of your financial plan. These are the things that can keep us, our families, and even our savings’ safe when bad things happen to us, which unfortunately, they often do. I am talking about insurance. We pay premiums to insure our health. We insure our homes against damage and our belongings against theft. If we drive a vehicle, we are required to insure it and also have a liability rider to protect others, in case we injure them while driving. These are coverage that we rarely think about (other than the premiums seem very high

By: Mary Ann Pierce, CLU sometimes) but take for granted that we are always going to have to plan for. Many of us own life insurance. We acknowledge the need to replace income for our families if we die unexpectedly or prematurely. We often forget, however, or think it is too expensive, to insure one of our most important assets: our earning power. Disability Income insurance is used to replace a portion of income in the event that we become disabled and unable to earn an income. Another building block in our financial planning foundation is Personal Liability Insurance, often called umbrella coverage, another layer of insurance over and above the benefit provided by homeowners or auto insurance. In this increasingly litigious society, it can be an important part of a person’s financial picture. Finally, there is Long-Term Care Insurance, which is often used to protect assets in the event of the need for long-term care in a facility, or at home. With rising costs for extended care, it does not take long to deplete accounts that took a lifetime to build. Not having a plan for any of the above situations can derail a carefully crafted retirement strategy. In my situation, the need was not as dire as these, but I still required help. The question arose as I was telling my friend (who owns
a pet grooming business) that I had to take my Yorkie for x-rays to determine if he needed surgery, when he was inadvertently stepped on and suffered a broken leg. She said, “I hope that you have pet insurance. It will really help, as it is very expensive to have that type of surgery done.” My response - “No I don’t.” It just had never occurred to me. After writing a rather large check to the veterinary office, who did a wonderful job fixing his leg, I realized I may have a hole in my financial plan. Now I am off to research the costs and benefits of pet insurance – because sometimes bad things happen no matter how careful we are, and they can be very expensive. During your next conversation with your financial advisor, please take just a few minutes to do an insurance review. Make sure that all of your various policies are covering the risks that you think they are – and that they are enough. The peace of mind will be priceless! Hair Loss:
A Battle for Both Sexes
L
adies, if you were suffering from noticeable hair loss would you give up your friends or life savings to get your hair back? That sounds pretty extreme but 60% of people suffering from hair loss would sacrifice those things to avoid losing their hair. By the end of this article, you’ll find that you don’t have to give up either your friends or your life savings to get your hair back.
infection or child birth. In some extreme cases, it can become a chronic disorder that may last for years.
Today, women make up about 40% of the hair-loss sufferers in the United States. It certainly is not just a man’s issue. Although that statistic is alarming, the good news is because the need is greater so are the solutions. The psychological effect of hair loss on women is quite different than it is for men. By societies’ standards, men are free to go bald. It’s not that simple for women. When a woman suffers from noticeable hair loss, it can be devastating for her. Many women view their hair as one of their greatest assets and directly relate it to how attractive they look and feel. A good hair day is a confidence booster, and if you’re losing your hair, it directly effects your confidence.
Chances are if you’re reading this article, you are an intuitive woman who is or knows someone who is suffering from hair loss and now that you’re aware of some of the causes of female hair loss, what are your options? Nobody has to suffer from the effects of hair loss. Today, personally customized hair-loss treatments and hair replacement solutions are available for all women experiencing moderate to severe hair loss. With options such as multi-therapeutic hairloss treatment programs, Laser Hair Therapy, all natural Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy, undetectable hair systems, human hair wigs, and hair extensions, there literally is a treatment for each individual woman’s needs.
What are the causes of female hair loss? The most common cause is Androgenetic Alopecia. This is a fancy way of saying genetics and hormones are the culprits. Without getting too technical, Androgenetic Alopecia for women is often connected to hormonal activity and health factors like ovarian cysts, birth control pills, pregnancy, and menopause. And we all know that when genetics is involved your fate is pretty much sealed.
Where do you go to get treatment? Seeking out an experienced hair-loss specialist with proven results is the first step towards finding a solution. In Central New York, Genesis II Hair Replacement Studio is the only hair-loss studio that offers all options available for proven hair restoration. Both surgical and non-surgical solutions are available, and if you’d like more information go to their website at www.genesishair.com
Another cause of female hair loss which is connected to a trauma or extreme stress is Telogen Effluvium. This condition is typically temporary and is brought on by things like a major surgery, an

Sometimes female hair loss is self-inflicted. Traction Alopecia is a condition caused by consistently wearing tight pulling hairstyles like braids, cornrows, or ponytails. The pulling of hair causes’ trauma to the hair follicles which can cause bald patches.

Clear Path: Paving The Way for Veterans By Abbey Adams
“
My husband and I could’ve moved anywhere, but we decided to stay here. We have a really strong sense of community which I think is getting harder and harder to find,” says Melissa Spicer. She is the CEO/Co-Founder of the all-inclusive community-based resource center called Clear Path for Veterans. They partner with local businesses and organizations to connect service members and their families to the resources they need, and provide in-house non-clinical programs to ensure that our Veterans are holistically supported in all of their physical and emotional needs. Spicer has always been passionate throughout her life; Clear Path was a way for her to build trust. She says, “I know what it’s like to feel vulnerable - not a fun feeling. That’s how it started. That was the passion behind it.” Teaming up with her sister, Melinda Sorrentino, the two soon

created a model that other communities will hopefully follow and execute for years to come. A model that values community with a plethora of resources to engage the military and civilian community together. She knew they had to find the perfect location that would foster a sense of home and comfort to all their visitors. “We needed to have a safe place... We’ve lived here our whole lives, and it was a family that really loved their property.” Clear Path for Vets is 13 miles southeast of Syracuse spanning 75 rural acres of Upstate New York’s farm country. A place that brings peace and serenity to anyone who comes in contact with it. With most of their money going towards programming and services, Clear Path serves 23 counties with 27 staff members, 17 of them being veterans themselves. Spicer can’t say enough good things about the staff. “I’m very proud of how our staff

Melissa Spicer has worked through the challenges of veterans and civilians in the workplace - for overcoming some of those challenges, moving forward, and growing.” Staff members work through five different areas with veterans; wellness (financial, social, physical), employment, healthcare/benefits, housing, and education. Clear Path accepts anyone for their programs - there are no restrictions based on years served, experience, etc. In a proud tone, Spicer says to me, “We dove into warrior culture and said you all served; we thank you, and this facility is for you. That was the message that resonated with the military community.” Executive Chef, Adam Coleman suffered from severe PTSD and isolation after

serving three tours. “I would seal myself off from everyone. I’d go two/ three months without leaving the house,” he says. After coming to Clear Path for two months to run a self-training program he knew he found his new home. “I knew I was staying. I saw the view and the memorial here.” Coleman was living as a vagabond for close to eight years. He now has a baby, fiancé, job, friends, home, etc. He said, “They finally stabilized me.”
Canteen to be able to help others do the same.”
In 2015, Clear Path served 15,000 veterans, in 2016 that number increased to 18-22,000, and this year they have already surpassed 20,000, and it’s only June. When asking Melissa if she thinks there is a need for more establishments like Clear Path, she stops me mid-sentence and says, “Oh, absolutely…There’s a real need that we have found for leadership within a community that is led by the community. We want
Spicer has seen the success of Clear Path first hand. After seeing two veterans start training their own dogs, she immediately noticed their physical, social skills, smile, and relationships with their families improve. Something that only further motivates the staff members to keep providing everything they can for veterans. “Being able to deliver diversity like we do really requires the support of community - can’t do it without it.” The Central New York native says she owes all of Clear Path’s success to the community. Without the never-ending support and positive feedback from community members, Clear Path wouldn’t be as thriving as it is today. Melissa told me a metaphor that makes more and more sense every time I read it. “You know when you’re at the beach and someone gets lost in the water and everyone holds hands? Then they find the person and everybody’s happy? That’s how we have to function as a community with the veteran population. We know who they are. We seek them out, and try our best to understand them. Then really understand fully the value they have in the community and not be afraid.”

eresa and Bruno Ranieri recently opened iLoveKickboxing at 8395 Oswego Rd. This new gym incorporates workouts of professional fighters, while making them accessible and fun to anyone who is looking to lose weight and get in shape. How does it work?
In the classes, members gear up with authentic boxing gloves and perform genuine conditioning drills and kickboxing techniques on really heavy bags. Passionate instructors motivate and encourage participants to “go the extra mile” to get stellar results. ILKB is structured for any age or fitness level, and offers a complete body workout in just 60 minutes. In addition, members are burning an average of between 450 and 800 calories per class (depending on size/gender of the person and how hard they are pushing themselves). Members also love the feeling of empowerment and stress-relief that organically occurs along the way. The Benefits? When it comes to a killer workout, kickboxing is king. With its combination of power, agility and cardio, kickboxing has the ability completely transform your physical shape, as well as your outlook on life. Whether you are looking to tone or relieve stress there is nothing quite like punching out your stress while toning your body. We want you to stay fit, so we give you tips on keeping on track, healthy eating and staying motivated. Another draw to the program is iLoveKickboxing’s culture, which is a more personalized experience than traditional big-box gyms. Instructors know every member’s name, where they are with their journey and how to keep them accountable to reach their fitness goals. Members also follow and hear from their instructors and other members on social media, so there is a powerful feeling of
camaraderie both in the gym, and when they leave it too. “We are so excited to share iLoveKickboxing with our community,” said owners Teresa and Bruno Ranieri, who have spent many years in corporate America. “We knew that we wanted to create a better life for ourselves and our family. Nevertheless, what started out to be a business decision because we liked the ILKB franchise model, has evolved into more than just a professional endeavor,” said the Ranieri’s. “It is very gratifying to know that we are helping people change their lives by improving their health and showing them how to reach a level of fitness that they have always wanted to achieve,” they added. “We are thrilled to be growing our footprint in Upstate New York and in particular, the community of Liverpool,” stated CEO Michael Parrella. “In addition to assisting members transform their lives through fitness; we’re eager to show residents how iLoveKickboxing gives back to the entire community by offering residents fun jobs and career paths, and by donating funds to local charities through our ongoing fundraising efforts.” More About iLoveKickboxing

Yours, Mine, and Ours (Marital Property in the State of New York) Jeffrey Lee Drimer, Esq.
O
ften listed as the most stressful event in a person’s life is a marital separation (ahead of both imprisonment and the death of a close family member). Part of that stress comes from the insecurity of not knowing what the property distribution in a divorce would look like after years of a joint effort to obtain financial security by each spouse. As always my advice is to consult with a lawyer who specializes in the area of law you are concerned with. In this instance, Onondaga County is fortunate to have an exceptional, dedicated bar to assist you in the Area Of Domestic Relations Law. The goal of this article is to provide you with a general overview of property rights in New York State so you can be a better-informed client, to ask and provide the correct information to your attorney. In New York State, the property of a married couple is divided by “equitable distribution” which means that most of the property of a marriage is to be divided regardless of who is the title owner of that property. Key to understanding this concept is identifying what property is divided and the factors that the Court considers in the “equitable distribution” of the marital asset. For the purposes of this discussion, think of marital property (not separate property, which is defined later) as asset acquired by either party during the course of a marriage despite whose name is on the title to the asset. In general, cash, checking accounts, savings accounts, stock accounts, mortgages held by the parties, and interest in businesses are considered marital assets, to name a few. Obviously, there are many kinds of potential marital assets such as vehicles,
real estate, and life insurance. You should also know the rights that you and your spouse have acquired to “Pensions” during your marriage are marital assets, which will be addressed by the Court. The issue as to what part a professional license or practice plays in equitable distribution is in flux now because of a recent change in the Domestic Relations Law in 2016 and is clearly a subject to be explored with your matrimonial lawyer. Both the Husband and the Wife in a divorce proceeding are required to file detailed financial disclosure forms as part of the proceeding so the marital assets can be identified. Not all property is a marital property. The law clearly defines some property as separate property; for example, properties that were acquired or property that was inherited by one party before the marriage or property which was received as a gift from one spouse to the other (Engagement Rings are Separate Property). Awards in personal injury cases are separate property to the extent they are for pain and suffering. If you had an asset that was separate property and you sold it and then bought another asset that asset would be deemed separate property. Once marital property is identified, the Court has to evaluate the asset so that a value can be determined. The Court will also have to decide a date for which the value will be established (asset values could change while your divorce is pending). Eventually, the Court, with input from both parties will set a dollar amount value. Often, experts will be called as witnesses if valuation amounts are disputed. The value of separate property will also have to be evaluated as it is a factor ultimately to be considered in an “equitable distribution” decision.
The Domestic Relations Law sets forth the factors that the Court will consider when trying to make a fair and reasonable distribution of your property. They include : (1) The income of the parties when they got married and when the divorce began; (2) The duration of the marriage and the age and health of both parties; (3) The need of a custodial parent to stay in a marital residence and use its contents; (4) The loss of inheritance and pension rights upon the dissolution of a marriage; (5) The loss of health insurance; (6) Any award of maintenance (formerly alimony): (7) Any equitable claim to an asset because of a direct or indirect contribution to an asset’s value; (8) The liquid or non-liquid nature of the asset; (9) The probable future financial circumstances of the parties; (10) Difficulty in evaluating the asset; (11) Tax consequences; (12) Prior transfers; (13) Wasteful dissipation of assets; and finally (14) Any other factor the Court thinks is fair to consider! You should be aware that a transfer of property from one spouse to another is a non-taxable event and that the Courts can decide to make a distributive award in which a cash payment from one party is made to the other when it is impractical to divide or sell an asset. Divorces are often hard. The emotional burden is heavy, and the economic considerations have life-long significance to both parties and their children. Try to remember that is “equitable distribution.” Settlements are better than trials. Try to be fair. It will ultimately be to your benefit.
