DON’T RELIVE YOUR YOUTH, IMPROVE ON IT.
Warp Speed By: Mary McCandless
H
ave you ever thought about something you did, a trip, special event, party, and realized that it was a while ago since you did it? Where did time go? Your children are grown or you realize it has been several years since you last saw someone. Time is just passing by, and we do not always see it coming.
I am sure if we were in outer space viewing the earth we would look like a million ants scattering all over the place. Our lives are just forging ahead at warp speed and when we decide to slow down we have missed a lot. Our day-to-day routine is rushed. We get up, rush to get ready for the day ahead and hurry here and there for what? By the time the day is over we are exhausted from doing what? We are so consumed with everything else that is going on that we forget to absorb the present. When I see someone riding my bumper, I cannot help but wonder what that person is missing. It always brings a Simon and Garfunkle song to mind “Feelin’ Groovy”. It is a mere minute a half song that begins “ Slow down you move to fast. You got to make the morning last. Just kicking down the cobblestones, looking for fun and feeling groovy.” I know that this song is definitely old school, but it does make you wonder why everyone is going at warp speed. There is so much technology today that we have lost quite a bit of the face to face interaction we once had. Communication now comes through face time, texting or other apps. We rush to get here or there to do things that do not require a hurried life. What did you miss today? Will you miss something tomorrow? I realize at times there are things that I miss because I was in such a hurry, I missed it. I try to catch myself when I am doing that, and if I need to be somewhere at a specified time, I give myself a window for delays, so I always arrive on time. There is no need to rush, and plenty of time to absorb what is around me and enjoy the day, as we all should do. When we gather with friends or family what do we talk about? Were our lives in such a hurry that we have missed everything? Do we sit around looking at each other with nothing to reminisce about? Now, that is scary. Take time to enjoy what is around you and let the moments soak into the recesses of your mind. There are some things you may never experience again, and it would be a shame not to remember it. They say our minds are like sponges soaking up tons of information let’s keep it full and not let it dry up. So the next time you start to rush - Stop yourself and say, “Do I really need to do this?” Your life book should be filled with memories, something that you can look back on and remember. Those aha moments will be fresh and clear.

PRP Therapy
I
recently attended a conference to learn more about the uses of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). Our plastic surgery practice has used PRP for a couple of years in conjunction with micro-needling to treat skin with excellent results. It has become a hot topic in the uses for facial rejuvenation along with the treatment of thinning hair and hair loss for both women and men. The speaker has a busy dermatology practice and was describing his results using PRP injections. While he was discussing the many uses of PRP, I was started to question how it could be useful in so many different applications. It has been used to treat arthritis, tendonitis, sciatic nerve pain, wound healing and a list of other uses. It sounded too good to be true. The speaker said, “sounds like I am trying to sell you snake oil,” and I agreed. I then listened to the science supporting the uses, and it made sense. PRP is derived from blood. Plasma makes up approximately 55% of the blood volume. Plasma is a fluid that is full of nutrients, proteins, hormones and specialized cells such as platelets. It carries these components to the cells throughout the body. Platelets are truly remarkable cells that secrete more than 300 active substances in the body. When there is an injury to tissue, platelets are the “first responders” that send signals to begin the healing process. The growth factors that platelets secrete to perform a multitude of different functions that impact the overall health of cells. The major growth factors that have been identified for their effects on follicle
By: Beth Phillips, RPAC include: Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), Transforming Growth Factor-Beta (TGF-b), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF), Insulin-Like Growth Factor Factor (IGF), and Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). These factors have the ability to promote blood vessel growth and formation, cell replication and skin and collagen formation. They promote the growth of specialized cells and can improve hair growth and size. Some help to control the rate in which the body gets rid of cells as they age. They are useful in stimulating the nerves that signal hair follicles. Others are regulators of normal cell physiology, and some are known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. When platelets become activated in the skin, one of their primary functions is a process called collagenogenesis. This is the formation of new collagen cells or fibers. This can be seen in wound healing. As we age, the hair follicle weakens and the length of the anagen (growth) phase decreases, causing the hair to become weaker and thinner after each hair growth cycle. PRP is effective in improving the health of the hair follicle and keeping the follicle in the anagen phase longer. So, how are the treatments performed?? The procedure works as follows: A person has their blood drawn. It is then placed in a specialized FDA approved tube that is placed in a centrifuge and processed to separate the PRP from the red blood cells.
The PRP is then injected directly into the area(s) of concern. The patient then leaves with only a few hours of activity limitation. For facial and skin rejuvenation: PRP can penetrate the skin via micro-needling, direct injection or combined with dermal fillers and fat. The injections may be performed at any interval desired. For hair: The current recommendations vary based on studies that are on-going. Commonly suggested protocol is 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart and then maintenance treatments 1-2 times per year. As always, I feel that managing expectations is one of the most important parts of my job as a provider. Results for both are variable. In some people, there will be an impressive amount of hair regrowth, in others, regrowth may be minimal, but the rate of new hair loss should lessen or stop. Hair will continue to go through the normal cycle of hair turnover. Results may not be visible for several months because the treatment does not increase the speed of hair growth. Furthermore, hair will not grow in areas that did not previously have hair. Hair follicles that have been dormant for many years are less likely to respond to treatment and may be beyond the ability to be rejuvenated. And, if treatment is not continued, hair follicles may revert back to their prior state. PRP therapy uses the healing powers of a patients’ own body. It employs the body’s own rejuvenating potential to work in targeted areas. The science supporting PRP is very impressive! To learn more go to www. plasticsurgeryofsyracuse.com

Reframing the Race for County Legislature!
N
By: Christine Vickers
ative North Syracuse resident Stefanie Heath is striving to put the unity back into community as she begins her campaign for Onondaga County Legislature in the 14th district. No stranger to these pages, Heath is also one of our outstanding contributing writers at WOUNY. She brings a passion for her community as witnessed through the plethora of activities and programs she is involved with. We were excited to spend time with her recently as she highlighted some of them and shared her message of how action can inspire change. Heath notes that her background has profoundly impacted the person she is today. The daughter of Maria and Tim Heath, she grew up with four siblings in the middle-class suburbs of Central New York. “I learned to problem-solve early on.” As the time for college came around, I recall my dad telling me that we didn’t make enough money for college, but we made too much to receive financial aid. If I wanted to go to college I would need to pay for it myself.” Heath began working at sixteen and at eighteen started working at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the evening as they offered tuition reimbursement, while attending Onondaga Community College during the day. “I honed in on how I was going to pay for college without racking up a lot of debt, while also living a life where I could pay my bills yet still enjoy myself as a young adult. I know this type of upbringing certainly shaped who I am and my decision to focus on the community.” Heath obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Columbia College and master’s degree in parks and recreation with a concentration in therapeutic recreation from SUNY Cortland.
18 wouny.com • September 2017
Once out of school, Heath got right into human service work. “I worked as a family therapist for the Salvation Army and then moved on to nursing-home care where I was working with the Alzheimer’s and dementia population. Through this work, I really got a glimpse into the health care system and social service system and how things could work for some people and not work for others.” Additionally, Heath’s volunteer experiences ran the gamut between human services and animal welfare. She volunteered at Vera House as a sexual assault victim advocate and also started, Cuse Pit Crew, a nonprofit where through community outreach and educational programing advocates for pit bulls and other misunderstood breeds. With her sister, Nicole Heath, she founded Cuse Pit Crew in 2010. “As I volunteered in an animal shelter, I found that there was so much abuse around these dogs and no system to support the people that owned them. There was clearly a need regarding bringing awareness to the plight of the pit bull but on a bigger scale to the issues surrounding animal abuse.” A new aspect in her life along with her recent foray into the political arena, includes a professional career shift. Heath is a food policy outreach coordinator for New York State employed by the Humane Society of the United States. “Our focus is building healthy and sustainable menu options for large food institutions like universities, jails and school districts. We work on adding more plant based options and with that we can target healthy eating and issues surrounding resources. ” Heath notes that this has garnered a lot of interest, sharing that she recently has done trainings at both Cornell, and Harvard
Universities. Upcoming events include a training at Fort Drum where instruction will include creating sustainable menus that will provide more energy based food for their soldiers. Along with her full-time job, Heath continues to do contract consulting work for no-profits through Three Dog Consulting Inc. Heath shares one project that is a source of pride. “About four years ago, I was approached by the county executive’s office with the idea that they wanted to create an animal shelter at Jamesville Correctional Facility. Second Chance Shelter pairs up inmates with dogs that would otherwise be euthanized. The inmates reap the benefits of having a training program where they are working with the dogs, and receive vocational and self-esteem skills that they would transfer to their lives in the community. The hope is that they would not commit any re-offenses. “ Heath notes that she worked with the County Legislature and of the thirty men and women who participated in the program and have been released, none have re offended so far. The program was an incredible success with the long-term benefits for the community, including not incurring the costs of sending said inmates back to jail. Heath confides that she was not always interested in politics but was always interested in policy. “With my work with the Cuse Pit Crew in order to achieve change, we had to work with our lawmakers and start at the roots. I found that the boots on the ground process really worked. I began building relationships with lawmakers and the act of making them aware of what their constituents thought was important. I volunteered on various campaigns and I
knew that the process was set up for success; I wanted to be a part of that!” Heath enthuses. “Given my experience and understanding in the inner workings of the community from a human service and social service platform, I know that I can help in creating legislation that is going to benefit everybody. “ Heath prides herself on being an “action taker” and communicates that her goal is to re-frame politics as a way to take action and to pull some of the scariness out of it. “I understand that the community has been disenchanted both locally and nationally. I want to bring people together in a way that empowers them and reinforces that we are doing this campaign together.” Heath asserts that if she wins the election, it is about a whole group of people coming together. “I am just the one in the seat. I am the one who is listening and working in support of those people. I want to create a sense of belonging regardless of political party, religious background, cultural background, etc. At the end of the day we all just want to feel safe and have a quality of life; I hope I can bring that feeling back to my community.” One of her first priorities if elected is making sure that healthcare is at the forefront. She notes; the shaky ground that most people feel about this issue needs to be addressed and shares the need to make
sure that people in our community are protected. Encouraging diversity in the legislature is another reason she cites for her run. “Currently, the legislature tends to have a male heavy presence and it can be hard to get fair representation. This country was built on different types of people having different ideas, and I want to expand on that.” With a nod to that history, Heath tells us that a direct inspiration to her and someone that she reference often is Susan B. Anthony. “There is just a level of connection with her, since she did most of her work in Central New York. I am so grateful for her and the other women, who during a time of repression, persevered to make sure women were treated equally.” In a perhaps symbolic twist, Heath relates that as she was going door to door gathering petitions for her run, she met a woman who was a direct descendent of Susan B. Anthony. “She was happy to support a female candidate and assured me I have her vote!”
the menus, and I’m excited about how the food scene here continues to grow. I love that how if you really look around, you see people from all walks of life. The food, the art, the music… there are so many talented people in Upstate New York, and we can all learn from each other.” Connect with Stefanie Heath at www. stefanieheathforcountylegislature.com Facebook - Stefanie Heath for Onondaga County Legislature -14th District Twitter-@Heath4Community
As a native who has chosen to remain home, Heath is appreciative of everything that living in the Syracuse area offers. Noting her Italian-American heritage, she cites that among her most favorite thing in CNY is … the food! “There are so many great restaurants that I am proud to frequent often. I enjoy the creativity in

Talking to Kids About Money
P
By: Mary Ann Pierce, CLU
eople often wonder how to effectively communicate with their children about money. It’s easy to tell them about the importance of saving for the future or how to avoid overwhelming credit card debt. But is the message really sinking in? Money habits are learned. Our children receive daily lessons from us by the way we use our money. They see how we spend, and they see how we save. Household discussions about budgeting and saving for big-ticket items are absorbed and stored for future reference, whether we realize it or not.
always helped her to avoid over-extending on credit card debt. One woman gave her kids a ‘clothing allowance’ every year before school. It was a fixed amount, and they could spend it however they wished but when it was gone, it was gone. They could buy expensive, designer items and have a few things, or they could buy a less-expensive brand and have many wardrobe choices. These examples have one thing in common – making the situation relevant to the child’s current goals, and letting them make decisions about saving and spending.
A money lesson my father taught me is that you can’t always have everything you want, when you want it. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? One year, I absolutely HAD to have the new Huffy 1976 Independence. (Google it, it was amazing!) I was going to be the coolest kid on the block riding that bike- I couldn’t wait! Only one problem – the $80 price tag. That was huge for a present at that time. Dad said that if I could save half of the money, he would give me the other half for my birthday present. I can tell you that a lot of allowance and babysitting money went into that bike, and I appreciated it all the more for it.
I held a workshop once for children of my clients, ages 13-18. They were attentive and asked a lot of great questions, and I was feeling rather proud of myself at the end of our discussion. That is, until one of the young men said to me, “Ma’am, thank you- I learned a lot, and I understand more about credit and how to use it. However, I still want things, and I’m going to take all the money I earn this summer, and hopefully get some from my parents so that I can buy what I want.” Was the message received? Hard to tell right away. What might have been lacking in our talk was relevancy. The kids clearly understood the content of my teaching, but it didn’t appear to immediately apply to them.
A friend has a similar ‘program’ set up with his grandchildren to encourage them to save. He offers to match their savings at certain benchmarks. One granddaughter is saving for a car; if she can save $2,500, then he will contribute the same amount towards the purchase.
There is no right way to talk to kids about money – the most important thing is to give them knowledge and to model good money behavior so that our young people will have the tools to make good decisions regarding their own money choices in the future.
Another idea is for kids to split their allowance into three ‘accounts - one to spend, one to save and one to give away to a charity, or their church, etc. This helps with budgeting.

Friendship
ife has a crazy way of working its course, but it is heavily influenced by all the different types of friendships that a person can have. When you’re in elementary school making friends is less complex, you meet on the playground and bond over both liking the same games. There are many different types of friendships and how each friendship can be created, let me tell you a little bit about it. Your person: This is the person you are the closest to, like a Meredith and Christina Yang. This person to me is the person that I have known the longest. I know I can tell her all of my little secrets with no judgment and celebrate every accomplishment with her like it is her own. You can go months talking every day or not at all and still are closer than ever, that is the definition of a person.
By: Samantha Leader
people you can count on. Your mother: Yes, this is a type of friendship. As I grew older, I have learned how important it is not to take advantage of your mother. She has been there through the ugly and the best moments in your life and never left your side through it all. Your mom is even more than a friend because friends can come and go but she is the forever. Hold her close and embrace the moments that you have left. Your significant other: This friendship is practically like a best friend but closer. You will be able to talk to them without judgment. They will be there for you through
Your best friend: This person is similar to the first one. The only difference is you are with this person almost every day and will fight with this person like they’re your own sister. This person for me is someone I met through college; we may have not known each other the longest, but we grew closer than ever. You could go out with this person every night and still have the most eventful time or sit around and talk for hours without a dull moment.
many of the ups and downs that life will bring you. You will laugh, cry, fight, and love together, but it will make you grow closer and closer through the years. Once this friendship is in your life, it won’t be the same without it.
Your go to’s: These are your people, the group of friends you go everywhere with on your days/nights off. These friends are the friends whom you can call at any time of the day or night. They will be there for you when you’re sad and want to stay in with a bottle of wine or when you want to go out and stay up all hours of the night. You will talk every day and have more inside jokes then most. Your go to’s are the
Your work friends: We all have these friends. They are the people that you walk into work to on a Monday and immediately tell all of your weekend stories to. You gossip about the “older” people at work that did something wrong and take all your breaks together. Most of the times you don’t hangout with this person outside of work but when you do see each other, it is the best night ever.
Your school friends: These people are more than just school friends because they will be your forever friends. These friends are the friends you met in college and are all from different areas, making it a little bit more difficult to see one another after graduation. However, those four years are the most unforgettable years for all of us. We all created a bond that no one can even put into words. I could meet up with my friends from college after years and still act like it was yesterday when we were all living in the same house. Cherish your college memories because they are best memories you will make. People will have more types of friendships than these, but from my experience these are the most important friendships. When you grow older people have cell phones instead of toys, and no one bonds over who had the same Barbie dream house which puts pressure on making friends. It is important to remember who your close friends are, cherish them, and thank them for being there through it all.

A true Salon experience with you in mind. As women we often push ourselves too hard. Going a thousand miles a minute and worrying about everyone else in our lives except ourselves. I’ve been a hairstylist for about 10 years now and I rarely take the time to pamper myself. Being in the beauty industry it’s my job to pamper everyone else. When I was looking for a name for my salon I wanted it to be the embodiment of taking time for yourself. Revive means to bring back to life or become flourishing again. I really wanted people to step into the space and just feel revived. I truly believe in that name and I believe in what I can do for this community. Mark your calendars because October 2nd, 2017 will be our “Healing With Re:vive” kickoff date. Healing with Re:vive is probably the most important part of this salon to me. I’ll be offering FREE services to individuals undergoing cancer treatment on the first Monday of every month. We know that whenever you’re going through a health crisis it’s really hard to be positive so we want to provide some love to these people who are fighting so hard just to get through each day.

n the day we caught up with actress/writer, Michaela Watkins, it was the first break of spring. After a brief discussion on the unpredictable weather, she noted that she should really check on her dad, Mark Watkins, area resident and recently retired math professor at Syracuse University. Watkins was born in Syracuse to a family of educators. Her mother, Myrna, began her career as Latin teacher at JamesvilleDewitt High School. As a youth, Watkins attended Genesee Hills Elementary and later Moses Dewitt on Syracuse’s east side. She recalls the green rolling hills of the suburbs where she resided, “ I had little appreciation for it as a 12-year-old; nature like that is really wasted on the youth, “ she laughs. “Every time I’m back in the area, I’m struck by the scenic pastures and beautiful views” Though Watkins moved away at fifteen, Central New York connections count as among her truest and most memorable. She recalls her dearest childhood friend, Rebecca Swender, who passed from cancer. “She was the one who held every single early memory for me. She could recite our first-grade class role list, her memory brilliant until the day she died.” Watkins also got her very first taste of theater at right here at the legendary Salt City Playhouse.” I was in the chorus of a

production of Music Man. I wasn’t much of a singer or a dancer but somehow, I faked it until I made it,” she says recalling the performance. “I absolutely loved the backstage culture. Salt City is where I first got the buzz that maybe this was for me. I felt like…these are my people!” In her early teen years, Watkins’ mother went back to school in the evenings earning an additional degree in marketing. It was at this time that her parents split up, and she subsequently moved with her mother to the Boston area. Her father remained in Syracuse and she traveled back and forth between the two cities. With a nod to her success in comedic roles, we asked if she had always been funny. Watkins response was a hilarious, YES! “Being a product of divorced parents and being the youngest in my family of three, it sort of became my role. I imitated all my teachers and my parent’s eccentric friends. In retrospect, it brought some levity to the stress of our home; I got a lot of mileage out of making people laugh.” Watkins recalls one particular character of her youth that would make her family howl. “One of the first characters I ever did would make an appearance when we would have dinner together. I would take on the persona of a “put upon” maid. I’d grab a wig, my mother’s Mumu and I would be in the kitchen banging pots and pans all around. Then, I‘d burst through
the door, announcing that dinner would be out in just a moment. I would act very rattled and go back in the kitchen, yelling at fake people that weren’t there…You’re ruining everything!” Watkins chuckles at the memory and notes that the feedback from her family was the validation which she began to crave more and more. After moving, Michaela attended Wellesley High School where she further honed her interest in drama. “Up until this point, I thought that acting was singing and dancing. It wasn’t until high school that I discovered it could be more. I realized that this wasn’t just the atmosphere I liked to be in, this was something I needed to do.” She graduated from Boston University where she studied theater and began her trajectory into show business. Path to Success “Some people in this business get a real boost; they do one thing that just launches them but for me, analyzing my career, I really hit every step in the ladder. I went to Theater school, moved to New York City; I was broke. I waited tables, starving artist…that was me.” After going on a road trip with a pal to Portland, Oregon, Watkins decided to relocate. “I did a whole bunch of theater in a place where I could afford to live. I could bartend and wait on tables and actually
“I was broke. I waited tables, starving artist…that was me.” not be starving.” Watkins did that for five years and was on a track to continue performing classical theater, Shakespeare, Moliere, etc. before she realized that would change the course of her career and her life. “I remember; I had so much more fun backstage cracking people up than I did doing Shakespeare on stage. It was much more satisfying; I realized my passion was making people laugh.” Watkins then made the fateful decision to move to Los Angeles and promptly joined The Groundlings, an improv sketch comedy
Of her dream season (2008-09) with Saturday Night Live, Watkins recalls, “I loved it. It was awesome, just a thrill for a Gillian reasons. But, when I didn’t go back, it also opened up a whole other world where I started to work in things that weren’t sketch
Valerie (Michaela) with Laura (Tara Lynne Barr) CASUAL Episode 203 by: Greg Lewis/Hulu comedy.” Watkins notes that this is when she began a role in the television series, Trophy Wife and then went on to create her own series for the USA network called Benched. “Because we wrote our own sketches for improv, I was thinking why can’t I write a half hour
company. She went through their training school and got invited to join the main company. “Their main company is sort of a launching pad for Saturday Night Live. I was seen by some of the SNL writers and submitted a tape to them. I was asked to audition and went to New York …,and I didn’t get it! I thought, oh well, that was a great experience.” Fast forward a year later, Watkins received a phone call out of the blue to come back to audition for SNL. This time she snagged the role. “Because I had all this theater experience, I moved to Los Angeles kind of late. I was almost 30 when I moved there, and then I was one of the older people hired for SNL.” Watkins laughs, “It was shocking to me when it happened. At that point, I was the oldest woman hired.” It’s a Wonderful Life!
script? So my friend and I did, and it got made into a series. I enjoyed it because it allowed me to try something different.” Watkins is quick to point out that her current success is the result of years of background efforts and old school hard work. “Everything that happened up to SNL was such a great master class in writing and rigorous hard work. I don’t think I could be doing what’s happening in my life right now had I not hit every single one of those steps.”
Watkins shares that after being hired for SNL, she truly started to believe she had a shot at longevity and success in this highly competitive business. “When you get on SNL and have an actual dream of yours come true; it feels like anything is possible! So much of this career (acting) is about attitude. I see it when I see people who work all the time vs. very talented people who don’t. You sort of have to have this delusional, fantastical outlook that anything could happen. Without sounding pollyanna, I think it is essential to have an optimistic outlook. It is having that why not attitude. Why should I not
write a script?? I may not technically be a TV writer but why not, why can’t I? Rejection is so inevitable, but if you can weather rejection well, the world is saying…you are on the right track…keep

CASUAL Episode 212 Photo by: Greg Lewis/Hulu going.” As Watkins refreshing attitude and story inspire, she is keenly aware of how lucky she is. As she described it to us, one experience stands out in illustrating this point; “When I first got to SNL my eyes were popping out of my head, because it was just a dream come true. There was this one sketch we did that took place in a hot tub. It was with John Malkovich and I was in this Renaissance gown doing a version of Dangerous Liaisons, it was called Jacuzzi. I was doing lines as Glen Close’s character. Here I was doing lines from Dangerous Liaisons with John Malkovich but wearing a waterproof renaissance gown in a hot tub. Kristen Wigg grabbed my hand and said to me, Isn’t our job wonderful? I started to cry. It was like a conversion of all my worlds.” What’s Next? Watkins is back at work in her third season of Casual featured on Hulu. She proudly describes the show as kind of like an independent film but lasting three seasons. She notes that it is the most fulfilling job she has ever had and shares this about the main characters, “It is about a woman in her 40s who is divorced and is waking up in all kinds of way, interpersonally, sexually, there are some family dynamics; she is just figuring herself out and is very flawed. The character is trying to live a full life and at moments succeeding and at other moments her worst enemy. I just think it is incredibly relatable.” The comedian grows serious for a moment as she relates how the show may impact its audience, “All we are trying to do is make the most of our time on this planet and do it in a way that is responsible. But at times to really live, it requires you to step outside of your comfort zone and sometimes, there are consequences.” Watkins also shares that behind the scenes the creators are committed to promoting the experience of women in the arts. Noting that of the seven show directors, five are women. Women inspiring other women…where have we heard that before? In addition to catching her in Casual, look for Michaela Watkins in the upcoming film, The House, with Amy Poehler and Will Farrell. Connect with her on Twitter @michaelaWat

MEET Eva Hunter
R
ecently, I attended a wonder women’s art show at the Tech Garden in downtown Syracuse. At the show, I studied the artwork closely and analyzed each painting that hung on the walls. The work was as remarkable as the women who created them. One of those artists is Eva Hunter, who shares her philosophy: “I don’t do boring.” Her greatest desire was to be an artist. However, work and family life stopped her from attending college for a time. Eva did not stand idly by; she took classes with local artists and continued creating whenever she could. As soon as the coast was clear she, and her husband decided it was time to get some of the formal education in fine art that she had sacrificed years ago. Eva worked for a non-profit organization and could leave her job to pursue her fine art education at Onondaga Community College. She described her first day of college to me with such excitement it made me imagine her as the character, Mary Richards (The Mary Tyler Moore Show circa 1970-1977 ), who spun around and threw her hat Into the air with the joy of loving the place she was in. Eva is a courageous woman. She became one of the gallery directors at the OCC campus art gallery where you can find her putting up and taking down shows. She also guided people during functions and educated them about the art. I visited her studio to view some of her work; many additional pieces are in a permanent collection or on display at shows like the Tech Garden. The first piece that infatuated me was charmingly whimsical. It lay flat on a table

By: Audrey Levinson and was painted on chipboard, not a typical material most artists use. So, my first question to her was why she chose to paint this quixotic al scenes of blue flamingo like characters and other imaginative beings on chipboard. She explained that she had grabbed a board to paint for the Vacant Mural Project, and this creation would be available to be viewed by the rest of the city in one of its boarded up city houses. She also has a painting hanging on a wall of its own at Court Innovations, a program of mediation through the Near West-Side Peace-Making Center. Eva is seriously full speed ahead when it comes to becoming known in the area as a fine artist. She is not afraid to enter contests like the one at Court Innovations (she won by the way.) She believes that you just have to be yourself. She paints about her interests now. One of her interests is connecting with the Western part of the US. She and her husband have been to Bryce Cannon in Utah where the rocks look like drip sand castles and rocks stacked up on each other. She has also painted other mountains that have interesting shapes and colors. These paintings are called spelioart. This term refers to the inside of caves as seen when spelunking (deep cave exploration). Eva loves to go where most other people don’t and enjoy the physical challenge too. Her spelio paintings are visuals of her real world just as her paintings of the Adirondack mountains. She is very influenced by pattern and color. This comes naturally to her as she was also a seamstress. The paintings of hers at the Tech Garden had old and worn dolls and spiders. They give you the feeling of peering into an old attic

with only light from a small round window. I asked Eva what that was all about. She said that she wanted to portray what a phobia would look like, and she decided to choose arachnephobia! With each painting, she would know when to stop by stepping back to look over her work, and if the spider in the picture crept her out. One painting is from the spider’s point of view and what he is feeling. There was another from our point of view and so on. Eva is a very versatile artist lending her talent in many different directions. I learned that you don’t have to be instantly recognized by the style of your work to be a successful artist. The next few articles will be about these innovative ladies at the Tech Garden and how they think, live, and create.

Change the Way You Travel
“
One time I was in Germany on the ground (in a plane) in Munich for eight hours because there was a horrible snow storm going on… I’m sitting there thinking; I have a problem right now. I’m extremely uncomfortable” says Heather Hlad, the Co-Founder of SkySkarf, as she explains her time as an international sales manager. It thus began the beginning of a new adventure.
By Abbey Adams functional but also was a little bit more attractive or appealing,” says Hlad “It’s compact. You can roll it up tight and small, put it in a small bag, and take it with you on the go.” From there, the two gave the prototypes to friends who travel often and were overwhelmed with the positive feedback they got from their new creation. They knew from that point that this could be something big.

Heather explained what the biggest struggle has been thus far throughout this learning process. “Having the time to run your own business and build your own business while you’re still working full-time in order to pay the bills. Discover Bennington & Arlington, Vermont
The Battle of Bennington
H
ave you ever just wanted to get away, some place not too far from home? We all need a break from the same old, same old. Sometimes it is ok to hop in the car, drive and discover new cool places. We did just that, a spontaneous decision to get up early and head to Vermont. It was a beautiful clear day without a cloud across the sky. We were not sure what we were going to do when we got there so we decided to just explore the area. It took just over three hours, and we were in the heart of Bennington. It is a quaint town with many small shops and a lot of history. The folks there are really friendly, and the population is a mere 15,000. We arrived around 10:30 in the morning and stopped in a sandwich shop to be entertained by two locals playing tunes for the patrons. Everyone knew each other and would relax, eat their food and leave a tip or two for two musicians. It is funny how they could tell we were just visitors, because we would get inquisitive looks of wonder. Who are these people? When we came into town, we noticed this large monument, which is the Bennington Battle Monument. The monument is

306 feet tall and the cornerstone was laid in 1887, and completed and dedicated in 1891. There is an elevator that takes you up to the observation deck that has eleven-foot slotted openings, along with your own personal elevator operator who gives you a brief history of the monument and the battle. From the observation deck, you can see the hills of Vermont, view New York and Massachusetts. The monument is in honor of the Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington. “Here Brigadier General John Stark and his American forces successfully defeated two detachments of British General John Burgoyne’s invading army in 1777. Following the Battle, Burgoyne wrote to his superior, Lord Germaine, “The New Hampshire Grants in particular, a country unpeopled and almost unknown in the last war, now abounds in the most active and most rebellious race on the continent and hangs like a gathering storm on my left.” The British plan was to cut New England off from the other colonies. With the British recapture of Fort Ticonderoga and the resulting American evacuation of Mount Independence in Orwell, Vermont, the British advance southward was temporarily stopped at Hubbardton; the only Revolutionary War battle fought
entirely on Vermont soil. This tactical victory gave the Colonial forces a chance to regroup and forged the first successful resistance to Burgoyne’s plan.” What an amazing view and the cost is really reasonable.theBenningtonBattleMonument. com We then discovered “Bennington Potters” a shop with beautiful pottery, which has they have been making for 68 years. The shop is whimsical and filled with something for everyone. There are also three covered bridges that date back to as early as the 1700s that we planned to check out before we headed home. After a tour of Bennington, the townsfolk directed us to Arlington. They told us about the Sugar Shack, The Cheese House and The Chocolate Barn, and insisted it would be worth the ride. So, we hopped into the car and took the drive up to Arlington. It took about 25 minutes, and the scenery with the rolling hills and mountains was gorgeous. Our first stop was the Chocolate Barn with more chocolate than you could imagine. There was malt, dark chocolate, filled pieces and flavors, which made it hard to decide what to get. Definitely, chocolate heaven!

Next, we headed to the Sugar Shack to explore and realized that it also honors Norman Rockwell who lived in Arlington for 14 years, and used many of the locals as models. Here you can pick up posters, prints and books of Norman Rockwell along with other local favorites. Our last stop was the Cheese House, which is filled with a large variety of Vermont Cheeses, Maple Syrup and souvenirs. Of course, we could not leave without picking up cheese curds, sharp cheese and maple syrup. However, New York Maple syrup tastes much richer and better.

What a day! We met some really nice people discovered new places, food and accomplished all of this in one day. We headed back towards Bennington, with a last stop to check out the covered bridges, then hopped on to 7 East and headed out of town, making it home by 6:30. It was fun, educational, and spontaneous. Something we should all do a little more of.

t happens every year.
One minute it’s Memorial Day and summer is coming, and the next minute, it’s Labor Day. So I thought we’d Beauty Blog some finaldays-of-summer things before the fall air sneaks in.
Glisten by gutting what didn’t work. Ever wash your car and it just seems to drive better? It’s because getting rid of grime feels amazing. It’s kind of the same thing when it comes to old makeup, brushes and hair products we’ve held on to for weeks, months, or years longer than we should have. Dump it. Get fresh. Clean your makeup brushes or toss them. You can get great deals at Marshalls or TJ Maxx. Summer oil from your skin is hording on those brushes. Ew. If you haven’t used a hair serum in a year, toss it. Lighten the load of what doesn’t make you happy. Yucky doesn’t need to take up space in your life, nor, does it save you any money. We tried it, it just didn’t work or it reached its life cycle and we got our money’s worth.
Try the Boho before the summer sun go-go’s! Boho waves are youthful, fresh and breezy. Freshly shampooed or day-old shoulder length to long hair works best, and if you’re insecure about, it try it on a Friday or Saturday when you’re staying home relaxing.
Bedtime: Most of us already have tons of product sitting in a cupboard or drawer collecting dust. Let’s use it! Before going to bed, spritz your dry or almost dry hair with a light touch of styling spray, dry shampoo, or light mouse before braiding it and throwing it into a messy bun on top of your head secured with a loose scrunchie or large pins. (Tip: If your hair is too wet it’ll stay wet and won’t work, also, if you use a tight ponytail holder, it’ll leave a ring). Let your hair loose in the morning. Sameday wave: Have some ‘get-ready’ time? Spritz your hair with a little styling spray before braiding into one long, loose side ponytail you can work with. If your hair is medium length, two loose braids will work. Holding the bottom of the braid, stretch the braid flat (pancaking) and you’re your free hand, flat iron the braid. Let the braid cool off for 20-30 minutes. Then let the braid out. Voila! Boho waves.
What did we do before dry shampoo? Don’t waste time blow-drying your hair. Give it a nutritious, natural break. Be daring to try a new color, a new part, or a new product. And if you haven’t made it a staple yet, try some dry shampoo. Gone are the days most of us wash our hair every day. Not only is it time consuming when our schedules are crazy busy, but as we get into our 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s, our natural oils protect and nurture our hair keeping it from drying out and breaking. Dry shampoo is a lifeline for busy and active lives. But we certainly don’t want our hair to look like we just didn’t care. Finding the right dry shampoo can be a life saver. After trying just about every brand, a hair stylist told me to stop buying expensive stuff (which seems to leave my hair a bit wet and weigh it down anyway) and try Suave Infusion with Keratin (Target $4.99). It’s been a slam dunk. You don’t need a lot and it makes your hair feel fuller and fresh. It’s worth a 5-star try. Stay beautiful and see you next month!

“Be Your Own Boss” Starting a Business in New York State By: Jeffrey Lee Drimer, Esq. It all begins as an idea that you can do something different or better than its being done by anyone else. It can be anything from improving how a computer operates to creating a better cookie. You combine that with the ambition to be your own boss and take a risk, you are on your way to starting your own business. Now comes questions; remembering that important decisions you make in the beginning of a venture can often affect the ultimate success. A consultation with an accountant, lawyer, and an insurance agent experienced in business start ups is recommended. You don’t want your “first step” to be a stumble. This article is intended to get you off on the right foot by identifying a few of the issues that you should consider when you start your own business. The first crucial decision you have to make is choosing your business structure. There are several choices to consider and there are benefits to each one. Your tax obligations and legal protections will be determined by the structure you select. Many people start a business by fling a DBA (Doing Business As) also referred to as an assumed name, trade name, or fictitious business name in their County Clerk’s Office. Having a DBA will help you in marketing by identifying the goods you are selling or providing. You will also be able to hold money and have a busi-
ness bank account if you file a DBA. It also protects your business name from being used by someone else and assures you that you are not trying to use a business that is already is registered within the state. You may elect to conduct your business as a sole proprietorship to test your idea or concept before selecting a more complicated and expensive structure. In this type of structure, your personal assets and liabilities are not separated from your business. It is a good business structure for a “low risk” business but becomes riskier as exposure to liability and debt increases. Partnerships, also a good choice for a business structure if you share your idea and ambition with another person or group. It makes the infusion of capital possible in the simplest business format. Ask your attorney about “limited partnerships” and “limited liability partnerships.” In a partnership, partners can share the profits as they deem appropriate, but they are each 100% responsible for the debts and liabilities of the business (called joint and severable liability). Income is taxed based on partnership draws (proceeds paid out to each partner). Limited Liability Company An LLC protects your personal assets from the liabilities, and litigation that your business might run into. Profits and losses can be passed through to
your personal income without the necessity of paying corporate taxes. Starting an LLC is a little harder and more expensive than a partnership, but it can definitely be worth the effort. Corporations: The most sophisticated form of business structures and provide the participants with the strongest protection. However, this type of business structure is more expensive to form and requires more record-keeping and reporting. A corporation has its own life beyond its shareholders and can continue to exist as investors come and go. It is also the best type of business structure if you want others to invest money into your business, or you want to keep control by limiting how much “stock” you sell to investors. Remember, corporations pay taxes on profits, and these profits are taxed again when you receive them as dividends on your personal tax return. If you find that a corporate structure fits your business you may want to file what is known as an S Corporation. S Corps allow profits (and some losses) to be “passed through” directly to the personal income of the owner(s). This pass through avoids the profits from the business being subjected to corporate taxes. Once you have selected your business structure, take a moment to review these few
suggestions for a smooth start and see if they apply to your business: 1. Select a business name and see if it is available; 2. File a DBA in the County Clerk’s Office; 3. Be sure to apply for any licenses and permits required in your business; 4. Check the zoning required for your business location; 5. Get an Employer Identification number from the Internal Revenue Service; 6. Consult with an insurance agent regarding general liability for your business and business location; 7. Understand and stay current with the tax obligations of your business; 8. If you have employees, don’t forget workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance; 9. Most importantly, stay in touch with your lawyer and accountant. Don’t sign leases or contracts without fully understanding them. Make sure your tax status is confirmed, and employees are protected. (I personally like payroll services… if you have any employees. They do a great job). So now that you’ve decided on your business structure, selected your name, hired your attorney, accountant, and insurance agent and followed all the steps to start up properly, let me remind you of one last thing: Honesty, Integrity, Diligence, Industry, and Innovation have real value. Go for it. Have fun. Good Luck!
