OUR award methodology allows us to rank ALL COLLEGES using quantitative measures WHICH SUPPORT THE SAFETY AND REPUTATION ANALYSIS. Utilizing data from the US Dept. of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), as well as survey data we collected from over a thousand women on what is important to them in defining a quality college or university, we arrived at uniform measures for: • Reputation

and ranked schools according to the total points earned. Where ties existed, cost for out-of-state tuition determined precise ranking.

Get out of the dorm and explore campus. Or grab some friends and take a weekend trip to a nearby city.

Sit in the quad and people watch; you’ll be amazed at the community that exists around you.

You are about to embark on a journey that will be terrifying, exciting, and downright unpredictable.

Go to athletic events. Your school colors are now your favorite colors.

Make mistakes and learn from them.

Don’t sacrifice your ideals to be cool or to keep friends.

You will get homesick.

You made it into your college which means you can succeed. Don’t ever give up.

You’re responsible for your actions now; with more freedom comes more responsibility.

Sit in the front of your lecture halls, go to class and ask for help when you need it.

Safety in Evaluating a school’s safety record and policies are important considerations for college-bound women. Here are a few resources and key questions to help in the process.

Female students, in particular, should vet a school’s safety performance, statistics and policies prior to applying for admission. Studies show that one in 10 female undergraduates may find their personal safety compromised at one point, whether at social events, inside dorm rooms or even

just walking home at night from the library. In response, colleges are trying to arm students with self-defense strategies, as well as raise their overall awareness about violence and sexual assault. Under a federal law known as the Jeanne Clery Act, brick-and-mortar schools that receive federal student aid are required to share information about crime on and around their campuses. a variety of crimes that happen on campus and in some off-campus facilities, issue timely campus alerts, maintain a fire log and create policies to handle reports of missing students. Families should first check the annual security report, which schools must submit by Oct. 1 each year, says Abigail Boyer, assistant executive director of programs at the Clery Center for Security On Campus. The Department of Education has a site that allows users to research statistics by institution. The Clery Act provides basic rules, but colleges have flexibility in how they implement certain sections, including how they handle campus alerts about safety issues. Parents and prospective students can look at an institution’s annual security report, which should be available on the school’s website, to find statistics on crime, disciplinary actions and campus safety policies.

high school hearing how every decision you make will impact your chances of getting into the school of your dreams. It can feel overwhelming. We’ve composed a few tips that show what admissions officers value most and how to stand out in the crowd.

Get an interview if you can. It indicates that you’re genuinely interested in attending. If you get an interview, dress professionally, prepare questions about the school and remember you’re interviewing them as much as they’re interviewing you. After the interview, be sure to send a thank you note. Start looking early, and in person. A lot of students don’t realize that colleges keep track of who visits their school and how often. If you’re really interested in a school, the best thing you can do is get a campus tour. Keep your grades in check. “Getting straight A’s” is not always feasible. What college admissions officers notice the most on transcripts is a “C” – avoid these at all costs. Highlight what makes you unique. Admissions counselors recommend you create a “hook” – something about you that separates you from the other applicants. This might be volunteer work, an experience abroad, excelling at a sport or starting a new club at your school. Highlight this is in your essay. 2016 / 17

3 LOFTING OPENS DOORS. I lofted my bed just high enough so that I could fit 3-drawer containers underneath for extra storage. Take advantage of this space to fit more stuff. I use this extra storage for towels, school supplies, and kitchen essentials. This is also where you can store your food, but don’t stock up on that until you get there.

1 ORGANIZE, CATEGORIZE, AND CONQUER.

CLING WRAP YOUR DRAWERS.

First things first, dump all of your dorm stuff into one area/room. Then go through all of your stuff and separate it into categories. This way you can pack everything in related categories into the same storage. Categorizing also helps you identify areas where you over packed or overbought.

Use cling wrap to keep the drawers secure and the objects inside from moving. Basically you just wrap it around each item until the whole thing is tight and covered.

2 PAPER OR PLASTIC? Depending on how you’re moving to college (car, plane, train, or bus), you’ll have to be smart about what type of containers you use to pack everything. If moving by car, I find that a mixture of plastic containers and tote bags work best. Put small items in tote bags that you can fold up and store away when not in use.

It’s a lot easier to move in the clothes that will hang up in your closet if they are already put on hangers and ready to hang up. So, I DIYed hanging bags for my hanging clothes using large black trash bags. Tip: put the clothing items in the order you’ll want them in your closet. After all that is completed, take the items in stacks of 10 and cover them with an upside down trash bag with a hole cut at the top for the hanger to go through. Secure with a rubber band or twist tie.

These tips include the perfect ways to trim your spending as we understand a full-service move isn’t for everyone. Here are a few great ways to enjoy a more streamlined, efficient move while also watching your bottom line.

If you don’t mind a little hard work, plan on doing all your own packing. Although it will take more time to get everything safely protected and boxed up, this will allow you to go straight to the loading-the-movingvan step.

Few things are more enticing to a new college student than the words “free stuff.” If you don’t want to pay for the hassle of moving some of your things, consider giving them to other students on in your area. Not only will this make the move easier on you, but you’ll be helping the next crop of students.

If you move to and from your college campus every year, it might be worthwhile to find a storage facility nearby to keep your larger items. This way, you only have to move those items you need during summer vacation— the heavier, more costly items can wait until you return.

GET FREE BOXES You don’t always have to pay for packing supplies. Instead of purchasing boxes, try stopping by grocery stores or even book stores to see if they have spares.

PARE YOUR BELONGINGS One of the nice things about being a college student is that you don’t always have to invest in nice furniture and belongings. How to Make a Dorm Room Feel like Home We know some first-time college students don’t care to admit it, but homesickness can and does happen. Fortunately, we have some tips for decorating your new dorm room and how to make it feel more like home.

The Bed: In a dorm room, your bed becomes everything— couch, study corral, dining table, and more. That’s why it’s a good idea to create a space you feel good about. Splurge on quality bedding and lots of pillows.

Fancy Artwork: Dorm rooms are known for being covered in posters and photos. We suggest you class things up a bit by investing in one or two larger pieces that tie the whole room together. Frame a favorite poster instead. Put up a bulletin board or chalkboard that allows you to decorate and organize. Create a collage out of favorite sayings and photos.

Live Plants: There’s something about greenery that makes even the most sterile room feel like home. Find a plant that won’t mind if it doesn’t get too much sunshine (or if you forget to water it every day), and put it in a colorful pot. Soft Lighting: There’s a reason twinkle lights and playful lamp fixtures are common in dorm rooms—they give you an alternative to the harsh fluorescents overhead. A desk lamp for studying and a string of holiday lights will go a long way in making your room more inviting. And it can improve your mood too!

Play with Washi Tape:

Washi tape is colorful, playful, decorative, and—best of all—it doesn’t leave residue behind, which means most dorm rooms will allow you to put it up. You can add a touch of color around posters, on bookshelves, on doors, and on your walls without spending a fortune.

Floor Coverings: Most dorm rooms have floors that are generally ugly. Purchase a rug that will not only brighten up the space, but also provide a much-needed sitting space for when you have company. Brought to you by

1. Remove the glass and cardboard so that you’re only working with the wooden frame. You’ll need to cut four pieces of floral wire that cover the width of the frame. 2. Measure the distance that you want between each row of photos, since I used 2×2 photos, I left about half an inch from the top of the frame and an inch between each row. I marked these with a pencil on the back of the frame. This gave me enough room to make 4 rows. 3. Secure one end of the floral wire with hot glue. No need to be very neat since this side won’t be on display. Repeat on other side. Make sure the floral wire is pulled taut. It’s easiest to bend the floral wire and place a strip of hot glue along the part of the frame you’ll place the excess wire. 4. After you’ve completed all four rows and let the hot glue harden and dry, you’re ready to place the photos on the wire with mini clothespins. I could fit 4 photos on each row! A Checklist For High School Teens

etting accepted to some colleges can be quite competitive, so high school

students should take every opportunity to make themselves stand out from

the crowd. Starting in your freshman year, your efforts should focus on academics, with a healthy dose of extracurricular pursuits and college and career planning. The high school years can be a busy time, and it’s easy to lose track of the many steps involved in the college search and application process. To help you stay on track, we’ve compiled a list of what you should be doing each year.

Checklist for High School Teens FRESHMEN SHOULD PLAN TO:

A College Girl’s Guide: Dorm Room Snacks

hen your college days are filled with long walks to class, countless hours spent studying in the library, and just hanging out

in your dorm room, you’re bound to work up an appetite between trips to the dining hall. Grabbing something at one of the on-campus eateries might be convenient, but can really put a strain on your bank account/flex dollars balance. Save yourself some cash (and some calories!) by investing in healthy dorm room snacks that you can easily throw in your backpack. When you have snacks on hand, you’ll never be caught empty-handed when that mid-lecture hunger strikes.

SNACK STORAGE Last year, I used a large plastic container with a lid to keep all my dorm room snacks in. I kept this container under my bed and pulled it out whenever I needed a snack. Find a container that fits the size and layout of your room- a shelf or some smaller containers stacked on top of each other might work better for the space you are in! I also kept a box of snack-sized plastic storage bags handy, which worked perfectly for loose food (almonds, cereal, etc.). These small storage bags keep portion sizes in check, and you can stash a few in your backpack. She created a solar-powered water purification system designed to provide millions of people in the developing world with access to portable drinking water. If Deepika can do it, why canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you?

There are so many reasons why you should care about a career in STEM. Not only is it interesting and rewarding, there are many people who are willing to help and guide you through making the right choices in your career. Key considerations when choosing a STEM school: 1. Are there resources and programs in place to help you not just survive but thrive as a STEM major? 2. Are there hands-on learning opportunities such as internships and apprenticeships? 3. Is the structure of your STEM program aligned with your learning style? Regardless of difficulties that you may encounter, mentors can serve as motivation to push you towards a bright future in STEM. Opportunity secured my decision to attend University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and my experiences over the past three years have reassured me that I made the right choice. The Meyerhoff Scholarship Program, the Center for Women in Technology, and the Honors College are some of the programs that have guided my growth academically, professionally, and mentally. I have worked all over the country and made a larger impact at my school and in my community than I could have ever imagined. With all the craziness of college, it’s hard to find time to squeeze in a workout when you could be studying, eating, or sleeping. Here are three really cool

1 NIKE TRAINING CLUB

(Free)

This app is all about building and toning muscle by using classic drills like pushups, squats, and lunges. Most drills are timed and only last for 3060 seconds. Pros: All the programs come with instructional videos and an audio coach that guides you through the program. The most equipment you’ll need to do any of these workouts is a set of hand weights and a jump rope, which makes this app ideal for using in a dorm room.

YOGA.COM

Pros: While this app doesn’t offer any specific workouts, I like that I can track how many steps and stairs I take during the day. I can also track the time and distance of my runs around campus. The Fitbit bracelet syncs with both the Fitbit app on your phone and the Fitbit online dashboard.

I can’t stress enough how awesome yoga is- it relieves a ton of stress while increasing strength and flexibility. The best part about yoga is that you only need a yoga mat or a soft surface (think dorm room rug).

(free for the app; bracelets range from $60-$250)

Cons: All Fitbit models have to be charged at some point. The app will notify you when its time to charge.

Cons: Sometimes the app closes unexpectedly and then won’t let you pick up your workout where you left off when reopened.

Pros: This app is great because it lets you pick different programs based on goals or duration. Programs range from 9-71 minutes and include goals like “Balance”, “Flexibility”, and “Strong Back”. If you’re not up for completing a full program, you can opt to pick and choose individual poses. Cons: Unfortunately, most of the programs are not free. While all 280+ individual poses are free, only about 4 full programs are free.

Ways to Kick Off Your New Semester 7

Attend the first home game of the season. If you’re starting in the fall, football gets everyone riled up and full of school spirit! Make sure to sit in the student section for the best experience.

Take a picture in your favorite spot on campus. How cool would it be to have a picture in one location for all four years? You can see how you’ve grown and everything you’ve accomplished over the time span!

Fill your new planner with dates for exams, breaks, days off, and weekend plans. Use the school’s official academic calendar and fill in fall, Thanksgiving, and winter breaks. Have your syllabi? Mark your exams and big assignments now.

Have something that’s a good conversation starter. I like to bake which always gets people talking about how they have a sweet tooth.

Walk out your schedule with friends.

Jump-start your workout routine. Start exercising in the fall so that it becomes a healthy habit throughout the school year.

Try something new: a restaurant, activity, etc. New year, new you. Right?

Invite a first year/transfer student out to lunch and answer all their questions. They’ll appreciate all of the knowledge, time and advice you give them!

Sign up for new clubs. Now’s the time to find clubs that you’re truly passionate about! Join clubs and committees you can see yourself being helpful in.

Attend as many welcome/year kick off events as possible. Meeting new people and making new friends are a lot easier at these events because most of the attendees will be open to trying new things and meeting new people.

Walk the campus a couple days before classes start to get an idea of where your classes are located.

Get to know your new room/suitemates.

Rack up on free stuff

Treat yourself to one college paraphernalia item.

Take advantage of the free food and goodies at interest meetings and school sponsored events!
