I have one more packing tip that is more about moving than traveling. Several years ago, I moved literally 30 feet, from a two-level townhouse to a ranch-style home. Although I had movers, I enlisted my family to take my hanging clothes. I laid a coat on my bed and put the clothes inside. Then I buttoned the coat around the clothes to keep them organized. We made a parade from one house to the other. This strategy saved a great deal of time and could also be employed when moving garments in a truck.
When it comes to cleaning, we can all use some hints. One of my lifesavers is Formula 409. I use this to remove stains from clothes before I wash them. It’s not just for hard surfaces! In my experience, it always gets the stain out. I keep old toothbrushes as tools to clean hardto-reach places and to scour backsplashes and around sinks. Also, toothpaste works to fill nail holes… just make sure it’s white paste and not green gel.
You may have heard the old organizational adage, “A place for everything and everything in its place.” This could not be more true! When I renovated my kitchen, I went to the discount store and bought small plastic baskets to organize items in my miscellaneous drawer. There is now a place for flashlights, batteries, matches, scissors, and many things I normally would have taken much more time to find. In the broom closet, I have hooks to hang extension cords, plastic bags, fly swatters, and other things that might otherwise get tangled.
Many, many years ago, when I moved to my first home, my mom gave me a toolbox. Every home should have one. Even if you don’t do a lot of repairs, there will come a time when you want to hang a picture, measure for curtains, and so much more. Must-haves include screwdrivers (both Phillips and flat head), pliers, hammer, nails, screws, a measuring tape, string, glue, and razor blades or a scraper.
No matter how big or small the household, running it is always a challenge! I hope these ideas prove helpful.
