Whether you’re building a new home or remodeling your current one, you may find yourself asking, “Should I hire an interior designer?”Many homeowners wonder if the fees for professional design services versus the value-add is really worth it. According to industry experts, the answer is a resounding yes! Working with an interior designer doesn’t just save you time and money—it also alleviates much of the stress that comes with any construction project. The earlier you bring a designer into your project, the better.
Interior designer and interior decorator are job titles that are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same profession. Simply put, designers create functional spaces within a building while decorators adorn an existing space with decorative elements. Whether you hire a designer or a decorator depends on your needs.
A designer analyzes their client’s needs and plans layouts that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Designers understand building codes and regulatory requirements, and they can work closely with architects and contractors when developing plans. Interior designers take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam. This is a globally recognized exam and is the highest standard an interior designer can earn. NCIDQ-certified interior designers must complete a minimum of an associate degree in design and have completed three years of work experience in the field.
Interior decorators focus on embellishing existing spaces with pleasing elements such as furniture, paint, accessories, and rugs. They often partner with furniture makers, upholsterers, painters, and other home decoration professionals. They are not required to have particular training.
Before hiring a professional, consider your needs and budget. Take a look at each individual’s portfolio and be sure to get references before you make a decision. If your space requires structural changes, such as removing a wall, rerouting plumbing or electrical wiring, or adding new windows or doors, a designer is the better choice. If your space needs a visual update such as new furnishings, paint, or flooring, an interior decorator can manage this role with ease. The best choice depends largely on the skills of the particular professional. Many decorators have enough industry experience to have acquired design skills and many designers are excellent decorators.
