2012 annual report Finding Needs, Funding Change.
Welcome 2012 was a monumental year for The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham. It was our first complete year as an independent organization, and we saw the overflowing generosity of the community that makes our work possible. Our first Annual Report is packed with the names of so many individuals and corporations that ensure that The Women’s Fund continues to make life safer and more secure for all women and girls. Thank you for your tremendous support. In this report, we celebrate the members of our Founding Circle, who provided the financial resources to create the Fund; our Founding Board members, who designed our framework; our 2010 Board, 2 | Annual Report 2012
which led the way for us to become independent; the corporations that believe in our mission; and each of you, our donors, who passionately believe that positive social change for women and girls is imperative. Because of you, it is in our reach. In 2012 The Women’s Fund worked toward that change in several ways. We continued our leadership role in the fight against the sex trafficking of minors. Our Board, staff, and volunteers organized the training of hundreds of local officials, social workers, and first responders to recognize the danger signs and identify victims.
Also we completed a comprehensive research report at your request. Stepping Up for Women’s Economic Security inspired and guided our new initiative to assist low-income single women gain the education and skills they need to move into higher wage jobs. Because of your support, motivated low-income women and their children
will move away poverty and abuse and become more financially independent. These are just two examples of the many ways your philanthropic generosity guarantees success for women and girls. Brooke Tanner Battle 2012 Chair of Board Jeanne Jackson President/CEO

OUR MISSION The Women’s Fund inspires women to use their philanthropic power to create positive social change for women and girls. To accomplish our mission, we research gaps in services, we facilitate community collaboration, we fund innovative solutions, and we serve as a catalyst for social change at the highest levels.
Thanks to your support, The Women’s Fund was able to live its mission this year. We have put the resources you generously provided into finding where the need is greatest, working with community partners and finding innovative solutions 4 | Annual Report 2012
to fill that need, and acting as a change agent. Those efforts—as a researcher, a facilitator, a grantmaker, and a catalyst for change— make a measurable difference in the lives of women and girls in the Greater Birmingham area.
why i joined the legacy circle “I first noticed The Women’s Fund when it tackled the issue of domestic violence. The Women’s Fund took an aggressive leadership role in improving how the courts and law enforcement address perpetrators and victims. As a result, domestic violence homicides went from 14 in 2006 to two in 2012. Because they create positive change for women, I cannot help but give them my time and money.”
The Honorable Agnes Chappell, Municipal Court Judge and Board Member
The Women’s Fund Goals are my Goals “Of the many opportunities to give back to the Birmingham community, The Women’s Fund is my primary choice because its goals are MY goals–addressing long-term needs of women and girls. The Women’s Fund is the designated beneficiary of a life insurance policy and I gladly made a multi-year pledge. Our gifted Board carefully researches unaddressed needs and thoughtfully selects the grant recipients most capable of resolving those needs.”
Judy Crittenden, Attorney, The Crittenden Firm, and Board Member

RESEARCHER The Women’s Fund isolates critical, systemic needs of women and girls in our community. Our New Report: Stepping Up for Women’s Economic Security: Challenges and Prospects for a More Secure Future in Greater Birmingham To use resources wisely, we must first find the areas of greatest need. Our research found that, while women’s drive to contribute to society is as powerful as ever, many women in our region have their inner strength sapped by the daily struggle to get ahead. “We believe that when women move forward, the entire community moves with them.” Dianne Mooney, past president, The economic challenges for women and girls in our community continue. Over one third of female-headed households in Greater Birmingham—both single women and women with children—live in poverty. In Jefferson County, the median income of a femaleheaded household is $29,396, far below the living wage for the same family of $50,196.

RESEARCHER Our New Initiative: A two-generation approach to helping single mothers make a living wage and obtain quality childcare.
providing the education and job skills training they need and supporting safe and affordable childcare so they can complete programs and obtain higher wage jobs.
Inspired by the data gathered in our report, The Women’s Fund launched Stepping Up, our new programmatic focus to address women’s economic security for the next four years. Stepping Up will help single women increase their wages through a twogeneration approach:
Boosting women’s financial security doesn’t just improve life for today’s families; it also brightens the future of our community by ensuring a better quality of life, education, and economic attainment for their children. Thanks to your support, we are part of the solution.

facilitator We identify direct-service organizations that address the needs of women and girls and promote partnerships. Reducing the Commercial Sexual Trafficking of Minors Some problems are multifaceted and require cooperative efforts to tackle effectively. The commercial sexual exploitation of children is one of these problems. Since 2009, The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham has made it a priority to fund initiatives to increase children’s safety and stop this heinous crime. In late 2011, The Women’s Fund brought together 30 community leaders from law enforcement and
social services to determine the best route to reducing the commercial sexual exploitation of children. The most urgent need was to train “first responders” to identify signs of trafficking.
The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham | 11
facilitator In 2012, with the leadership of current and past Board members and engaged community volunteers, The Women’s Fund facilitated three major trainings on commercial sexual trafficking: 1.
Training for 30 medical first responders at Children’s Hospital.
2.
Training for more than 60 law enforcement members on Prosecuting Human Trafficking in partnership with the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Alabama, the F.B. I., and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. A session on enforcing human trafficking laws was led by Michigan Homeland Security experts.
3.
A day-long workshop, Human Trafficking: Victim Identification and Response, led by Polaris Project for 180 social workers and emergency room staff, providing critical information on contemporary forms of human trafficking and practices for assessing and assisting victims.

Community Listening Sessions on Women’s Economic Security In addition to creating a report on the threats to women’s economic security in our area, The Women’s Fund wanted to hear directly from members of the community to gather feedback and understand the issue in depth. In the spring of 2012 The Women’s Fund hosted four listening sessions to seek input on two questions: (1) what is economic security; and (2) what are
the challenges to women’s economic security in Greater Birmingham? More than 80 service providers, foundations, corporations, and community members provided perspective and insight, informing our investments for years to come.

grantmaker The Women’s Fund supports nonprofit agencies and community programs that improve life for all women and girls. The Women’s Fund takes a leadership role to give women the confidence, the financial knowledge, and the needed protection to move away from being a victim of abuse and poverty into economic independence and safety.
Why I joined the Legacy Circle My passion for The Women’s Fund comes from what I have learned about work and parenting in my own life. I have had every advantage one could ask for, and I find raising

We know our grants work. Every grant dollar given in 2011 resulted in a 10-fold increase in income and savings for low-income women. The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham provided $80,000 in grants in 2011 to 7 local agencies to increase women’s economic security. By the close of 2012,
those $80,000 in grants had turned into $981,157 in increased income and savings for low income women and their children. Your gifts to The Women’s Fund helped 2,369 women and 794 children, offering programs that provided financial coaching, vocational training, tax refund services, and matched saving incentives.

grantmaker Success Stories: Just what do your dollars pay for? Here are a few examples: The Central Alabama Women’s Business Center (CAWBC) offered a Women’s Business Opportunity Project thanks to funding from The Women’s Fund—and that program allowed Bridgette Bennett to launch her company (www.bennettfs.net). She completed financial advising classes and passed her licensing exam. She and her daughter are now well on their way to financial security. When Sarah was an inmate at the Montgomery Women’s Facility, she participated in a TWF-funded “Lifestyles 360” class by Aid to Inmate Mothers. The class prepares incarcerated women for employment through job training and financial education. When Sarah was released in 2012, Lifestyles 360 helped her secure a stable job at a local restaurant — keeping her from re-entering the cycle of poverty, crime, and incarceration. Shunte is a single mother working two jobs. She earns $10.17/hour as a mailroom clerk and $8.50/hour at Toys R Us. Her main job provides just enough to pay the bills and her second job allows her to save a little. She visited an Impact Alabama SaveFirst tax site in Birmingham’s West End Community. Impact Alabama’s SaveNow WinLater program, funded in part by The Women’s Fund, helped Shunte invest in a $100 savings bond for her daughter.

Preventing Homicides from Domestic Incidents With help from donors like you, TWF awarded $21,276 to Jefferson County Coordinated Community Response (CCR) in partnership with Verizon Wireless Hopeline Program to fund the Lethality Assessment Program, targeted at reducing deaths due to domestic violence. The Lethality Assessment Program (LAP) is managed by the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence
and CCR, working jointly with District Attorney Brandon Falls Jefferson County, Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper, and the YWCA. The program gives officers a tool to help assess homicide risk at the scene with victims and offer immediate access via phone to a domestic violence crisis worker. Verizon Wireless provided 50 cell phones to the Birmingham Police Department through its HopeLine program to be used to connect victims with local resources.

catalyst We advocate for positive social change at the highest levels. We empower women to create positive social change for women and girls. Collaboration Institute: Partnerships for TwoGeneration Approach to Poverty No one single organization can provide the solution for moving women into greater economic security. That goal requires us to address education and skills training needs and provide access to affordable childcare and mentors. It means bringing agencies that work with women and children together for a lasting solution.
18 | Annual Report 2012
Collaboration Institute is a groundbreaking initiative to align multiple sectors—nonprofits, government, and private interests—to design and adopt innovative, two-generation approaches that serve both low-income women and their children simultaneously. By providing wrap-around services targeting higher wage jobs, we believe we can build a responsive workforce development pipeline and achieve living incomes.
