CONCEPT

STRUCTURE

THE SPINNING COLUMNS TORUS WITHIN TORUS THE 4 STORIES LIBRARY MAINLY CONSISTS OF FOUR LARGE TORUSES ON WITHIN ANOTHER TO REPRESENT A 4D SPHERE BY A 3D STRUCTURE. THE LINEAR GEOMETRIES GO THROUGH THE WHOLE BUILDING, THE COLUMNS DANCE FOR VISITORS. THE LIBRARY ITSELF IS AN EXHIBITION, IT PERFORMS ITSELF TO EVERYBODY. TWO TYPES OF MATERIALS HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO THE FLOOR POLISHED CONCRETE AND TOUGHENED GLASS, WHICH IS ABLE TO PRODIVE A COMPREHENSIVE VIEW OF THE TWISTING COLUMNS IN THE CENTER TO VISITORS.

TOP FLOOR HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO BE ORGANISED AS CHILDCARE CENTER. THE LEVEL HAS BOTH INDOOR AND OUTDOOR AREA FOR CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND. EVERYONE COULD HAVE THE NICEST VIEW FROM NO MATTER WHICH CORNER YOU ARE STANDING AT. IT IS AIMED TO MOTIVATE EARLY AGE CHILDREN TO QUESTION ABOUT WHAT THESE DANCING COLUMNS ARE AND WHAT THEY THINK THEY MIGHT REPRESENT. IT IS TO ENCOURGE CHILDREN’S IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY

ARCHITECTURE IS NOT JUST A METHOD OF BUILDING SOMETHING INTO A USABLE FORM BUT AN ARTWORK INFLUENCING THE WHOLE URBAN CANVAS. BUILDING NOT AS JUST A BLOCK SITTING IN A PERFECT POSITION WITH CERTAIN BOUNDARIES BUT AS A DYNAMIC FIELD ENGAGING AND INTERACTING WITH CONTEXT. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION NOT AS A PRIVATE SOURCE CENTER BUT A PUBLIC BRIDGE MERGING DIFFERENT CULTURES, DIFFERENT KNOWLEDGE AND SUBJECTIVE THOUGHTS IN A DIFFERENT TIME PERIOD. IT IS A SPACE OF COMPATIBLE DIVERSITY. LOCATED AT THE START OF LYGON STREET SURROUNDED BY A HIGHLY ACTIVE DISTRICT POSSESS GREAT DEVELOPMENT OPPOTUNITIES. THE PROJECT INCLUDES THE MIXED USE OF RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL FACILITIES BY PROVIDING RETAIL, ART GALLERY AND COMMUNUAL SPACES TO THE PUBLIC WHILE CAR PARKS, COMPUTER LAB, PRIVATE STUDY SPACES AND ACCOMONDATIONS FOR TENANCIES. VISITORS AND RESIDENTS ARE BENEFIT FROM THE ECO SUSTANABLE DESIGN, COMPREHENSIVE FUNCTIONALITIES SUPPLYING, BROAD RANGE OF VIEWS INSIDE THE BUILDING TOWARDS MELBOURNE CBD. PUBLIC ART GALLERY WITH AN EXTERNAL ARCH WALK PATH WHICH NOT ONLY PROVIDING VIEWS FOR BOTH IN AND OUT, BLENDING THE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR, BUT ALSO A SIGNIFICANT ELEMENT ENGAGING WITH THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AS THE BUILDING IS SURROUNDED BY TRADITIONAL STYLE HOUSING OR HERITAGES. EXISTING VEGETATIONS WILL BE MAINTAINED AND ALLOW OCCUPANTS IN THE WEST FACING TERRACES TO INTERACT WITH THE GREENS. LANDSCAPING OPEN AREAS ON BOTH GROUND AND TOP LEVEL ARE ENABLE FOR INNER COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES. THE EAGER STUDENT, THE LEISURE HABITANTS, THE CITIZEN PILGRIM AND THE CURIOUS TOURIST WILL ALL FIND A SPACE THAT MEETS THEIR NEEDS. THE PROPOSED DESIGN WILL BECOME ONE OF THE ICONIC BUILDINGS OF RMIT UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY CAMPUS AND REPRESENTING THE LEADERSHIP AND NATIONAL IDENTITY OF RMIT. IT WILL BE AN INTELLECTUAL, MULTIFUCTIONAL AND CULTURAL CENTER WITH A PRIMARY GOAL OF REFLECTING THE DEVELOPMENT AND ACHIEVEMENT, THE CHANGE OF RMIT ON ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN.
