Project assignment

renovating the village

Theme of the class

Creating cultural complex by renovating the vacant lots and deserted houses Seongbukdong * is extremely separated by the main street, poor and rich on the other side. As against the active life of the northern side of the main street, a large number of people have left. Numerous spots where houses were demolished are a striking contrast from what is happening on the bright side, giving us the impression of grey cement. All the classes in the 4th year students of bachelor’s degree made a plan to renovate this village, having different goals respectively. Our class’s goal is to make this place breathe by restoring the identity of Seongbukdong where abundant culture used to live. *dong : One of regional units of South Korea

prologue

As the village was located on the northern outside of castle in Joseon Dynasty period (1392~1910), it was named Seongbuk which means northern outskirts of the palace. Stacked traces of time have flown till now, which coexist with each other. We read the stories of our time in Seongbukdong. Seongbuk dong is a symbolic place which reflects issues problems occurring these days, on the current axis of time and space. *dong : One of regional units of South Korea

This site has shown the extreme ploarization of wealth. Lots of houses were deserted and residents have left the unwealthy hillside village. Purpose

Our class has a plan to create cultural village by renovating the vacant lots and deserted houses. We will achieve our goal through bringing back the history of Seongbukdong. People have left, but visitors will come back. After then, artists, writers or cooks who do not have enough money to have a workshop can be gathered into this site. Also, They will be able to show their outcomes for the public in this place. I am responsible for the pottery gallery

The pottery gallery

Main street

A pottery gallery

This place had a particular soil and using that, people in the past had special pottery making methods. Seongbukdong was a centre of Korean pottery culture. But after numerous wars, it no longer exists. I decided to design a pottery gallery here where people no longer visit. If we want to feel the pottery, we must know the making process and touch the soil, raw making material of a pottery, with our bare hands. In this vacant lot, I will design a gallery where we can feel the pottery and also touch the soil.

The pottery is a struggle with soil, water and fire.

Potter let soil that has been enduring for a long time meet water and makes pottery using his hands. Lastly, he gives the pottery over to a strong fire. Now, what the potter have to do is just staring at the fire. I will think space as a pottery and put the light here which means lightening Seongbukdong where was filled with shadow.

Fill the space with water I place the pond there. The pond reflects the appearance of Seongbukdong. Here, there are features of houses, trees, and palace walls. The light in the pond makes Seongbukdong warm which was cold and deserted in the past.

I show the depth of Seongbukdong history through geological stratum. The soil making stratum becomes the wall in the basement.

Ground floor plan Just like we need a vacant pottery to fill the tee, I empty the site in order to put the appearance of Seonbukdong and to put the warm light into the space. I make the pond on this empty site. The pond reflects all things that exist in Seongbukdong and its light moves underground into space.

Basement floor plan The light that goes through from the pond to the basement moves from the ground to the wall as the passage of time in exhibition-1 area. The light in exhibition-2 area illuminates just one place sincerely like a fire. After sunset, the light will disappear like a fading fire that ends its life. The wall in the underground space is the stratum. The light of water and fire exists in this soil stratum which covers the space. The space itself becomes the pottery.

Entrance-1 on the pond The pond which is located on the ground is lightened by sunlight. The water in the pond uses its characters such as reflection, tension, circulation and reads all of the stories of Seongbukdong that the light contains. Finally, the stories transfer from the entrance to the basement.

Entrance-2 in the bamboo garden When the wind blows from the hill, we hear the leaves rustle and smell the scent. The wind will carry these feelings to the basement floor.

Hall Entering the space of soil through entrance-2, water and fire live against each other. These are being at the same space due to the soil. The soil that gains life by water and fire feels itself to be changed as a pottery. It stands uprightly and feels the flexible curves. The soil creates vacant space that is filled with silence and waits until it is filled with something else.

Exhibition areas The light of water goes through the space of soil and transforms it. And then, The fire breathes life to the soil constantly which is facing water.
