Emphasizing Healthy Habits symposium on boys’ health
Students and faculty enjoyed a break in the midwinter routine January 26 and 27, when three experts came to campus for Woodberry’s 125th anniversary Symposium on Boys’ Health. The assembly and workshops were designed to help boys improve their academic, social, and athletic performance and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Tiger Day a Roaring Success plenty of orange-and-black spirit
The 125th day of school — February 11 — was set aside to celebrate everything it means to be a Tiger. Boys took a day off from wearing a collared shirt by putting on a special 125th anniversary t-shirt to get ready for a day of roaring pride and school spirit. The day started with hot donuts and beverages from the Carpe Donut truck. Then, each resident of Lower Turner won a Fir Tree snack bar gift certificate from the assistant dean of students for having the cleanest dorm on campus. Many boys took a few moments out of their day to thank the alumni who support Woodberry by writing 150 thank you notes. The afternoon saw dozens turn out for the sealing and dedication of a time capsule containing over one hundred items; it will be opened in 2064. In the evening, each dorm put forward a contestant for a knockout basketball game at halftime of the JV and varsity basketball games. Everyone enjoyed a dinner catered by Barbeque Exchange to finish the day.
Guest speakers were Adam J. Cox, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, researcher, and author of Boys of Few Words: Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect; Damian Martinez of the Taylor Hooton Foundation, which spreads awareness of the dangers of using steroids and other appearance and performance enhancing drugs (APEDs); and W. Christopher Winter, MD, medical director of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Sleep Medicine Center and a consultant to several professional sports teams. The talks let students give feedback about what it's like to be a boy today, learn about the risks of supplements, and find out how sleeping well can improve their performance in school and athletics.
Families and alumni got involved, too! They shared their own photos depicting Tiger spirit and followed the day’s fun on the Woodberry Forest School Facebook page and Instagram.
