Frequently Asked Questions Will my family qualify for assistance?
Do I need to apply for tuition assistance each year?
What types of assistance are available? Woodberry offers tuition assistance in the form of grants, not loans. These grants are gifts from our endowed funds to ensure that Woodberry is accessible to all qualified applicants. Woodberry does not offer merit-based scholarships.
Tuition assistance at Woodberry Forest is need-based, and every family is encouraged to apply. Eligibility depends on numerous factors, including income, assets, parents’ age, other financial obligations, and the number of dependents a family has. Finances should never deter a family from applying to Woodberry.
Woodberry is committed to enrolling boys of character who will be made better by their time here, and who in turn will make our community better. We welcome students regardless of their family’s financial situation and offer tuition assistance because we believe that bringing together boys with a wide range of backgrounds and points of view is essential to providing them with what they need for their future. We meet 100 percent of a family’s demonstrated need and do so solely through grants. Unlike some tuition assistance programs at the college level, these grants are not to be paid back, but are a gift from our community to make Woodberry more accessible to everyone.
Our commitment to tuition assistance stretches back more than ninety years, when the school first established need-based scholarships to help families impacted by the Great Depression. Our pledge to ensure every deserving boy can attend Woodberry is deeply personal to me, because my father, a minister in west Texas, could not afford the full cost of tuition when I attended Woodberry. Just as the school invested in me, so too will we invest in your son.
I understand that along with applying to Woodberry, navigating the tuition assistance process can be intimidating. We are here to help, and I hope you will call or email the admission team with any questions you may have about the application process.
HeadmasterSincerely,
Byron Hulsey ’86
