Woodberry Cup Heats Up Teams solve murder mystery
Woodberry Cup teams learned of an imaginary crime on the Woodberry Forest School campus, one they could solve by participating in a wide variety of challenges prepared by faculty members. Teams divided into small groups to earn clues by tackling tasks like playing chess against teacher Brent Cirves, accurately casting a fly-fishing rod, rescuing the school chaplain after he “collapsed” at the pulpit, or playing cornhole while wearing vision-distorting goggles. Everyone solved the mystery in under an hour and a half. Red’s Raiders, however, did it the fastest and emerged as the day’s big champions.

The Woodberry Cup is a new tradition that challenges teams of both students and faculty to a year of competition in athletics, academics, arts, and service. The winning team at the end of the year claims the cup.

Athletic Commitments ten seniors sign letters of intent
Many student-athletes don’t leave the playing field behind when they graduate. And signing a letter of intent to play college sports is a highlight in a Tiger’s life. But whether or not Woodberry boys go on to play in college, they all learn the same lesson: Effort in sports is a matter of character rather than reward; it is a means to an end and not an end in itself. Here are this year’s committed athletes, from left to right: Felix Culmer • Wagner College • football | Michael Davenport • Virginia Tech • track | Ryan Grady • United States Military Academy at West Point • football | Peter Knade • University of Maryland • golf | Patrick McDonald • University of Notre Dame • baseball | Logi Portugal • Bryant University • football Zach Roderick • Campbell University • football | Nick Switzer • University of Virginia • swimming | Roy Toston • Davidson College • wrestling Clark Yarbrough • Stanford University • football

7:15 am wake up I wake up, shower, and have a breakfast of chocolate milk, cereal, and eggs in the Terry Dining Hall.
8:45 am
10:15 am
Free period I stay in Mr. Dowell’s room to do his homework since he’s there to help me if I need it. If I missed breakfast, I go to the Fir Tree Snack Bar for a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel and some cheese fries.
French IV with Mr. Huber Mr. Huber was a Woodberry boy himself, and he really knows how boys learn. Just being in his classroom, with all the posters of French art, is a learning experience.
Calculus with Mr. Dowell Our teacher knows something about nearly everything, and he makes calculus fun. If we finish going over homework and new material, we sometimes look up something interesting or check the weather for the day.

1:00 Pm
Honors Statistics with Mr. Holmes He’s always ready to share a story and he comes up with creative word problems about sports or maybe a factory that makes lightsabers.
10:15 AM
English with Mr. Blain I’m taking the senior English course, War and Peace. Right now we are reading a 700page book called The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. It is the best book I’ve read at Woodberry.
Lunch in Terry Dining Hall I usually sit with my best friends, but if they aren’t there, I know everyone in my class really well. We all get along.

Mack Daniels, a third former (freshman) from Easton, Maryland, sings in the Chapel Choir, wrestles at 113 pounds on varsity, played Bengal football, and plans to play lacrosse this spring. He chose Woodberry because he knew the school would give him academic opportunities and a chance to learn values that would stay with him for life. What helped you adjust to boarding school life? At first, I missed seeing my family everyday. But just knowing that the benefits of coming to Woodberry would make it all worth it helped me get through the early days. What is something new you’ve tried here? I had never sung in a choir before, but when I was here for Invite Back Weekend, I heard the Dozen sing Amici and Cry Me a River and decided to join the choir. I enjoy it and want to join my church choir back home.

When did you first feel like you were a real Woodberry boy? I remember that as we were leaving chapel at the end of the Christmas candlelight service right before winter break, Dr. Smith told our parents, “Take care of our boys and bring them back safely.” When he called us “our boys,” I knew I was really part of the school.

Diego is a prefect, one of Woodberry's most respected student leaders who are charged with maintaining the honor system. He lives on and leads Lower Turner Hall, a third-form dormitory.
3:45 Pm Play practice in Walker Fine Arts Center My character in Spamalot, a show based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, is called Sir NotAppearing-in-this-Show. This is my first time on stage, and even though I only have one line, I’ve been surprised at how challenging it is to learn all the songs and dances and stay in character the whole time.
Government with Dr. Jordan With it being an election year, we spend about ten minutes a day talking about the candidates and debating the issues. I’ve really enjoyed the politicians who have visited our class and taking a trip to the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond.
Seated Dinner at Mr. Heil's table It’s a nice change of pace talking about Disney movies with his young daughters and getting to know guys from other grades.
1:45 pm
6:15 pm
8:45 Pm free time If I finish my homework, I go to the Dick Gym to play basketball or even play some indoor tennis in the Barbee Center when the weather is bad.
7:00 Pm After dinner If I don’t have a meeting for The Oracle (student newspaper) or Ropes Course, I usually start my homework early.
Study hall I like to study in Reynolds Computer Lab. It’s quiet with plenty of room to work.

Kelly Lonergan admits he was one of those kids always doodling in class. Now, as head of the visual arts department, making art isn’t just a pastime; it’s his full-time job. Kelly will next exhibit his paintings, drawings, and sculpture at the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville in April, 2016. He and his wife, Liz, who works in Woodberry’s William H. White Jr. Library, are the parents of two Woodberry grads and live on campus with their two dogs and two cats. What classes do you teach? I teach all the visual arts offerings: Intro to Visual Art, Intermediate Studio Art, Honors Studio Art, Honors Independent Study in Studio Art, and Honors Art History. How does being a working artist help you be a good teacher? The students watch me and learn from me; I watch them and learn from them. How do you think making art helps boys prepare for their future? To make art, boys need an idea and an unwavering commitment to that idea. I enjoy getting to know each of my students as I help them create artwork out of their ideas. I teach them good techniques and provide them with the paint, paper, ink, clay, and tools they need. Whether or not they grow up to become artists, they’ll still need creativity, dedication, and imagination in all their future endeavors.
