he next generation of jazz greats took center stage at this year’s WBGO’s Champions of Jazz Gala, which honored two hometown heroes: Cephas Bowles, WBGO’s chief executive of twenty years, and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, which has spurred a renaissance of jazz education in the city of Newark. From the reception, which featured a group of performer’s from nearby Montclair, NJ’s Jazz House Kids, to the performance and the dance party, the theme of education and Newark ran throughout the event. “We’re very proud of what’s going on right here in Newark,” said Tom Carter, the Monk Institute’s president, as he

piano, Joseph Quiles on bass and Derek Fykes on drums, were joined by tenor saxophonist and educator Don Braden to open the concert with a rousing version of Charlie Parker’s “Billie’s Bounce.” The teens participate in The Monk Institute’s jazz workshops at Arts High, and in the Brick City Jazz Orchestra, an all-city ensemble created by the Institute and NJPAC, with support from the Prudential Foundation. Arts High is the nation’s oldest performing arts high school, whose alumni include Sarah Vaughan and Wayne Shorter. “We’ve had a long partnership,” said Carter, thanking the station for its early support of the Institute’s International Jazz Competition, now in its twenty-seventh year. “In the very early years, it was WBGO’s Becca Pulliam and JazzSet that helped us expose this competition to the world.” Melissa Aldana, the 24-year-old tenor saxophonist from Chile who won this year’s Monk award, performed a dazzling version of Thelonious Monk’s “Friday The Thirteenth” with Michael Wolff on piano, Darryl Johns on bass and Ray Vega on trumpet. Wolff leaned in and listened attentively as he followed Aldana’s daring harmonic cues.

Vocalist Gretchen Parlato, who won the Monk competition in 2004, was joined by pianist Kenny Barron for intimate, heartrending renditions of Julie Styne’s “I Fall In Love Too Easily” and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Chega de Saudade.” She then welcomed the Prudential Foundation’s vice president Shané Harris to the stage, and thanked her for Prudential’s enduring support of jazz education. Harris congratulated Bowles, who has been on medical leave as he prepares to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Bowles attended the concert via video conference. “Cephas led WBGO to become the number one jazz broadcaster across the nation and around the world,” said Harris. “He is very special to the broader Newark community.” Harris also introduced the evening’s surprise guest — sportscaster Bob Costas, a friend of Cephas since both worked at Syracuse University’s campus radio station as undergraduates in the early 1970s — who joined the festivities via video. “Even then, I was struck by Cephas,” said Costas. “He had a sophisticated cont’d on page 6

Playdate with MATT WILSON New Program Airs February 4

BY ALEX ARIFF

Photo: M. Jackson

Beginning on February 4, WBGO will broadcast a new program, produced by WBGO and hosted by drummer, composer and one of the genre’s biggest personalities: Matt Wilson. The program will focus on some of WBGO’s most iconic archival live performance recordings. WBGO’s Alex Ariff sat down with “M@” to talk about the new show and his many collaborations. Ariff: You’re making your radio host debut on WBGO in February with Playdate with Matt Wilson. What excites you most about working in this new medium? Wilson: I love new adventures and it suits me quite well because I love music and I love to talk! Ariff: Did you grow up with the radio on? Who are some of your radio heroes? Wilson: I always had the radio on and today I am still a big radio fan. I love that someone else is choosing the music and enlightening my day. I learn so much about music and musicians through radio and New York City, especially WBGO, boasts so many fine radio shows. I always loved hearing Dr. Billy Taylor both on the radio and television, he is definitely an inspiration for this new venture!

Ariff: Playdate is a way of reliving and recognizing great performances. What is it about a live jazz performance that’s different than a studio session? What are some highlights we should look forward to? Wilson: Jazz is “music allowed in the moment” so live performances capture it all without the ability to repair. I guess these broadcasts represent best the artistry, honesty and purity of the common ground of sound the musicians welcomed at that given moment. Highlights? The whole show is a treasury of highlights to me. All of the performances are incredible! Ariff: A lot of the recordings in Playdate come from inside the haunts of many historic NYC jazz clubs: Sweet Basil, The Jazz Forum, The Public Theater, The Village Gate. Do you have any memories associated with visiting these spaces? Wilson: I played my first ever weeklong engagement in NYC at Sweet Basil’s with Dewey Redman in spring 1995, so that club is special. I played the Top of the Gate with John Medeski a few times before moving to NYC in 1992. The club, unfortunately, closed soon after my arrival here. Ariff: What project are you bringing to Jazz www.wbgo.org

on the Mountain at Mohonk Mountain House this year? What do you like about playing in the Catskills? Wilson: I am actually just enjoying being a sideman this year though I am collaborating with the fine young saxophonist and teaching artist, Oran Etkin, for a Jazz for Kids concert which, in reality, is for everyone, right? We are all kids! Ariff: You have so many projects going on! The idea of leading a band is different for every bandleader. Describe your process? You’re a family man; can you compare parenting to managing a band? Wilson: My concept is quite simple, I choose people I love to play with, pick the songs and just let them play. I trust them, they know what to do. It is special to have the musicians that I surround myself with to be part of my family and I am grateful for their presence in my life. The gratifying highlight for me, of jazz, is the teamwork, the blending of sounds and feelings. Ariff: Your quartet with Kirk Knuffke, Jeff Lederer, and Chris Lightcap has adopted a pianist, John Medeski for the new cd, The Gathering Call. You two go back to working

together in the Either/Orchestra in Boston, MA. Is that where you met? What prompted bringing him back into the fold? Wilson: We met soon after I moved to Boston and played together a lot, most notably with the Either/Orchestra. We had an E/O 25th Anniversary show a few years ago and we both talked about trying to do more playing together. I thought it would be exciting to see how he would react with the MWQ, a band that has no chordal instrument. It was an incredible collaboration, both sonically and spiritually. We are looking forward to the 11 concerts we are doing with John, including Jan. 30-Feb. 2 at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Ariff: The holidays just wrapped up and your Christmas Tree-O was out on the road! What do you love most about revisiting this material? Wilson: I adore seeing what can emerge from the ordinary, everyone knows these songs. It is comparable to a photographer who captures everyday images that open up our senses to what is present. Think of the Christmas Tree-O as an ever changing sonic Christmas card.

sense of the music’s history, and a sense that went beyond the moment, and that carries on to today.” Dorthaan Kirk, whose Kids Jazz series at WBGO celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, presented the award to Linda Bowles, Cephas’s wife. “WBGO is a treasure that is helping to maintain jazz,” said Bowles, as she conveyed his thanks to past and present volunteers, board members and employees, and accepted the award on his behalf. “Those are the people that help make a difference in making our world a better place with music,” she said. Linda also thanked Cephas’s niece and bone marrow donor Candace Rutherford, and older brother Carey, who were in attendance. To close out the concert, bassist Christian McBride led his Inside Straight band through a blazing set with Christian Sands on piano, Warren Wolf on vibes, Jaleel Shaw on alto sax, and Carl Allen on drums. WBGO’s Josh Jackson invited guests to stick around for a party in the lobby, hosted by disc jockey Felix Hernandez, who spun his signature mix of classic soul for enthusiastic dancers (including one dancer on stilts!) well into the night. “The Rhythm Revue dance party is a great workout — so stay tuned for dessert, then feel free to dance it off!” he said. Our next WBGO Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 6pm. The meeting will be held at WBGO, 54 Park Place, Newark, NJ 07102. This meeting is open to the public.

Bird with Strings In 1949, Charlie Parker envisioned an album that would link jazz to pop and influence artists to come. His legendary venture with strings has done just that. Parker with Strings set his searching solos against a lush string quartet. Once again, our weekend travelers will stay at the newly updated Newport Hotel & Marina, where they can enjoy a Friday night welcome reception and then head off on the WBGO bus for an evening of great jazz at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. For the day time performances at Fort Adams State Park, hop aboard the ferry adjacent to the hotel with the beautiful Narragansett Bay as a backdrop. Also included for the weekend trip, is a bon voyage breakfast on Monday. Three and four night weekend packages are available starting January 21. If music lovers prefer to enjoy the festival but not stay the weekend, WBGO is again offering day trips to the Newport Jazz Festival from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Newark and Boston. One day excursions include round-trip bus transportation from the aforementioned cities to the festival gate, admission to the festival and on site access to the WBGO shade tent. Buses will be equipped with WiFi, restroom and reclining bucket seats. Robert Glasper, Darcy James Argue, Miguel Zenon and Trombone Shorty are the first artists to be announced for the 2014 festival.
