very Tuesday evening on WBGO, listeners enjoy Awilda Rivera’s Latin Jazz Cruise on the air. WBGO wanted to bring this show to life with an actual Latin jazz cruise featuring one of today’s most exciting performers, Pedrito Martinez. Join Maria Hinojosa, another familiar voice heard hosting Latino USA Saturdays at 6am on WBGO, aboard Spirit of New York for a fun mix of dining, dancing, entertainment and skyline views during this party on the Hudson River supporting WBGO. Guests will be certain to move to the beat, as The Pedrito Martinez Group has its roots planted firmly in the AfroCuban Rumba tradition and in the bata rhythms and vocal chants of the music of Yoruba and Santeria. Ben Ratliff summed it up aptly for the New York

Times calling it, “complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk.” Departing from Chelsea Piers, Pier 61 on Manhattan’s West Side, guests of the two-hour dinner and dance cruises aboard The Spirit of New York will delight in the views of New York Harbor during the sunset cruise (early sailing) or the city lights on the moon light cruise (later sailing). The ship boats three climate-controlled interior decks with panoramic windows, an open-air rooftop deck, spacious dance floors, full service bars* and a menu* created by celebrity chef Eric LeVine. With great music, multiple decks and an exciting host, there will be ample opportunity to enjoy the music, the company and the atmosphere all while supporting WBGO.

Jazz from the Archives A 35 Year Partnership Between Two Newark Institutions

BY DAN MORGENSTERN

Ed Berger and Benny Carter (JFTA’s first guest) in 1979

S

hortly after WBGO made its debut in 1979, the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University was visited by Al Pryor, the station’s first program director (now Executive V.P. of Artist & Repertoire at Mack Avenue Records). Since the newborn station had no record library, he suggested that the Institute might lend it some albums from its huge collection. Though this was against our non-circulating rules, we agreed. Each week, Rhonda Hamilton, who has had presence on WBGO for its entire 35 years, would borrow an armload of LPs, and then exchange it for another. A few months later, Pryor invited us to do a weekly show, dubbed Jazz from the Archives. Initially, it was a three-hour program, free-form rather than focused on a single topic, aired on Sundays and was re-broadcast on Mondays. The origi-

nal trio of hosts, Ed Berger, Dan Morgenstern and Vincent Pelote, is still on board 35 years later, augmented by a changing cast of other Institute staffers and associates. In those early days, technical conditions were somewhat primitive. Studio and bathroom being on the same floor, the latter contained prominent warnings not to flush when the red light was on, but hardly a taping went by without at least one intrusion during a mic break from the never caught “Mad Flusher.” As the station matured, our share of weekly programming went from six to two hours, and the shows became more sophisticated; only Morgenstern had previous radio experience. Many aspects of jazz history, always approached as a continuum rather than limited to the past, were illuminated, with shows often enhanced by guests.

Benny Carter, with whom Beger had a special relationship, as biographer, road manager and record producer, was a frequent visitor. Others from a long list, too many alas no longer with us, have included Ray Bryant, Doc Cheatham, Milt Hinton, Frank Wess, Phil Woods, Jimmy Heath, Joe Wilder, Dizzy Reece, Remo Palmier, George Duvivier, Gil Fuller, Kenny Davern, Howard Alden, Benny Waters, Daryl Sherman, Grachan Moncur III, Ahmed Abdul-Malik and Mundell Lowe. Loren Schoenberg, now Artistic Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, did a fascinating multi-part interview with Jean Bach, creator of the Great Day in Harlem documentary. Many authors of books on jazz have guested; among them Todd Bryant Weeks, biographer of the great trumpeter-singer Hot Lips Page, who brought with him Page’s son (a retired judge) and grandson (a young lawyer), to the delight of Morgenstern, who had known and idolized Page. Annual tributes to Louis Armstrong, on both his birthdays, July 4 (when he celebrated) and August 4 (historically researched birthdate), have long been a regular feature. And musician-educator Bill Kirchner has lent special insight to the work of modern masters, while young Joe Peterson brings a bassist’s perspective to that instrument’s legacy.

www.wbgo.org

Ongoing treatments of the works of individual musicians have included Pelote’s Adventures in Hendersonia and Morgenstern’s Adventures in Ellingtonia, while the late John Clement lent his inimitable British accent and special delivery to his idol Johnny Hodges, guitarist Tiny Grimes, and his Annual Honking, Shouting, and Screaming Rock and Roll and Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Show, (with a pass from host of WBGO’s Portraits in Blue, Bob Porter). Humor has also been an ingredient in the program’s annual Christmas Special, currently in the hands of Pelote, who was long partnered by late host, Annie Kuebler. When the program was still in its two-hour frame, the holiday show was a team effort, to which the station management memorably contributed a special enhancement, spiked eggnog, though we would wrap with Lionel Hampton’s “Gin for Christmas.” Ah, memories! Thus the relationship between two Newark jazz landmarks, what would become the greatest of jazz radio stations and what is the largest library and archive of jazz materials anywhere, goes back a very long way. The aim of Jazz from the Archives has always been to present the rich recorded history of the music in a manner that lets it speak for itself, at times with welcome help from its makers. We hope our listeners have enjoyed the ride. We certainly have!
