I was not aware there are at least nine accepted start and end dates for summer in the Northern Hemisphere, were you? Bill Barnhart advises how to clean your air conditioner’s compressor on page 16, a practical article, hopefully not too late to be of help.

Resident Marie Evans contributed a fitting poem penned about the season on page 37.

August brings us the annual National Night Out celebration, “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” You will find articles about that event as well as about Neighborhood Watch and its patrols, provided by Bob Hall and Debby Hickey on pages 34 and 35. Several knowledgeable and experienced residents collaborated with local law enforcement professionals to put together a useful set of safety habit recommendations for you on page 35.

ummertime and the livin’ is easy…” is the first lyric that popped into my mind when thinking about the songs of summer. Of course, there are many other songs the word “summer” might bring to mind – some about surfing, many about love, several about baseball, more about seasons changing.

Whatever your favorite summer song, I hope you are humming it as you enjoy the last full month of the season.

he heat is on and it looks like we’re in for a long hot summer so you might want to plan to participate in a lot of the activities and events going on at the Clubhouse.

We’ve had a couple of new groups form – Bridge Groupies and Photography — which may be of interest to you. Take a look at the list of WOA Groups and Clubs on page 6. I’m sure you’ll find one or two that pique your interest.

The resident painters’ art show is August 1. You’ll see beautiful artwork displayed by talented resident artists, some of whom had never painted before coming to Woodbridge and Dodie Miller, WOA Activities Director attending classes. You’ll enjoy the afternoon viewing their paintings and chatting with the artists.

National Night Out is August 4 – our ninth year participating and gathering in neighborhood groups to barbecue, potluck and socialize.

Representatives of local police and fire departments visit throughout the evening. The next event will be the Cowboy Songs Sing Along featuring the Strummin’ Wonders Ukulele group. Carla Marquardt has been working with her group to bring you an evening of songs you’ll recognize and you’ll soon be singing along.

The month of August is the perfect time for a “Hot August Nights Dance” to get out of the hot weather again. I know many will recognize Jerry Sauceda who sounds like a full band when he performs. You’ll enjoy this DJ’s sounds

throughout the evening. We’ll also feature food and we know you’ll enjoy this night of dancing!

Larry Silver will perform for us for the first time with his Hypno-Larryous show. As mentioned on the flyer, we are in for a lot of laughs and some hilarious entertainment. It will be a fun, informative and interactive experience, complete with audience participation. I’m told we’ll all be “howling with laughter.” I hope to see you there.

We are coming up on our third Happy Hour of the 2015 “Happy Hour Series.” “Natalia” will provide dance music on the patio.

Come prepared with food, drink and chairs if you’ll be sitting on the lawn around the lake. Otherwise we will once again have tables and chairs on the patio.

his past month was a very busy month at Woodbridge.

We completed three major projects including resurfacing the indoor spa, replacing the yellow carpeted areas inside the Clubhouse and repainting the entry gazebos and all the trellises along Del Webb Boulevard. In addition, all the trellises around the Clubhouse were painted and the wooden entry bridge at Lake Rockwell was stained.

WePaint, an excellent painting contractor out of Stockton who was also responsible for painting the Clubhouse two years ago, completed this project. In addition to WePaint, I want to thank the other contractors, Geremia Pools out of Sacramento and Accent Carpet One from Manteca, for their hard work on the indoor spa and carpeting, respectively.

August will be a very busy month, too, as we get closer to the completion of Liberty Park.

Wheels are in motion to create a maintenance plan for all the amenities within the park.

With new amenities come new maintenance challenges. I have enlisted the help of community members to come up with a proposed budget and scope of work for Liberty Park. The Policy & Procedures Committee is currently working to develop rules for Liberty Park. Most of the rules we have in place for current amenities will suffice.

The chipping course is an area we will be delving into a bit more.

Due to the nature of the amenity, the safety of residents and guests is first and foremost. We also want to ensure the rules will deter any players from chipping golf balls at distances deemed inappropriate or dangerous to

Ramon Rivera, Operations Manager others. The Property & Grounds Committee will be vetting potential companies to inspect all common area walkways for uneven surfaces that cause tripping hazards. Several residents brought this issue to my attention and it is an issue that will be corrected. The safety of residents will always be the highest priority. Property & Grounds has a reputation for delivering when called upon.

I expect this project to be no different.

As we tackle these projects, the community will be in the beginning stages of the board of director election process. On August 3, the WOA will announce the slate of candidates and then, on August 26, all residents will have an opportunity to meet the candidates and ask questions in an informal setting. The opportunity to make a difference in your community is here. I encourage everyone to make the effort to be informed during this process, meet the candidates, ask the tough questions, and make your difference by making your vote an informed one.

Cover Contest!

e will conduct the 2016 Community Directory Cover Art Contest during the month of December. Although the contest is four months away, now is the time to think about your entry!

Since use of the directory spans an entire year, be sure the photographs you take or the artwork you create is “timeless.” In other words, make sure your entry depicts the Woodbridge lifestyle without seasonal clues (no jack-o-lanterns, no Christmas trees, etc.) More detailed information about the contest will be published in the November edition of Woodbridge LIFE.

he Woodbridge portal provides us with a link to access the digital archive of the monthly Woodbridge LIFE newspaper. All you have to do is click on the link, http://issuu.com/woodbridgelife on the portal and you will be able to view the most recent edition of the paper.

The issuu.com website also allows you to “follow” Woodbridge LIFE. What this means is that, once signed up, you will be sent an email notifying you when a new edition of the paper is available online. You won’t have to remember to check the portal and you will have access to online versions of all past editions of Woodbridge LIFE going back to October 2011.

The board also approved a 30-day comment period of our community’s firstever Election Rules, required by the DavisStirling Act that governs homeowner associations (HOAs) like ours. The board hopes to approve these during its August meeting.

The matter of entry fountains possibly being converted to drought-tolerant irrigation with plant landscaping is undergoing more evaluation. WOA Committee Meetings

From the WOA Upcoming Election and Election Rules

he Woodbridge community governing documents were created one year prior to the requirement that mandated community associations to have election rules. California Civil Code Section 5100 requires associations to adopt election rules that address election procedures, secret balloting and who may serve as Inspector of Election. Although we have been operating with this in mind, we felt it was important to create rules. We have been working with the association’s legal counsel to establish election rules for the community. The board of directors will be approving the new rules following the required 30-day comment period in August.

As many of you now realize, self-nomination forms were mailed to every home. Becoming a board member is an educational volunteer opportunity that can be very rewarding. We have over 900 sold lots and the community has experienced huge changes in the past few years. With the sale of over 400 remaining lots, you are going to see more change in the years to come. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me for answers. Relying on others for information does not always guarantee you are getting accurate information. So often an owner may think they have the answer, but the laws change annually and it is often very difficult

Lunch will be at Palo Alto’s Fish Market. The afternoon will be spent on the beautiful Stanford University campus, visiting the Memorial Church Rodin statue collection and Cantor Art Center.

This is an opportunity for all homeowners to meet candidates running for director positions on the WOA board. Each candidate will be at an individual table in an informal setting for homeowners to meet and ask questions one-on-one.

There is also seating on the lawn area around the lake for which you need to bring your own lawn chairs. Tickets for patio and lawn area are $5 per person.

Our developer (Pulte) created a couple of design options for front yards that incorporate drought-tolerant landscaping.

They require the city of Manteca’s approval before incorporating these options into our Design Guidelines document. In a similar manner, Manteca must provide better guidance regarding the use of artificial turf in front yards.

We are awaiting the city’s guidance.

Resident Directors Garry Dudley and Roger Cunning were delighted to host our association’s new attorney, Deon Stein, at a couple of recent Town Hall meetings. It became very clear to everyone who attended these meetings that the board selected an outstanding attorney to represent Woodbridge Owners Association. Mr. Stein stepped through the basics of HOAs and explained who has the responsibilities for the many activities within an HOA. He will be invited back for additional sessions you should plan to attend.

The board of directors welcomes your input and hopes residents attend its meetings. The next scheduled meeting is August 12 at 4 p.m.

here’s something very special about dining at a waterfront restaurant. The maritime atmosphere is so calming that it makes you feel as if you’re on a far-away vacation. Some of you may be surprised to know you can find good waterfront restaurants in Stockton, only a 20-minute drive from Woodbridge.

This article describes five of them. If you need more information, you’ll be glad to know all five have a 209 area code.

The Delta Bistro and Lounge is inside the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel at the downtown marina. After you enter the hotel and walk down a hallway, you are greeted by the restaurant’s cheerful ambience. Bound on one side by the channel and the other by a wide courtyard, the restaurant prides itself on having a menu that includes “All-American” selections and a cocktail menu “to satisfy the most discerning tastes.” Eating at an outdoor table lets you enjoy the famous Delta breeze. When you finish your meal, you can enjoy the breeze a bit longer by relaxing on one of the courtyard’s comfortable lounge chairs. The restaurant is open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. French 25, another first-class waterfront restaurant, is known for its excellent food and atmosphere. Opened in 2013, its menu and décor were inspired by the famous French Quarter neighborhood of New Orleans. Cajun and Creole favorites are its specialties. If you’re seated in the dining room on the main floor, you will feel immersed in the energetic scene of downtown Stockton. Dining at the rooftop venue lets you see the sparkling water below or, depending on your timing, a beautiful sunset. The restaurant is closed on Sundays, but it’s open for lunch Monday through Friday. Dinner is served Monday through Saturday. The location is 110 North El Dorado Street. Nena’s Mexican Restaurant, located in an updated warehouse building, is highly popular with youngsters, the elderly, and everyone in between. It’s one of three Mexican restaurants that won this year’s award from San Joaquin Magazine in its 2015 Best of San Joaquin issue. The main dining area is large and busy, but for a good view of the water and boats, you need to sit on the porch or the patio. Many diners make a long evening of it out there, lingering over good food, drinks and conversation as daylight gives way to starlight. Nena’s is open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is located at 445 West Weber Avenue, #120. You may call 5470217 for more information.

Bob's at the Marina is also a winner. It has a wide patio that overlooks the Delta and even has direct boat access. It’s perfect for eating under a large umbrella while observing people as they get in and out of boats. Or you can just relax by admiring a pleasant view of the water and shoreline. The large burgers and delicious breakfasts are especially renowned at Bob's, which opened for business in 1982. Along with three other restaurants, it won San Joaquin Magazine’s Best of 2015 award in the breakfast category.

In the summer, Bob’s begins serving at 7 a.m. every day and closes at 9 p.m. It’s located at 6639 Embarcadero Drive. The phone number is 957-3279.

Garlic Brothers is next door to Bob’s. It won the San Joaquin Magazine 2015 Best of San Joaquin award in both outdoor dining and happy hour, along with two other restaurants in each of those categories. Its steaks, appetizers and garlic fries are very popular, as are several other menu items. Its waiters are known for being friendly and helpful. The outdoor seating area has a relatively high elevation, thus providing a wide view of the Delta and of boats that move by as gracefully as swans. In fact, this is the area I am most often asked about. Lower back injuries are often caused by a mechanical strain or sprain to the muscles or tendons.

According to Dr. Kaixuan Liu, MD, PhD (an endoscopic spinal surgeon), in a recent article in Max Sport Fitness, “As we get older, our muscles become weaker and can’t hold the bones tight and in alignment.” The resulting spinal instability can cause things like abnormal curvatures of the spine, which further results in narrowing of the disc space or spinal stenosis. Lower back pain can also be caused by arthritis and osteoporosis, which seniors are more inclined to get.

Five common back pain triggers are: • Lack of exercise, which leads to weak or underdeveloped core muscles that help to support the spine.

• Exercising too much.

Listen to your back – if it’s sore, you may be doing too much.

• Being overweight, since as little as 10 pounds of extra weight in your abdominal area can pull the spine out of alignment.

• Sitting too much. If you have a desk job, or if you are sitting and playing cards, be sure to get up every hour or so and walk around a bit.

• Being stressed, which causes muscular tension, causing pain in the lower back.

According to Dr. Liu, most back pain should resolve itself in a matter of weeks, using at-home remedies such as overthe-counter medication and rest.

Liu suggests you seek the help of your doctor if the pain does not go away, if it keeps you up at night or if you have weakness, numbness or pins and needles in your extremities.

hristmas in July, what more is there to say? We had a ball. We made poinsettia pillows and wreaths, painted snowmen on wine bottles, crafted cards that move, sewed a new quilt block and made table toppers. I hope you were there for some, if not all, of the classes.

We slow down a little in August but not much. We had to reschedule the ‘flip flop’ block class to Monday, August 3, at 9 a.m.

Our general meeting is Friday, August 7, at 10 a.m., followed by the MANDATORY Holiday Boutique meeting at 11:30 a.m. I cannot stress enough how important this meeting is for those of you planning to sell at the boutique.

Margo Flannigan’s watercolor class is scheduled for Friday, August 14, at 12:30 p.m. This month the painting is “Lake View,” a mountain and lake scene. If you enjoy watercolors, you must check out Margo’s class.

his month the book club meeting fell on the first day of July, which may account for the fact that we were a small group of four – but small does not mean we were not lively and did not have a fine discussion – we did – and we all enjoyed it. I chose the book The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd who was born in 1913 and grew to adulthood in Japan before returning to his native Scotland.

This is probably why he set this book in Japan with a Scottish heroine. All of us were impressed how the male author was able to write his story from the point of view of a woman; we also liked the fact that the book was written in the first person using the device of

Get out of the hot sun, dig out your cowboy boots, bandana, hat and then sign up at the front desk for the Ukulele Cowboy Concert Tuesday, August 11, at 6:30 p.m. Remember "Happy Trails to You"? She was also a very human heroine and not always sure of her strength or of how she was living – aren't all of us like that at one point or another in our lives?

Our group enthusiastically discussed the heroine who lived in historic times in Japan, including the great earthquake of 1929 that destroyed Tokyo, the Boxer Rebellion in China and the beginning of the Second World War. Her diary chronicled her personal decisions and the sometimes-cataclysmic results of those decisions – especially since she lived in a time when most women were just beginning to realize they had potential beyond the traditional roles of women.

Our meeting in August is the first Wednesday of the month, as always. Our book for August is The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman. I am looking forward to meeting Mrs. Pollifax in this first book of a series of books about this interesting, elderly and adventurous heroine. Ruth Field suggested the book and will present it for discussion.

 WOMEN OF WOODBRIDGE SPEAKER SERIES California Faience: An Arts and Crafts Pottery in Berkeley

irby William Brown, a Woodbridge resident and author of California Faience: Ceramics for Cottages and Castles, will speak to Woodbridge residents September 17, at 4 p.m., as part of the continuing Speaker Series sponsored by the Women of Woodbridge.

California Faience was an important art pottery manufacturer based in Berkeley from 1913 to 1959. It represented a departure from the mass produced pottery of the period in that a great deal of handwork was individually done by its founders, Chauncey Thomas and William Bragdon, in the arts and crafts tradition of the era. The pottery consisted of vases, bowls, other decorative and sculptural objects and a vast array of beautiful tiles.

It was also a studio for hundreds of ceramic artists in the Bay Area. It is best known for the tiles made for Hearst Castle under the direction of Julia Morgan.

Brown, a grandson of founder William Bragdon, will give a personal view of the art and history of the company illustrated with many examples and original photographs and documents. He will also discuss the process of writing and publishing his book.

Cleaning Your A/C Compressor There’s been a lot of need throughout the community recently to have air conditioning systems checked out. Here are a couple of steps you can take to Bill Barnhart improve the functioning of your air conditioning system that don’t require a professional service person.

The A/C compressor is the unit that sits outside the house. It sucks air through the condenser fins on the sides of the unit and cools the Freon® circulating through the line set-up to the unit in the attic. The suction action through the unit deposits dust and other debris onto the condenser fins which reduces their efficiency by blocking the air flow.

On a day with an outside temperature of at least 60 degrees, note the time on your watch and turn your A/C on. Place your hand above the compressor to feel the temperature of the air being sucked through the fins. That air should be quite a bit warmer than the ambient outside temperature. If not, it is a sure sign you need to take the next step. Also at this point, check the temperature of the two tubes going into the bottom of the unit.

The large tube with the insulation around it should be cool and the small one should be warm. Get a sense of how they feel because you need to check them again after cleaning the unit to see if there is any improvement.

bumping against them. If it is a small area, you are likely to be able to straighten them with an old-fashioned blunt table/butter knife. If it is a larger area or you just don’t want to tackle it, make a note to have the serviceperson take care of it the next time you call for regular service.

If you have accomplished the above in less than five minutes since you turned your A/C system off (check your watch), wait until five minutes have elapsed. This is a good rule to follow all the time with your A/C system. The system needs about that amount of time between cycling down and cycling back up to decompress and you will help to extend the life of your system by not manually cycling it (turning it off and then back on) without waiting about five minutes in-between.

With the unit running, wait about 10 minutes (check your watch again) for it to dry the water out of the condenser fins and to fully cycle the Freon® throughout the system. Now place your hand above the air flow out the top. Also, feel the two tubes at the bottom of the unit. If your cleaning has improved the efficiency of your system and the system is not low on Freon®, the air flow should be considerably warmer than the ambient temperature outside and the large tube should be cooler and the small one warmer than before.

These two tests are very basic and will only give you a sense of how well your system is working. Having a professional perform proper maintenance on your system will give you a much more definitive answer to that question, though. At the same time, the professional will do additional maintenance such as cleaning the evaporator inside the unit in your attic which functions to dehumidify the air, cleaning out the condensation lines, lubricating the blower motor, etc.

The first step is to make sure any shrubbery around the compressor is cut back so it does not block the air flow around the sides of the unit. Next, turn your A/C off. Once it stops running, use a hose with a strong spray nozzle to spray-clean the compressor fins on all sides of the unit. Then, lean over the top and do the same procedure, spraying the inside of the fins as well as you can. Try your best not to get too much spray on the fan motor. Finally, spray from the outside one last time.

Oh, I almost forgot, don’t forget to change your filters regularly, especially if you use your system a lot. We live in a dusty area and even if you don’t open up your windows and you have your clean air vent system turned off, the vent tube for that system allows outside dusty air to be sucked into the house and circulated when you have the A/C or heater turned on, thus reducing the normal periods between when you change filters.

 HEALTH Dental Bridge or Dental Implant

N

ot that long ago, if you lost a tooth, your dentist would recommend grinding down the two adjacent teeth and using them as anchors for a three-tooth bridge. Today, we offer an alternative that involves less collateral damage: a single-tooth implant. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, about three million people receive 5.5 million implants each year in the United States, which is growing by an additional 500,000 patients each year. If cases are chosen well, implants are successful 96 to 97 percent of the time. However, despite their growing popularity, there are certain instances in which a dental bridge is a better option than a dental implant. Your dentist would be more than happy to review these considerations to help you make the most appropriate choice between a bridge and an implant.

Amount of bone available to support an implant A sufficient quantity of bone is required to anchor or support the implant. One advantage of implants is that after an extraction, an implant will slow the disappearance of bone in the extraction site since the implant stimulates the body to maintain the bone levels locally. However, if your teeth have been missing for a while and there is little bone left, you may need a bone graft (surgery to add bone) before placing the implant. In addition, if an implant in the upper jaw is too close to your sinus or an implant in the lower jaw is too close to your nerve canal, then a bridge may be a better fit. A bridge does not have these bone requirements. Patients with a jaw bone that is wide and deep are great candidates for dental implants.

Health, not age, of patient A patient’s health, not age, determines suitability for an implant. Because this procedure requires healing in order to work effectively, candidates who are not ideal include smokers, patients with weakened immune systems or patients with diabetes. In these patients, the chances of success are reduced because a poorer blood supply diminishes the fusion of bone cells to the implant. In those with compromised health, a bridge may be a better choice as it does not require osseointegration, the process in which bone cells attach themselves directly to the titanium surface of the implant.

Quality of the neighboring teeth A bridge requires that the teeth adjacent to the space (abutment teeth) are strong enough to support the replacement tooth. If the abutment teeth are not robust enough to support a bridge (due to loss of bone from gum disease), then implants make more sense. Conversely, if the abutment teeth are sound but they have big fillings, root canals or existing crowns, then a bridge is a logical choice since the missing tooth can be replaced and the neighboring teeth restored with crowns (caps) in one step.

Longevity While bridges have an average life span of 10 years, an implant can last a lifetime. Implants do not decay, and adjacent healthy teeth do not require crowns to support them.

Because it is easy to clean and floss between implants, the gum tissue and underlying bone are more likely to remain healthy. With a bridge, if one of the supporting crowned teeth breaks or develops decay or nerve damage, the bridge and its

three or more crowns must be removed and replaced. Clearly, a patient's oral hygiene habits in both implants and bridges are closely related to the success of each restoration. If a patient takes poor care of his teeth, the lifespan of any tooth or restoration in the mouth is compromised.

Time The entire implant process can take three to nine months from start to finish. Much of that time is devoted to healing and waiting for the growth of new bone. In the first phase of the process, a specially trained surgeon places the implant, which generally takes three to six months to heal. If a bone graft is required, additional time is needed for healing. In the second phase, an abutment or extension of the implant is connected to the implant. Finally, a crown is placed on the abutment restoring the tooth to its original form. In contrast to implants, bridges can be done immediately after extraction (typically a “provisional bridge” is placed the day of the extraction to replace the tooth, then there is a threemonth wait for healing before making the “final” bridge). If the process of an implant sounds like it may take too long, you might want to consider a bridge.

Cost Implants are typically more expensive than bridges but they more closely simulate the appearance and function of natural teeth. Generally, dental insurances today will cover a portion of both implants and bridges.

Additional applications It should be noted that implants can also be used to stabilize a loose denture. Implant-supported dentures are most often made for the lower jaw where traditional dentures tend to be less stable. Implant-supported dentures can markedly improve your ability to chew food and eliminate the need for denture adhesives. Watch for future articles discussing implantsupported dentures at greater depth.

Summary Many factors will weigh in when choosing between a bridge and an implant. These factors will usually determine the logical choice that is the superior option for that particular patient and his particular circumstances. There are no rules but you are encouraged to discuss your dental situation with your dentist. For those of you with questions, I am experienced in both treatments – bridges and implants – and am always available to help you make the best possible choices for your dental health.

PATTY DEROOS MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN LIVES OUTSIDE HER CIRCLE

was recently awarded the Soroptimist International of Manteca “Women hat do you do after you and your husband raise three children and you retire from teaching, primarily at Manteca’s Making a Difference” certificate “In recognition of her professional/ voluntary accomplishments in making extraordinary differences in Sequoia and Shasta elementary schools for 38 years? the lives of women, children and families within her community.” The Patty DeRoos chose to help those in need in 2008 when the minister Manteca City Council also acknowledged her achievements with a at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church asked her to expand their Food Pantry. The pantry was started by Woodbridge resident Steve Parsons in 2007 and housed in a small storage room. Its mission was to focus on helping individuals and families with low and extremely low incomes, the recently unemployed and the homeless.

Patty accepted the invitation because of the great need in Manteca to make food available to low income families. “We averaged 20 families a week. I learned to write grants and organize workers, to counsel and encourage our clients. I wrote their compassionate stories to share with our congregation who also donates to our pantry,” said an impassioned Patty.

Today, the pantry helps about 250 low income families or about 800 – 1,000 people gain access to nutritious food every month. The pantry is now out of the small storage room and has moved to a larger area with four intake stations to screen clients for genuine hardship, track outcomes and promote self-sufficiency through job search resources, referrals and counseling. There is a kitchen with refrigeration and a storage area.

Patty is profoundly grateful to the 58 volunteers who work Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays to make this possible. Volunteers are from Manteca, Lathrop and Ripon. Garden Tasks for August

A

re we stupid or what?

My husband and I just undertook a minor Sandi Larson modification of our backyard. We took down a tree and a few azaleas, added a Bloodgood Japanese maple and moved some hydrangeas.

I don’t recommend this type of a move in the middle of summer, but we thought it would enhance our backyard. In order to help the hydrangeas survive the shock, we pruned them back by about 1/3. After I did that, I found a couple of articles that didn’t agree on whether to prune back or not. I guess time will tell. You can water with a diluted transplant solution to ease the shock. So far, so good.

I’m keeping my eyes out for aphids and whiteflies just to make sure they don’t move in for the kill!

This weather and drought haven’t slowed down any of the front yard landscaping in Woodbridge. If you have to relandscape or are just now installing your landscape, here are a few suggestions for keeping your plants alive during the heat of the summer: 1. Do your research and make sure you’re putting the right plant

in the right place!

2. Plant native plants or drought tolerant plants when possible.

3. Plant in the early morning or late evening, if possible, when

the temperatures are lower.

4. Mulch your newly planted vegetation with two to three inches

of mulch material such as redwood bark.

5. If your new plants require shade part of the time and there

isn’t any natural shade provided, shade by way of a sunshade, canopy or umbrella.

6. Soak plants very thoroughly right after planting.

7. Make sure you add adequate drip irrigation for the size of the

root ball.

8. Newly planted plants are going to need more water than

established plants for the first few weeks.

9. If you are going on vacation during the first few weeks after

planting, be sure to ask a neighbor to plant sit your new

She noted there is always a job for anyone who wants to help at the pantry. “If someone can’t stand, we’ll give them a job sitting down.

People want to give to others, but they just don’t always know how to do it. We even have folks buy tuna or peanut butter and leave it in the church office.”

Patty and husband Jim moved from Palomino Street (in Manteca) to Del Webb in 2007 and enjoy many aspects of their new life. She has participated in art classes with Ray Noble, attended a Brush and Cork party at the Clubhouse and met new people at Clubhouse functions. She is an active member of the book club and also enjoys the gym and pool where she swims laps.

10. Save your receipts. Many nurseries guarantee their plants.

Vegetables should be ripening this month. Peppers always need a little longer and more heat than tomatoes. In fact, tomatoes don’t do well when it’s over 90 degrees.

Continue to fertilize your citrus monthly. This is a good month to feed acid-loving azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons and hydrangeas.

You can also cut back hydrangeas that have finished blooming but don’t cut them back severely. Leave at least three leaf nodes on each branch.

As your fruit ripens, make sure you pick it up off the ground to prevent attracting yellow jackets and other insects. Pick up debris from fallen flowers to prevent spread of disease, also.

This is a good time to divide bearded iris. The recommendation is to divide every two to four years.

This is a good time to pick up a crepe myrtle bush or tree. To prolong blooming of crepe myrtles, you can pinch off the spent blooms and you may get a second bloom in the fall. As far as shape goes, my experience has been that the white and pink crepe myrtles have the widest spread when in bloom. The deep-rose ones have more of an upright shape. If possible, get the multitrunk variety for fullness and to provide additional shade to other plants. Crepe myrtles are very susceptible to white fly and aphids, so I recommend using the Bayer product for pest control.

Continue to fertilize summer blooming plants such as geraniums, tuberous begonias, petunias, impatiens, cosmos and fuchsias with 0-10-10 fertilizer. Keep an eye out for snails and earwigs. If the leaves of your hydrangea or gardenia are showing vein lines, consider feeding with chelated iron.

Many of my plants are doing well considering I’m only watering three times a week. I suggest going out into your yard at least every other day to check on the condition of your plants. With the heat we’ve been having recently, it only takes a day or two for your plants to die if your irrigation system should happen to fail.

A sincere “thank you” to all of the homeowners who opened their yards to the 200+ attendees of the Woodbridge Garden Tour this year. I know this is a huge undertaking for these homeowners, both physically and financially. We really do appreciate your volunteering your time to share your lovely yards with us.

Above all, Patty’s a walker and a self-proclaimed “bird nerd.” She walks about an hour in the community three or four times a week, carrying her binoculars and Birds of North America Field Guide.

“It’s safe (to walk) and I meet new people. I always stop to count the turtles. I’ve even seen and recorded my two sightings of a pair of White-Tailed Kites in an oak tree over the fence near Panda Park.

They’re quite rare and California is the only area in continental America where they’re found,” she confided.

Patty also enjoys watching sports with Jim who was a collegiate four-year letterman in basketball and a high school basketball coach.

“Now it’s baseball. I’m a Giants fan,” she said.

Patty and Jim have three children and two granddaughters, all living in Manteca.

Softball This Month

ELECTION TIME APPROACHES FOR SOFTBALL COUNCIL It is hard to believe, as we start the second half of our softball season, that we are only a couple of months away from voting for 2016 officers for the Woodbridge Senior Softball Club (WSSC).

There will be six positions coming up for election, each to serve a two-year term.

The President shall supervise and control all of the business affairs of the club and serve as an ex-officio member of all committees.

The Field Vice President shall advise and consult with the president and be responsible for field maintenance and equipment.

The Committee Vice President shall advise and consult with the president, be responsible for all committees and perform such duties as assigned by the council. (Disciplinary Committee) The Secretary shall keep the minutes of all council and membership meetings, prepare and keep a membership roster and confirm that a quorum is present, duly give all notices required by law or the bylaws, conduct official correspondence of the club and perform such duties as assigned by the council.

The Financial Officer shall collect all monies due to the club, be the custodian of the club’s funds and deposit them in a depository designated by the council (sign all checks and other duties per bylaws).

The Head Umpire shall be in charge of rule interpretation and exceptions and be responsible for the recruitment and training of umpires to officiate all recreational club games and Wolverine games, as requested.

All softball program participants will be eligible to vote. This year we will have two voting dates: Saturday, September 26, and Wednesday, September 30. SOFTBALL WINNERS FOR JULY Name the Minor League Team

e have five winners who correctly identified the Corpus Christi Hooks in the June Minor League Cap Challenge: Jacque Reynolds, Mel Topping, Mike Killingsworth, John Ochoa and Sharyl Burgeson. Congratulations to all. Enjoy your lunch at the Snack Shack during an upcoming softball game.

The Corpus Christi Hooks from Corpus Christi, Texas, are a Class AA affiliate for the Houston Astros. The start of the franchise dates back to 1968 when they began in the Texas League as the Memphis Blues. They won the league title twice, in 1969 and 1973. Then, in 1974, they moved to Victoria, Texas, played in Toro Stadium as the Victoria Toros and won the league title again. In 1975 the team moved again, this time to Jackson, Mississippi, where they remained for 25 years as the Mets (1975-1990) and as the Generals ((19911999). They qualified for the playoffs 13 times and won five league championships (1981, 1984, 1985, 1993, 1996).

Nolan Ryan and his ownership group acquired the team in 1998 and moved it from Jackson to Round Rock, Texas, in time for the 2000 season. The Round Rock Express won the league title in its first year playing at the Dell Diamond.

The Express shattered league attendance records throughout a five-year run and qualified for playoffs four of the five years.

In 2004 they moved to Corpus Christi at the start of the season, made possible when the current owners acquired the Triple-A franchise in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and announced their move to Round Rock.

The team colors are navy blue and light blue representing the ocean and sky popular in the South Texas fishing area.

The team mascots are Sammy the Seagull, a cool laid-back seagull that wears his ball cap backward and runs birthday parties and Rusty Hook, a “fish-hook” look-alike with a tail that looks just like a hook.

Alumni include: Charlton Jimerson, Hector Gimenez, J.R. House, Fernado Nieve, Chris Sampson, Jason Hirsh, Hunter Pence, Jason Castro, Chris Johnsen, Jose Altuve, Fernando Abad and J.D. Martinez.

recently interviewed owner Chris Cefalu and learned that Manteca Lighting is celebrating its 30th year of serving customers at its East Yosemite Avenue location. Two ladies from Modesto who were high school best friends and whose husbands had retired, opened the business in 1985. Chris was attending East Union High School at the time and upon graduation went to work for the ladies while attending Delta College. The ladies loved to travel and the more they traveled, the more responsibilities were passed on to Chris. Eventually he became manager of the store and in 2000, the ladies sold the entire enterprise to him.

Chris and his wife Sandy have three children. Son Tyler, 20, attends Merced Junior College; Shelby, their daughter, is 14 and attends East Union and Lane, the youngest son, is 12. They live in Manteca not far from Chris’ mom and enjoy the community and family lifestyle offered in the town in which they grew up. Manteca Lighting regularly sponsors a boys’ Little League team or girls’ softball team.

In addition to the football that Chris played for East Union back in the day, he is an accomplished skeet shooter. He was good enough

to be one of 25 national finalists invited to try out for the Olympic team in both 1987 and 1989. He currently enjoys hunting, fishing and generally being in the outdoors, as does his family during their frequent camping trips. Pismo Beach is one of Chris’ favorite outdoor destinations. Wife Sandy and daughter Shelby are both currently playing softball. Sandy plays in an adult league and Shelby plays at East Union High.

Chris is very appreciative of the business received from Woodbridge residents and prides himself on providing the best service possible in a friendly environment. He tries to cater to our specific needs, learning the various home models and their lighting layouts. He has performed walk-throughs of all models noting the fixtures located in each room and keeps diagrams of the layouts at the business to assure residents obtain the proper replacement lights.

O

ne of the many support groups for our beloved WSSC softball games is the announcers’ booth. There is a trio (announcer, scorekeeper and scoreboard) working as a team to support the umps, players and fans. This section of WSSC is managed and coordinated by Joanne Norcup.

The announcers report the action on the field. They might emotionally reflect the general feel of the game, and they absolutely solicit fan involvement! They are in charge of the music played— usually choosing the right song/sound for the right moment—or some peppy tune to elicit excitement and fun (get up and dance!). You will also hear information about our sponsors, snack shack menus or even commercials regarding our clubhouse activities. Each announcer brings his or her own style and humor to the microphone. (One of my earlier year faves was when R.J. Klug dryly announced a play as “EC3”—error on the third base coach for not waving the runner in!) The announcer roster includes Caroline Gibson, Reno Cortesi, Robi Cornelius, Mike Lough and me.

The scorekeepers record the action on the field. Every single pitch, every movement by every runner and how each out was produced.

(Let’s say Joe hits a fly ball on a 3-2 pitch, with runners on second and third. The ball drops, second baseman throws to first for the force out, and both runners advance. The scorekeeper, who marked all five pitches, marks the 4-3 out against Joe, gives him an RBI, marks the runner from third to home, notes the run, and marks the runner from second to third. All this is done after the ump makes the call and before the next batter comes to the plate! (Last year, after taking Ed Shoup’s scorekeeping class, I practiced scoring while watching a Giants game (typically a score of 3-2) before my first scorekeeping duty at our softball game. I felt confident, but by the end of our softball game, the score was 24-22! I was pulling my hair out!)

As you can imagine, 100 percent focus is required. This useful data enables us to “replay” any part of the game—for example, if a coach needs to question what the third out was or why the runs seem off, we can tell specifically what happened. All score sheets are kept, and players, umps, coaches and council can access and review for whatever purpose. The scorekeeper roster includes Roger Goodnow, Joanne Norcup, Bill Norcup, LaVerne Cortesi, Janet Smyers, Bill Buffington, Jacque Reynolds and me.

When my wife Vicki and I first considered a move to Woodbridge, we met with then-Del Webb sales associate Lori Little. Lori had been a part of the Del Webb sales team since Woodbridge opened in 2006 and was the local human resources manager for Pulte Homes/Del Webb prior to that. In the early formation days of the Woodbridge softball program, I was “volunteered” to oversee fund-raising efforts that would enhance the club’s resources and success. The Lori’s didn’t hesitate for a moment in saying “YES!” to sponsoring Woodbridge softball.

The trio works as a team — they all support each other and constantly do double checks to make sure they’re all on the same page. They get into a rhythm and try to avoid distractions as they need to pay attention to the field. (If your wave to them is not immediately acknowledged, this is why.)

The American flag is placed by Caroline and Perry Gibson for every game. Clubhouse staff sets up the equipment and cleans the booth. The booth trio puts it all away.

There is good chemistry and camaraderie in the booth (as there is throughout our league), and it’s just fun to be a part of the Woodbridge softball group.

In 2014, Woodbridge resident Eldon Regua qualified for the 10K road race in the Arizona Senior Olympics and the 5K road race and 1,500 meter run at the Washington State Games. He ran the 5K road race at the Senior Nationals in Minnesota, July 6, and placed ninth of 31 men registered in the 60-64 age group. Congratulations, Eldon!

T

hursday evening, July 16, found Woodbridge residents enjoying the display put on by the Radio Controlled Flyers Group and their friends. As dusk came, the flyers put on their lights to demonstrate their flying skills. The group has done this several times in the past but this was by far the largest turnout of residents watching them light up the sky.

If this demonstration inspired any resident to want to try his/ her hand at flying, please call Bob Umberger at 239-2983. He will be glad to show you the ropes and let you try flying with a “buddy” box. He will train you in the basics and will coach you along. He also has a simulator available for practice. The Radio Controlled Flyers Group is always looking for new members.

Movers and Shakers in Woodbridge Couple Enriches Community

W

e are so fortunate here in our community to have so many creative and talented folks who are willing Judy McNamara to share their time and energy to make this community the special place it is.

Jacquie and Dave Steffy are two of the most involved people in Woodbridge. They moved here from Modesto in 2006 having been looking at our community since 2005. By 2006 they moved into Del Webb, one of the first couples to buy into the community. The Steffys immediately became involved in creating activities.

Dave grew up in Riverside, California, graduating from high school in 1965. He went into the Navy and was shipped to Vietnam in 1967.

In 1969, he was fortunate enough to watch both Apollo 8 and Apollo 10 landings from his aircraft carrier. Dave attended Riverside College and Cal Poly, graduating with a degree in computer science.

Jacquie was the daughter of a military family and moved around a lot. She attended Chapman College and received her degree in chemistry. She and Dave married in 1971 and have four children and nine grandchildren It was in 1993 that the Steffys moved to Modesto where Dave worked as a computer programmer and Jacquie taught high school chemistry.

As two of our movers and shakers, Dave started the Cribbage Club and the now ever so popular chair volleyball group. He is also involved in Neighbors Helping Neighbors and umpires at softball games.

Jacquie started the Del Webb choir having had a musical background. It began fairly small and, now called Woodbridge Singers, is up to more than 60 members with Elizabeth Cunning its director. Besides being active in the choir, Jacquie also plays softball for the Diamond Gals.

Both Dave and Jacquie are active in the choir and this spring Jacquie demonstrated her comedic singing talents when she and Kathy Dezotte performed the well-known song from Oklahoma, "I Cain't Say No.” When time permits, the Steffys take trips with the 55ers RV Club, traveling to various parts of our great state.

Kudos to this tireless couple who add so much enrichment to our wonderful community.

Zombies are 'a Naquin!

B

ob Naquin, Woodbridge resident, is a man of many talents. He has written and published several books and plays having discovered his talents later in life. Many of you have seen Bob’s plays performed here at Woodbridge and could probably identify with some of the characters. Bob is able to capture what is relevant to our age group with wonderful humor that makes us all laugh at ourselves and our follies. His plays "Doctor, Doctor," "Perils of Carman Gedditt," "Dead Cat: The Play," "Get Your Flu Shot!" "Silent Movie" and "The Speeding Ticket" are available on ArtAge Senior Resource Center. The plays are produced throughout the country, keeping seniors in mind who want to fulfill their theatrical dreams.

Besides writing plays, Bob has also published books. A delightful book is "Gizmo - A Short Story About a Small Dog." Everyone, not just dog lovers, will enjoy this cleverly written story about Gizmo the dog who provides his owners with unconditional love. Bob is also in the final phase of another book, "The Liars' Club: A Short Book of Tall Tales."

Bob was born in Cajun country, more specifically, Thibodaux, Louisiana. He attended the University of Maryland, American River College and Sacramento State University, receiving a degree in Product Management. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan, made four rotations in Vietnam and one complete tour during the years of 1969,’70, ‘71 and ‘72.

It was in 1972 that Bob married Linda, the love of his life, and the two lived in Germany for four years. In 1976 they moved to California where they lived in Granite Bay. Bob worked in research and development, developing laser systems used in science and medicine and holds several patents in this area.

Bob quit working at age 50 when Linda developed cancer. He took care of her until her death in 2001. Devastated beyond words upon her death, Bob sold their house with everything in it and moved onto his boat in Stockton where he lived for five years before moving to Woodbridge in 2008.

Bob does enjoy his life here at Woodbridge but also finds time to travel on his three-wheel motorbike on which he has traveled the entire length of Route 66. He has also made a trip around the U.S. on Amtrak. From the seat of his motorbike he says his writing hobby was launched.

When here at Woodbridge, besides producing and directing plays and leading the Drama group, Bob plays softball. He is on a recreational team out of Modesto called Damaged Goods. Last year his team won a gold medal in the World Senior Games in St. George,

Utah. This year he is registered to play with another softball team, the Merchants. He's also entered in the 50-meter dash competition.

On Bob's quest for zombies he has created a blog site called Bob Naquin's Ramblings, found at http://bobspyder.wordpress.com/, ... far too long for this amateur writer to condense. As expected, it's cleverly written and very humorous and gives you a peek inside the mind of a very talented man.

"I'm Just a Girl Who Cain't Say No" … and who says it more than Kathy Dezotte? This “Woodbridgian” has more energy than any 10 people.

I

'm fortunate enough to live in this Small World to actually prove the concept of *Six Degrees of Separation. After spending time interviewing Kathy, it was amazingly evident how we were connected by less than six degrees by knowing a friend, of a friend, of a friend since we were both brought up in the Bay Area, worked in the same area of education in Alameda County, both have three kids including two daughters named Kathy and Kristy. Kathy worked at the same high school at which my husband taught and knows the same people.

The connections go on.

Kathy was born in Oakland in 1944. She and her parents moved to Long Beach where they lived until Kathy was 13 then they moved back to the Bay Area. The family lived in San Lorenzo where Kathy went to Arroyo High School. She married Buzz, her high school sweetheart and next-door neighbor, in 1963 and the two have been married 52 years. They have three daughters, and now six grandchildren. Kathy was a stay-at-home mom whose volunteer days began when the girls were in school - PTA, Blue Bird leader, etc. After being encouraged to go back to school to get her AA degree in Early Childhood Education, Kathy started working in 1975 for San Lorenzo Unified School District as an aide in grade school. After that she became an aide in the Resource Program at Arroyo High.

Not only did she do that but while there for 12 years she was the coach for the rally squad and taught poster making at CADA leadership conventions. She won the California State Championship at CADA in 1988. After working at Arroyo for years she became the grade school secretary at Hillside School, but retired after four years.

Not one to remain idle for long, Kathy went to work at Life West Chiropractic College as their registrar of clinical studies.

In 1999 it became apparent Kathy’s parents needed help so she and Buzz bought a large home in Modesto to take care of them until their deaths.

After they sold their Modesto home in 2008, they moved to Woodbridge. Immediately Kathy became involved in coed softball, but after being hit between the eyes by an errant softball she decided her talents were needed elsewhere. Kathy, Karla Hoyer and Charlene Haywood thought the unused snack bar needed to be resurrected which it now has been, under Kathy's competent leadership. She's grateful for the help of her snack bar crew, which includes Ron Kackley as the grill master and Sharon Fields, Sandy Bosse and Jacquie Andrews.

About the same time she started the snack bar, Kathy met Bonnie Buckman, Margo Flanagan and Kathy Music and began the Artist and Crafters Group.

As if that wasn't enough, she began to volunteer for the Lifestyle Committee, where she helps set up and decorate for various activities.

Are you exhausted yet? Well, Kathy also creates all the wonderful posters you see as you enter the Clubhouse. Such talent she has!

Kathy is certainly "A Girl Who Can't Say No," the song which she and Jacquie Steffy sang from the musical “Oklahoma” at the Woodbridge Singers’ spring concert.

Thanks, Kathy, for sharing all of your time and talent with the residents of Woodbridge. You are so appreciated. * Six Degrees of Separation is the theory that everyone and everything is six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person in the world, so that a chain of "a friend of a friend" statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps. It was originally set out by Frigyes Karinthy in 1929 and popularized by a 1990 play written by John Guare. Who knows, you may be 6 degrees from Kevin Bacon or anyone here in Woodbridge.

s we continue into our fourth year with the Wine 101 class, I couldn't help reminiscing back to February 2012 when the second class was held in the home of Ron and Sharon Kreitzer. On that evening, about 30 of us were educated on port wine, imbibed many of those wines and enjoyed decadent chocolate desserts. Since that chilly February evening, the Wine 101 class has continued to grow into what is now a class of 101 people who congregate at the Clubhouse. The popularity of the class continues to astound me as the latest sign-up for the July class ended only two-and-a-half days after being posted.

In the July class, themed "Which White is Which," participants went to four stations and tasted an unknown white wine at each. They were then asked to reach into the wine identification section of their brains to try to identify the varietal tasted. Wines had been transferred to different bottles so they could not be recognized by their bottle, label or cork. A few hints were given. As usual, several tables were filled with incredible appetizers and there was also a table of desserts. Class members each brought a white wine for sharing which was placed on the community table. Many also brought other wines to share with the folks at their table or neighboring tables. We had a wonderful time for a summer get together. New residents continue to join us and many new friends have been made during these programs.

I am pleased to announce that Thursday, August 13, we will be honored by the presence of Bob Schulenberg, an established wine grower in the Lodi Appellation. Thanks to Linda Little for introducing me to Bob who will talk about the trials and tribulations of his profession. The theme for this event is "A Year in the Life of a Lodi Grape Grower." Class participants should bring a Lodi wine (red, white or rosé) to place on the community table. The class is held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. There are no admission fees. Class members should also bring their own wineglasses, a bottle of Lodi wine and an appetizer to share. As always, other wines may be brought to share with your table.

Wine 101 classes are open to any resident interested in learning more about wine and meeting a great bunch of people with a similar interest.

To plan ahead, the following classes will be offered in 2015: • Wednesday, September 16, 6 - 8:30 p.m. (Sign-ups begin at the front desk at the Clubhouse Friday, August 14. You may call in your reservations.) Theme: "What's It Take to Become a Sommelier?" presented by Don Vehrs, a Woodbridge resident.

• Wednesday, October 7, 6 - 8:30 p.m. (Sign-ups begin at the front desk at the Clubhouse Thursday, September 17.) Theme: "Wines of Washington.”

• Wednesday, November 4, 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Bus trip to Lodi Appellation to visit Durst and Macchia wineries. Information is posted on the portal, on flyers and is available by email. Cost is $32 per person. Limited to 54 participants. Bring your own lunch.

• Wednesday, December 9, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. (NOTE TIME CHANGE). "Fourth Annual Christmas potluck and bottle exchange." Sign-ups for this event will begin Thursday, November 5.

r. Harvey was born right here at Doctors Hospital of Manteca. After graduating from Manteca High School in 2000, he served a two-year fulltime mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he learned to read, speak and write Spanish fluently. Following his return, he pursued a college degree and graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry. After completing his undergraduate education, Dr. Harvey obtained a doctorate in Podiatric Medicine in 2012 from the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, California.

He was accepted as a resident at one of the country's best residency programs at the Kaiser North Bay Consortium based in Vallejo, California, where he became familiar with a variety of advanced techniques and procedures, including rear foot and ankle surgery.

Dr. Harvey is excited to return to his roots with his wife and three

children and to use the skills and talents he has obtained to serve those in his hometown.

Safety Habits for Woodbridge Hints for Living Safely

oodbridge is a wonderful and safe community, but there are bad guys out there committing crimes of opportunity. Our houses were built with safety in mind, but we need to use some selfhelp to keep ourselves safe.

Pulte has built secure houses with deadbolt door locks, lockable windows and perimeter fencing with lockable gates. In some cases, the houses have basic burglar alarm wiring. The problem is we don’t use these features enough because it’s not a habit. When we leave our homes, many of us already have a mental checklist: grab the car keys and sunglasses, check the front door, drive away. A few items you may want to add to your list: A quick check that the cooktop burners are off, the slider is closed and locked, the front door is locked, the alarm is set, the side gate is locked and the side garage door is locked. Your list could be different. How do you develop a habit like this? There are many memory tricks and methods. One method you may consider is, first, jot down your “Leaving the House” list, perhaps numbering the steps. Next, when you leave the house, read the list aloud for a few days. You will begin to establish a mental checklist and a walking pattern that will soon become a habit.

You can easily develop a “Going to Bed” or “Going for a Walk” checklist and habit.

We change our clocks twice a year for Daylight Saving Time.

That could be a good time to tend to the needs of your house.

The checklist could be as long as you like, but there a few biggies to include: smoke alarm batteries, dryer vent and cooking vent cleanliness, age of the supply lines to the washer, all exterior lights working properly, age of A/C filters, location of a working flashlight. There are more things to check but the habit is to repeat the inspections twice a year.

When you take a walk or ride your bike in the community, make it a habit to wear your Woodbridge badge. If you’re walking in the early morning or evening, lighting can be a challenge. It can be comforting to notice a walker on the opposite side of the street has a badge dangling from their neck.

In a similar vein, if you encounter a fellow resident and can’t recall his name, a glance at their badge can be very helpful.

The current mantra for law enforcement is, “See Something, Say Something.” That holds true here. When you are moving about Woodbridge (walking, riding or driving), be aware of suspicious persons and vehicles. If it looks suspicious to you, the police need to know. The police may not be able to respond in a timely manner, but they will have a record of a suspicious person, car or situation. Police administrators allocate their resources, in part, by reports of suspicious activities, even if a crime did not occur. If you encounter a suspicious person, do not challenge or confront him; let the police do their job.

Safety and security at home and in the community can be positively impacted by our continuing good habits.

he “Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/ drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 4.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to: • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods 'celebrate' NNO with a variety of events and activities such as: • Block parties, • Cookouts, • Visits from local police and sheriff departments, • Parades, exhibits, • Flashlight walks, • Contests, and • Youth programs.

NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation.

he 1984 introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” began an ongoing effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. National Night Out culminates annually on the first Tuesday of August.

National Night Out now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all 50 states.

The traditional “lights on” campaign and symbolic front porch vigils turned into a celebration across America with various events and activities including, but not limited to, block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from emergency personnel, rallies and marches, exhibits, youth events and safety demonstrations, in an effort to heighten awareness and enhance community relations. Various city departments, such as the fire and police, will visit many of the gatherings.

While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out represents the kind of spirit, energy and determination to help make neighborhoods a safer place year round. The night celebrates safety and crime prevention successes and works to expand and strengthen the program for the next 364 days.

Ask your block captain about the gathering for this special night in your area. If you are new to the community or don’t have someone on your street who is a block captain, please contact me at 239-5712 and I will make sure you get the information you need. It’s a great chance to get to know some of your fellow neighbors.

NWP: Neighbors on Patrol

ou’ve seen the little yellow light flashing on the slow-moving Neighborhood Watch Patrol vehicle. Our neighbor volunteers patrol each and every home on each and every street.

This program began early on by Bob Hall and Al Sanchez, who, eight or so years later, still run the show. Numerous neighbors have volunteered their time to help keep our community safe. (I’ve been in the program for three years.) The Manteca Police Department constantly lauds our efforts, and they repeatedly remind us we are still one of the safest neighborhoods in Manteca.

Our program is very effective: The key is to provide a presence, which is a deterrent to outsiders who think they can take advantage of our age-restricted “hood.” It’s pure joy to watch someone drive in on Del Webb Boulevard, see the flashing yellow patrol light, and make an immediate U-turn to go back out to Union Road! It still makes me smile!

Patrollers are non-confrontational—safety must always come first.

If there is an issue, we radio the second car on patrol, or we call the police. We will follow a vehicle until it leaves the community. (NOTE: Please put a sticker on the rear driver side window of your car so we don’t have to take the time to follow you. This is how we know you belong here. You may pick up a sticker at the front desk of the Clubhouse.)

Again, the presence of Neighborhood Watch patrol is an effective deterrent and we look upon Woodbridge’s amenities as our “backyard.”

That’s why you must have your badge with you at all times on the common grounds. And you must accompany your guests (unless they have purchased a day pass) at all times. (For example, you cannot send your grandkids to play basketball or tennis by themselves; we might think they are children from an outside neighborhood like Atherton Homes.

Another function of the patrol is to help keep our neighbors’ homes safe. As we all know, you cannot keep your garage door open unless you are utilizing the garage. (Refer to our HOA Rules & Regulations.)

While we have no interest in enforcing compliance (even leaving the garage door open six inches is against the rules), we don’t want you unaware that your garage door is wide open. (Remember, if your door is up several inches, someone can stick a hand or foot under it and trip the sensor.) The same goes for your gate—though usually we will just close it for you. Sometimes car trunks or car doors are left open; we will let you know. We put away newspapers that are accumulating in your driveway. (We hide them on your porch.) These are just examples of things we do.

Ours are city streets—so other people are legally allowed to be here— but they really have no business in our hood at night, and we just follow them until they leave.

Patrol hours vary—and we like to have at least two patrols on any shift—so we are looking for volunteers. Patrollers choose their days/ hours. Please contact Bob Hall or Al Sanchez for more information.

As a community, we should all look out for each other. Pay attention to your immediate environment and report suspicious people or vehicles to the police. You can use your phone to take a picture of the license plate number (or write it down) and email it to Bob or Al. There’s a report form you can fill out at the front desk to advise us of suspicious activity. Be sure to include the date and time so we can check the surveillance cameras. A patrol roster will be posted and you can call us as well.

Take preventive steps yourself—leave your front, porch and side lights on. Lock your gate. Install sensor lights and/or cameras. Don’t keep your garage door remote in your car if you park it in the driveway.

Leave your car keys on your bedside table—if you hear something at night, you can push the panic button on it to create noise from your car, and then you’ll be in a safer position to check it out.

Trust your instincts. Look out for each other—we as a community are a team. Be respectful and courteous to each other—and wave to the patrollers so we know you belong here.

Nights on Woodbridge Patrol

T

he Woodbridge Neighborhood Watch program began in January 2008 and patrolling started soon thereafter. I had no volunteers for a few days until Al Sanchez heard what I wanted to do and offered to help. I believe it was in February we started going out every night from around 9:30 p.m. until 11:30 or midnight. We did this for over a year.

At the time we started the program, there were probably less than 200 homes completed. We didn’t have a Clubhouse then, just a trailer that served as our gathering place. Woodbridge had many vacant lots and streets that had no homes. Because we were a new type of community for Manteca, we attracted a lot of curious people who would come investigate at night. Some of them were also checking out the community for opportunities for a quick grab and run.

Of course, there were many parties held during those nights when we were out, and sometimes I would call Al on his cellphone (we didn’t have radios then) and he wouldn’t answer. He normally covered the west side and I covered the east. I would drive to his area looking for him and would find his car in front of a house where a big party was going on and he would be inside enjoying the party. Of course, I had to determine if it was a legal gathering. I did this by tasting some of the food, which was always very good.

Al and I saw many things during those nights and we feel that what happens in Woodbridge should stay in Woodbridge. Most nights at first were quite busy with many cars traveling in and out through the evening. I remember one night after the Clubhouse was finished, there was a big party held there and after it ended, several of the residents were feeling no pain. The monitor at the front desk called us and said we needed to come to the Clubhouse. When we arrived we

found one lady in no shape to drive home. Al put her in the passenger seat of her car and drove her home and I followed him so I could bring him back. When we got to her house, she was so happy that we were helping her that she kept thanking us and hugging Al and saying she loved us. It took us several minutes to finally get back on patrol that night.

We always patrolled the streets without homes on them because we would sometimes come upon a car just sitting there. Since Al covered the west side and it had so many streets like this, he encountered sitting cars most of the time. It turned out that loving couples would park and think no one would discover them and would get very “friendly.” Al would see a car alone and call me because we never could be sure what was happening - gangs, drugs, sex or alcohol.

When I arrived, we then trained flashlights on the car from a distance.

We would see bodies jumping around in the car and heads poking up from the back seat and maybe a little bare skin. After a few minutes, the car would drive off and Al and I would be looking at each other and laughing. We actually felt sorry for the cars’ occupants, but we didn’t want that activity going on in the community.

We saw all kinds of animals running around at night. Foxes were common and once in awhile a skunk, and, of course, stray cats and dogs. Thankfully, most nights were very quiet, especially after a few months and outsiders found out we were doing patrols at night.

Mostly what we do now is notify residents their garage door has been left open and most are usually thankful because they were not aware it was open. There are a few people who are not aware that, according to Woodbridge CC&Rs, the door must be down if the garage is not being used.

The people patrolling at night are volunteering their time for the good of the community, so when you see them with their flashing amber light, please give them a friendly wave. They will appreciate it.
