From the Editor: CHICAGO, June 13 -- After torrential rains and multiple warnings to seek shelter from tornadoes playing hopscotch from Iowa to Ohio last night, we woke from a restless night to a new day full of sunshine and promise. We are off to visit the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry today. Specifically, we plan to visit and tour the U-505, the only German submarine in the United States, and, now, a national memorial to the 55,000 American sailors who gave their lives on the high seas in WWI and WWII.

Fishing with Warren Wootton

next to Ellen’s five by six-foot hanging handmade quilt. A quick glance left into the office reveals two dozen more fishing rods in two corners. Warren has more than a fondness for fishing; it is his passion.

Warren, wearing a bass fishing t-shirt, explained that he’s been fishing “pretty much” all of his life since he grew up near a lake in Virginia. It was after college when he seriously took up the sport. He also tried golfing, but didn’t feel much improvement after a year of playing. Thus, fishing became his focus.

In May 2008, Warren and Ellen moved into their Woodbridge home, 300 steps from Lake Rockwell, where he started fishing approximately three times a week. “Sometimes, I even fished six times a week,” he stated.

xecutive Director Kayo Armstrong noticed Warren’s fishing penchant and asked him to help her write rules and regulations for the lake.

Warren researched other catch and release lakes on the internet, and the two arrived at the rules posted on lakeside signs. In essence, they read: · Catch and release · Must have Woodbridge identification · No live bait · No treble hooks · Only barbless hooks

Lake Rockwell is stocked with largemouth bass and bluegills. Warren’s trophy fish was an eight-pound bass caught on a spinning rod with eightpound line. He has also brought in three seven-pounders and a number of four or five pounders. In one to one-and-a-half hours of fishing, Warren usually lands four or five fish. “I generally have at least one bass in the 12 to 13-inch size or about one pound,” he explained.

Warren usually uses a spinning rod and a spinner bait with a single barbless hook which imitates a minnow or baitfish. He might lose a few, maybe one in 10, with a barbless hook, but, “You learn to compensate by keeping the rod high and the line tight.” He further explained that in catch and release fishing, it is necessary to land a fish quickly and return it to the water. This should take no more than five minutes, including taking your picture.

e mentioned that fish move up and down according to the water temperature. In the summer, Warren likes to fly fish early in the morning when the fish are closer to the top of the water. In the winter, he will generally spin cast with plastic worms. “You learn about weather conditions. In the early mornings, you use a light-colored top water bait and in the evenings, a dark-colored bait which may or may not be a top water bait.”

“Vegetation does make fishing more difficult, especially for children,” said Warren. However, the vegetation is good because it adds oxygen to the water and also gives the bait fish a place to hide,” he explained.

Warren sometimes uses 10 to 15-pound line to avoid a fish breaking the line in the vegetation.

“Lake Rockwell is good fishing. It’s a small lake, so fish are easier to find with the right lure. You have to try different areas depending on weather conditions,” he said.

arren also likes to fish the foothill Mother Lode lakes, Don Pedro and New Melones, where he has yearly passes for boat launching and trailer parking.

His tips include always carrying two rods. With fly fishing, one rod has a floating fly and the other, a sinking fly. With spincasting, one rod’s lure is small and the other, bigger with a heavier line.

Warren also enjoys trying new lures in the lake and just walking around the lake and viewing the wildlife. Even if he does not catch any fish, he said he enjoys the walk.

From Dodie's Desk: The Fourth of July is one of the most celebrated holidays in America. This is the holiday when we can enjoy the things that make America great. Our parties are great fun and festive, but we all can make the Fourth of July a little more meaningful by saying “thank you” to a member of the military or a veteran when we’re out and about shopping for all those party goodies. It’s a small gesture but a meaningful one.

We had a very successful Fifth Annual Spring Garden Tour this year headed by Jacqueline Andrews and the committee that organized and was committed to having the day run smoothly.

Residents and guests were greeted with a program and map to get them on their way viewing ten residents' backyards and then return to the Clubhouse for a box lunch. The tour ended with a raffle in our Clubhouse Community Living Room.

Our Drama Group gave us three evenings of entertainment with lots of laughter. I heard comments like, “It was hilarious.” All of the rehearsals and hard work paid off once again. Good job! And our ‘50s dance was successful too.

Following the In-N-Out burger dinner, the ‘50s Hot Rods Band played residents’ favorite '50s and '60s songs. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It was another evening of Woodbridge camaraderie.

The Del Webb Champagne Brunch included 50 residents who hosted 70 potential future homeowners who could all become our neighbors. The delicious brunch included scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, a decadent waffle-making station, fresh fruit, scones, muffins and cinnamon rolls. Champagne, coffee, juice and tea were also provided. Residents answered lots of questions from the potential homeowners.

Ending the month of June was the Tahoe Overnight Getaway trip. We had lots of fun on the bus with game playing, snacks, drinks and conversation. After a

Of course, it’s always the anticipation of getting there, and too soon we had to turn around and come back. Everyone had such a good time. It was like having your favorite ice cream cone but only getting to eat half of it.

Standards a cut above

This month I would like to share with you a few of those qualities I personally will be looking for in candidates running for the Board of Directors. If I am going to place my faith and trust in the judgment of individuals to represent my best interests and those of the Association, I want that person to have standards a cut above and to have a well-versed understanding of the wide range of situations that develop here at Woodbridge.

Confidentiality: The need to maintain confidentiality is a paramount requirement of the job. Whether it be individuals sharing complaints about other individuals or groups, or individuals stating their position on hot issues in confidence, or information discussed and decisions made in Executive Session, far-reaching negative impacts can happen if that confidence is not maintained.

Representation: A Homeowner’s Association is a form of representative government. Just as with any state or federal legislature,

Resident director nominating period in full swing

The nominating period for Resident Director candidates opened on June 10, and your Nominating Committee has been hard at work preparing the application, scheduling election-related events and recruiting candidates. I’ve spoken with several residents interested in running and am encouraged we’ll be in great hands after the September election.

As you might know, the Board of Directors currently consists of three representatives from the developer (Pulte Homes) and two residents. When we reach 1,068 home closings at Woodbridge, this majority will shift and we will have three Resident Directors. We’re currently around 750 closed homes, so it is likely that the directors we elect in September will provide the leadership into the transition from a Pulte-majority Board to a Resident-majority Board. Obviously, this is a crucial role for the future of Woodbridge.

Mark your calendar for July 31 at 6 p.m., when we will hold “Meet the Candidates” night. This will be an informal opportunity to meet the potential Resident Directors, ask questions and understand what each will contribute to the community if elected. In mid-August, the Nominating Committee will host a more formal Candidate Forum.

Also, be sure to mark your calendar for the annual Membership Meeting and elections on September 25. This is a crucial meeting, and your vote will decide the Board leadership of this community going forward. Following the September meeting, we will host a reception in honor of and gratitude for the service of “retiring” Resident Directors Denise Drewry and Bill Barnhart.

If you’re considering running for one of the two very important Resident Director positions and haven’t already done so, please contact me so we can chat. I look forward to speaking with you, and you still have two weeks (from Woodbridge LIFE publication day) to submit your application. Applications are due July 12. Welcome, Ramon Rivera!

The WOA is pleased to welcome its newest employee, Maintenance Supervisor Ramon Rivera.

Although Ramon had been working with the association on a temporary basis, he officially began his full-time employment with the WOA on June 1.

Ramon brings to Woodbridge a fantastic background and has worked with the Woodbridge community as a contractor since 2006. In his new role, Ramon is responsible for overseeing all aspects of common area maintenance throughout the community.

Ramon’s “can-do” attitude, strong work ethic and positive nature are greatly appreciated assets on the Woodbridge team.

A California native, Ramon was born in San Francisco, raised in Patterson and currently resides in Modesto. Ramon holds a degree in Business Administration from Heald College. In his free time, Ramon enjoys watching basketball and football and spending time with his family and girlfriend Kristie.

According to Ramon, “I am excited for the opportunity to work with residents and provide superior service as a WOA employee. I want to provide residents with my maximum effort and do my best to exceed their expectations as the maintenance supervisor.”

Your back is amazing because the spine can flex, hyperextend and rotate. The regions of the spine that contribute most to flexion and hyperextension are the cervical and lumbar regions. The largest range of motion for lateral flexion occurs in the cervical (neck) region, with approximately 9-10 degrees of motion allowed at C4-C5. Lateral flexion in the lumbar (mid) spine is also on the order of six degrees, except at L5-S1, where it is reduced to only about three degrees. Spinal rotation in the transverse plane is again freest in the cervical region of the spine, with up to 12 degrees of motion allowed.

Strong abdominal muscles contribute significantly to spinal stability. If you have weak abdominal muscles, your lower back muscles must carry the load, leading to lower back pain. Doing crunches may be a “pain” but will help prevent pain in your back.

he game of sitting volleyball was developed in the 1950s from the games of volleyball and the German spitzball. The first sitting volleyball match was played in 1957, and the first Paralympic games were played in 1996. Sitting Karla Hoyer volleyball is also known as chair volleyball and wheelchair volleyball.

This sport may be played by all ages and abilities. This is a very common game played in senior centers across the United States and is great for reducing stress and improving cardiovascular fitness. While playing this game, you can increase your flexibility, tone up your muscles, improve your confidence and boost your self-esteem all at the same time.

Chair volleyball rules are the same as indoor volleyball rules. There are six players per team, and the first team to score 15 points wins the game. The first team to win two of three games wins the match and will be declared the victor. In chair volleyball, the bottom of a player’s Photo by Pat Eckert.

Using proper techniques while weight lifting will protect your back. Weight training should always be done in a normal spinal posture. It is advisable to maintain normal lumbar curvature during lifting. It has been shown that executing a lift in a rapid, jerking fashion dramatically increases compression and shear forces on the spine, as well as tension in the paraspinal muscles. This is one of the reasons that resistancetraining exercises should always be performed in a slow, controlled fashion. Remember, chest up and shoulders back. Lifting while twisting should be avoided because it places about three times more stress on the lower back.

body must remain in contact with his or her chair when the ball is in play. If a player’s bottom rises while the point is in play, the opposing team receives a free point. The ball used can be a 20-inch beach ball or a balloon to ensure that anyone can physically play this game.

The game of chair volleyball was started at Woodbridge by Jacquie Steffy and is managed by Jacquie and her husband Dave. There are now about 20 residents who show up eager and ready to play this fun-filled game. They divide into two teams of six, with four subs each ready to rotate in for play. The teams were made up of men and women who are looking for a new adventure, and they have added much laughter and finesse to the game.

The participants in this new sport are looking forward to setting a permanent day and time in order to become an official club. Erald Choate was the official scorekeeper and line judge for the match I watched. The match ended with each team winning two games, so it was a tie. I must say that I have changed my idea of this game and think that the hardest thing to do is stay seated during point play.

I have found that when Louise Rodriguez is in attendance at a game, the laugh meter goes off the chart, and everyone has a great time. I enjoyed watching Louise be competitive and funny and helpful all at the same time. We are lucky to have such a wonderful friend and neighbor here.

I think the residents who don’t know Louise should take the time to look her up.

I would highly recommend that everyone try out this new Woodbridge sport if you’re looking for fun and laughter while toning your arms and upper body. Our book club met at the Clubhouse, as usual, on the first Wednesday of the month. We discussed the book I had suggested, MRS. MIKE, written by Nancy Mars and Benedict Freedman, husband and wife, and published in 1947. MRS. MIKE is something of a “sleeper;” almost everyone agreed that it started out very slowly and then became quite interesting and held their attention. Everyone also enjoyed reading it, which is almost universally true for this group of avid readers. We enjoy variety in our reading, and I have read and enjoyed many books I would not normally have read.

In MRS. MIKE, the heroine, Katherine Mary O’Fallon, was personally known to Nancy Freedman; they shared a common experience of both having sickly childhoods. Katherine was a young and very strong 16-year-old woman who moved from Boston to the wilds of Canada in the early part of the last century because of ill health. Her life became quite intense when she married a handsome Mountie (a sergeant in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) and moved even further into the wilderness.

In 1950, this book was made into a movie. I am going to see if I can rent it and perhaps show it to our group in the Clubhouse. We would welcome anyone else who might enjoy seeing it. The group gave the book a grade of 3.6 on a scale of 0-5.

If you have not done so already, please call 209-824-7581, and the staff will be happy to have your approval.

This Internet portal will be very secure; in fact, more secure than a printed copy of the Directory which might be lost outside of Woodbridge or tossed into the trash, only to be retrieved by someone you never intended to have your personal contact information.

That same information on our Internet portal will be secure and not available to anyone outside of our community. So, please approve this request for your contact information to be included on our Internet portal.

We had a great time on June 5 when we did a blind tasting of pinot noirs.

A brief session was held prior to the tasting to inform the participants about this hardest grape to grow and produce as fine wine.

Wine 101 is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, July 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Clubhouse, we will be honored to feature founder/ winemaker Susan Tipton from Acquiesce Winery in Acampo. She will lead a presentation about white Rhone varietals. Acquiesce is the only winery in the Lodi region that features only white varietals.

Susan has won awards for her Piquol Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Rousanne, Viognier, white blend and Grenache Rose. Also that evening, we will taste some of her fine wines. Everyone is invited to attend, but space is limited to 60 people.

Spring Concert

On May 22, the Woodbridge Singers did their last show before a summer break. The theme was “Yesterday Once More,” a tribute to the Carpenters. The entire multipurpose room was packed, and many very nice comments were passed on to the members.

Sadly, we announced that this would be the last show for our conductor, Chris Seibert. Due to increased commitments with his employment, he announced to the group several weeks ago that he had to step down.

Chris has been a dedicated, talented and extremely humorous leader for us. We wish him and his wife Jill well and will miss his leadership and her beautiful voice. However, the future looks very bright, as we also announced that our new music director will be Elizabeth Cunning. She also brings many years of music experience to the group, and we look forward to more great things.

The talent in this community is amazing, and we invite any and all who wish to join the group to come out and sing. No experience or auditions required. Our first practice for the fall will be Monday, September 9, at 7 p.m. and will continue every other Monday until the end of our season.

Memories of the Fourth Compiled by Bekke Hess

Do you have a nostalgic story to share? Please contact Bekke Hess or any of the journalists listed on page 16. We would love to share your story here in Woodbridge LIFE. When I was a child, on the Fourth of July, my grandfather always used to say, “Summer is almost over.” Well, it sure didn’t feel that way to me. There were a whole two months ahead of me before returning to school. Meanwhile, I thoroughly enjoyed the holiday -- the extended family barbeques, the neighborhood fireworks and the handheld sparklers.

Remember those? There was always a parade in downtown Glenside, PA, with marching bands, old cars and representation by various groups.

Delia Blackwell remembers taking picnics to the park near the library in Livermore to watch the fireworks display. She lived right across the street, so it was an easy trek.

Other Woodbridge residents shared their favorite memories:

Shirley Smith The most spectacular 4th of July for me was when my beautiful, one and only, granddaughter was born! She always loved to swim, as you can see from this picture of her, taken at a school swim meet. By the time she was 13 years old, she had become a certified scuba diver.

(Grandma can’t even tread water!) She made a comment later on that she’d love to swim in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

So-o-o, for her 18th birthday, I took Alicia and her mother for a two-week visit to the warm water.

She fell in love with the diving there and, as we were heading home, stated that she was coming back to attend college – so, she did! She received her Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, and one thing led to another. She is now an Aussie with a skipper’s license and is also the engineer of her dive boat for the tourists. A fairy tale come true!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that she also squeezed in falling in love and getting married! Boy! I sure shot myself in the foot with that 18th birthday trip. Fortunately, I get to see her every three or four years. Ha! She’s happy. I’m happy!

Ron Berger Is the 4th of July important? Of course it is! First and foremost, it’s the date that our country, known as the United States of America, was born. We started with some very distinguished pieces of paper that set the stage for the greatest country on earth.

Second, another distinguished piece of paper was received by me, and that was my discharge from the U.S. Air Force. From the very first minute of July 4, 1959, I became a regular citizen. I was free from the inspections and rules that govern service personnel. Now I just had to re-learn the rules for being a civilian again.

JoEllen Moreno One of my fondest memories is of July 4, 1964, when my little brother was only a year old. My mom only had one sister. Between the two of them, there were nine grandchildren. We were a very close-knit family and spent all of our holidays at our grandparents’ house out in the country near Easton, CA. It was always a time of joy and fond memories for all of us.

My grandparents had chickens on their little farm. That summer, Granny and Grandpa decided to serve fried chicken with all of the usual sides, corn on the cob, potato salad, etc. Well, the chickens were still alive. When it was time to cook, I will never forget my grandfather grabbing two or three of those poor chickens and actually wringing their necks. All the grandkids’ eyes were as wide as saucers, to say the least! Then, we all participated in plucking the chickens and watched my granny cut them up in the appropriate pieces and throw them into the frying pan.

While that was happening, my father was busy preparing to make homemade ice cream for dessert. It was one of the old fashioned kinds that you had to hand churn. He filled the maker with crushed ice and coarse salt and placed a thick towel over the top. To this day, I’m not sure why someone had to sit on top of the towel on the freezer as my father churned it. I will never forget my little brother Hal, in his clunky cloth diaper, sitting on top of that freezer with the biggest smile on his little face, thinking he was the king of the hill, while my father cranked it It makes me smile to this day.

My little brother passed away 13-1/2 years ago at the young age of 36. He is greatly missed, but when I think of this memory, I think back to all of the happy times I was able to share with him and our family. Rest in peace, little brother.

Phyllis Tindell It was certainly a memorable Fourth of July for Phyllis Tindell. She was walking down the road to the local store in Lake Wildwood, California, when she tripped over a large crack. She went sprawling, breaking her nose, her glasses and knocking out her front tooth. She managed to walk to a friend’s house to call her husband (before cell phones!). Of course, their dentist was on vacation, so they arranged to meet with his on-call associate at his office in Lake of the Pines, a 20-minute drive. They sat in the parking lot for about an hour waiting for him to arrive. They finally gave up and drove around the building to the exit. And there was the dentist at the front entrance to his clinic. They had inadvertently been waiting at the back door. Fortunately, Phyllis had kept the tooth in her pocket so it was warm, and the dentist was able to insert it back in the socket. Overall, it was a rather unhappy Fourth of July.

Karen Eastham Karen Eastham lived in Vermont as a child and has nothing but good memories of her 4th of July holidays at her granddad’s farm near Sebago Lake, Maine. He was a real old-fashioned farmer, growing corn and other veggies, apples and blueberries, as well as raising cows, pigs and chickens.

Over the holiday weekend, they often held family reunions with barbequed hot dogs and hamburgers, potato salad and lots of other delicious food, including red, white and blue cupcakes. One favorite feature of the event was the big old coke machine, dispensing a variety of (free) sodas in glass bottles. Additionally, the cousins would pick and sell blueberries to pay for a fun trip to “Old Orchard Beach,” a pier with rides and games, similar to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

What does "Independence Day" mean?

With the Fourth of July fast approaching, I got to thinking, “What does Independence Day mean to me?” If asked this question, I would reply that it represents (1) Battles by people determined to break away from a tyrannical government in an attempt to gain freedoms and liberties that sometimes are taken for granted in today’s world. These rights included the right to choose which religion they wished to follow and a right to a say in government proclamations and new laws to be enforced. (2) Because our world has evolved so quickly and is yet so divided, to me it represents a constant struggle by our country, by so many committed and brave souls, to keep and maintain these rights and freedoms. We need to remember and cherish all of the lives risked and lost in this ongoing struggle. The loss of lives in battles for freedom tested us and made us stronger as a nation.

As far as our little city of Manteca is concerned, I would say that the spirit of patriotism, love of country, and the appreciation for what it took to win our independence and freedom is very much alive and well.

To me, one of the strongest examples of this is to drive up and down any of our major streets on or around a patriotic holiday. I find I am so very moved by the hundreds of American flags flying proudly along the streets we call “home.” What a wonderful tribute this is! And, I have come to find that the same tradition of displaying vast numbers of flags here at Woodbridge exists as well. Just one more reason I am so very proud to be an American!

Next, I sought the opinions of a special couple, Joe and Marie Goins.

I wanted Joe’s answer because of his history and World War II experiences. I asked Marie because of their 65-year long commitment to each other, meaning that they have shared many of life’s experiences, good and bad.

Joe: “I remember back in 1945, President Truman granted independence to the Philippine Islands. I was there for the celebration. Charles De Gaulle was there as well, but Truman couldn’t make it, so he sent the vice president. Knowing how important my country’s winning independence was to me and my fellow Americans, I could only imagine what a wonderful time it was for the Philippines.”

Marie: “On a more personal level, Independence Day reminds me of all of the picnics we’ve enjoyed with our family on the Fourth of July. We would go to a public park, set up our tables, grill our summer foods and watch our children play, always remembering and giving thanks for the freedoms that we had.”

Lastly, I spoke with my neighbor, Chuck Gerow, a retired firefighter. I asked this same question to him. He paused and looked up thoughtfully, and then he said, “There’s only one thought that comes to my mind, Freedom, FREEDOM, FREEDOM! To me, these were such appropriate, heartfelt responses and a great way to put to bed this question for another year. Long live freedom and long wave our American flag!

As I pondered this deep question further, it also occurred to me that it would mean many different things to many different people depending on their ages and life experiences. And so, I decided to ask several people of varied ages just “what” this special date meant to each of them.

Following are their unique perspectives: Burning to hear and reveal more feelings and impressions on this question, I posed the question to my lovely neighbor, Lillian Pauletto: At our home, July Fourth, Independence Day was celebrated more as another Memorial Day. It can be summed up in three words: Family, Freedom and Gratitude. Each year we would go to the Veterans Park, picnic baskets in hand, as a FAMILY. Dad, being very active in the VFW, would be sure we knew that we were celebrating the fact that we lived in a great country of FREEDOM, that many people had fought and sacrificed for us to have this privilege and we needed to never forget to always be GRATEFUL. We would have a great day eating, listening to stories, playing with our friends and then we’d watch the fireworks display. When the day came to an end and we arrived back home, we each got to enjoy a small box of sparklers. We always had such fun and looked forward to this celebration each year. This day was carried over much the same when I had my own family, an enjoyable family time.

HAPPY FOURTH, EVERYONE!” When asked the same question, Robyn Bartley expressed similar ideas: The meaning of the Fourth of July is pretty basic for me. It is a day to celebrate and reflect on our hard-won independence. Two words pretty much sum it up for me: FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE. Freedom to worship God the way we choose. Freedom to make our own choices in life about how we want to live and work. Freedom to speak our opinions on any given subject without fear. July Fourth is our day to celebrate the benefits of INDEPENDENCE from crowns and dictators. Last but not

DAY TRIPPING

Last year my sweetheart and I decided we would try to visit some local points of interest at least once a month. Our goal was to travel no more than an hour-and-ahalf from Manteca.

One of the places we visited was The Western Railway Museum, which is about one hour northwest of Manteca on Highway 12 between Rio Vista and Suisun.

The Western Railway Museum gives you the opportunity to ride historic streetcars and interurban electric trains. There are over 50 historic cars on display, railway exhibits, the museum store and gift shop and the large shaded picnic grounds.

The highlight of our visit was an 11-mile roundtrip ride on authentically-restored railcars. The one-day trip was one of our most interesting outings of the year. The cost per person is nine dollars for age 55 and older, which includes your visit and all the train rides.

Policy and Procedures Committee Report

By Norm Hauser, chair The Policy and Procedures Committee (P&PC) meets at 2 p.m. on the second Monday of each month.

The P&PC met on Monday, May 13, and again on Monday, June 10. Two of the current topics under review (the tournament issue and a review of facility rental guidelines) remain on hold. These issues may be impacted by the findings of a pair of studies currently being conducted on the matter of the state of compliance by our Association with appropriate Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Since the results of those studies are not expected to be available to the Board for some weeks following publication of the July issue of Woodbridge LIFE, the topics remain as suspended old business.

After review and input from both the committee members and other community representatives, a final draft of a policy governing the saving of seats at various Association events has been reviewed by the Board and is now in effect. The topic was initially raised by several of our fellow residents in hopes of creating a reasonably equitable approach to issues that arise as the increasing number of attendees at our activities mirrors the overall growth of our community as a whole. A copy of the final document, which is actually only a segment of a larger set of rules, can be found on our portal’s Community Home Page under the P&PC archive files.

During discussions in both recent months, concerns were expressed about lapses in compliance with some of the rules governing pool use, especially by persons under 18 years of age. Staff is looking at a process that can be used by front desk personnel to help further educate residents on the areas of concern. In the meantime, we ask our residents to review and comply with the appropriate rule sections. The full set of rules, and an abbreviated summary, can be found on the portal under the Community Home page – scroll down to the document folders along the left border, then to the folder for Rules and Regulations.

Our past chair, Denise Drewry, has suggested that we create the position of vice chair for our committee, that we smooth out the language of our committee bylaws and clarify committee member term of service guidelines. Denise submitted suggestions that were reviewed at our June meeting, and final discussions will occur at the July session.

Generally, it is my hope as the committee chair, that we will adhere strongly to the KISS principal by “Keeping It Simple” as we approach our tasks. Certainly, some rules are necessary in order to provide those of us who live in this great place with a basic structure for our interactions throughout our facilities and during our activities. As we continue to grow and eventually virtually double our resident population, that structure will enable our administrative staff to more easily perform their duties in an objective fashion. To that end, we will endeavor to employ a minimum number of rules and a maximum application of common sense and common courtesy as more and more of us take advantage of the extensive yet finite facilities and resources that are available to us here at Woodbridge.

When Roger and I moved from Murphys to Woodbridge in late 2011, we wondered where we would be kayaking in the summer of 2012. We were leaving behind the beautiful mountain lakes and reservoirs, yet we looked forward to finding new waters to explore. The next spring, I read about the Tuolumne River Trust’s Paddle to the Sea fundraising event that offered several opportunities to kayak segments of the Tuolumne and San Joaquin Rivers. Here was a chance to have a guide introduce me to the valley waterways. Sign me up!

“Paddle to the Sea is the Tuolumne River Trust’s annual fundraising paddle-a-thon to protect the Tuolumne River and raise awareness for river stewardship. All funds raised by Paddle to the Sea go directly to support the Tuolumne River Trust’s work to: save the salmon, promote water conservation, and train the next generation of river stewards by connecting kids to the River,” according to its website.

This year the Paddle to the Sea began in the foothills on May 17 with two days of whitewater rafting and continued with kayaks and canoes along seven to 17-mile segments of the Tuolumne and San Joaquin Rivers. Longer sailing segments took others through the Delta and into San Francisco Bay. Finally, on June 22 and 23, sea kayaks finished the course by crossing the Bay and ending at Pier 52 in San Francisco.

Property and Grounds Committee Report

A

s part of the final turnover of the Linear Park (the greenbelt running from north of the sales pavilion to the future park) from Pulte to WOA, Pulte has agreed to replace a few trees and shrubs. The little flags are gone and the park will be healthy and fresh.

Water Works is currently fabricating an even larger custom tool to keep the lake biofilters operating properly. The biofilters still need some repairs. We are evaluating the best approach to these repairs and how to fund them. In late May, Water Works used an aquatic herbicide to control some aquatic plants that had escaped the pods. By the time you read this, the dead plant material should have been removed. In July, we are expecting a comprehensive integrated pod planting report from Water Works.

There is a separate article on page 24 in this issue about the Clubhouse painting.

t the last meeting, the board of Directors approved an authorization request for Property and Grounds Committee (P&GC) members to inspect a long list of items that may need attention per our reserve study. A few of the items include: pool tables, bocce signs, putting greens and nearby artificial turf, poker tables, shower fixtures, ice maker, decorative fences, transformer fencing, railings, pier, trellises and the most noticeable, slurry coat and stripes in the Clubhouse parking lot. After inspection and evaluation, we will seek funding from the board for those items we feel need prompt attention and a list of those items we feel can be deferred until next year. The assignments for the inspections were made at the June P&GC meeting.

The informal safety inspections were discussed at the June P&GC meeting. I’m happy to report that most problems were easy to address, and only a couple will require further investigation.

he board has authorized the upgrading of the audio/visual equipment in the Multipurpose Room. This is a joint task for the Communications Committee and P&GC. Roger Cunning from the Communications Committee has taken the lead. The improvements will expand our ability to use multiple microphones and assist folks with hearing issues. If you would like more information, Roger is the one to contact. P&GC approved the scope of work, equipment and vendor that Roger recommended.

The Pickleball Group brought an issue and about 20 of its members to the June P&GC meeting. The primary question dealt with use of temporary low fencing on the dual pickleball/tennis court. Several side issues were discussed including who could use it, insurance and where and how to store the fencing. The meeting was briefly suspended, and the committee and the pickleball folks inspected the situation.

The Pickleball Group and P&GC, with Executive Director Kayo Armstrong’s approval, passed a compromise motion unanimously.

The group can use the fences and secure them in the sole-use pickleball court. This was a good example of collective wisdom and willingness to compromise resolving a common concern.

Golf Cart Safety Please remember that anyone who does not have a valid driver’s license should not be driving a golf cart. As kids are visiting this summer, please refrain from letting them drive your golf cart. This will ensure their safety as well as that of other residents and guests.

Showers Showers must be taken initially before entering any pool/spa. If using cosmetics, suntan oils, or lotions, showers must be taken prior to each re-entry into the pools/spas.

Food and Beverages Food and beverages may be consumed only in outdoor areas and glass containers are prohibited. Food or beverages are not allowed in the indoor pool or on the surrounding deck area, except for water in plastic bottles.

Toys and Other Devices

· Pool areas are adult-only except during specified children’s swim hours; children under 18 may only be in pool areas during this specified time. Children 4 – 17 may swim or be in the pool areas during specified times and locations, but supervision must be provided at all times by a resident.

Only pool toys provided by the Association may be used.

Equipment for classes may be used only by adults. Use of any device (fins, inner tubes, snorkels, etc.) in the pool must be approved by a member of the Association staff, with the exception of swimmers’ goggles.

Personal radios are permitted, but are to be used only with individual earphones and only on the deck or lounge areas.

· Guests must always be accompanied by a resident unless carrying a paid visitor’s badge.

Diving, Running and Boisterous Behavior are not permitted.

Age Requirements · Children under 4 are not allowed in the pools, and they are only allowed in the surrounding deck areas with direct, immediate adult supervision as long as they do not disturb residents or guests. · Children under 12 are not allowed in the spas. · Diapers or incontinence aids are not allowed in the pools or spas.

Lifeguards Not Provided Lifeguards are not provided and facilities are designated as “Swim at Your Own Risk.” Life buoys and shepherd’s crooks are available at poolside for emergency use.

Dress Code Proper swimwear is required and allowed ONLY in the pool areas.

A cover-up garment is required and limited to direct entry and exit from the pool areas. Footwear worn outdoors is not permitted in the pools or spas.

SPRING GARDEN TOUR

The day was hot, hot, hot, and the proud homeowners kept their yards hydrated for the tour of onlookers. The heat didn’t seem to keep the curious from their rounds. The ten homes that were on the June Spring Garden Tour did not disappoint us. Some years it rains, some years it sears.

Whatever the weather, we manage to proclaim the tour a success year after year. We saw small yards, large yards, courtyards, swimming pools, awnings, pergolas, waterfalls and stamped patios.

There was a good cross-section of outdoor living to be viewed by all who toured.

Included in the price of the tour was a boxed lunch and drink served in a cool respite from the heat. The Multipurpose Room was decorated with give-a-way potted plants placed on each table. The gourmet sandwiches were large and very filling. The time it took to eat lunch in the kitchen area gave us volunteers the opportunity to meet up with friends and acquaintances while cooling down.

The main part of the room was adorned with raffle prizes and the greeting table. I spent the entire day at the Clubhouse from 8:30 a.m. until after the raffle prizes were carted out by beaming winners. The day was filled with grins and giggles, and we all shared in the splendor of the day.

We live in a wonderful community where we can share in the simple joys of a manicured lawn, colored displays of flowers and ferns, calming sounds of water, sheltered alcoves and a cool drink on a hot day. It doesn’t get much better than this.

The sixth annual Wheels of Woodbridge Rods, Roadsters & Cruising Cars car show is coming on July 13, and you are all invited.

This was not done strictly through the efforts of the car club alone, It will be held on Americana Street in front of the new model home though. By partnering with the Women of Woodbridge, many park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. wonderful baked goods are sold to participants and spectators.

This show was started by Pulte as a sales/marketing event with car The Men of Woodbridge Group also steps forward to barbeque hot club assistance and was taken over by the car club at the request of Pulte Marketing starting in its third year. This partnership has brought many prospective buyers to the event through the years and has resulted in at least a dozen home sales. Pulte sales staff takes advantage of the opportunity to accompany potential buyers through the models and provide escorted tours of the Clubhouse. The Ambassador program which involves many or our residents supplements the sales staff during this event.

This is a great sales event for Pulte because they know this is a demographic group of potential buyers who have the financial resources to purchase here at Woodbridge. Roadsters & Cruising Cars Car Show are not doing it this year, the Woodbridge 100 in past years has brought much fun and many smiles to the community and our families, especially when family sees grandma and grandpa attempting to go through a slalom course with the driver blindfolded. Our newest event is the golf cart and bicycle Poker Run that had nearly 40 participants last year.

The car club is just a group of old guys who love cars and have a strong sense of community and volunteer spirit. Our activities have become a model for Del Webb communities throughout the country. Come check out all the classic beauties that will be here at the car show.

The car show is just one of many efforts the car club makes in support of Second Harvest Food Bank. The club has been active in delivering brown bags of groceries throughout San Joaquin County at a moment’s notice when Second Harvest is short-handed. During the Christmas holiday season, club members have picked up donated food at SaveMarts throughout San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties on a weekly basis. Manteca grammar schools have a Christmas food drive, and those goods are picked up and delivered to Second Harvest right before Christmas.

Within Woodbridge, the car club has stepped forward to help when help was needed. When we had the first major theft of electrical wire from the street lights, it was the car club that poured mortar in all the electrical boxes at the base of each street light on Daisywood to preclude future theft. When dead plants needed to be replaced in the median along Del Webb Boulevard, it was the car club that got out with shovel and rake to remove the dead plants to save the Association the cost of removal.

The most rewarding efforts the club does are two fun events that we put on for residents at no cost to them. Although we

Car Show Winners

Horace DiMaggio won Best of Show with his 1941 Chevrolet Master Deluxe Coupe at the Knights of Columbus Car Show held at the Manteca Municipal Golf Course last month. The show, in conjunction with the Antone Raymus Golf Tournament, benefitted the Manteca Children’s Foundation and Give Every Child a Chance program.

Bill Barnhart entered his 1957 Ford Thunderbird in the same competition and won the Police Chief Award.

Horace’s hotrod is what car enthusiasts call a “built car” in that other than the frame and body shell, everything else has been added. Inside and outside restoration was performed in Manteca by Hall’s Classic Body Shop. The coupe has a 350-cubic inch, small-block engine with a 700R4 transmission and a posi-traction rear end. Horace and wife Mary have had this car for nearly two years and have won awards in almost every show they have entered. Horace’s car was chosen Best of Show because it “really stood out from all the others,” according to Vince Hernandez, city councilman.

Bill’s D Model T-Bird sports a 312-cubic inch original engine with a three-speed automatic transmission. According to Bill, the engine has a “tremendous amount of torque and the car rides smoooth.” The car, which is stock original, had a “frame off” restoration around 1999 and was driven very little until Bill bought it nearly three months ago. Police Chief Nick Obligacion said he chose this car for the award because of its “black and white police colors.” Bill feels that the car is more likely “the chief’s dream car just as it was for every other red-blooded guy in the ‘60s.” Bill actually owns two 1957 T-Birds. The second T-Bird, sitting on the hood of Bill’s car (see picture) is an identical model car given to Bill by Woodbridge residents Rennie and Heni Parcesepe.

Clubhouse Painting Update

WePaint, our contractor, tackled the Clubhouse project like true professionals. My fingers hurt just watching them hand-sand and wire-brush the pool fence.

After priming, they handWBL photo by Robert Philis. brushed and rolled the black top coat. The top coat of paint for the fence was originally developed for the refinery industry, and we expect a longer repaint cycle compared to more conventional top coats.

Just to recap how the painting was accomplished: Ramon, our maintenance supervisor, removed the sconce lights and gave them a good cleaning before returning them to the walls after the painters finished; all the surfaces were power washed; caulking was applied; the white trim was given a spray coating, the body coating was sprayed on and finally, the white trim received a hand-rolled second coat. The red doors were sprayed.

Working with WePaint was a delight. The entire crew was professional, courteous and efficient. Like most painting companies, WePaint started with residential jobs and has grown to include larger jobs, but they still do exterior residential jobs. If you are thinking about painting the outside of your house, please consider using WePaint.

WePaint began the building painting near the pool area. They estimated that the pool would need to be closed for two weeks. Twelve guys, proper product, correct tools and hard work got the pool open in FIVE DAYS. They moved on to the front of the Clubhouse and the clock tower. This was the hardest part of the job because they had to use articulated lifts to access the high sections. I actually made inspection rides in the large lift and the smaller ones as well. The view from 65 feet up is super, and they really did apply the paint properly. Under the direct supervision of the “high” painting foreman, I was allowed to paint the black face on the “XII” on the south clock tower face. As of this writing, they were nearly finished with the Clubhouse. By the time you read this, the project will likely be completed. Thank you all for putting up with the disruptions and extra walking.

The snack bar is better than Burger King, and, yes, you can have it your way. Kathy’s service can’t be beat, and she is backed by a fantastic staff of volunteers, including Charlene Haywood, Jane Kerr, Penny Dauler, Sandi Bosse, Jacqueline Andrews and Carol Edgren. This staff is made up of servers, cooks and clean-up people who always have a smile and a friendly word for every patron of the eatery. This is one place you’ll find me eating lunch on a regular basis; my favorite is a hearthealthy grilled chicken salad with a low calorie dressing and jalapeños.

Since the last Woodbridge LIFE edition, we have completed our Mother’s Day Breakfast. It was a great success with lots of compliments. Can you believe we had one, yes, one sausage left over? That was cutting it too close for comfort. We reviewed the event at our last meeting and agreed to fix any problems we incurred. As I’ve said before, each event is a learning experience and we definitely learn something.

Our next cooking event is with the Wheels of Woodbridge car show on Saturday, July 13. Plan to attend our next group meeting on Monday, July 8, at 10 a.m. to get your assignment for the event. Contact Jon Ford, 815-9803, if you can assist with muscle or a pickup truck to get supplies for the event at the Second Harvest Food Bank.

The third Tuesday of each month is our trash pickup at the Highway 120 Bypass and Airport Way interchange. If you can assist or would like to get on a call list for fill-ins, contact Paul Bowers, 825-0129.

Our group is also planning a breakfast for members in the future, so plan to attend our next meeting. Again, our group is open to all male residents within our Woodbridge community.

Men of Woodbridge meets the second Monday of each month at 10 a.m. in the Club Room. All male residents are encouraged to join and have some fun.

WW II Shipbuilding in Stockton

Tod Ruhstaller, Haggin Museum CEO and History Curator, will examine Stockton’s most important wartime industry: shipbuilding. This presentation, a continuation of the Women of Woodbridge Speaker Series, will take place Thursday, July 11, at 2 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Lakeview Clubhouse.

Through period photographs, Tod will explore the city’s nine shipyards, the types of vessels produced and other aspects of the Stockton home front during World War II. There is no fee for this presentation. However, please sign up at the main desk in the Lakeview Clubhouse as we need a count for set-up and preparation of materials.

The next WOW Speaker Series will take place Thursday, July 11 at 2 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Lakeview Clubhouse. Every Woodbridge resident is welcome.

By Sharyl Burgeson Seventeen ladies from the Woodbridge Red Hat chapter recently visited the Jack Tone Ranch in Stockton for a tour of the oldest family-owned horse ranch in California.

The tour included viewing the grounds, stables and memorabilia and listening to the history of its Arabian horses descended from Fadjur (1952 – 1983), the U.S. Reserve National Champion Stallion in 1968.

The outing ended with a box lunch catered from a local deli on the ranch grounds.

Claudia Watkins headed or “queened” a Red Hat chapter in Sonora for six years and, when she moved to Woodbridge six years ago, invited 10 ladies to lunch in hopes of starting a new chapter. Within a month, Claudia had 25 interested ladies and a Woodbridge Red Hat charter.

“The society is not a charitable or fundraising group. We’re an age group of 50-plus, and we want to forget the ‘must do’ atmosphere. We just want to be frivolous and have fun with interesting activities,” said Claudia, queen of the group.

As queen, Claudia said the hard part is keeping activities interesting, and the sad part is having to keep membership at a manageable number of 25.

“We have a waiting list now. I wish I could encourage someone to start another group within the community. The interest is there; we just need another leader,” she lamented.

Future activities include Janice Buckingham and Marilyn Armstrong hosting an August luncheon at the Oakdale Country Club which has recently opened to the public. Claudia Watkins is organizing a private tour of a Victorian mansion with lunch following in Lodi. Sis Decker is exploring the possibility of touring the Old Tracy Theater with its live music and movies.

Past activities have included tea and dessert at Stockton’s Haggin Museum, attending live musicals in Stockton and Modesto, touring wineries, bowling and luncheons or picnics.

According to Wikipedia, the Red Hat Society is a social organization originally founded in 1998 by Fullerton, California, artist Sue Ellen Cooper. Sue Ellen gave a friend a 55th birthday gift of a red bowler and a copy of Jenny Joseph’s poem, “Warning.” The opening lines of the poem read: “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me.”

After spreading by word of mouth, the society first received national publicity in 2000. As of 2011, there were over 40,000 chapters in the United States and 30 other countries.

n May 15, the six recipients of the Women of Woodbridge scholarships were recognized at their respective school’s Senior Awards evening.

Carol Edgren presented scholarships to the East Union and Sierra recipients; Chris Russell awarded the scholarships at Manteca High School.

he selection process included a paper screening at each high school which narrowed the applicants down to three. Carol Edgren and Linda Little interviewed all of the candidates and selected the recipients based on academic strength, involvement in school activities and community service and financial need.

VETERANS MEMORIAL

On a sunlit day in the North Park section of Woodbridge by Del Webb, we see a young boy running to his grandparents with the happy news that he found his grandfather’s name engraved on a brick. That brick is part of many that surround a six-sided granite memorial supporting an America flag flying 35 feet above the ground in the wind. An older couple is seen walking away from the memorial, sporting smiles and knowing that their engraved brick will be associated with other veterans who served this great country.

This is the setting that the Veterans of Woodbridge hope will come to life during the latter part of 2014, as the park in the new north section of Woodbridge is constructed. The memorial will not only support our present donors, but it will have room for future Woodbridge veterans who want to be remembered.

This rendering, provided by residents Ray and Pepper Noble, is the artists' concept of how the core of our Veteran’s Memorial may look. There are many residents who are veterans or who have loved ones who were veterans, and these residents are encouraged to purchase an engraved brick to be donated to this wonderful memorial project.

A Gathering of the Greatest

Pictured on the front page of this edition of Woodbridge LIFE are some of our World War II veterans as they share stories about their experiences during that war.

Warren Atherton served in the U.S. Navy beginning in 1943.

He was a machinist mate aboard the USS Coronis. His homeport during the war was Norfolk, VA, but his ship patrolled the entire Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Henry Bartolucci was continuously deferred from the war until 1944 when he was 24 with a 9-month-old son. He joined the US Army Artillery, specializing in the 105-mm Howitzer, launching huge 4-inch diameter shells up to 7 miles with great accuracy. He served in Manila, Philippians and at Yokohama, Japan following the Japanese surrender.

Tom deBord volunteered for Army Air Corps (AAC) pilot training in 1943. He trained at four different bases but was told before finishing that the AAC had more pilots than they needed. So, he volunteered for B-29 Flight Engineering. The war ended and the AAC shutdown the program, discharging him without a commission. Lots of training!

Ralph Donges was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 and shortly thereafter was transferred into the Army Air Corps.

He was stationed at Hickam Air Base near Honolulu. His specialty was weather service, communicating forecast information to aircrews across the Pacific Ocean.

Jack Furrer served in the Army Air Corps during the war as a B-17 bomber pilot in Europe. He flew 29 bombing missions over Germany and then returned to his home field in England. He was successful despite his aircraft being a slow moving target for enemy fighters and anti-aircraft weapons.

Boice Glassey was a U.S. Marine and in 1942 served on the island of Oahu at Barber’s Point Naval Air Station. This was a new base constructed following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and it was used to train aircraft carrier pilots.

Boice was an aerial gunner providing gate security. He also served in the morale-boosting duty of playing football as a tackle in competition between the various service teams in Hawaii.

Joe Goins was just 18, but in November or 1944, he enlisted into the US Army. As a member of the Infantry, this young Oklahoman, an M-1 Rifleman, was sent to Leyte, Philippines just a month following the Allied invasion. He then went to Mindanao and Luzon, clearing all the islands of combatants. While in Manila, he was part of a parade featuring Generals Douglas MacArthur and Charles de Gaulle.

Robert Hedrick served mostly in a training capacity. Following graduation from Tracy High School in 1945, he entered the U.S. Army and began infantry training. Prior to finishing

training, atomic bombs were used, and the war in the Pacific quickly came to an end. Rather than deploying, he remained stateside as a mail clerk, a very popular job to those serving.

Chuck Malley served in the U.S. Navy beginning in 1942.

He was a machinist mate aboard a light cruiser, the USS Detroit. As he attended to his machinist duties below deck, his ship took part in the Pacific battles of the Aleutian Islands, Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and the Philippines.

Jim Mayhew joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard aircraft carriers in the Pacific Theater of War. He kept a teak segment from a carrier’s flight deck that had been damaged and replaced. He also collected several Japanese artifacts from sunken ships and beaches in the Western Pacific.

Daniel McCurry joined the U.S. Navy, served six years and sailed on patrol in three different oceans -- the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Indian oceans. He was a signalman contributing to the vital need of communicating essential wartime information. He also served as an armed guard, when needed.

Angel Navarro joined the US Army in 1945 and volunteered for Jump School, landing in the famous 82nd Airborne Division. He drove ambulances for his division. Angel had three brothers in the Army and two sisters in the Women’s Army Corps; his parents had six star flags displayed in their window. They all returned home safely following the war.

Jim Riggs joined the US Marines in 1942 as a M-1 Rifleman.

He entered Pacific combat and was part of that historic island hopping strategy to win the war. His first island was New Guinea; then he faught at Cape Gloucester, New Britain; his next major battle was at Peleliu, Palau; and finally he helped control Okinawa until December 1945 after Japan surrendered.

J.J. Seller joined the U.S. Army at age 18 in 1945. He was an Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) Specialist, serving in the Pacific. He went to Nagasaki to defuse unexploded bombs that were in the rubble following the atomic bomb.

JJ considers himself lucky to have accomplished that plus more EOD work during the Korean Conflict without serious injury.

Lynn Whitaker joined the U.S. Marines in 1943 and helped fight the war in the Pacific. He served in electronics, specifically avionics or aircraft electronics. He experienced battles in the Philippines and at Okinawa.

There may be other residents who also served during World War II but were unavailable for inclusion in this article. The entire community of Woodbridge salutes and offers a grateful thank you to all of our World War II veterans.

These fine gentlemen who went to war were very united in a couple additional thoughts they wished expressed. Besides the warriors, there was an entire generation of heroes at home. Men, women and children did everything they could to contribute and fuel our nation’s war-making machine and helped to bring their efforts to a successful end. This great generation did without for the better good of our nation.

Lastly, these World War II veterans thank everyone in Woodbridge for how well the WWII vets are treated and acknowledged. They are proud to have served you and our nation.

At school we Girl Scouts helped collect the quarters and dimes the students brought in to be used to buy war bonds: $18.75 would be $25 at maturity.

t was vacation time in the summer of 1941, and my dad wanted to climb White Face Mountain in the Adirondacks. Off we went from Rochester in our ’36 Chevy over to Lake Placid. It was a beautiful day as my mother and I waited down below, never aware that it would be our last vacation for many years.

Citizens were encouraged to grow their own food. The Victory Garden was implemented in many back yards. We grew green and wax beans, carrots, tomatoes and onions. It was not a great stretch for most families as our parents were only one generation away from being farmers, anyway. My mother and her mother congregated in our kitchen to can peaches and pears and tomato and grape juice to be used later during the winter.

I

That fall I entered a carefree second grade. Thanksgiving dinner with aunts and uncles was terrific as usual. Then as December rolled around, we were all as stunned as the rest of the world when we heard about the horrendous attack on Pearl Harbor.

Right away the country rose to the challenge. I had four cousins who joined the Army. Their families placed a small flag with a star on it in the window. A gold star meant that their young man was killed in action. Young women took the place of the men who went into the service by working in the airplane factories and elsewhere. We all remember Rosie, the riveter.

M

y mother joined others volunteering in the Red Cross effort. She went to meetings and learned first aid and CPR. My greatgrandmother knit warm woolen mittens that were sent to soldiers in cold wintertime Europe.

My dad was an air raid warden. When the sirens went off at night, everyone had to turn off all the lights in the house, and he would walk the streets to check up on the neighbors. My aunt wanted to play cards or read a book in the evening (no TV back then), so she had to install black-out blinds in the kitchen window. I also remember hearing of townspeople in Belgium who placed lanterns in the fields outside their village so the enemy planes would bomb the fields thinking it was the village.

It was a devastating time for the entire country, but we all knew that defending ourselves in spite of the loss of our young soldiers was the right thing to do for us and for future generations.

O

ne day after seeing reports of battles and casualties throughout the entire newspaper, I remember asking my dad, “What did they put in the newspaper before the war?” I just couldn’t imagine. He replied, “Oh, fires and murders and baby pageants.” That seemed to satisfy me.

Ray and I recently went back to Lake Placid, and we climbed White Face Mountain. It is just as serene as ever. That’s the good thing about time.

Paddle to the Sea Fundraising Event

We all did with less butter and sugar and meat. Oleo margarine was invented to take the place of butter. Early on, the customer had to stir in the yellow color at home. Copper pennies were now minted of different alloys. Shoes, gas and tires were also rationed. No new cars were made during the war so that the factories could make tanks, planes and jeeps.

Our old Chevy would have to do for the duration. Lots of times, I heard the expression, “for the duration.” The new ’47 Olds looked just like the ’41 Olds my dad bought before the war.

O

ur third grade classroom had the addition of three young children who came to the United States from England to live with local families so they would be safe from the destruction of the war. Eastman Kodak sponsored them, and so they were called KodaKids. Last summer at my 60th high school reunion, we were thrilled to be joined by one of those “kids.”

Everyone pitched in, but what could the children do to help with the war effort? That’s when I saw my brother coming down the street, pulling his little red wagon looking for scrap metal the neighbors might donate to be melted down and used for tanks and bullets. Housewives recycled tin cans and newspapers. My cousin made a huge ball from the tinfoil wrappers from her father’s cigars.

As a young girl in fourth grade, our teacher gave us the opportunity to knit six-inch squares from scrap wool yarn to be fashioned together to make afghans for the soldiers. Our little fingers had to be very careful to start with only three stitches, and increase and decrease diagonally to make the square ending also with three stitches.

recall my Sunday school class was encouraged to make bandages for the soldiers. The teacher used a clean white sheet and tore it into strips three inches wide so that we children could roll them into

For my first adventure last year, I chose to kayak the 12-1/2 mile segment from Dos Reis to the Stockton Yacht Harbor. Kayaking this portion of the San Joaquin River was a major workout due to the strong head wind we faced all day, as well as the incoming tide later in the afternoon. Leslie Anderson joined me for this endurance challenge. Leslie’s mother, Diane Hadley, is a Woodbridge resident living in my neighborhood.

This year I signed up again and had a very different experience. We put in (started) at Old Fisherman’s Club in Modesto. Our take out (end) destination was 10 river miles upstream near Durham Ferry Road. We enjoyed a very relaxing time on the river. No head wind. No incoming tide. However, we frequently “bottomed out” due to the low water. We need more water! Our experience reinforced the serious need for water conservation.

Leslie Anderson joined me again this year, as well as a friend, Darcy Davis, from Murphy’s. Next year maybe you will want to join me. You don’t need a kayak or canoe of your own. Garden Tasks for July

Wow. We just made it through our first heat wave, and things got so bad for my hydrangeas that we ended up buying a Koolaroo Shade Triangle (ordered from Ace Hardware in Ripon) to provide some afternoon shade for the poor flowers. Doesn’t look that great, but the shade is helping the afternoon fainting a lot! Normally I don’t mind if the leaves get a little crispy, which happens with many shade tolerant plants, but when it causes your blooms to fade faster because of the intense sun and heat, you’ve got to do something. These are “Endless Summer” hydrangeas, so they’ll fade and get new blooms during the summer anyway. However, the less sun on them, the better the blooms will last. Sadly, the shade triangle only comes in one size, 16' x 16' x 16' so you have to do some creative wrapping to make it work.

With this heat and more to come, you can give your plants an extra drink of water in the morning if it’s your day to water. Even after sunrise, be aware that the snails will come out to munch within an hour of watering.

In general, here’s some advice I’ve learned the hard way – if your plant isn’t doing well in its current location from too much sun, too many rodents, poor soil, too much wind or dust – move it or give it away. When helping a friend out with a lemon tree the other day, I learned from the UC Davis citrus publication that you do not allow a lot of dust to stay on the plant.

Another thing I try to do because of our drip irrigation is to occasionally water the plant from above to clean off dust and insects. Some plants, particularly plants like gardenias, also enjoy higher humidity and to accomplish that I turn my hand sprinkler on “mist” and spray towards my gardenias and azaleas once a week.

Be considerate of our feathered friends and put water in your bird baths particularly during the hot spells. I’ve noticed more robins around our backyard now because we got rid of the finch feeder.

Sandi Larson If your lawn is showing brown spots, try running the sprinkler when it’s windy and see where your water is going. It’s likely that your water is being carried away by the wind.

Adjust your watering time, but be aware that the City of Manteca says the most demand for water is around 7 a.m., so try to water before or after that time if you want optimum exposure from your irrigation. I also just found out that our irrigation controller has a “non-volatile memory,” thanks to Barry Carter.

That means if we have a power outage, the system won’t revert to the factory settings. Remember to mow your lawn a little higher than normal so you have less evaporation of water.

Have you visited your local nursery for new color? There are some new plants of old favorites such as the sun series of Million Bells and the Sun Parasol Mandevilla climbing annual (unfortunately here it’s an annual and not a perennial, unless you can protect it from the frost). This mandevilla is still a tropical plant so you will need a little protection from late afternoon sun and regular feeding.

I recently gave a talk on the Gardens of Washington and Western Canada for the Women of Woodbridge Speaker Series and want to thank all of you who attended. At that time, I didn’t have sufficient knowledge of whether we could grow dogwoods in Manteca successfully. I just saw the article in the Manteca Bulletin regarding the yard in the French Collection which had a dogwood in the Cherokee series. That being said – if you have sufficient shade under the other trees, you can grow dogwoods as long as you give them well-drained soil, very little direct light other than dappled morning sun and plenty of moisture. I’ve seen them for sale at Silverado in Ripon and, I believe, at Morris Nursery in Riverbank, also.

If you have blooming or soon-to-beblooming plants, this is a good month to fertilize.

Remember that azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias need plenty of water this month as they begin to set buds for next spring or the fall.

Perennials that are in bloom in July are agapanthus, Shasta daisy and fuchsia. Annuals are impatiens, petunias, zinnias and lobelia. Many bulbs are in bloom this month including daylily, dahlia, tuberous begonia and lily. Trees in bloom this month are crepe myrtle and silk trees.

Earwigs, slugs and snails are still a problem this summer. You think they’ve left your garden, but that’s not the case. Be sure to continue staking your tomatoes to make sure they have enough support to hold that heavy fruit.

Lou George bench dedicated

About $3,600 was raised by the Woodbridge community to purchase and install the bench plaque.

Numerous residents gathered at the official dedication of the Lou George Memorial Bench.

Lou George was known for his recycling efforts, having donated more than $21,000 to the American Cancer Society.

On May 18, 2013, Kimball High School was the site for “Relay for Life” in Tracy . Duane Becker, a resident of Woodbridge since May 2012, ran in the event as a survivor. This was his sixth time to participate in “Relay for Life," but it was the first time he walked in this area. Duane had his cancer surgery and treatments in 2007 and 2008.

Duane’s neighbors and yoga class members donated money for the American Cancer Society.

Due to the generous Woodbridge contributions, Duane raised $555 and was third highest contributor for his team at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Tracy.
