I

have loved the view of Lake Rockwell since I moved to Woodbridge. When I decided to have some work done on my Ford truck, back in 2009, I had to replace the tailgate before it could be painted. Since Woodbridge is the last place I plan to live, I immediately thought of having my favorite lake scene painted on the new tailgate.

Larry Alvarez of the Airbrush Shop in Modesto did the painting. He has been airbrushing professionally since 1990 and specializes in custom graphics on cars, trucks and motorcycles; on motorcycle and batting helmets; on catcher and goalie masks; and on murals and team banners.

Larry came out and took several pictures of Lake Rockwell and the Lakeview Clubhouse and went back to Modesto with my truck’s tailgate to work on.

I have had the truck for over forty years. It was originally my daily driver for work. I wrecked it pretty badly about fifteen years ago and the insurance company wanted to total it but my insurance man convinced them not to. Thank goodness!

I have shown the truck in a couple of car shows here at Woodbridge and everyone loves the tailgate. I have the truck in a shop right now having some more changes done to it.

elcome to the June edition of Woodbridge LIFE. I am proud to accept my new role as editor of our community’s monthly paper and liaison to its publisher, Woodbridge Owners Association. I have been part of the Woodbridge LIFE team since the paper’s inception in late 2011 and pledge to maintain its high standards, enhance residents’ lives and provide informative articles and lively features.

This month’s theme, “Art is all around you,” is reflected in a variety of stories, each with a different perspective of where art may be found.

The photo of Bob Hall’s pickup tailgate on the front page not only depicts beautiful Lake Rockwell and the Lakeview Clubhouse but it also extols the “Woodbridge lifestyle,” the reason many of us choose to live in this resort-style community.

Mike Spence’s article about artist/ illustrator Norman Rockwell tells how our community was themed after Rockwell and his art.

Everywhere you look street names, old-fashioned streetlights, even the descriptions of model homes reflect small-town New England and Rockwell’s life experiences. See Mike's story on Page 10.

Master Gardener Sandi Larson believes there is an artist in every gardener and shares stunning art she discovered in Bay Area and Phoenix gardens. See Sandi’s article on Page 11.

The Artists and Crafters showcased work by many talented residents in mid-May. Photos on Page 36 show paper crafts to quilting, painting to zentangle drawing, even exquisite wood working, and reveal Woodbridge’s no longer hidden talents.

Turn to Page 19 to see octogenarian softball player George Moffatt’s original color portrait of San Francisco Giants catcher, Buster Posey. Also on the softball page are three cleverly written fight songs penned by resident fan Debby Hickey.

These and more articles in this edition demonstrate that art is truly all around us. Some think “Art is beauty.” Others claim “Art is love.” Still more believe “Art is life.” I think art comes in many forms. It can be aesthetic (like paintings and sculptures) or functional (like well-designed furniture or sleek automobiles), but art is also a way of being, an approach to life. Art can bring us together, reduce stress, entertain, educate, cultivate friendships and change our lives.

I particularly like the following “Seven Keys to an Artful Life” and am passing them on to you - good advice for all of us!

ur community-wide garage sale was another huge success. I believe we saw more traffic come through the community than ever before.

I’m sure all of you made some folks feel they got some really good deals. Thanks to all who participated. Our next garage sale will be November 1.

What a show Mama’s Wranglers put on for our Woodbridge residents. They were a group of five (mother, three daughters and one son).

A lot of us thought the mother was the older sister; that’s how great she looked. They sang, played fiddles, clogged and the 12-year-old daughter yodeled.

They received standing ovations through the show and had a very emotional ending with raising the American flag and singing the song, “I’m Proud to be an American” which earned them another standing ovation.

Watch for them as they will perform again for us.

The community champagne brunch brought out some of our residents to mingle with future Del Webb owners.

All enjoyed a lavish brunch buffet that featured mimosas, champagne, orange juice, coffee, scones, a variety of muffins, sausage, bacon, two kinds of scrambled eggs and freshly made waffles with every kind of topping you could imagine.

Charlie Fairchild from the sales office welcomed and thanked everyone for participating and gave a little information about what the future will hold for newcomers at Woodbridge.

Our sixth-year Clubhouse anniversary was celebrated on Cinco de Mayo with cake and ice cream served by our Lifestyle Committee. They served close to 200 residents.Thank you, Jacqueline Andrews, Sandi Bosse, Penny Dauler, Kaye

by Patti Barnhart. Thank you to both groups for putting on an evening of entertainment for us.

Carla Marquardt’s Strummin’ Wonders Ukulele group did a patriotic sing-along so all residents could join in their program. Our ukulele players have come a long way. They just keep getting better and better with each program.

A

t the May 20 meeting, the board approved several renewal agreements for various maintenance functions throughout the community, reviewed a proposal for a new provider of collection services, welcomed several new members to various WOA committees and approved changes to the community’s Rules and Regulations. More information on the committee appointments can be found in WOA Update on Page 4, and the changes to the Rules and Regulations are addressed in the executive director update on Page 4.

Also in May, Resident Directors Roger Cunning and Garry Dudley hosted the monthly Town Hall meeting, offering residents the opportunity for open dialog and transparency of the day-to-day workings of the Board. Major topics discussed in this meeting included the future of discussion groups on the portal and a recent Architectural Review Committee decision. In addition, various residents shared praise for fitness partner Paul Serpa and WOA fitness programs, along with concerns regarding community landscaping and Clubhouse music.

The Town Hall meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance and a brief overview of the WOA’s structure. Roger and Garry used the parallel of our national structure to illustrate the WOA’s governance.

Just as our nation is governed as

a Republic, so is the Woodbridge Owners Association. In very basic terms, a Republic is Rule of Law, rather than a Rule of Majority.

Association members have elected resident directors to govern the community by representing the membership, equitably enforcing the current rules of the community (CC&Rs, By-Laws, Design Guidelines, Rules and Regulations, etc.) and making decisions in the best interest of not just a handful of residents, but, rather, the organization as a whole. Similar to shareholders in a corporation, WOA members do not make every daily decision, but rely on the officials they’ve elected to represent their best interest – as a whole. Certainly there are mechanisms in place to change the Law, and for a healthy, civilized and successful organization to thrive, these changes must be approached with objectivity, care and respect for one another.

As a real-time example, the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) recently approved an application which generated some disagreement by others in the community. In this case, the “Law,” (WOA Design Guidelines) was followed diligently by the committee in making a prudent and fair decision, and hence, the board supported the actions of the ARC. Because several residents expressed disagreement with the Law (Design Guidelines) in this case, the mechanism to affect change was triggered. The board responded

New Yoga Class Starting

or those of you who love yoga, we’re starting up an evening yoga class. The new class will begin Tuesday, June 3, and will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room.

Be sure to wear comfortable, non-constricting clothing and bring a yoga mat if you have one.

If you do not have a mat, they will be available in class. There is a $5 per class fee.

Rather than allowing the community to become divided by unproductive reaction, the board chose to utilize the proper mechanism for change with objectivity, care and respect.

If residents have comments to be considered by the Design Guidelines Review Task Force, please forward these to Roger, Garry or Kayo.

The second major discussion of the Town Hall meeting revolved around structural changes to the Woodbridge website discussion groups. In the May issue of Woodbridge LIFE, changes were announced that would provide more specific discussion group topics and eliminate the opportunity for misinformed gossip and unfounded attacks that often appear in the general discussion group. Personal attacks on the portal are not only disrespectful to other residents, staff and the community as a whole, but they also create a significant liability risk for the WOA. While Homeowners Association attorneys and website providers throughout the country caution strongly against providing website discussion groups because of the liability concern, Woodbridge leadership chose to allow this opportunity, exercising faith in the civility of its residents.

Because recent online discussions have crossed the line from sharing personal views to attacking others for their views, changes must be made to the discussion group structure. While the inappropriate

messages are posted by only a very small number of residents, the entire community is affected by the liability risk and measures are being taken to eliminate it.

The portal is a WOA property, just like Woodbridge LIFE and the community’s amenities. The same Rules and Regulations regarding appropriate behavior apply to the website no differently than other community facilities. Unfortunately, when the “Golden Rule” isn’t followed voluntarily out of common courtesy and respect for others, it must be mandated and enforced.

Currently the board is reviewing the portal discussion group issue with WOA legal counsel, Riverside Management and staff to determine the best solution. The board’s desire is to continue to allow the open dialog opportunity; however, it will make its final decision based on the best interest of the community as a whole.

The WOA Board of Directors values your feedback on all items affecting your lifestyle here at Woodbridge as it is this input that shapes the community. As always, Resident Directors Roger Cunning and Garry Dudley, as well as the other directors, welcome your comments and questions personally at Board and Town Hall meetings and through the portal’s “Ask a board Member” feature. The Woodbridge 100 put on by the Wheels of Woodbridge was such fun to watch with golf carts going through a course of twist and turn and a survivor race (the driver is blindfolded). We had lots of laughs watching all the participants going through the course. We also had Officer Jason Massey and Max with other Manteca K-9 officers give us a demonstration during the opening of the Woodbridge 100. What the officers can get their K-9s to do is so very impressive.

Our very first happy hour of the year was attended by over 160 residents. Everyone brought their best appetizers to share and we once again listened to DJ Dave Badilla. Dave has opened the happy hour season since 2008.

THE FIT FIVE

I

n the previous article, I discussed which five machines were the best and how to correctly use those machines. This article will deal with why those machines are the best.

LAT PULL The lat pull machines help to strengthen the large muscles in the upper back (latissimus dorsi, teres major, lower trapezius and rhomboid) and, in the upper arm – the biceps. These muscles help to support the upper spine and help the ladies’ shoulders look great in spaghetti strap dresses!

CHEST PRESS This machine helps to strengthen the muscles of the upper torso (pectoralis major, anterior deltoid or shoulder) and the back of the arm – the triceps.

This exercise involves both the elbow and shoulder joints, allowing you to move more weight at one time, therefore burning more calories and helping to shape the back of the arms.

BACK EXTENSIONS The back extension machine works the muscles in the lower back (erector spinae and deep spine erectors). As their names state, these muscles help to support the lower spine and also aid in balance and stability.

ABDOMINALS This machine works to strengthen your abdominal muscles (erectus abdominus, internal and external obliques). A strong erectus abdominus helps to keep you upright and strong internal obliques assist with breathing. These muscles also aid in balance and stability.

GLUTE MACHINE The glute machine works to strengthen your upper legs and backside (gluteus maximus, hamstrings and quadriceps). Not only do these muscles work on balance and stability, they are some of the largest muscles in the body, so they burn more calories per rep than any other machine.

NEW GROUP: Healing Hearts

We are a new group at Woodbridge for widows and widowers who would like support and camaraderie with fellow residents also going through a difficult time.

My name is Alice Corriea and I am also a facilitator in a grief support group. So many times men and women who have lost someone have a feeling of loneliness and disconnection.

And many times when the services are over, grief support class is done and all the family and friends go home, we are left to feel so alone.

If you would like to join us, please come and check out our

group. Hopefully, you will enjoy the time with others going through the same feelings you are, and you'll join us every month. It would be so beneficial to the group and each individual to feel like they are not alone in this journey back to feeling good again.

Please join us every fourth Monday of the month (which began May 26) in the Quincy Room at the Clubhouse from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

t’s June, school is out and summer is beginning. Love the warm days to come. Because this article is written by May 10 for the June Woodbridge LIFE, I will report on our BIG event next month.

A few minor changes to the calendar are being made. Zentangle is moving to the second Monday of the month. Hopefully those already attending will continue to do so and maybe this day change will bring in more doodlers. This means Margo Flanagan’s watercolor class is also moving. That class will now be on Friday but which one? Margo knows and it is also noted in the classroom.

amara Supremo presented her selection for our discussion, A RIVER IN THE SKY by Elizabeth Peters. Tamara chose this novel because the author has a reputation for accuracy and it is an interesting story. Ms. Peters was actually a woman named Barbara Mertz, who was born in Illinois in 1927, received her doctorate in Egyptology from the University of Chicago, married and had children. Ms. Peters was a prolific writer who wrote under this pseudonym as well as the name of Barbara Michaels. As Ms. Peters, she wrote adventurous novels usually taking place in Egypt. Perhaps she wrote about the life she wished she had been able to lead but was unable to pursue since females were generally not encouraged in scientific fields.

A RIVER IN THE SKY was wellreceived by our group of 11. Since this book fits almost in the middle of a series forming a continuing story, many stated they wanted to at least read the first book in the series, CROCODILE ON THE SANDBANK, to learn how the main characters met, married, formed a family and began their adventures. The book is elegantly written from the point of view of the female lead character, strongwilled Amelia Peabody Emerson, and the main characters form her 'family.' The story is a mystery to be solved by Amelia and her family and takes place in 1910 in what is today modern Israel but in 1910 was part of the Ottoman Empire. It is an easy read, fun and sometimes quite humorous. It is a simple novel with very little violence and could be read by young teenagers. A good summer read.

“That’s Amore” turned into a humorous rendition as crowd and singers tried to sway in rhythm to the music together. Especially touching were vocal harmonies of “Tammy” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” The doo-wop trio of Jon Ford, Paul Hanz and Jack Dauler sang “Goodnight Sweetheart” to thunderous applause!

The event ended with a nostalgic look at “then and now” photos of choir members from their teenage years and as they look today. (Ask Jack Dauler how he managed to fit into the same Navy uniform then and now!)

Norman Rockwell, an American Inspiration

A

s most of you know, Woodbridge is themed after Norman Rockwell. The sales pavilion is on Americana Street. Our Stockbridge Park is the namesake of Stockbridge, MA, where Norman Rockwell spent the last 25 years of his life and is the permanent home of the Norman Rockwell Museum. Our Lake Rockwell is a tribute to the man. That our lake is stocked and a “fishin’ hole” is a tribute to the commissioned illustrator of such books as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. The layout of Woodbridge is decidedly small-town New England by design and architecture, reflecting Norman Rockwell’s life experiences.

Born in 1894 in New York City, Norman Rockwell was the second son to Jarvis and Anne Rockwell. By the age of 14, Norman had decided to become an artist. He left high school and attended the National Academy of Design and later, the Art Students League. At age 16, he accepted his first commission to illustrate the covers for four greeting cards.

times (divorced once and widowed once) and had three sons by his second wife, Mary.

Norman tried to enlist in the Navy during WW I. He was rejected at his first physical as too thin (6’ 0,” 140 lbs). He was sent home with a box of food, including bananas. He was inducted the next day and served his tour as a military artist. At age 21, Norman and his first wife, Irene, moved to New Rochelle, NY, the first of his small town residences, where he remained for the next 24 years. He moved to Arlington, VT, in 1939 and remained there until moving to Stockbridge, MA, in 1953.

Norman Rockwell died of emphysema in Stockbridge in 1978.

Norman Rockwell was a prolific artist. His body of work includes more than 4,000 pencil sketches, drawings, charcoal sketches and oil paintings.

That’s six items every month over a seventy-year professional career. At age 18, Rockwell received his first commission to illustrate a book, Tell Me Why: Stories about Mother Nature. At age 19, he was

appointed as art editor for Boys’ Life, the official publication of the Boy Scouts of America.

Norman’s continuing work on the Boy Scout’s calendars continued into the 1970s. At age 21, Norman shared a studio with a cartoonist working for the “Saturday Evening Post,” Clyde Forsythe. A little bit of the cartoonist rubbed off on Norman, as reflected in hints of editorial cartoons in his later works. Clyde helped Norman get his first commission for the cover of the “Saturday Evening Post” in 1916. Those commissions continued for the next 47 years and included more than 300 covers. During WW II, Norman sold war bonds; on one trip, he helped sell over $16 million worth. In 1943, there was a fire in Norman’s studio and all of his early works were consumed. The archives of the “Saturday Evening Post,” the Boy Scouts and others preserve copies of just the paintings.

Norman created his own way of developing his works, especially commissioned covers. He would conceptualize an idea and then rough out a pencil sketch.

Research and some road trips to the site to be depicted followed. Next, models were brought to his studio, staged and photographed to reflect the intended scene. Over 20,000 of these photos remain. Then, a charcoal sketch of the final version was completed. The final oil painting was sized for the intended commissioned cover; hence, Norman was considered an illustrator and not a serious artist by some.

Norman was well compensated for his works, but the contemporary art community gave him little respect. His works were referred to as kitsch style -- lowbrow, pleasantly distasteful. A new derogative word was coined to describe his works,”Rockwellesque” or excessive sentimentalism.

In 2012, Norman’s painting, Saying Grace, sold at auction for $46M, not bad for something pleasantly distasteful.

In 1977, for “Vivid and affectionate portraits of our country,” Norman Rockwell received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States of America’s highest civilian honor.

W

e are celebrating art this month in our Woodbridge LIFE. What a great idea! I went into the windmills of my mind thinking about what I could incorporate into my gardening article that related to art!

I think art and gardening are great together. In every gardener, there is an artist. How do I know that? Have you ever walked through a garden of an artist? I am amazed how an artist can plan a garden to be a work of art.

Art and gardening go together so well that the Manteca Garden Club has invited the Manteca Artist Guild to participate in their Garden Tour for the past three or four years. We get to see lovely gardens, listen to a harpist and view beautiful works of art, jewelry and pottery. I think it’s a great combination.

Another venue that I’ve come to really appreciate is Filoli Gardens in Woodside. One of my favorite events at Filoli is their Mothers’ Day Flower Show. The folks at Filoli invite floral designers to set up tables each year and they interpret a theme that Filoli chooses. This year the theme was Broadway Musicals. I have attended this event several times and the designs are amazing! It really is a sight to behold. Breathtaking actually! That’s my idea of art and gardening.

Several years ago we were privileged to go to Monet’s Garden in Giverny,

France. Claude Monet had to be the KING of gardening and art. How his art has influenced the world! His gardens were the backdrop and inspiration for many of Sandi Larson his works of art. Think the famous “Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies.” Monet was the leader of the Impressionist movement. I had never seen his works of art in person until several years ago when there was a traveling exhibit of the pictures Monet painted in his later years. I believe it was at the Phoenix Museum of Art. I was spellbound seeing original works of art from such a revered artist. As I slowly walked through the museum, I found myself feeling the sadness that Monet must have felt as he lived through his wife’s dying, his health failing and his eyesight all but disappearing in a world that was so centered on vision. His paintings went from being succinct, crisp and lightfilled to blurry, more abstract and very dark. At the end of the exhibit hall, I was literally in tears for what Monet had lost by losing his sight. What the world had lost by his passing. It was a very moving experience.

I also found out that there is an artist from Carmel, Elizabeth Murray, who has been going to Giverny for over 25 years. She started out by helping the gardening staff with some renovation and now, I believe, she returns every year to work in Monet’s Garden and has taken some wonderful pictures of the world-famous home and gardens.

ago as we were looking for a cover picture for our Manteca Garden Club brochure and she graciously gave us permission to use one of her beautiful pictures of two little girls having tea.

Another wonderful example of melding gardening and art.

My last example of gardening and art is the glass works of Dale Chihuly of the Tacoma/Seattle area. Dale is no longer able to complete works of art because of a major automobile accident that left him blind in one eye, but prior to that, he created a style of glass blowing that is now a signature look in the world of art glass.

He is responsible for installations of Chihuly glass in several botanical gardens throughout the world. We were recently in the Phoenix Botanical Garden where Chihuly had an amazing installation of glass. The Chihuly glass works were installed alongside cactus and succulents. It was a beautiful exhibit and the glass really enhanced the gardens. The Chihuly exhibit ran from November 2013 through mid-May 2014. We were so thrilled to be able to see it while it was being installed and then again after it was open to the public in March 2014.

Each of the artists I’ve mentioned has clearly been inspired by gardens and flowers. Perhaps you have been inspired by a work of art to create something “picture perfect” in your yard! I guess you could say it’s “art imitating life.”

how do you spell success?

T

his time around, success is spelled ‘WOODBRIDGE 100’!

There is nothing as sweet as success and accomplishing the goal you set out to do. The Woodbridge 100 event was so successful that we’re going to get the Club Room door automated with $300$500 left over!

For the first time, this event was a partnership of several clubs that really need to be recognized for their hard work. The softball group through the Orange Crush team and the concession stand people handled all of the food sales which included shopping for all the supplies and transporting close to a thousand pounds of stuff out onto the field. The Men of Woodbridge and their spouses stepped up and handled the raffle, cataloging each item, making sure the donor was recognized, and transporting everything out to the field. The Veterans group stepped in and helped in many areas, especially filling gaps in the time keeping and judging of the races.

Neighborhood Watch was there to watch over our cars and keep the peace.

Mary and Rudy Salvador did a great job keeping the lively music playing

throughout the day. Last but not least, the Wheels of Woodbridge did all the course layout, set up/take down and a good portion of the time keeping and judging. Thanks go out to all of these folks.

We must also recognize our six sponsors who stepped up with a combined donation of $1,300. The Lori’s from PMZ Real Estate were Platinum sponsors.

They gave out root beer floats and they sponsored the Best Turned Out First Place trophy. Steve’s Mobile Sunscreens was also a sponsor and although Steve couldn’t be here because he was setting up for the ‘Not Forgotten’ event at Woodward Park, he did come through with a Platinum level sponsorship. Doctor’s Hospital of Manteca was a Gold sponsor and sponsored the Survivor Race First Place trophy. Arvin himself from Arvin Home Systems gave us a Silver sponsorship; Susan Russitano with PMZ came forward with a Silver sponsorship, and Tom Thorson from Thorson Financial was also a Silver Sponsor.

The Men of Woodbridge donated $300 to the project in addition to working the raffle.

We thank you MOW! The next time you see one of these sponsors, give them a grateful acknowledgement for helping out with this worthwhile project.

A special thanks is also in order for Officers Jason Massey and Max. The Woodbridge community seems to have adopted this special K-9 Unit from the Manteca Police Department as our own. Their short performance was a demonstration of how well Max has Jason trained. Whenever Max wants to chase a ball, he has Jason trained to throw it; if Max wants to go after the bad guy, he has Jason trained to know just the perfect moment to issue the command. What a pair!

Please note, both officers were out of uniform during this event. Jason wore surfing shirt and shorts and Max wore a wrap-around pair of shades.

VETERANS OF WOODBRIDGE: Flag Retirement Ceremony

n Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 17, the Veterans of Woodbridge held an American Flag Retirement ceremony on our softball field. The East Union High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) under the direction of Karl Knutsen, instructor and Hannika Jones, student commander, conducted the ceremony. Hannika began our time with an emotionally moving reading of “Old Glory.”

The 50 flags presented by Woodbridge residents were retired by burning. The process included removing the blue field of stars from the red and white stripes. The stripes were folded and placed on the fire followed by the field of stars. Those attending the ceremony were given an opportunity to carry a flag to the fire in honor of or memory of a service man or woman.

We would like to acknowledge the fine students who participated in the moving flag retirement ceremony. Included were: Sandra

Membrere, Hillary Barbosa, Orlando Reyes, Dominic Keifer, Austin Tures-Gray and Hannika Jones.

As a reminder, any resident may turn in worn flags for retirement at the Clubhouse front desk. The Veterans of Woodbridge and East Union JROTC schedule additional retirement ceremonies when at least 50 flags have been collected. Flags and longer poles are also available for purchase at the front desk. Flags cost $20; six-foot poles cost $10. For questions call Roger Goodnow, 815-9344.

veryone who is associated with softball knows about the Snack Shack, but we want to make sure everyone in Del Webb Woodbridge is also informed. Great food is available at our Wednesday and Saturday games thanks to the volunteers staffing our Del Webb Field Snack Shack. Kathy Dezotte runs the shack and among her many duties is to schedule the volunteers to ensure she has adequate help. Karla Hoyer is responsible for procuring supplies.

Other volunteers include Charlene Haywood, Jackie Andrews, Sandi Bosse, Sharon Fields and Rosemary Hekl. Other volunteers are on the list to help whenever Kathy runs short of helpers.

The Snack Shack menu includes: • $5 – Freshly grilled hamburger, cheeseburger or Polish dog, plus chips and a drink.

• $5 – Pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw (whenever Sandy Bosse makes it, and it sure is delicious).

TIMING OF GAMES AND SOFTBALL SEASON

The Silver Slugger men play two games on Wednesdays at 8:30 and 10 a.m. There are three games on Saturdays at 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m.; the Silver Slugger men play two games and the Diamond Gals play one game. The Wolverines, our travel team, normally plays Modesto seniors on the first and third Mondays of the month and the Lodi Seniors on Fridays. All of the games are shown on the community calendar.

The first half of the Woodbridge Senior Softball season runs through the end of June. We have the month of July off and the second half of the season starts at the beginning of August and runs through October.

If you missed the main sign-up period, you may still sign up any time during the softball season. You can obtain the sign-up sheets at the front desk of the Clubhouse.

Successful Softball for Silver Sluggers 70 and older

oodbridge resident men, usually 55 and over, are eligible to play in our Silver Slugger men’s softball league. We currently have five teams with a total of 85 players. Twenty-five of our players are 70 years of age or older. On Thursday, May 8, our Silver Slugger men, 70 and over, played their inaugural softball game at Del Webb Field. It was a game packed with plenty of offensive action and several very good defensive plays. The final score of the seven-inning game was 22-19. Team names adopted for the game were Viagra and Cialis.

Players voted to hold a game for our 70s and over on the first Thursday of each month. Our starting time will be 9 a.m. Teams will be selected ahead of each game by the coaches. A few of our regular Silver Slugger rules will be modified for this group: • Run-through lines will be reinstated for each base.

• Foul balls on a batter with two strikes will not result in a strike three out call.

• Each team will consist of nine players.

• Outfielders will not have to utilize the 170 foot line; they can play anywhere in the outfield.

erry Gibson has been a faithful volunteer in the Silver Sluggers softball program as a player, manager and, most importantly, as our lead field maintenance representative. Perry was born in San Francisco in 1949. He lived in The City for five years after which his family moved to Pacifica where they lived for 33 years. As a youngster, he found he enjoyed baseball while playing in his local Little League. He graduated from Pacifica High School and then entered the Army at the age of 19 where he served his country for one-and-a-half years as a medic in Vietnam. After his service ended, he joined Pac Bell and AT&T where he was employed for 27 years.

Perry continued to develop his love for baseball by playing adult baseball and softball for over 20 years. One of the highlights of his baseball life was

experienced through an opportunity to attend a San Francisco Giants Fantasy Baseball Camp in 1991. In the week-long camp in Arizona, he was able to train, work out and play in baseball games against other campers while being coached by ex-pro players Orlando Cepeda and Jim Barr. Basically Perry ate, slept and played baseball for a week with professional ballplayers.

He also received a complete baseball uniform with his name on the back. Afterward, the campers started their own baseball league in the Bay Area and still play on Sundays.

They have held three-day tournaments in Arizona, Palm Springs, San Diego, Lodi and other venues. Perry also had some years of play and managing in the American Baseball Association (ABA) and Men’s Senior Baseball League MSBL).

Perry serves on the Woodbridge Senior Softball Council as our VP of Field Maintenance. He enjoys working with his hands on outdoor projects and has put this skill to good use for Woodbridge. For the past four years, he has been one of our lead representatives in working with our Executive Director and the landscaping maintenance crew to assure that we have an acceptable field on which to play our softball games. This includes dragging the infield, keeping outfield grass at a safe

level and assuring that adequate watering is done.

Perry has had significant help this season from Bob Perrin, who also coaches the Wolverines and Blues Brothers.

Perry moved to Del Webb in 2010 from Castro Valley and married Caroline at home plate on Del Webb Field in 2013. Robert Ybarra, a resident of Woodbridge, officiated at the service. Caroline has taken over announcing duties in our score booth this season and is doing an excellent job. We appreciate the dedication and service that both Perry and Caroline provide in addition to their friendship. Perry has asked that we invite others to volunteer to help him with the field preparation on a regular or part time basis.

This Fourth of July, make some room in your calendar to pay a visit to our neighbors. They live just 200 yards north of Shady Pines Street and they have been there for a long time. As a matter of fact, some of our neighbors’ families have been living in this area for 8,000 – yes, eight thousand – years.

W

e are talking about our Native American neighbors and about a place called Three Rivers Indian Lodge, which was established on the outskirts of Manteca 43 years ago. First and foremost, it is a recovery center, helping Native Americans battling with alcoholism and drug addiction.

This part of the facility is run by a non-profit group called Native Directions. For more than two generations, the small, dedicated staff has saved hundreds of lives from the grips of these two cunning and powerful diseases.

But over the years, Three Rivers also has become a meeting place for all Native Americans in the area, serving as a cornerstone in the preservation of the culture and identity of America’s first nations. A small fire pit and a sweat lodge tent at the rim of the facility have become the center of the spiritual universe for many of our Native American neighbors. Over the years, this small corner of Three Rivers Lodge has become a sacred place for hundreds of people who follow a religion as old as the land.

Once a year, always the Fourth of July weekend, the Three Rivers community reaches out and invites all of Central California to a threeday celebration of Native American art and culture.

The Three Rivers Pow Wow has a 38-year-long tradition and has become one of the most important events in the lives of Native American families between Sacramento and Fresno and between the coast and Yosemite.

This year, the Pow Wow will take place from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6. It is an experience not to be missed.

The Pow Wow attracts thousands of people, so parking will be limited. Be early or carpool. Better yet, join the author (Volker Moerbitz) on Saturday, July 5 at 10 a.m. at the Clubhouse for a 15-minute walk. This will also give you a chance to ask any questions you like as the author has been enjoying the hospitality of Three Rivers for more than eight years.

So this year, when you hear the drums and smell the sage wafting from the north, take a short trip and meet the neighbors and their magnificent culture.

ur Men of Woodbridge group just completed the yearly Mother's Day breakfast, and, again, it was a great success. All mothers deserve a day of recognition and we hope those in attendance appreciated our efforts.

Our group has been asked to assist with repainting the pump houses at Panda Park and Stockbridge Park and the gates to the city pump house on Airport Way. Even though these are the city of Manteca's responsibilities, our group is going to repaint the structures with our leftover paint from the Clubhouse.

Men of Woodbridge was in charge of the raffle prizes at the recent Woodbridge 100 golf cart races and car show sponsored by the Wheels of Woodbridge. Profits are earmarked for automating the Club Room doorway in the Clubhouse.

Our next cooking event will be Saturday, July 12 at the Wheels of Woodbridge annual car show. This event attracts hundreds of hungry and thirsty people and our group prepares the hot dogs, sodas and chips for all to enjoy. It is a great event with the proceeds going to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

We have a great time at our meetings and events. All male Woodbridge residents are encouraged to join our group the second Monday of each month at 10 a.m. in the Club Room at the Clubhouse.

In addition, she is a cheese educator and consultant who has owned two San Francisco cheese shops, served as a judge at American Cheese Society and California State Fair competitions, is Cheese Program Director at Lavender Ridge Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills, is membership chair of the California Artisan Cheese Guild, is guest lecturer at School of Restaurant Hospitality, City College of San Francisco, and

Doors That Won’t Stay Open Where You Want Doors that don’t have a spring loaded hinge and are not balanced absolutely perfectly will swing to a position where the weight of the door is at the lowest point. If that is not where you typically want the door to remain when in the open position, you can fix that. Using an eightpenny nail or something with a metal shaft one-eighth inch or less in width, pick one of the hinges on the door and insert the nail into the hole in the bottom of the hinge. Tap up on the nail with a hammer but be very careful to not accidently hit the door facing. Once the pin in the hinge has risen a couple of inches, you can either pull it out barehanded or, using pliers placed on the shaft of the pin, not the chrome knob top, twist back and forth applying upward pressure.

Once you have the pin out, place it on the concrete with a piece of cloth or something protecting the chrome knob, and tap the pin in the middle a couple of times with a hammer. The intent is to put a slight bend in the pin that

you can’t even see with normal eyesight. It doesn’t take very much to do this. Put the pin back in the hinge and tap it back down in place. Use a piece of cloth to protect the chrome knob from the hammer. If the door still doesn’t stay where you want it, repeat the process. Sixth Annual Garden Tour

ur Sixth Annual Woodbridge Garden Tour is right around the corner. Tickets are available at the Clubhouse for $15 per person. The price includes a wonderful box lunch, a tour of 10 beautiful backyards and a chance to meet some new people!

This is a great opportunity to invite someone who is considering living in Woodbridge to see what our homeowners have done in landscaping their yards. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 7. Day Trip: Viva Fairs And Festivals!

asten your seat belts, kids! It’s that time of year. Time for that day trip which can take you out to experience the arts in oh, so many forms here and in the surrounding cities and counties that make up our beautiful Valley. There are county fairs, craft fairs, art exhibits, wine festivals, music festivals and other venues for celebrating unique forms of art for different and specific tastes. Because the list is so vast this year, I will touch on but a few. But with a little surfing of the Web and close attention to your weekend newspapers, I’m sure you’ll be able to add several to your list.

Let’s start close to home. Don’t forget that in May, we had our own wonderful crafts fair with clever offerings by Woodbridge’s talented resident craftspeople. Held on May 17, the event is described elsewhere in this issue. Also, the Wheels of Woodbridge annual car show will be held at and around the sales pavilion on Saturday, July 12, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Car shows are indeed where you can take in another form of ‘art.’ Touring the vehicles entered here and at others like the 7th Annual Rod & Custom Car Show in Modesto on June 29 (for more info: www. modestoview.com) will surely convince you that this is ‘art on wheels.’

How about ‘yard art?’ Yes, here at Woodbridge, there is an annual Spring

Garden Tour. This year the date is Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and tickets are $15 at the Clubhouse. You can spend the day cruising from house to house admiring our neighbors’ creative landscaping before or after enjoying a little lunch.

If music is more your style, Stockton offers Concerts in the Park every Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. during the month of July.

They will be hosting their Annual Photo Show from June 7 – 28. Depending on your taste and lifestyle, this can be a win-win. You get to enjoy the beautiful photos taken by local talents while wine tasting or perhaps checking out the adorable gift shop. Take it from one without this ability; anyone with the gift and the eye to capture beautiful things and people in a photograph creates a work of art.

This one is a sure favorite and unusual to boot. On Saturday and Sunday, August 30-31, the town of Ripon will host the 9th Annual Color in the Skies Hot Air Balloon

and Kite Show each day from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mistlin Sports Park. Admission is free and parking is $5. This is a wondrous event and kids (and grandkids) can participate in the afternoon kite shows with the small purchase of an individual kite. The hot air balloons are so colorful and cleverly decorated, they become ‘art in the air.’ It’s such a great family event that it’s worth planning for in advance. Lastly, if you want a down-home idea, please don’t forget about our local county fairs (check current calendars on the county’s official website). The big daddy of the summer fairs would be the 161st California State Fair in Sacramento, July 11-27. (Info: www.bigfun.org/fair-info). You can take in an abundance of art exhibits, bakers, growers and 4-H entrants all vying for the prized blue ribbon. Oh, and don’t get me started on the food vendors. You know, the great cob of corn on a stick, the deep-fried everything and the rides that make you feel like a kid again … or sick. But seriously, I hope these ideas have been enough to whet your appetite and make you want to get out there and see all of the entertaining and artful pleasures that await you.

ave you ever visited Douglas Van Howd’s incredible studio and art gallery in Auburn, CA? You will be overwhelmed by the volume and quality of this world-renowned painter and sculptor’s work. He focuses on wildlife of North America and Africa and early western art, skillfully rendered in a detailed and lifelike manner. It is rare to see an artist proficient in two such demanding and difficult media.

Van Howd has completed many worldwide commissions. His monumental bronze statues are sought after by museums, resorts, city sites and corporate grounds.

You may like to know that Douglas Van Howd is 79 years old and is a vibrant and active artist.

In his studio, attached to the art gallery, you will view two works in progress. One is a larger than life size bronze of former President Reagan for the Reagan Library and the other is a bronze of local hero, Col. Bud Anderson and his famous P-51 Mustang, Old Crow. Bud was a leading ace of the 363rd Fighter Squadron and his statue will be on display at the Auburn Airport when completed.

Any great day trip includes lunch. One choice would be the (nearby) outdoor café at the Auburn Airport located a short distance away at 13626 New Airport Road, also in Auburn. The airport is very active with many small planes landing and taking off.

Bud Anderson still flies there and you may just catch a glimpse of him if you are lucky.

Next for your journey, go to the stunning and restful High Hand nursery at 3750 Taylor Road in Loomis. Their hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Saturday. Sunday hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Phone number is 916-652-2065. This is a great place to get ideas and to make purchases. You will enjoy the variety and unusual selection of plantings artfully arranged along meandering paths. Sit by the koi pond.

Walk through the gift barn. The selection of garden artifacts is tasteful, imaginative and oh, so appropriate for your backyard.

It is even a place to purchase oriental rugs!

If you have not eaten lunch, do so in the enclosed elegant café greenhouse. It is beautiful and the menu is appealing.

Nearby, also in Loomis, is a small snack shack named Taylor’s located at 3636 Taylor Road. I have heard they specialize in over 120 flavors of shakes and malts.

Cooking stations were manned by culinary students of the Manteca Unified Vocational Academies and featured freshly made Asian chicken salad, pizza, quesadillas, guacamole, meatballs, grilled sausages, crepes and more. Proceeds from the event, which also included a raffle and silent auction, amounted to approximately $6,500 which will fund several scholarships for local high school students.

What’s Light Got To Do With It? A simple guide for choosing COLOR

W

hen the French impressionist painter, Claude Monet, was working on his famous “Woman in the Garden,” it was told that after setting up and positioning everything just right, he waited with paintbrush in hand for a long time. Puzzled about this long hesitation, his friend asked him, “What are you waiting for?” Monet answered, ”I’m waiting for the sun.” (As told in “Alexandra Stoddard’s Book of Color”) Monet knew what many people do not understand about color: That Color and Light are intimately related. Color is dependent on light to get the most effective outcome.

Of all the elements in design, my favorite is COLOR! Color has the ability to evoke human emotion and set a mood, unify design and express a personality. But choosing colors can also be one of the most confusing and overwhelming decisions to make when putting your home together. After all, according to color experts, there is an infinite number of colors from which to choose in the world (millions for sure).

Should you go with Radiant Orchid, Pantone’s “2014 Color of the Year,” for your entry?

Should you paint what you intuitively love and, for sure, makes you smile? Or should you go with what is safe? Questions like this taunt the DIY decorator on a regular basis.

You are not alone!

Believe it or not, color is the design element that sometimes stumps many designers.

However, the answer is not necessarily to avoid pretty hues and revert to what is a safer choice like beige, white or taupe. Remember, it is only paint. It is a relatively easy and inexpensive fix.

If you have recently moved or purchased new furniture, you may have noticed that your existing colors and fabrics may look much different in your new place. There may need to be some adjustments to your décor. Things may look sadder or duller and you might be tempted to get rid of the old and purchase all new furniture. Or perhaps you are tempted to sink into buyer’s remorse because the items you purchased look different than what you expected in your house.

On the other hand, these items might appear brighter and cheerier and maybe you have discovered that you love your fabrics and colors even more than before.

May I suggest the main difference for this confusing discrepancy is the lighting. Not just artificial vs. natural lighting. The size and number of windows or whether the rooms face north, south, east or west are also contributing factors.

If you are thinking of painting a new color in your house, purchasing new furniture or doing any new decorating project, here are some key

things to keep in mind or to ask yourself: 1. What will be my overall color scheme?

Not every room has to have the same exact dominant color, but each room should have a natural flow from the adjacent rooms or hallways with colors that blend harmoniously throughout the house.

2. What is the orientation of my room or house? a. Northern exposure light is the most consistent light all day. b. Southern exposure offers the most light throughout the day. c. Eastern exposure gets the morning and early afternoon sun. d. Western exposure gets the sun most of the day.

-Rooms that have the cooler exposure cheer up with lighter, warmer colors like yellows, oranges and reds.

-Rooms that have a warmer exposure cool down with blues, purples and greens.

3. Consider flooring and window coverings.

Is everything light? Dark? Both?

Remember the darker the elements in a room, the more light it absorbs from the room.

4. Comfort level of color intensity. If you choose a more intense color for your walls, keep the other elements, furniture, carpet, etc., neutral. They will be less apt to compete with one another. Use the intense wall color to showcase the other elements in the room, like line and texture.

5. If you have a lot of color in your furniture, artwork and decorative rugs, keep your walls neutral. If you choose white for your walls, remember that white is composed of the whole color spectrum. It is a receiver of color. So off- white will not do as well if you are using lots of color in the other elements. Choose a pure white.

6. What type of lighting is in my house: natural vs. artificial. Metamerism is “The phenomenon that occurs when colors change when viewed in different light.”

Be careful with light bulbs. Most energy saving bulbs give off more harsh light. Go with incandescent as much as possible for ambience. Check with your local specialty lighting store for the most natural light bulbs.

7. What are the color preferences of the other person(s) living with me? Here is a simple test I like to give that I learned from color gurus, Dewy Sadka and Marge Kyle, (“We make Color Easy”) to help you and your partner in come to a color compromise: -Each person should prioritize his/her preferences of primary, secondary and tertiary colors -Land on a color family you both like -Decide on a shade or intensity you both

can live with.

And … Voila! A peaceful existence under one colorful roof.

8. What’s the mood I want to project in a room? Energetic? Peaceful? Whimsical?

Formal? Casual?

-Complementary color schemes (opposites on the color wheel) provide a more energetic or whimsical mood.

-Monochromatic (various shades of the same color) or analogous (colors adjacent on the color wheel) schemes provide a more relaxed or peaceful mood.

9. Do I want an accent wall? If you decide to do an accent wall for emphasis, make it a different shade, not a different color family, of the same color on the other walls.

10. Rule of thumb: The more intense a color, the smaller the dose. If you love a color that is extremely intense like bright lime green or turquoise, fuchsia or bright yellow, use it in accessories, not a sofa, carpet or wall color. The darker the room, the more intense the color needs to be in an accessory in order to appreciate it.

Otherwise, it will disappear.

11. Do not be afraid of darker shades on your walls. If you like the color, go for it. If your room feels dark, just remember, you will have to increase your lighting.

12. Live with paint samples on your walls for days, even weeks, at a time in order to see the various changes in the color before you make a final color decision.

Remember, no matter how much you love a color in a store, another room or another house, it will most likely look different in your new space. It will even look different from wall to wall and at different times of the day because lighting inside and outdoors is never exactly the same everywhere.

Take a lesson from Claude Monet, the painter of light, and be aware of the lighting all around you because color and light are intimately related.

Design is an artistic process. It is not a task to get done in a few easy steps. Enjoy yourself.

Take your time. Be patient and thoughtful in choosing a color.

 WINE 101

he May Wine 101 class had to be cancelled due to a medical emergency. Thankfully, everything is fine now and plans are proceeding for more learning events.

For June, Wine 101 is sponsoring its first chartered bus field trip, Monday, June 23. We will be attending an "ambassador tour and tasting" at Concannon Vineyards in the Livermore Valley.

All seats on the bus for this trip were filled in the first two weeks of posting. Fifty-four participants will take part in a one-hour tour and a private tasting of many of Concannon's fine wines. In addition, all participants will receive a 15 percent discount on any wines purchased that day. Concannon is a large corporation that makes over 500,000 cases of wine each year but only about 80,000 cases of small lot reserve wines which are the wines we will taste on our field trip. Due to the field trip, there will be no Wine 101 class in June.

In July, Wine 101 will conduct a class on how to get in touch with your own palate and discover why you like to drink the wines you buy. We expect to have a full class of 101 participants with a waiting list, so be sure to sign up early for future sessions. This group is very popular!

After a brief presentation about the studies conducted about palate and likes or dislikes of certain styles and varieties of wine, the class will take a simple test to focus on their own palates. After the test, class members will discuss prices of wines, gold medals and points given to wines by wine experts. The information for this class will be posted on the Woodbridge portal if you are unable to attend but would like to learn more about wines.

For August, plans are in the works for a field trip to Bent Creek Vineyards in Livermore Valley. We will visit with one of the owners to hear about the journey from no winery to where they are now, celebrating their 10th anniversary. We will also be treated to some exceptional wines and be able to purchase these wines at a discount. Bent Creek is a 3,500-case winery and Del Webb Woodbridge's own Mike Machado is the assistant wine maker there. Due to the field trip, there will be no Wine 101 class in August.

Keep an eye on your tomatoes to make sure tomato worm or other insect doesn’t attack them.

Continue to support tomatoes as they grow. If you notice tomatoes that are eaten, it could be roof rats.

Make sure your plants are receiving adequate irrigation – the hot days of summer can kill a plant quickly if it has not been watered for several days.

Look in nurseries for summer blooming annuals such as impatiens, dahlias, million bells, fuchsias or petunias.

Continue to pot containers with plants like potato vine, fuchsias and small ferns for shade areas.

Marigolds, ornamental grasses and petunias are good ideas for a sunny pot.

Keep an eye out for aphids on roses and crepe myrtles.

Use either two- or 12-month systemic insect control products.

Thin fruit on fruit trees if you feel the fruit will become

crowded. Thinning will leave more space for your fruit to mature, lessens chances of disease spread such as brown rot, reduces the amount of support you’ll have to provide and is much better for your fruit tree overall.

• Continue to feed your citrus trees which need monthly feeding in Northern California.

• Provide water in your birdbath for our fine feathered friends. Before pruning a tree or bush, make sure there is no bird’s nest in it.

• Make sure if you install any new plants you provide adequate water, particularly in the heat.

• Provide two inches of mulch around your plants to retain moisture but be sure to leave space for your drip irrigation to reach the plants’ root systems.
