WOODBURY NEWS
- APRIL 2014
EDITORIAL
Following our report in last month's Woodbury News, development applications continue to accelerate. Green energy features strongly with a proposed solar panel farm on the Lympstone border and an anaerobic digestor at Woodbury Salterton. Interestingly, the digestor has to be sited to prevent possible interference with the major gas pipeline which runs through the Parish. The Parish Council have now appointed a top flight Editor for the Neighbourhood Plan. When approved, hopefully later this year, the plan should curtail some of the out of plan approvals that we have seen of late. Potholes continue to be a major issue and Christine Channon reported that the recent spell of bad weather has resulted in 11500 new potholes throughout the county. The DCC pothole repair teams have been tripled in number to cope with the situation throughout the county. There is a hierarchy of repair timing, with A and B roads taking first priority. Most of the affected roads in Woodbury Parish are C roads, including the Woodbury to Greendale road, and these are then prioritised by urgency. How is urgency being judged? Cllr Channon suggests that reporting a pothole on the DCC website is absolutely the best way to get a speedy repair. http:// www.devon.gov.uk/pothole COVER PHOTO: At this month's Parish Council meeting, the subject of illegal bill posting was discussed in detail, following a number of complaints to EDDC from the public. It seems that to display an unauthorised advertisement is a criminal offence and the Local Planning Authority can issue proceedings against the advertiser in the magistrates’ court. However, the Parish Council recommendation was to ask advertisers using telegraph poles to advertise events in the Parish to at least remove those posters after the event is over. The council did not discuss longer term adverts for paid services or commercial activities, which of course are equally illegal. See inside for a statement from the PC. 6 FoSS (FRIENDS OF ST SWITHUN’S) Spring has arrived, the days are lengthening, and it is time to get out and about. Another FoSS concert is organised to start the summer, on 25 April in Church featuring The Woodbury Community Choir, Bel Canto singers and Exeter School. Exeter School are providing a varied programme, Saxophone quartet, Vocal ensemble, Belles Canto, Chamber Choir and a very impressive string quintet playing Schubert. Tickets are on sale at Rowsells or from committee members at £7.50 to include a glass of wine or juice and nibbles. In the past this event has been well supported and again we are looking forward to a full church to support our local and visiting performers. In the summer FoSS will be helping with the lych gate stalls and will organise an afternoon tea on Saturday 19 July, when we will welcome David Stevens to read or tell us a story. As in the past FoSS is ready to provide funds for the maintenance of the fabric of the Church, the latest project is to upgrade the electrical circuitry in the Church, work being carried out by local electrician David Mansell.

WOODBURY CRICKET CLUB The Cricket Club is very much looking forward to the season ahead. The league campaign gets underway on 3 May away to Cheriton Fitzpaine, who according to their website are the Guinness World Record holders for the Longest Continuous Cricket Match (27 hours and 34 minutes; http://www.cfcc.co.uk/pages/longest.html). Devon Cricket League matches aren’t quite this long, but Woodbury could be in for an exhausting season opener. There are a couple of friendly matches in April beforehand, including an away match against Clyst St George on the 20th and a home match against Exmouth on the 26th. These matches start at 2pm and it would be great to see some supporters warming the benches around the ground at Town Lane for our first home fixture of the season. The author of this article visited the ground last week, and with the sun setting over the Exe estuary it looked extremely inviting indeed. The ground has dried out considerably since the heavy winter rain and is looking very suitable for cricket. Once again we must thank Doug Barlow and Neil Richards for all their hard work keeping the ground in fantastic condition. Neil has taken over the role of full-time groundsman from Doug this year and we wish them both all the very best. There have been some other changes at the club. We extend profuse thanks to the outgoing captain Kevin Miller, and based on his record and enthusiasm we are convinced that he will do a fantastic job in his new role as manager of the Colts. The incoming captain Ian Hughes has big shoes to fill, but we have no doubt that he will rise to the challenge and continue to keep Woodbury Cricket moving forward. We also thank Martin Cook for all his work with the Colts. Last season saw a couple of Colts make the step up to the Senior side, and we hope that we can continue this flow of talent from the junior to the senior ranks this season. We encourage anyone who would like to play some cricket this year to get in touch (see http://www.woodbury cc.co.uk/ or call Ian Hughes on 01392 261833). The Club has been practising hard over the winter and vigorous indoor net sessions for both the Senior and Colt sides have taken place at Exmouth Community College Sports Hall. Hopefully this will stand us in good stead for the coming season. Look out for updates in Woodbury News as the season progresses! CONNECTIONS Connections Walk on Monday 7 April. Please meet at the Arch at 6.00pm or the Public Hall, Budleigh Salterton at 6.15pm. The walk will be followed by a meal at The Feathers. As there are so many going, they have asked us to pre-order our meals and I shall have a menu available before we start. Any queries phone Shelagh on 232124.
8 WOODBURY GARDEN CLUB March Meeting. Fruit and Vegetables for Small Gardens. Mr D Rawding, a retired horticulturist, began by giving us an in-depth talk on growing vegetables and how, by growing different varieties, vegetables could be harvested throughout the year. A garden can be full all the year round. Mr Rawding has had 40 years experience in horticulture and explained how difficult it was for him to condense that experience into half an hour. In fact he couldn't, but no one minded! His advice was to consider seven aspects when choosing what to grow: your individual taste, what was not easily available, vegetables that were expensive to buy, those that were easy to grow and best eaten fresh and finally, vegetables that had a long harvest period and those that could be stored. Perhaps not an easy exercise for beginners, but his advice was to keep records of what you do e.g. sowing dates, weather conditions and performances. Then, having decided on what you were going to be grow, you could then work out how much to grow for the day-to-day family needs, for the freezer and for natural storage. We were then given a great deal of information on how continuity could be achieved by growing different varieties. I am sure that a list of the varieties he named would have been useful for beginners. For a non-vegetable grower it seemed a complicated exercise. But, as he explained, each year is a learning curve and, with experience and keeping records, success can be achieved. During the presentation, Mr Rawding explained how essential it was to test your soil every year after winter rain, to rotate your crops, the importance of watering at the correct time and keeping perennial vegetables separate from rotation crops. We were also given advice on different fertilisers, how to deal with pests and companion growing, altogether a comprehensive insight into growing vegetables. He ended his presentation with some slides of varieties of apples and other fruit that could be grown and stored. Our next meeting is on 8 April when Mrs Rebecca Wells will talk about Gravel Gardens. 7.30 WVH. JUMBLE SALE SATURDAY 26 APRIL WOODBURY VILLAGE HALL 1.30 – 3.30pm Please support us and bring your jumble to the WVH on the day between 10.00–12.00. LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY There have been a few changes in the History Society in 2014. At the AGM in February Roger Stokes and Gill Selley, although staying on the committee, have stepped down as Chairman and Secretary respectively, after many years of sterling work. Nick Burgess is now the new Chairman, Bryony Giles is Vice Chairman and Suzy Austin has taken over as Secretary. We have a varied programme this year and some of the talks will be held in different venues. In May we are going to Woodbury Salterton Village Hall and in November we will be in St Swithun's. In March we had a very interesting talk on the restoration and preservation of old books and documents, given by Deborah Phillips of the Devon Records Office. We certainly learnt a lot from the talk, not least the difference between preservation and restoration. Our annual outing this year is to be to the Britannia Naval College in July. At the moment this outing is only available to members but, if not all the spaces are filled, it will be opened up to the public at a later date. WOODBURY TENNIS CLUB All is now ready for the summer season 2014. The first evening club session will take place on Friday 11 April from 6.30pm. The club has two pairs of Wimbledon tickets for 24 June to be sold to lucky members. The ballot for those paid-up Woodbury (and British Tennis) members will be held on 2 May. There will be a pre Wimbledon Barbeque at the courts following Sunday Club session on 8 June and a club tournament on Saturday 5 July. It is hoped that there will be good support for these events. The teams start their competitive programme at the end of April. We are very pleased that senior coach, Steve Wood, will again run a full programme of junior coaching during the summer term, starting at the end of April. However there will be a change of day: junior coaching will now take place on Wednesdays from 4.30pm. Glenis Pewsey has again volunteered to organise the groups. Please contact Glenis on 232988 if you want to be included. New or returning members are always welcome; please contact Pat Browne (232805) or Jackie Clarke (232832); occasional use of the courts can be arranged, key from Pat or Jackie, £4 per court per hour + £5 key deposit. However, for regular players it is cheaper to become a member. WOODBURY NEWS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING MONDAY 12 MAY AT 7.30 ROYAL BRITISH LEGION ROOM, WOODBURY VILLAGE HALL All welcome.

Following on from the record levels of rainfall in December and January we now have a three month run which surpasses anything we have seen before by a country mile. Prize Winning Cake Designer Organisers of the Big Cake Show staged at Westpoint, Exeter in March provided children with an opportunity to enter a cake design competition. Following the very popular ‘Great Woodbury Bake-Off’ fundraising event organised by the school last autumn in support of Children in Need, a number of young would-be bakers once again put their creative skills to the test to design a cake that would impress the Big Cake Show judges. From the entries received, Rebecca Osborn’s attractive design secured her second place in the competition.

In addition to £20 worth of baking items, Rebecca was also presented with a free entry ticket to the Big Cake Show Event. Devon Athletics Final A team of enthusiastic Year 5 and Year 6 athletes from Woodbury School recently took part in a Devon Schools Athletics Final in Plymouth. Having successfully battled their way through the Exmouth Area and East Devon Schools heats, the Woodbury finalists competed against athletes representing schools from across Devon. One of sixteen teams taking part, they were placed fourth, narrowly missing the bronze medal by just 8 points. Outstanding individual performances from members of the Woodbury team clearly herald a promising future in competitive sports for a number of them.
14 WOODBURY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE February Meeting Woodbury WI celebrated their 94th birthday at the February meeting. The meeting started with the singing of Jerusalem, with piano accompaniment. The President, Margaret Edwards, completed the business part of the meeting quickly in anticipation of the party, local and national WI matters were discussed, good wishes given to five members celebrating birthdays before the next meeting, Vicky was celebrating her birthday that day and Pam Spray would be celebrating a Big 0 birthday, so Happy Birthday was sung with gusto! Nearly 50 ladies had brought delicious dishes to the party and we all enjoyed good food and friendship during the evening. The entertainment for the party was provided by Anthony Powell, who brought a Musical Quiz to challenge and entertain the guests. Each team of four had a list of musical related questions, ranging from The Beatles to Mozart, opera to pop, with Anthony playing snatches of the music on a keyboard to help us answer the questions. It was a lot of fun and tunes and songs were hummed and sung as members attempted to answer the questions. The winning team was given polyanthus plants as prizes. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks to Anthony and to the committee for organising the party. March Meeting We had a good number of entries in our Flower of the Month Competition which was won by Barbara Fewings. Our other competition was for a knitted hat and Margaret Homer, Pauline Wratten and Joyce Jeans’ hats will be entered in a Devon Federation WI competition. When the official part of the programme was over, we were reminded of the colder weather when Sue Bury, one of our members, gave us a talk on her trip to Antarctica. Flying first to Tierra del Fuego which, with views of the southern Andes was a pleasant surprise, she then boarded ship for a two day crossing of the notoriously rough Drake Passage. TOUGH CHOICES: CHANGES TO WASTE AND RECYCLING SERVICES Over the past four years Devon County Council has reduced spending from £600 million per year to £500 million. The latest Government spending review means the Council now needs to save a further £110 million by 2017. A review of all Council services is prompting changes to the way some services are delivered. For the Waste and Recycling service, several proposals were made to ensure its financial sustainability for the future. No recycling centres will close and, for the most part, there will be only a small reduction in opening hours. Where user numbers are low, changes will be necessary in order to retain a service while ensuring its long term viability. Stakeholders, including the public, were consulted via leafleting, the website and letter. Feedback was received online, by letter and in the form of petitions. The responses have been given due consideration and the revised proposals are as follows: Recycling centres in Devon will remain open seven days a week and operate with the reduced opening hours as proposed, so by an hour at each end of the day on summer weekdays and an hour in the morning on winter weekdays. Charities will now be charged for disposing of more than 10 tonnes of waste per year and, lastly, the rural skip service at Lyndown which only operates on four days a year will stop. Cabinet member with responsibility for waste, Councillor Roger Croad says: “While Holsworthy and South Molton sites will see reduced hours, following feedback from residents, they will be open an extra day at South Molton and an extra two days at Holsworthy more than originally proposed. “We do, of course, want to continue to support charities and, up until now, charities have been allowed to leave as much waste as they like. However, Devon residents are paying for this through their council tax and we feel that a threshold of 10 tonnes per charity per year is a fair compromise. “At Lynton, there remains the alternative option for residents to use the District Council bulky household waste collection service. “Waste, like all other services in the county, must take its share of the overall efficiency savings being made and we feel that these changes will allow us to make the savings we have been tasked with.” These revised proposals will come into force from 1 April 2014. New Opening Hours: Day Summer (April - September) Winter (October - March) Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm 9.00am - 4.30pm Saturday & Sunday 10.00am - 6.00pm 10.00am - 4.30pm
The ship had to be navigated very carefully through the ice and varying weather conditions and the aim was to get as far south as possible. Luck was with them and Sue is now one of the few people who can say that they have crossed the Antarctic Circle. On the way, she took some stunning photographs of the scenery and wildlife. The shapes and colours of the ice would have been impossible to describe in words and passengers were allowed ashore so close-ups were possible too. Their first opportunity to go ashore was at Neko Harbour and it was interesting to hear how strict the rules were for protecting the area. Passengers were 'hoovered' and 'hosed down' before they were allowed to leave the ship, posts designated the paths they were allowed to follow and a five metre 'no go area' was enforced around the wildlife. Fortunately, penguins don't obey the rules and were very inquisitive. The whales were also inquisitive and that could be a bit too exciting when you were in one of the zodiacs. Being close to elephant seals was best avoided as they were very noisy (at both ends). Visits were arranged to a Ukrainian Research Station, a disused Whaling Station and Base Brown. The UK sold Base Brown to Argentina for £1.00 and saved itself the problem of having to Photo above - 5 metre rule! dismantle and ship every bit of the base Photo below - SS Expedition out. There was the chance to take a polar and a zodiac plunge in the freezing waters of a flooded volcanic crater for a few of the crazier passengers. Sue has the certificate to prove that she stuck to her principles and resisted this temptation! We really enjoyed travelling with her and look forward to her next trip.
16 WOODBURY TWINNING ASSOCIATION On 7 March we held our Annual Quiz which was very well attended and great fun! We had some great questions, thought up by Aileen and Andy, including a picture quiz of detectives (and yes, there was Dixon of Dock Green!) and cryptic clues on sweets! Our next event is an April Walk on Sunday 6 April to include lunch. Anyone wishing to go, please phone Nita Goffron on 232314 so that she can book the lunch. In May we shall be visiting our friends in France and in June we are organising a trip to Rosemoor Gardens, when the roses should be at their peak. Please phone Jan Owen on 232694 if you are interested. WOODBURY VILLAGE HALL The Annual General Meeting for Woodbury Village Hall will be held on Wednesday 23 April 2014 at 7.30pm in the Royal British Legion Room in the Hall. Everybody is welcome. The Trustees of the Village Hall are delighted to announce that £79,000 (only £1,000 now required) has been raised to enable the improvements to the kitchen and toilets to be completed by the end of August, work commencing at the end of May. The work schedule has been organized by Gordon Cameron and Ken Perry; the hall will remain in use, with limited facilities during this period. Pat Browne (Treasurer) has been delighted with the support both moral and financial from many organisations and individuals who have organized events and contributed to the development fund. With such widespread support the major funding organisations were so impressed that they have provided £50,000 in grant aid. The Trustees are very grateful to:- Woodbury Local History Society - £250 grant, Awards for All (Lottery) - £10,000 for Kitchen refurbishment, Devon Community Council - £10,000 grant, Devon Waste Management via SWEET - £23,000 grant. These grants have been secured since last month’s report, and have ensured that the work will proceed as scheduled. WOODBURY SALTERTON WOMEN’S INSTITUTE President Jenny Kemp drew the attention of members to this month’s DFWI news, in which Woodbury Salterton WI is mentioned twice. Under the heading Milestone Birthdays, Woodbury Salterton is celebrating its 60th. Members and guests are looking forward to an evening at Froginswell to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee (report and photos next month). There is also a photograph of members with most of the 35 blankets which were sent to the charity Greenfields, Africa. These were made up of 36 squares each, knitted by WI members and many local friends who responded to our appeal for help. These blankets go into ‘Mama Bags’ in Kenya and Uganda which are given to support babies born into poverty. Jenny thanked all who had helped with the very successful afternoon quiz and tea held at the home of Gill Bricknell. Terrie Newman wrote the quiz and acted as Quizmaster and the winner was Brenda Randle. Funds raised will go towards the cost of our Diamond Jubilee evening.
ROUND AND ABOUT
Jenny Kemp showed – and reluctantly modelled, as the hat was for a child – the knitted hat which Lis Appleton has made as our WI entry in the competition at the forthcoming DFWI Spring Council Meeting in Torquay in April. This caused much amusement as well as admiration. Lis is a talented knitter and has made many hats for children featuring animals – and even one like a Christmas pudding! This is the first time she tried out this chicken pattern.
BIRTH Congratulations to Marion and David Pollard of Brent Close on the birth of their first great grand-child Ellis James, born on St Valentine’s day. First son to Charlotte and Thomas Lonsdale and first grandson for Jayne nee Pollard and Keith Johns of North Somerset. The family are delighted. What a wonderful Valentine gift! DEATHS I was sad to hear of the news about my lovely neighbour Cyril Bamsey. As many of you know Cyril helped to look after the cricket club in various ways for longer than I've been living in the village (15 years). He was always seen walking about the village talking to everyone and keeping us up to date on the news in the village. He was a very kind, lovely man and a bit of a scamp too when he knocked on my gate to set our dog barking, and giggled as he walked by. He will be missed and our love and prayers go to his lovely wife Vi. Julie Brown, 17 Parkway. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Exeter Chiefs who won the LV Cup at Sandy Park on 16 March. Many Woodbury Parish residents are part of the Exeter Chiefs setup, from members of the board to the management team, staff and players. Well done to them all! RNLI HOUSE-TO-HOUSE COLLECTION This will be taking place from 14-25 April this year and again, my lovely loyal band of collectors will be calling on you in the hope that you will donate something (however small) to support this great cause. Remember, not only does the RNLI save lives at sea, but they have patrols on the beaches and the rivers. You never know when you might need them. It costs a huge amount to launch the all-weather boat and payment of any kind is never expected (and seldom given, sad to say). Exmouth is one of the busiest stations in the country with not only the seaside places to look after but the rivers where there is a lot of activity. Jean Carpenter WOODBURY TWINNING ASSOCIATION VISIT TO ROSEMOOR SATURDAY 14 JUNE Open to all. Phone Jan Owen for more information on 232694.

Anyone using a rollator trolley or Zimmerframe would not have a problem.
19 W.S.W.I. Cont’d/… The speaker was Sharon Beech from the Hawkridge Bird of Prey Centre. Sharon had brought along four birds to show while she talked about them. The smallest, named Taz, was a Southern White Faced Skop. Members donned gloves, which were handed round, and Taz happily flew from one to another while Sharon fed her her tea of raw chicken. Bracken, a baby barn owl, then followed and then Echo, a European eagle owl who was a seasoned performer who excels at entertaining schoolchildren and residents in retirement homes. Last was a kestrel. The birds all seemed quite at ease and made themselves at home – so much so that there were three patches of floor to clean up afterwards! Sharon was warmly thanked for a splendid talk and members loved seeing these beautiful birds at close quarters. The monthly coffee morning at The Diggers’ Rest will be on Thursday 17 April at 11.00 and the speaker for the April meeting on the 9th will be Connie Thomas on Farms for City Children. WHIST DRIVE TUESDAY 15 APRIL, 7.30 AT WOODBURY SALTERTON VILLAGE HALL

20 WOODBURY SALTERTON C. OF E. SCHOOL World Book Day The storyteller David Heathfield visited the school on World Book Day to tell stories and lead workshops with the children, who were dressed as book characters. Afterwards he sent this message to the school: ‘Thanks to you all for making me so welcome. It was a joy to tell world stories with young people who are being so creative. I enjoyed the morning performance and the workshops in which the students interacted so imaginatively with the story-telling. Let all the students know again how impressed I am by their story-telling skills – you are clearly doing some effective creative teaching at Woodbury Salterton’.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR From Andy Price It is thrilling to hear that the Parish Council is keen to support the Exe Estuary Trail and obviously the best way to do that is to join it! Your council meeting report speaks of Rydon Lane forming part of the route which is great, but Rydon Lane has been sporting 'Road Closed' signs since last August to my certain knowledge. I have spoken to SW Roads about this and they seemed unaware of this impediment. Signs not withstanding, I have ridden the road almost daily on my bike. My bike, it pains me to say, is now a 'dirty bike’. From Higher Bagmores Farm to the turning right on to the main road the lane is in very poor condition and passage is hazardous, with the surface broken, large puddles and deposits of liquid mud. I suppose what I want to say is: if the plan to incorporate Rydon lane is to work for everybody, some serious repair will be needed, to a standard to enable farmers to use their access route with the machinery they must use, at all months of the year. Is there an alternative pedestrian/cycle route incorporating the footpath which skirts the breakers’ yard and follows the stream to Exton? Might this be a cheaper, safer option in the long term? Do we still do 'long term' these days? I'm not sure. In passing, can I suggest that in discussion of the rights and responsibilities of motorists, cyclist and pedestrians that we refrain from pejorative descriptions. We all know that there are badly behaved elements in all the user groups, intemperate name calling serves no useful purpose. From Nick Hall Just a quick reminder that the new edition of Our Local Expert will be distributed in the middle of April, free through doors in Woodbury with your post. Anyone who hasn’t received the 2014-15 edition by the end of April can contact me and I will be happy to post out a free copy: Nick Hall, 01395 513869, Nick@OurLocalExpert.co.uk You and your readers have always been very supportive of Our Local Expert. This is a free guide of businesses that have been used and recommended by local people. Readers know they can expect a trustworthy and good quality service from anyone listed – reducing the fear of ‘cowboys’ and ‘rogue traders’. Reducing Waste and Recycling Along with other schools across Devon our school is rising to the challenge to reduce packed lunch waste to as close to zero as possible, in a bid to take care of the environment. The children have done an audit of the school’s packed lunch waste and came up with these suggestions: ¨ Bring sandwiches in a reusable container instead of foil or cling film. ¨ Bring drinks in a refillable bottle rather than pouches or cartons which can only be used once. ¨ Avoid snack packs which have a lot of packaging which ends up in the bin and then landfill. A further audit is planned in March to monitor progress. There is a prize worth £250 for the best results in Devon but, whether our school wins or not, it is proud to be working together to take care of the planet for the children’s future.
RSPB AYLESBEARE COMMON RESERVE The last few weeks has brought a welcome break from rain and even some sunshine, encouraging the first brimstone butterflies to venture out along woodland edges, a sure sign of spring. Other butterflies seen on the wing are red admiral, peacock, small tortoiseshell and comma. The birds are singing and the first chiffchaffs have arrived. The end of the month should see the first arrivals of house martins, sand martins and swallows. The fencing around Aylesbeare and Harpford is now complete and our ten Dartmoor ponies have been grazing there for a few weeks now. They have certainly been making the most of their free rein and have been grazing widely over the common, though this does make them trickier to keep an eye on! Over on Withycombe Raleigh Common the final stretch of posts has gone along the Bystock road for completing the fenceline and two water troughs have also been installed. We are expecting to have it stock proof and to move a small group of Exmoor ponies on by the end of April. We are spending a couple of days this month working at Stockland for the parish council. This has involved thinning out the scrub but leaving select trees to create an area of wood pasture which will be grazed in the spring with native breeds, such as galloways.
LITTLE ACORN PRE-SCHOOL The art work produced by Little Acorn Pre-School is always of great interest to all who use the Village Hall and is much admired.
The current picture is headed transport and one of the methods of transport depicted is the Acorn Air plane - which features photos of some of the children who attend Little Acorns peeping out of the windows.

ALLOTMENT GARDENING – IS IT FOR YOU? Woodbury is fortunate to have a wonderful allotment site for local residents to ‘grow their own’ and now Woodbury Salterton is about to open their own site. The w eather and conditions over the past year have been c h a l le n g i n g , from flooding last winter to dry conditions and a slow start in the Photo - Woodbury allotment holders’ Summer Party 2013 summer. Overall, plot holders harvested plenty of lovely vegetables, fruit and flowers. Apart from obvious benefits of having an allotment, the exercise, fresh air and social interaction are priceless and anyone you speak to will tell you how much better they feel after spending time outside. There are always successes and failures, some weather conditions suit one thing and not another, but conditions challenge us to try other ways of doing things, swopping ideas, asking advice from more experienced gardeners. We are learning all the time; that is what makes it so interesting. If you feel that you would like to join the list for a plot, the number to ring is below. The wait for an allotment is not very long at the moment, as many Woodbury Salterton applicants will move onto the list for the plots there. WOODBURY PARISH COUNCIL FLY-POSTING IN THE PARISH! The Parish Council is aware of, and regrets, the shortage of Public Notice boards in the parish, for which reason Council has been sympathetic to the use of unofficial sites, such as, and in particular, telegraph poles! But Council is now concerned with the indiscriminate proliferation of flyposting, which has led to an unacceptably serious abuse of goodwill arising from abandoned, long-out-of-date posters and notices, spoiling the appearance of all three villages. We are also aware, and appreciate, the majority of households are proud to preserve the caring image of our community, and, therefore, this statement is addressed to the indifferent, irresponsible, minority: The Parish Council hereby gives notice that unless all out-of-date and mostly tattered poster-remnants are removed immediately after use, Council will reluctantly take serious measures to curb the unofficial utilisation of telegraph poles for displaying notices and posters. Please also note, if The Parish Council’s request remains unheeded, their use will be prohibited altogether! WPC.

EXTON LADIES GROUP AGM for 2014 Chris Bilyard outlined the many and various events that had taken place during the past year. Treasurer, Jenny West, announced that the group had a healthy balance and that subscriptions would remain at £20 for the coming year. As there were no nominations for co-ordinator, Chris agreed to do it for one more year. Pauline Sturtridge offered to become the new Treasurer with help from Valerie Thomas. Audrey Elphick has also offered to continue the write-ups for the Woodbury News and also to continue keeping a record of our various activities. Eileen Pratt thanked Chris for all the hard work that she had put into the group over the last year. This is a thriving and friendly group with over thirty members who will make any lady who wishes to join us feel very welcome. It is also a very good way for ladies who are new to our village to get to know their neighbours. Just give Chris Bilyard a call on 01392 875974. February Meeting In February we welcomed Mrs April Marjoram to our meeting to speak on the painters of Exmouth before 1910, such artists as Danby, Widgery, Martens and Luny, all of whom had exhibited at the RA. A few were Devonian but mainly painters came to Exmouth attracted by the mild climate, the light and the beauty of the estuary, framed and enhanced by the Haldon Hills. There were also many visitors to Exmouth at this time drawn themselves by the mild climate and they became the clients of the painters as they wished to take home a record of their visit to the area. There was much painting going on in seventeenth and eighteenth century Exmouth and an Exmouth Art School was set up, the foundation stone for which can still be seen in New North Road. The paintings depicted a very different coastline from that of today’s Exmouth, although the row of houses along the Beacon with the parish church behind was readily recognisable. One recurring feature no longer to be seen in Exmouth was the windmill, reputedly burnt down when the wooden sails caught fire due to a spark generated by the friction on the turning sails. Many of the paintings showed a very busy estuary, reminding us of how important Exmouth had been as a port. Cont’d/…

Some of the images we saw are on view at Exmouth library, which holds a sizable collection of paintings in their archives, some were from RAMM and others from a variety of museums and private collectors. This was both a fascinating and informative look at the Exmouth coastline and estuary, illustrating not only how much the landscape has changed but also the importance of Exmouth to painters and visitors at that time.
March Meeting cont/d ... The airport was sold by Devon CC in 2007 to a consortium and in June 2013 was bought by Patriot Aerospace Division of the Rigby Group which also owns Coventry Airport. Today, the airport is thriving as more people take holidays abroad. There are no flights to London as it is deemed too close to be viable. Janet Atkins thanked Stephen for a very interesting talk. The next meeting will be on Thursday 10 April when the speaker will be Jennifer Kirkham–Sandy talking about Books in the Changing World. At the May meeting, Julian Limb will tell us about his recent trip to India and in June the will be a trip to Dartmouth.

March Meeting Stephen Ayres gave an informative talk entitled Exeter Airport – Then & Now. The airport had started as a grass field for club flying before being constructed in 1937 and opened as Exeter Airport in 1938 at a cost of approx. £20.000. In WW2 it was an important RAF Fighter Command airfield during the Battle of Britain. It was also used by the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force as a D Day troop transport base, taking paratroops to land on Normandy beach head. In 1946 it was made available for civil use. Exeter was a joint RAF/civil airfield right up until the 1960s.

COMMUNITY POLICE REPORT PCSO 30028 Donna Baker, Tel 08456 569412 Donna.baker@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk On Sunday 16 February a dog walker was bitten whilst trying to separate his dog from two other dogs that had attacked his dog. The dogs were being walked on Woodbury Common. On Tuesday 18 February a car parked on Woodbury Common was broken into; the rear window was smashed and a handbag and contents stolen. Also on Tuesday 18 February a second car was targeted; the door lock was damaged but no entry gained. We have had more thefts from motor vehicles in other tourist/dog walker venues so I would stress the importance of never leaving valuables in your car; please be aware you might be watched as you so carefully hide that handbag in the boot! Have your say – if you have any local police issues you wish to raise with me please contact me either by the above phone number or email; or, you can speak to me on Friday 25 April when I will be in the Village Hall car park at 9.00am. Suspicious person Exton – an unknown male rang the door bell of a property in Exton in the early hours of Sunday 9 March; this person may have been looking for an unoccupied property. I would ask all residents to report any unusual/suspicious activity in your area to the police using the 101 number. Be particularly vigilant in checking both vehicle and house security particularly when away from your property. Thank you. A day-time burglary occurred on 11 March on Exmouth Road, Exton, between 10am and 1pm, cash stolen.

If you would like to join the list for a plot at Woodbury or Woodbury Salterton, please contact the Parish Clerk, Belinda Price on 01395 233791, or by post at Winkworth Estate Agents opposite the village green in Woodbury.

Class 2 Vintage Lunch Mrs Milford and the PTA have jointly organised the launch of a vintage lunchtime for Class 2. On Monday 31 March lunch will be served as normal but using vintage china and the tables will be covered with lace tablecloths. If successful it is planned to extend this to the whole school.

2014 FESTIVAL OF FOLK, ROOTS AND BLUES In aid of Force Cancer Charity and following its now established midsummer/midwinter pattern of events Bluesbury Music is producing its second music festival in Woodbury. Taking place over Friday 20 and Saturday 21 June at the Maltsters Arms, the line-up includes a range of artistes from upcoming youngsters to performers who've been around for years. The Friday evening line-up includes folk/indie newcomer with a growing reputation Cloudi Lewis, the ever popular Hooper & Mills, 'ragtime with stiletto heels' from Josie Lloyd, and following his very well received performance at last year’s festival, Alex Kumar. Saturday evening features the no nonsense Blue Swayed Blues, Ben & Si's Stompin' Blues who as Cicoya Big Tree Blues went down a storm last year, The Travelling Photo above - Josie Lloyd Bluesburys with the big man himself and Photo below - Cloudi Lewis finally The Buffalo Angels, Julian Piper's new line-up who were 'knock out' at Christmas. All performers and organisers have agreed to donate their time for free for this worthwhile charity. Saturday afternoon events are planned to feature a number of community groups, choirs, ukuleles, local talent and one or two more established performers. There’s the added attraction of Cream Teas. News of which groups will be taking part will be announced as soon as confirmations are received. In a change from past events admission will be by ticket, available after 1 May, either direct from The Maltsters or by post (with an SAE - old technology) from Bluesbury Music. Ticket prices will be a modest £5 for Friday evening, £5 for Saturday evening or £8 for both. For the Saturday afternoon event, entry will be free, but don't forget the cream tea. WOODBURY SALTERTON NEWS HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, WOODBURY SALTERTON Church Annual Meeting The Vestry and Annual Parochial Church Meeting will take place on Monday 7 April at 7.00pm in church. This is usually a short meeting but the PCC would welcome members of the congregation to show their support and interest in the running of the church as we review the past year by coming to this meeting . Church Spring Clean and Churchyard Tidying Your support for this would be greatly appreciated. We need volunteers to help with polishing and cleaning our church inside and to do some pruning and general tidying outside in the churchyard. We meet in church on Saturday 5 April at 9.30am. Geoff and Debbie will be serving bacon butties with coffee. Come and enjoy a good chat – even if you don’t feel able to spare the time to clean! The Weekly Coffee Mornings which have replaced the lych gate stalls will start for the summer on Saturday 7 June – from 9.30 until 10.30 outside the church porch if fine and inside if not. Before that we have the May event (with bacon butties) on Saturday 3rd at 9.30. Family Service Sarah Hornblower conducted the February Service. Jeremy Lambert read the story of The Good Samaritan and Sarah then talked about it. Prayers were read by Libby Windle. Alice Rooke, Esme Taylor and Eliza Rooke read a prayer Eliza had written – a brave effort for a five-year-old! Easter Lilies Please contact Sheila Gerdes if you wish to donate a lily for the floral decorations at Easter . WOODBURY SALTERTON 2000 After our break last year Woodbury Salterton 2000 is celebrating May Day on 5 May at 11.00, starting the parade from the Diggers’ Rest. There will be two themes this year to make up for last year. So we are asking the children who follow the parade on their bikes to dress as World War I characters or footballers to remember the Exeter Brazil match 100 years ago. There will be prizes for the best costume in three age groups. As usual there will be stalls, raffle, teas and coffee and barbecue. BANGERS AND MASH EVENING In aid of Woodbury Salterton Village Hall SATURDAY 29 MARCH, 7.30PM Tickets £7.50, children under 12, £5. Bring your own drinks - delicious desserts will be served. Tickets from Pat Bricknell on 232463 who also can take bookings for the hall as well as the hiring of tables and chairs.
RECIPE OF THE MONTH White chocolate, apricot and whisky bread and butter pudding This is a luxurious dish and it certainly isn’t for calorie counters. Who cares when it tastes as good as this! Serves 6. INGREDIENTS ¨ 4 large all-butter croissants, thickly sliced ¨ 100g soft dried apricots roughly chopped ¨ 40g butter, softened ¨ 500ml double cream ¨ 500ml full milk ¨ 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (or vanilla paste) ¨ 200g white chocolate, roughly chopped ¨ 3 free-range eggs ¨ 4 free-range egg yolks ¨ 200g caster sugar ¨ 75ml whisky ¨ 2 tbsp icing sugar, to dust METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180C. 2. Lay the croissant slices in an ovenproof dish with the apricot chunks layered in between, then dot with the softened butter. 3. Place the cream, milk and vanilla in a saucepan. Bring just to the boil then take off the heat and add the chocolate and whisk until melted. 4. Place the eggs, egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and whisk to combine. Pour the hot chocolate custard over the eggs, add the whiskey and whisk to combine. 5. Ladle the mixture over the croissants and set aside for 30 minutes to soak. 6. Cover with aluminium foil and place in the oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden-brown and the custard is just set. 7.

We were all glued to the news so no need to elaborate further here. The stats were: 213.1 mm of rain (8.39 ins and 336% of average), max/min temperatures of 13C/3C – so very warm for February. Following on from the record levels of rainfall in December and January we now have a three month run which surpasses anything we have seen before by a country mile.
