Woodland Hill Montessori School – a diverse and engaging educational partnership of parents, teachers, children, and community – nurtures a child’s love of learning and sense of social and personal responsibility using the child-centered Montessori philosophy and curriculum to develop the intellectual, spiritual, physical, artistic, and academic excellence inherent in each child.
Dear Woodland Hill Community,
As we reflect on this past year, it is clear that Woodland Hill is thriving and evolving. Our 342 students are not only discovering new knowledge and embracing hard work, but also experiencing the deep fulfillment of learning in the company of friends. Despite the challenges we face in the world, the strength of our community continues to inspire optimism and underscores the power of connection.
Woodland Hill remains deeply committed to preparing our students to be leaders, innovators, and change-makers—individuals who can make a positive difference in the world. Our teachers, with their expertise, passion, and care, create an environment where curiosity, perseverance, and collaboration flourish. It is truly an honor to be part of this extraordinary community.
This year, we also made significant investments in our physical spaces to enhance the learning and community experience. Through the generous support of our donors, we were able to upgrade our playground with new equipment for each level. The newly enclosed Elementary Alcove provides space for small group study and collaborative projects, and the new patio has become a favorite gathering place for our adolescent community.
As we approach 60 years since our founding, Woodland Hill is well-positioned to continue serving the next 60 years of students and their families. I am deeply grateful to the Woodland Hill community, both past and present, for shaping the school we have become. Your ongoing support enables us to continue living our mission: to nurture and cultivate the intellectual, emotional, physical, artistic, and academic excellence inherent in each child.
Michelle Edwards Head of School
Dear Woodland Hill Family,
It is with great pleasure that I write to you on behalf of the Board of Trustees! I would like to provide you with an overview of the Board’s role and highlight our key focus areas over the past year.
The role of the Board of Trustees in an independent school is to provide strategic oversight and governance, ensuring that the school remains true to its mission, upholds its values, and continues to thrive academically and financially. We work closely with the Head of School to support the school’s long-term sustainability and the continued success of our students.
One of the Board’s key priorities this year was engaging in a comprehensive strategic planning process. Through thoughtful discussions and collaboration with parents, board members, the administration, and faculty, we have laid the foundation for the school’s future growth. The plan outlines our goals of Building for the Future, including Academic Richness, Community Strength, and Sustainability, while staying true to the core values that make WHMS a special place for our children.
Another critical area of focus for the Board is the financial sustainability of our school. As an independent institution, WHMS relies heavily on tuition, fundraising, and strategic financial planning to ensure we can continue offering exceptional educational opportunities. The Board continues to work diligently to strengthen our financial position through careful budgeting, and building and identifying additional fundraising opportunities. We aim to ensure that WHMS remains accessible and affordable while continuing to provide the high-quality education our students deserve.
We also recognize that our school’s success depends on the ongoing engagement and support of our parents, alumni, and friends. Your involvement is critical to the success of our strategic initiatives and the financial health of the school. As such, I know that the WHMS administration and Friends of WHMS have worked diligently to create and expand opportunities for parent involvement, and we hope you have found meaningful ways to engage with our community. Additionally, your contributions to the WHMS Fund and Soiree directly impact the enrichment of our students’ educational experience and we are incredibly grateful for your generosity.
Looking ahead, we are excited about the opportunities that our strategic plan, Building for the Future, will bring, and we remain deeply committed to ensuring WHMS continues to provide an outstanding education, enrich our students’ lives, and foster a community that values learning, growth, and inclusivity.
As the holiday season approaches, I wish you and your families peace and joy.
Warm Regards,
Julie Knox

In mid-April, we hosted our five-year accreditation visit from the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) and the American Montessori Society (AMS). Accreditation is a comprehensive process that requires schools to undergo an in-depth self-study and review to meet the highest standards
set by these esteemed organizations. Woodland Hill has been accredited by AMS since 1999, and we are proud to have achieved full accreditation through NYSAIS in 2017.
On January 23, 2024, the Chinese Community Center of the Capital Region hosted a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration for WHMS students in the gym. In collaboration with the WHMS Diversity Committee, a dedicated team of volunteer performers shared the history and traditions of Lunar New Year, culminating in an exciting dragon parade that delighted the audience.
On January 23, 2024, current and past WHMS parents came together on Zoom for WHMS Outcomes: A Parent Panel. During the event, the former parents shared insights into their children’s experiences at WHMS, their transitions to high school, and where they are today. The panel was well attended, with community members engaging in meaningful and thoughtful discussions about their families’ journeys.
Black History Month school-wide acknowledgments began with a performance about local hero Henry Johnson on February 8, 2024, and continued with two performances from Bright Star Theatre: “Empowered, Beautiful, and Black” and “Black History Hall of Fame” on February 27, 2024.
Friends of WHMS hosted a Teddy Bear Clinic facilitated by WHMS parent Dr. Sean Conner on March 9. The event was designed to familiarize students with medical procedures and inspire them to learn more about the role of medical professionals. Throughout the morning, students and their stuffed animals participated in hands-on activities, including physical exams, immunizations, x-rays, interventions (such as stitches, splints, or casting for their “patients”), and CPR demonstrations.
On March 15, Lower Elementary students showcased their creativity and knowledge at the History and Heroes Learning Fair. Each student proudly presented a display about their chosen hero, sharing their inspiring stories with fellow students and parents.
The WHMS Talent Show returned on Friday, March 24, 2024 run by the Friends of WHMS. Sixteen different acts performed with confidence by Primary to Middle School students.

After two years of planning and construction, the new ball field is complete! The inaugural event was the highly anticipated Upper Elementary/ Middle School Kickball Showdown, where families and students came together for a lively kids-versus-adults match, full of fun and friendly competition. The recent renovations have also been a gamechanger for our soccer team, offering more practice space and a field closer to
regulation size—a wonderful upgrade for our school community!
A once-neglected space at school has been transformed into the Elementary Alcove—an inviting, enclosed area designed for students to collaborate and work in small groups.
Exciting updates have been made to our playgrounds, creating even more fun and safe spaces for students to play and explore. Over the summer, a spider web climber was added to the Primary playground, and in late August, the Elementary and Middle School playgrounds welcomed the Saturn 3 and Supernova carousels. In September, two tire swings were also installed on the Primary playground, adding even more enjoyment for our younger students.
A beautiful new patio was built in front of the Middle School classrooms over the summer. Complete with tables and seating, this outdoor space provides students with a great spot to enjoy lunch, collaborate, and work in the fresh air.
Over the summer, the school underwent several updates to refresh and enhance the environment just in time for the new school year. Two adult bathrooms were fully renovated, the original hallway tiles were replaced with new flooring, and the lobby was outfitted with functional and practical new furniture, creating a more welcoming and efficient space.
To kick off the school year, WHMS faculty enjoyed a day of enriching professional development virtually from Matti Wafford and Amy Cushner at the Red Barn in East Greenbush. Maati Wafford guided teachers through a grounding session focused on reflection and connection, encouraging them to tend to the child within them in order to teach the child in front of them. Amy Cushner provided a Montessori framework for supporting all children including those with learning differences.

Jonathan is serving as a coach to our faculty and administration and will be offering observations and feedback to our faculty. On Friday, March 1, 2024 more than 210 guests came together in the beautiful Franklin Plaza Ballroom in downtown Troy for our annual Soirée, Enchanted. It was a magical evening filled with warmth and community, and thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised nearly $68,000 for Woodland Hill Montessori School! Even more exciting, $34,000 of that will go directly toward new equipment for the WHMS playground, creating a wonderful space for our children to play and grow.
This achievement was made possible through the generous support of our corporate sponsors, honorary committee members, donors, and auction participants. We are deeply grateful for your contributions and commitment to our community!
