WELCOME PAUL KENNY

Dear Readers, As the dust settles on the inaugural NZB Standardbred All Aged Sale at Karaka, as all eyes turn to the first running of the Harness Jewels at Addington and as the initial round of legislative endorsement of the Minister’s plans to revitalise Racing look set to become a reality, times are indeed changing – and so it is most appropriate that we welcome you all to our own first edition of the “Woodlands Word”. We trust you find the various observations and reflections from our kind contributors both informative and thought provoking. Opportunities to advance this country’s breeding and racing industries abound right now and we at Woodlands Stud are excited to be at the forefront of each.

NEWS SWEET LOU’S DAUGHTER ANNEXES GROUP 1 FEATURE

Sweet Lou’s ace New Zealand daughter Sweet On Me bounced back from her first defeat to win the Group 1 New Zealand Sires Stakes for 2yo fillies at Alexandra Park, Auckland. In the $138,000 feature, she used her speed to take over mid race and roared away in a closing quarter of 26.8 to secure victory. Sweet On Me is the standout filly of her peer group thus far and now heads to the Harness Jewels at Addington, she has bankrolled over $170,000 in stakes. Bettor’s Delight’s millionaire son Spankem added to his outstanding 4yo season when he led all the way to win the Group 1 ‘Messenger Stakes’ at Auckland. Scooting home in 54.3, Spankem has been a revelation this season and will be nominal favourite for Horse of the Year in New Zealand. Bettor’s Delight’s progeny filled the placings in the $160,000 PGG Wrightson 2yo Sale Series Final at Addington. One Change maintained his undefeated juvenile season when he won the feature ahead of Smooth Deal. No shortage of winners for American Ideal, he sired a double at Invercargill when Firenze Amore and 2yo The Ideal Touch greeted the judge, American Zest was a Melton winner, Triple Eight sat in the chair to win at Auckland and Ideal Some Magic, continued on his winning way at Bendigo.

WOODLANDS WORD // 6

When Andrew and Lyn Neal put their latest find, Louie The Horse, on a float on Sunday morning they’ll do so knowing where he’s heading, but just what assignments await him sits very much in limbo. The son of sire of the moment, Sweet Lou, was an emphatic winner at last week’s Manawatu meeting and the victory told his Cambridge based trainers that he was ready for a slightly bigger assignment – the bright lights of Addington and, all going well, a spot at the Harness Jewels. Currently 12th on the order of entry for the 2YO

Emerald and sitting with a $3,000 buffer on the next closest horse in the list it’s likely he’ll grab himself a spot in the $150,000 event – but it’s not the only reason he’s heading to Christchurch. “We’re not really sure at this point whether he’ll work his way into the Sires’ Stakes Final or not,” Lyn Neal said.

“They’ve told us it’s likely, but to be honest we’d be just happy to get into the consolation if that’s what happens. But he’s on the float on Sunday and we’ll see what unfolds once we get down there.” Purchased by Grant and Joanna Eynon for $16,000 at the Weanling Sales two years ago when offered by Woodlands Stud, the second foal of a daughter of the former Harness Jewels winning mare, Running On Faith – Louie The Horse wasn’t even on the agenda.

was never going to be an early season two-yearold, he just needed that time to develop that little bit more and he should keep getting better with time. “At the moment he’s still a little small, but when he fills out, he’s going to be even more impressive, I think. “He’s the only Sweet Lou we’ve had, but I can’t fault him and we’ll be looking to send a mare to him at some point in the

“HE’S THE ONLY SWEET LOU WE’VE HAD, BUT I CAN’T FAULT HIM AND WE’LL BE LOOKING TO SEND A MARE TO HIM AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE, BUT I CAN CERTAINLY ONLY SAY GOOD THINGS.” “Grant went along to the sales looking at a number of other horses that were being offered by Woodlands but wasn’t really taken by any of them and ended up buying Louie instead. “It was actually the day of Mum’s funeral that he brought him and when he won at Manawatu it was on Mum’s birthday, so he’s a bit special.”

future, but I can certainly only say good things.” And should the trip to Christchurch turn out to be even better than what is hoped for the Neals’, Eynons’ and Louie The Horse then those opinions could be even greater come the end of the season.

With the trademark head-turning looks that Sweet Lou is leaving in many of his progeny, Neal said she was amazed at the reaction she received when she got to Manawatu last week.

While there’s plenty of encouraging signs already for the striking individual, now is only the beginning for Louie The Horse with the Neals firmly of the opinion that time is going to be their friend. “He’s a lovely horse to do anything with, really great natured and has taken to it all quickly, but he

“Everyone fell in love with him, just like we did, but he had a bit of a fan club by the end of it all,” she laughed.

oodlands Stud is very quickly making a name for themselves as a leading equine kindergarten in the harness racing industry. The proof of this is their strong line ups at both the annual yearling and weanling sales at Karaka. Partyon, My Hard Copy, Jesse Duke, Spanish Armada, Smooth Deal and Forgotten Highway are just some of the names to come out of the prolific stud farm in recent years. After a successful sale of their yearling draft in February, Woodlands Stud repeated the feat at the All Aged Sale in Karaka this week. A draft of 54 quality weanlings were put through the ring under the Stud’s banner, with plenty of loyal buyers returning once again to buy a weanling from the Stud. Of the 54 weanlings, 53 were sold for an average price of $10,797. Progeny from their own sires, Bettor’s Delight, Sweet Lou, American Ideal, Pegasus Spur and Highview Tommy made up 52 of those lots and their past sire Crazed sired the other two lots. Up-and-coming sire Sweet Lou had another strong sale, with his average reaching $12,094 for this 24 sons and daughters that went under the hammer - double the price of his service fee. His son out of the Group 1 winning mare Arden Banner topped his progeny selling for $42,000 to Philippa Hanley, who has been a very loyal support of both Sweet Lou and Woodlands Stud.

Other strong sales for Sweet Lou were his beautiful filly out of Saturation who sold to Rob Lawson for $20,000. Australian buyers Tumby Park Pty Ltd ended up purchasing three lots by Sweet Lou – a colt out of Styxler for $24,000, a colt out of Bettabe Fast for $16,000 and a filly out of Lislass for $13,000.

WOODLANDS WORD // 10

American Ideal also had a strong sale with an average of $12,708 for his 13 lots under Woodlands Stud. He sired the sales topper for the draft, a colt out of the well-related mare Delightful Image who sold to Australian buyers for $48,000. Bettor’s Delight was represented by just five lots in the draft, 3 fillies and two colts. Murray Matthews, another supporter of Woodlands Stud, purchased a colt out of Miss Lonnie for $23,000 along with a Sweet Lou colt out of Ideal Quest for $20,000.

// SWEET LOU HAD ANOTHER STRONG SALE, WITH HIS AVERAGE REACHING $12,094 FOR THIS 24 SONS AND DAUGHTERS THAT WENT UNDER THE HAMMER

Colonial sire Highview Tommy had his strongest sale to date with five of his weanlings all selling well in the ring and reaching his highest ever sale price with his colt out of Tania Tandias.

The trotting sires Pegasus Spur and Crazed were supported well by known trotting trainer Alan Clark, who purchased two by Pegasus Spur and one by Crazed. Barry Lichter purchased a weanling filly by Pegasus Spur for $6,000, she was out of a mare that Lichter owns himself called Landora’s Jewel. Woodlands Stud thank everyone who purchased off them and wish you all the very best with your purchases! Details of their draft for the 2020 NZB Standardbred Yearling Sales will be available in the coming months.

There was a strong Australian presence at the sales, including Victorian’s Kath McIntosh, Dean Coughlin and Greg Fleming who picked up a Bettor’s Delight filly out of the mare Diamond Like for $18,000. Along with her they had another four purchases from the draft including an American Ideal filly for $10,000 and a Sweet Lou colt for $15,000.

the elite end in juvenile racing. He was the USTA leading sire by Average Stakes per horse and second leading sire for 2yo’s overall. His daughter Warrawee Ubeaut was the leading 2yo by stakes and speed, breaking a world record by going 1.48.3. Currently the second leading sire of 2yo’s behind Bettors Delight in New Zealand, Sweet Lou is also the leading dollar average stallion in Australia at a staggering $24,500 - well ahead of any of his peers! So far ‘down under’ he is the sire of seven winners, including early Group and Classic winners. He is currently the leading first season sire in Australasia and has many other qualifiers to date. His sale results are also strong, with all of his stock fetching an average of at least double his service fee at the recent sales across Australasia. In the shed after the 2018/19 season, he was the most sought-after stallion in Australia and New Zealand and that will continue into the 2019/20 season. Due to his success Woodlands Stud are pleased to announce that his service fee for the coming season will be $7,500 + GST across both Australia and New Zealand.

His first USA crop saw Sweet Lou off to a great start and his ‘down under’ progeny are already at

weet Lou had close to $3.5 million in stakes and a racing CV most stallions would be envious of. His pedigree ‘down under’ was a little bit left of centre for some when he arrived, and breeders looked the other way apart from a hardcore group of breeders, and of course his Southern Hemisphere home Woodlands Stud threw their support behind him.

His book for the coming season in Australia is already full and his New Zealand book is filling fast, so don’t miss your opportunity to bred your mare to Sweet Lou and join us for the sweet taste of success in the future!
