WELCOME STACEY WHITE
Dear Readers, It’s great to see the racing really starting to ramp up as we approach Cup Week. There have been many great runs in the lead up to the NZ Trotting Cup, but it’s hard to look past Spankem who has been very consistent in all of his recent runs. We don’t have long to wait to find out who will take out the prestigious race. This week we have a look at the win of Alpine Delight in Auckland, the success of the Woodlands Stud Sires at the Breeders Crown in Canada over the weekend and some other updates from Australia and America.
We hope you enjoy this edition of Woodlands Word, and we wish all of our breeders the best of luck with their foaling and serving in the coming weeks and months.

ALPINE DELIGHT WINNING AT ALEXANDRA PARK IN THE HANDS OF JOSH DICKIE - RACE IMAGES
// TIME IS ON THE SIDE OF SEASWIFT BREED WOODLANDS WORD // 6
// MATT SMITH
Golfers often get better with a bit of experience under the belt and it seems like a similar situation with the breed that Canterbury man Mike Prendergast has been associated with for almost 30 years.
Prendergast, a retired transport contractor, joined the Seaswift Syndicate in 1992 but is now enjoying the fruits of his breeding venture through the promising Alpine Delight.
Unfortunately, the gelding picked up a bug on the way north and wasn’t able to produce his best in two Alexandra Park starts in the winter, settling for a 4th and a 3rd. “He needed another six weeks out in the paddock and now he’s come back and is showing a little bit of his true potential.” The presence of Alpine Delight goes all the way back to that syndicate in 1992 which didn’t start off in a rip-roaring manner with Talk About Class mare Seaswift Franco when Prendergast teamed up with Wayne Francis, Malcolm Shinn, Bobby Redmond, Doug Chapman and Jack Smolenski. “We raced her from the 1st of August and she had one start at Kurow (on August 10) and she broke down.” Francis donated two free services to Holmes Hanover as a consolation and the second of those services produced Seabreeze Franco. As Seaswift Franco grew older, the progeny seemed to get better and it’s a trait that has been passed down through the fillies.
The last foal of Seabreeze Franco (Holmes Hanover) was always a “well-grown colt” and broke in nicely under the care of John “Coaster” Howe. “He won a trial in April and was under offer but that fell through,” Prendergast said. “So I decided to hang on to him and send him to Auckland because he went better that way around.”
Prendergast and Shinn took turns breeding from Seaswift Franco, ending with an Art Major colt for Prendergast named Majestic Major. He won three in New Zealand before being sold across the Tasman where he finished with 36 wins in his career including dual group success in 2014. The syndicate also went turn about with breeding rights for Seabreeze Franco and Prendergast’s first turn produced Initforfun (Christian Cullen, four wins).

Alpine Delight (Bettor’s Delight) lines up tonight in race 5 at Alexandra Park and looks capable of measuring up in a few races over the coming months. It hasn’t come without its challenges though.
Swift Belle (Christian Cullen) was the last foal that the syndicate bred together, and while she didn’t make her mark on the track, her second foal Seaswift Joy earned more than $136,000 and 11 wins in 40 starts.
Shinn and the Redmond family then bred Royal Counsel before Prendergast’s final foal out of Seabreeze Franco was Alpine Delight.
from this year, but he will pick up his option on Swift Belle instead.
Prendergast had some success with Initforfun as a broodmare too with Chapter One, Speedy Mach and Bella Roza all collecting wins, including some for his Weedons Golf Club mates with Chapter One and Bella Roza. Prendergast also had useful results with Seabreeze Hanover, the third foal out of Seaswift Franco, through Alpine Art, Alpine Andy, Elusive Flight and Raphoe. Initiforfun was found dead in a paddock in early 2018, and would have been his sole mare to breed
“This year it’s my turn with her so I’ll breed her to Sweet Lou.”

BREEDERS CROWN JOY FOR WOODLANDS STUD STALLIONS The Breeders Crown finals were held in Canada this weekend past and the Woodlands Stud stallions cast a big shadow over the pacing finals, which were held at Woodbine racetrack. With a total of six pacing divisions held, our stallion roster, walked away with five Breeders Crown final winners. At 21 years old, Bettor’s Delight sired the 2yo colts and gelding’s winner in Tall Dark Stranger, this was juvenile win number eight for this stylish pacer. Bettor’s Delight’s top flight daughter Caviart Ally paced 1.49.3 to win the Breeders Crown mares pace. This was her twenty fourth career win and she has banked over $1.6 million in earnings. Sweet Lou had a day to remember when he sired both 3yo Breeders Crown winners. His champion daughter Warrawee Ubeaut, clinically despatched her rivals in the filly’s division, pacing a 1.50.2 mile, she now is the owner of back to back Breeders Crown titles! Late season bloomer Dancing Lou, sprouted wings to win the 3yo final for colts and geldings. Pacing the mile in 1.50.2, he arrived just in time to secure victory. The win of Dancing Lou gave ex pat Australian trainer Tahn Camilleri, a night she will never forget! American Ideals’ son American History, took the short way home to win the Open Breeders Crown Pace final in 1.48.3. The 4yo won the $655,000 final, brushing home in 27 seconds. Just a reminder to Australian breeders that American Ideal’s Australian book is full and closed for the 2019/20 season. Thank you to all breeders who have supported his move to Australia. DOMINANT AT BREEDERS CROWN The Woodlands Stud stallions stamped their mark on this year’s Breeders Crown Finals at Mohawk in Canada, siring five of the six pacing winners. It is one of the biggest nights of racing in the American & Canadian racing program and the stakes on offer are huge. To have access to so many of the sire of the winners, both pacing and trotting, just shows how lucky we are across Australasia to have access to the best of the best in the whole world. Below we take a look at each of the winners sired by Woodlands Stallions (quotes and information from Harnesslink)
2YO PACING COLTS FINAL
Winner: Tall Dark Stranger (Bettor’s Delight)
the beginning of a harness racing story that changed radically after the finish.
Trainer: Nancy Johansson | Driver: Yannick Gingras
The $600,000 (US) Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Colt Pace was expected to be a battle between Papi Rob Hanover (Somebeachsomewhere) and Tall Dark Stranger (Bettor’s Delight). That the two crossed the wire that way was just
Driver Yannick Gingras placed an objection on behalf of Tall Dark Stranger against David Miller on Papi Rob Hanover and after a long period the judges agreed, placing Tall Dark Stranger first and race-winner Papi Rob Hanover second.
Captain Crunch (Captiantreacherous) Tre finished third, while De Los Cielos Deo (Captiantreacherous) was fourth. “I had a little trouble in the last turn getting his momentum going, but once I got him rolling there what a tough horse, he digs and digs.” said McCarthy A son of Sweet Lou, Dancin Lou is trained by Tahnee Camilleri for owners David Kryway and 1362313 Ontario Limited. A bitter battled ensued in the homestretch as the two colts battled head to head right to the wire with Papi Rob Hanover (Somebeachsomewhere) getting his head in front at the wire in the 1:51 mile. The inquiry sign went up quickly and the judges determined that Papi Rob Hanover had made contact with Tall Dark Stranger causing him to lose his momentum. “My colt was fighting back,” said Gingras after the race. “I haven’t made an objection since Yonkers in 2002.”
Camilleri was making her Crown debut and was overcome with emotion in the winner’s circle. “To come here on one of the biggest nights of the year and to be a competitor was such an honour and then to win the race, I’m the luckiest girl in the world.” Dancin Lou has now won 11 of 18 this season, earning $677,756. The sophomore paid $12.80 to win.
Sent off as the second choice in the field Tall Dark Stranger returned $5.80 while notching his eighth win in nine career starts for trainer Nancy Johansson.
3YO PACING COLTS FINAL Winner: Dancin Lou (Sweet Lou)
Trainer: Tahnee Camilleri | Driver: Andy McCarthy
Dancin Lou flew down the outside late in the final stages to nail Bettors Wish (Bettor’s Delight) at the finish line to win the $786,000 (CAD) Breeders Crown 3-Year-Old Colt Pace.
3YO PACING FILLIES FINAL Winner: Warrawee Ubeaut (Sweet Lou) Trainer: Ron Burke | Driver: Yannick Gingras
Driver Andrew McCarthy angled out uncovered from fourth with Dancin Lou entering the far turn. The stretch drive saw Bettors Wish in front with victory in sight, but Dancin Lou and McCarthy came with a final push to make up a couple lengths late and steal the victory by a head in 1:50.2.
Warrawee Ubeaut had to work a bit hard to gain the front but the Sweet Lou-sired filly was again much the best in the $550,000 (US) Breeders Crown for her second consecutive harness racing Crown title.
Driver Yannick Gingras took nothing for granted as Warrawee Ubeaut bore out some in the homestretch keeping the Ron Burke-trained filly to task. Without question she was once again up to it in capturing her second straight Breeders Crown trophy while sprinting home in :27 1/5 final quarter. The mile was paced in 1:50 2/5 by Warrawee Ubeaut who was an overwhelming public choice at 1-5 paying $2.40 for the victory. Tall Drink Hanover (Captaintreacherous) kept her momentum through the homestretch to gain the place spot with Stonebridge Soul (Somebeachsomewhere) advancing late for third. Bred in Ontario by Warrawee Farm of Rockwood, it was the 12th win on the season for Warrawee Ubeaut who is owned by Burke Racing Stable LLC, Phil Collura, J & T Silva, Purnell & Libby and Weaver Bruscemi LLC.
WOODLANDS WORD // 12
“I talked to Ron (Burke) before the race and we didn’t want to have to go hard into the wind. It didn’t work that way,” said Gingras. “She relaxed so good in the third quarter and I think that’s what won the race for her.”
OPEN PACING MALES FINAL Winner: American History (American Ideal) Trainer: Tony Alagna | Driver: Joe Bongiorno
Joe Bongiorno took a route up the rail late to win the $655,000 Breeders Crown Open Pace Final on Saturday at Woodbine Mohawk Park. The time for the harness racing win was 1:48.3. American History (American Ideal), bred by Brittany Farms, sat patiently through a swift quarter in :25.4 before taking the lead. The half was sizzling in :53.4 as McWicked staged a challenging route. Into the stretch, Dorsoduro Hanover began to struggle as Always A Prince was using saved ground to get to McWicked, but on the inside, Bongiorno had a winning path before him and his charge as he passed Dorsoduro Hanover (Somebeachsomewhere) and won in 1:48.3. Always A Prince (Always A Virgin) passed McWicked for third. “No words can describe how I feel winning,” said Bongiorno. “I’m grateful for all the help from Tony [trainer Tony Alagna].”
Alagna said he was confident about American History. “He’s matured and now he is able to go with these guys.” Myron Bell of Brittany Farms said they liked American History as a yearling so much they, “bought him for a hundred-fifty thousand with one bid.” American History (American Ideal--Perfect Touch) paid $12.10 to win.
Andy McCarthy angled Caviart Ally out from fourth on approaching the final turn, and the 5-yearold daughter of Bettor’s Delight motored alongside Shartin N nearing three-quarters in 1:22.3. Caviart Ally stuck a head in front past Shartin N with an eighth of a mile to go, and accelerated away to a clear 1:49.3 score. Shartin N was all-out to narrowly hold second over Kissin In The Sand (Somebeachsomewhere). Brett Pelling trains 24-time winner Caviart Ally, who also defeated Shartin N in the Allerage at The Red Mile on Oct. 6. The Breeders Crown victory lifts Caviart Ally’s career earnings to over $1.7 million.
OPEN PACING MARES FINAL Winner: Caviart Ally (Bettor’s Delight)
Trainer: Brett Pelling | Driver: Andy McCarthy
Caviart Ally (Bettor’s Delight) sustained a firstover push out of midfield to duel down harness racing divisional standout Shartin N (Tintin In America) en route to a going-away 1:49.3 score in the $300,000 (U.S.) Breeders Crown Mare Pace.
“It’s great. It’s an awesome event. Breeders Crown, it’s the ultimate for us in the game and I couldn’t be happier. She’s a great tough mare. She’s got a beautiful nature about her and is one tough girl.” Brett Pelling said

CODE BLACK
Code Black has gone to the top of Harness Racing Victoria’s country cups championship table. The Emma Stewart-trained Code Black ($2.60 favourite) earned top points by taking out the group 3 $35,000 Maryborough Pacing Gold Cup - the second leg of a revamped country cups circuit. The much-travelled seven-year-old led home a Stewart stable trifecta, with Tell Me Tales ($5) a short half head away second and Maraetai ($8.60) third. Code Black had finished second to San Carlo in the Kilmore Pacing Cup. The New Zealand-bred son of Bettors Delight began his Australian racing career with the now Berringabased AJ and BJ Tindale in 2015 and passed through the hands of another five trainers before arriving at his Cardigan home. These include stints in New South Wales and Tasmania. The hardy Code Black has won 18 races and earned $296,000.
***** Fifteen months ago, the highlyregarded New Zealand-bred gelding American Brave broke down when having his second start in a race in Australia and harness racing fans are anxiously awaiting his return to action when he contests the Smallgoods Special Pace over 2130m at Gloucester Park. The son of American Ideal, American Brave fractured his off hind leg, a spiral fracture above the hock, in the race in which he finished sixth behind Our Corelli at Gloucester Park in August 2018. That followed his Australian debut a month earlier when he started from barrier eight, raced wide early and then set the pace before winning by seven and a half lengths from Parisian Partygirl. “He has been in work for quite a while, but he’s still very big,” said champion trainer Gary Hall Snr. “So, he will be underdone and has drawn out wide. But he’s a class horse and hopefully his class will get him through. He is definitely going to improve with the run.”
Andy McCarthy was looking for his first Breeders Crown trophy when he arrived at Woodbine Mohawk Park this past Friday. By the time the weekend was completed, he had put himself among a small group of drivers to win four or more finals in a year. He set himself apart by doing it without the benefit of a favorite. McCarthy became the eighth driver with at least four Crowns in a year, joining record-holder David Miller (five in 2015), John Campbell, Yannick Gingras, Mike Lachance, Ron Pierce, Brian Sears, and Tim Tetrick. Campbell, Gingras, Pierce, and Sears accomplished the feat twice. But none sans chalk until McCarthy scored with 2-year-old filly trotter Ramona Hill (14-1), 2-year-old filly pacer Reflect With Me (27-1), pacing mare Caviart Ally (5-2), and 3-year-old male pacer Dancin Lou (5-1). “It’s surreal,” the 33-year-old McCarthy said. “It makes me feel pretty good about where I’m at right now. You want to give yourself a little pat on the back after hearing something like that. It’s a pretty nice little niche to be in.” McCarthy, a native of Australia who has raced regularly in North America
since 2007, has seen his purse earnings increase annually since the start of 2013, reaching a career-best $6.56 million this season. For his career, he has won $44 million in purses and nearly 2,400 races.
******
McCarthy wasn’t the only driver from Down Under to get his first Breeders Crown at Mohawk. New Zealand native Dexter Dunn, in his first full season of racing in North America, got two trophies. His first came with 2-year-old male trotter Amigo Volo for trainer Nifty Norman and the second with trotting mare Manchego for trainer Nancy Johansson. “I probably have to pinch myself a little; really, it’s hard to believe,” Dunn said in a winner’s circle interview. “Back in New Zealand, I followed the American races, like (Hambletonian) Day and Breeders Crown, and I’d be back in New Zealand watching them on TV and now I’m here. It’s pretty cool. It’s very exciting. “I’ve been extremely lucky with the support I’ve gotten since I’ve been here. I have a lot of people to thank. It’s been a great ride and I’m enjoying it thoroughly.”
