WELCOME STACEY WHITE

Dear Readers, We are well and truly into the current breedeing season, and things have been busy! All of the stallions at Woodlands Stud have settled back into their routine and are performing well in the shed. It was great to celebrate the outstanding performers of the 2018/19 season at the annual awards last month and we congratulate all of the winners from the night. As we approach Cup Week in New Zealand it is great to see some of the top class horses back out and racing. It’s setting up to be a fantastic week of racing next month and Woodlands Stud are proud to once again be sponsoring the New Zealand Free-For-All on Show Day. We hope you enjoy this edition of Woodlands Word, and we wish all of our breeders the best of luck with their foaling and serving in the coming weeks and months.

BETTER FLY WINNING ON DEBUT AT METHVEN ON SUNDAY - RACE IMAGES

// CHANGE AS GOOD AS A HOLIDAY FOR JOHN MCDERMOTT WOODLANDS WORD // 6

// MATT SMITH

Prebbleton trainer, owner and breeder John McDermott has a problem on his hands - but it’s a good one to have. McDermott disappeared for a six-week overseas holiday at the end of July, handing

over the then-unraced Better Fly (Bettor’s Delight) to Mitchell Kerr to look after. But judging by the way the 4-year-old mare zipped away to win on debut at Methven on Sunday, he might need some quality powers

“We always thought we’d breed to the best while we could. And of course, when the first foal was a filly by Bettor’s Delight, well it was never going to be sold because we thought we might only get one Bettor’s filly out of her.” After missing to Christian Cullen the following year, a Mach Three colt named Beauden was sold to Tony Herlihy before Jordy, a full Bettor’s Delight brother to Better Fly, arrived in December 2017. Jordy didn’t quite meet his $35,000 reserve at this year’s sales, but McDermott is quite happy with how that has panned out. “He was passed in at $30,00 and we kept him and I’m very pleased we have.” Flyover has since produced an Art Major filly (now a yearling) and has returned a positive test to Lazarus this week. Coming back to Better Fly, McDermott said she “took a lot of organising”. “Certainly, she wasn’t the easiest horse to break in and she was difficult to gait but every time she came in she improved,” he said.

“I think I’d have to go and steal her in the middle of the night to get her back,” McDermott said. “But he’s a good trainer doing a great job and at the moment I’m working seven horses on my own, so I’ve got more than enough to keep me occupied.” Better Fly is the first foal out of the 10-win mare Flyover, and is a breeding project for McDermott and his brother Maurice. Having collected 10 wins and more than $125,000 in winnings over six seasons of racing, it made sense to send Flyover to the all-conquering stallion.

Those memories would be slightly forgotten after her debut win. But this means there are now two horses McDermott might have to nab back through a midnight stealth mission after Refine (Highview Tommy) scored at Addington on August 22 under the care of Brad Mowbray while McDermott was overseas. “Hopefully there are more wins in store for her. He likes her too - she’s a nice type of mare by Highview Tommy,” he said. McDermott has been taken by the stock of Highview Tommy, who represents great value point for breeders, and his other paddocks tell you what he thinks of the Woodlands Stud stallions.

of persuasion to get Better Fly back off the Rangiora-based Kerr.

Curve (Courage Under Fire) produced a Sweet Lou foal earlier in the week with “four white feet and a big white blaze” while Beardsley (Christian Cullen) was also set to give birth to a Sweet Lou foal this week. Two American Ideal products are also in McDermott’s paddocks. Topaz, a filly out of 8-win Christian Cullen mare Supreme Gem, is heading to the yearling sales while a colt out of Supreme Gem’s mother Flying Sands, isn’t for sale. McDermott is taking a slight step back this breeding season and is likely to only breed from two mares as he juggles breeding and training. Not that McDermott minds being busy. “It keeps me out of the pub,” McDermott laughed.

WOODLANDS STUD’S NEWEST SPONSORED DRIVER , SHEREE TOMLINSON

// TOMLINSON JOINS STUD’S DRIVER RANKS “At Woodlands Stud we are proud to give back to the industry that gives so much to us and as big supporters of the female teal pant campaign for ovarian cancer and with the female driving ranks growing, we felt sponsoring a female driver was the right choice to make,” said Stacey White, Marketing & Sales Manager at Woodlands Stud. “Sheree is a talented young horse woman with a strong family background in the industry. She is passionate about the horses and carries all of the attributes we look for in one of our driving representatives,” said White. When Tomlinson was approached about the opportunity, she jumped at it. “It’s a great opportunity to be sponsored by Woodlands Stud, they play such a big part in our industry. I’m honoured to be a part of their team and hopefully I can bring home plenty of winners,” Tomlinson stated. Tomlinson still holds her Junior Drivers licence and finished second overall on the premiership tables last season. She represented New Zealand in the Australasian Young Driver Championship in Australia last December and was crowned the winner of the series, over some of the best young drivers from throughout Australasia. A season that will be tough to top, but one that Sheree is using to keep her motivated to keep improving this season.

“I have a few goals for myself this season, but the main one is to keep getting drives and winning races. I’m also looking forward to defending my title at the Australian Junior Driving Championship which is being held in New Zealand in December,” said Tomlinson. Coming from the Ford/Tomlinson trotting family, who have had success at an elite level, including Tomlinson steering home the family bred trotter Amaretto Sun to win the Group 1 Dominion Handicap, trotters have always been a big part of Tomlinsons’s love for harness racing. “I love driving both trotters and pacers, but trotters hold a big place in my heart as I was brought up around them. I truly believe that the trotters have been a big part of my driving success as they can often test you and learning to be patient and understand horses is a big asset,” said Tomlinson. Now that Tomlinson is a part of the Woodlands Stud team it makes sense that she would breed her first horse alongside her family this season. She has chosen the new trotting sire What The Hill and he will be mated with Arabess, the dam of star trotter Marcoola - a match made in heaven.

Sheree Tomlinson is the latest addition to the Woodlands Stud Sponsored Driving ranks. She joins Tony Herlihy and Josh Dickie, who are both long-term sponsored drivers of the stud. Dexter Dunn was also previously sponsored, but since his departure to the US it meant a spot had come available.

Stacey White from Woodlands Stud said “Woodlands Stud is very proud to be supporting the Australasian Young Drivers Championships this season. Harness Racing is an industry we are passionate about and one we want to see grow. We put a lot back into this industry as it gives so much to us and this series is one we jumped at the opportunity to support.” PEGASUS SPUR - TRISH DUNELL

“Pegasus Spur is one of our tried and true stallions. He has a terrific record on the track and is often underrated as a sire. He’s the sire of the fastest horse in Australasia over a mile, with Maori Time going 1.51.5 and of course the sire of our own Speeding Spur.” “We are at a time where we need to be encouraging the future generations to have a go at breeding in order to maintain our product and by giving a free service to one of the best young drivers in Australasia, we hope to introduce them to a different sector of the industry that they can be a part of alongside their driving.” Harness Racing NZ would like to once again thank our main sponsor Hanley Formula and also Woodlands Stud for putting up the winning prize.

AMERICAN IDEAL’S BIG BOYS SMASH RECORDS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE TASMAN American Ideal’s reputation as a sire continues unabashed, ‘down under’. At Melton on Saturday night his champion son Bling It On fabled return as a nine-year-old, added another chapter when he won the Group 1 Victoria Cup in World Record time. Blazing 1.51.5 for the 2240 metre journey, Bling It On recorded his sixth career Group 1. Congratulations to all involved in the stallion’s race track return. At Auckland, Triple Eight is a pacer ‘on the rise’ following his New Zealand national record victory at in Holmes DG. Overcoming his 30-metre handicap, the son of American Ideal paced the 2700 metre journey in 3.17.2. In doing so he shaved a crazy 2.4 seconds off the previous record, the Interdominion is now on his radar. Other good winners for American Ideal included Takara Truffle at Menangle, Mighty Flying Deal at Gloucester Park and Cruz was a Melton winner. Bettor’s Delight’s star daughter Alicorn, continued her dominant season as Canada’s best 2yo filly with victory in the CA $225,000 Ontario Sires Stakes at Woodbine. Pacing a 1.52 and change mile, the classy filly recorded career win number seven as a juvenile. Closer to home, Bettor’s Delight sired a quartet of winners at Addington, amongst those greeting the judge were Roll The Dice and Dr Susan, at Melton, Hurricane Harley was back in the winner’s circle and at Mildura, Smynanna Mickey continued on her winning way.

BLING IT ON, THE SON OF AMERICAN IDEAL WINNING THE VICTORIA CUP LAST WEEKEND - STUART MCCORMICK.

The “perfect horse” Bling It On put in a clinical, explosive performance to win a record-smashing Pryde’s EasiFeed Victoria Cup, capping a stunning comeback story.

Harness Racing New Zealand today released the nominations for the IRT ID19 and 25 Australian horses are among the 55 pacing nominations.

The 2017 A. G. Hunter Cup winner has barely been seen since that careerbest performance owing to a bad fall and subsequent injury, but though fresh off a 10-month “retirement” and only second up he showed he had lost none of his brilliance in rounding up the Group 1 field.

Victorian superstar San Carlo looks set for a monster campaign, which will is also expected take in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, and he’ll be right in the ID19 market mix following a superb first-up win in the Jet Roofing Kilmore Pacing Cup last Thursday night.

“He’s such a special horse,” said reinsman Luke McCarthy. “Everyone knows his story by now and for him to come back second up after having that long off and win a Victoria Cup is just a credit to the horse.

IRT Inter Dominion Australian Nominations - Pacers:

“He’s so sound and wants to do it, he’s a beautiful horse, open bridle, no head check, no boots, no tongue tie – he’s just a professional. The trip worked out beautifully tonight and lucky enough he was good enough to finish it off.” ***** A larger than expected contingent of Australian horses has nominated for the 2019 Inter Dominion in New Zealand.

Atomic Red (AUS), Audi Hare (AUS), Bling It On (AUS), Buster Brady (AUS), Can’t Refuse (AUS), Colt Thirty One (AUS), Conviction (AUS), Courtsinsession (AUS), Crime Writer (AUS), Cruz Bromac (AUS), Ellmers Image (AUS), Fame Assured (AUS), Franco Landry (AUS), Harjeet (AUS), Ignatius (AUS), Jack Farthing (AUS), Joes Star Of Mia (AUS), My Kiwi Mate (AUS), Our Uncle Sam (AUS), San Carlo (AUS), Somebeachshadow (AUS), Tennyson Bromac (AUS), The Bus (AUS), Wrappers Delight (AUS)

Dexter Dunn started in seven of the eight $225,000 Super Finals winning three of them and placing a third and a fourth also. ***** Down Under bred and formerly raced gelding Saying Grace wins at Harrahs Hoosier Park for trainer Jeff Cullipher and driver Sam Widger in the $20,000 Open Pace in a time of 1:49.2. It was back to back victory’s for the son of American Ideal who won the week prior in an impressive mile time of 1:48.4. Scoring back to back sub 1:50 mile rates, a great effort from the 6yo. While racing in New Zealand and Australia, Saying Grace was the winner of 13 races and just short of $160,000 in prize money. ***** Former Down Under pacer Border Control won at Pocono on Sunday. The

10yo gelding was sul in a time of 1:52.3 for trainer and driver Tom Jackson. The son of Bettors Delight still holds New Zealand’s record for the fastest ever mile paced. The record mile of 1:50.6 was paced in the 3yo Colts and Geldings Harness Jewels Emerald at Ashburton Raceway in 2013.
