WELCOME STACEY WHITE

Dear Readers, It’s hard to believe we are in August already and a new season is underway. At Woodlands Stud we are very much looking forward to what the 2019-20 season is going to bring. Last week we welcomed the first of our foals, meaning that the breeding season for us is well underway. The shuttle stallions are arriving on farm early next week and will be beginning their collections from September 3rd. It’s not too late to book your mares in so please feel free to contact me if you are wanting to send your mares to our stallions. We are very proud of the stallions we stand at the stud and we are very excited to see the progeny they produce this season. Make sure you send us photos of your foals by our sires so we can feature it in this newsletter. I hope you enjoy this edition of Woodlands Word.

// AMERICAN OWNER REWARDED FOR SUPPORT DOWN UNDER The growing relationship between Southern and Northern Hemisphere harness racing has started to become very apparent over the last couple of seasons. With great soils to raise young-stock on the American’s are starting to look into our marketplace to buy their racehorses to take back over to America to race in their big league.

You only have to look at recent results over there to see names like Shartin, Bit Of A Legend and even the likes of Lazarus, to see that our horses are now matching it with the best horses bred in the Northern Hemisphere. They are breaking records, winning elite races and winning over the hearts of the American’s.

“I had seen that Dr. Grierson had said he thought Sweet Lou would cross well with Bettor’s Delight mares, and that was exactly what I had also felt was going to be a golden cross.” He has stood true to his word and when the first crop by Sweet Lou went under the hammer as yearlings at the National Yearling Sales in Auckland last year, he sent Canterbury based trainer Cran Dalgety along to have a look at the sires progeny and it has all stemmed from there. “Currently we have three Sweet Lou colts by Bettor’s Delight mares, the 3 year old who just won named I’m a Gigolo, a now 2-year-old out of a sister to Adore Me named Sugar Me, and another 2-year-old we are naming Louthario out of a mare named Serena’s Delight who we bought at the sale in Australia earlier this year,” says Karr. “All of the horses are trained by Cran Dalgety. Cran is a big believer in buying horses that have been raised well, and that is one of the reasons we have tried to buy Lou yearlings from Woodlands Stud.”

Karr is a big name on the American Harness Racing Scene and also well known for owning shares in the up and coming sire Sweet Lou, meaning that with the sires first crops arriving down under he has taken a big interest in the Australasian market. “After we arranged to send Sweet Lou to stand at Woodlands Stud, I wanted to really show commitment to the horse and buy some of his babies,” said Karr.

This brought up Karr’s first New Zealand win, however with the time differences it meant he didn’t see the race live, but when he did watch the replay, he was very impressed. “I’m A Gigolo’s win was very exciting and created quite a bit of “buzz” in my harness racing circle. He raced in the middle of the night US Eastern time and I had no idea how he did, but when I woke up the first thing I did was watch the replay,” Karr told Woodlands Stud. “He got away very far back and as I was watching I was just hoping he would make a

WOODLANDS WORD // 7

What isn’t all that common however, is for American’s to purchase our stock and leave them here to race. In Larry Karr’s case though, this is exactly what he is doing.

I’m A Gigolo was Karr’s first purchase, a big upstanding colt bred by Woodlands Stud who made $37,000 in the ring. He qualified at Ashburton back in January and he won his first start a couple of weeks ago, and it was an impressive one at that.

good late run, but then he made a dramatic, sweeping move to circle the entire field and was able to sustain it and draw away in the stretch. “My horses have won a lot of major stakes races, but there was something about I’m A Gigolo’s win that was very exciting.” His other two purchases have just turned 2 and are progressing well with Cran. It seems that the three of them will be staying for the foreseeable future to have their chance on the track here. “If the horses seem like they can do well in the US, when the time is right, I would expect that at some point we would bring them here. But I am in no hurry to do so,” says Karr. In terms of Sweet Lou and his success as a first season sire, it is something the shareholders could never have dreamed of for him. “We are very proud of Sweet Lou. We own his daughter Warrawee Ubeaut in America, who is the fastest 2-year-old ever regardless of sex, and this year co-own a very nice 2-year-old filly named Sweet Ace who has been driven so far by Dexter Dunn,” said Karr. “I’ve also been following how Sweet Lou has been doing Down Under and have been very impressed by Sweet On Me in New Zealand, and Double Expresso in Australia. “Based on the strength of his first crop, Sweet Lou was bred to an exceptional group of mares this year in the US, and I have high hopes his progeny will continue to excel over the coming years,” Karr said. What Karr is doing is a strong commitment to the Australasian harness racing industry and one that hasn’t gone unnoticed.

THE FIRST FOAL OF THE SEASON - A LOVELY FILLY BY DOWNBYTHESEASIDE

// WELCOME TO THE WORLD The new breeding season is underway at Woodlands Stud, with our first foal being born late last week. It is an exciting season with the first crops of our new sires Downbytheseaside and What The Hill arriving! Woodlands Stud welcomed their first foal for the 2019-20 breeding season on August 9th, just days into the new season. It is thought to be the first standardbred foal born in New Zealand this season and better yet, the first foal in Australasia by Downbytheseaside, Woodlands Stud’s newest pacing sire. The foal born is a filly out of the Falcon Seelster mare, Tania Tandias who is the dam of horses such as Lincoln Road and Tommy Lincoln. She is a terrific type, upright, strong and has plenty of leg. Woodland Stud co-director Andrew Grierson has been designing a range of reproductive light masks for broodmares both foaling and getting in foal and Studmaster Tony Grayling thinks that this was part of the reason for such an early foal.

The Dragon. He is currently being advertised for the upcoming breeding season at the special price of $4,800 + GST in New Zealand and $5,280 inc GST in Australia. Since this foal was born there have been another two foals born, both by champion sire Bettor’s Delight. Woodlands Stud are expecting to have over 140 mares foal on the farm throughout the season and are also excited about the arrival of the first foals by their new trotting sire What The Hill. The shuttle stallions are due to finish quarantine and arrive on the farm on Monday ahead of their first collect day on September 3rd.

Downbytheseaside stood his first season ‘down under’ last year and served a good number of quality mares both in New Zealand and Australia. He is a champion son of the late Somebeachsomewhere , he made $2.1 million on the track and was the 3YO of his Year in 2017, defeating top horses such as Huntsville and Fear

WOODLANDS WORD // 11

“She wasn’t due to foal for another seven days, but she is strong and healthy. The mare had a light mask on which promotes early foaling, so it seems to have done it’s job well on this one,” Grayling said.

RECORD WIN BY SPEEDING SPUR JUSTIFIES US CAMPAIGN WOODLANDS WORD // 12

It took only three starts for Speeding Spur to justify one of the toughest decisions of Andrew Grierson’s life. And his stunning track record win at Tioga Downs in the United States yesterday (NZ time) could well earn him an invite into one of the world’s richest trots. The veteran Kiwi trotted a 1:52.8 mile to set a new track record for an aged trotter, with the stake for the US$148,000 ($229,000) open trot meaning Speeding Spur’s US career is as good as paid for. But for managing owner Grierson, the win meant so much more than that. As well as being one of New Zealand’s best known equine veterinarians, Grierson is one of the principals of powerhouse harness breeding operation Woodlands Stud, and it is through that role, he came to be the man in charge of the career of Speeding Spur. New Zealand’s reigning trotter of the year, Speeding Spur won two Group 1 races last season for long-time trainers John and Josh Dickie but Grierson made the controversial decision to send him to the US to give him his chance against the world’s best and get a fast mile time to embellish his stallion career. “I know I got some flak from some people at the time who thought he should have stayed here for the Inter Dominions but I thought he deserved his chance up there,” said Grierson.

RIGHT: SPEEDING SPUR PRIOR TO HIS RACE (PHOTO: SHELLY GRIECO - STRAPPER)

“It wasn’t about the money, it was about him getting his chance and it is a hard business standing stallions and a good mile time and some big wins up there will help him get a real chance at stud down here. “So this is the first step towards that. We had great trainers down here in John and Josh and he is getting wonderful care up there from Linda Toscano, so we are thrilled with how it has all panned out. “Linda is adamant he can go a lot faster and maybe even get down to sub-1:50 for the mile and that would really help his stud career.” Speeding Spur’s win, admittedly against not the greatest open class field of the season as many of the glamour trotting mares were in a different race on the programme, opens plenty of doors. He was already being suggested as the Down Under invite to the US$1m Yonkers Invitational in October while several of the other major trots in North America are on his radar. “We will let him tell us where the limit is for him and how competitive he can be at the highest level,” says Grierson. “He was going to stay up there just for this season, but if he keeps improving, he could even spend next season up there.”

The win capped a great weekend for Kiwis in US harness racing as Dexter Dunn drove one of the richest winners of his career when Bettor’s Wish won the US$400,000 Carl Milstean Memorial at Northfield Park. It was Dunn’s first night driving at Northfield Park and continues his dream season in the US, with Bettor’s Wish trained by another Kiwi ex-pat, Chris Ryder.

NEWS BETTOR’S WISH CONTINUES STELLAR NORTH AMERICAN 3YO SEASON Top flight pacer Bettor’s Wish ranks amongst North American’s best 3yo pacers and he added to his burgeoning reputation when he dealt to his foes in the $400,000 Carl Milstein Memorial at Northfield Park. With Dexter Dunn in the bike, the son of Bettor’s Delight strolled to victory by 3 ½ lengths, posting a 1.50.3-mile rate. Bettor’s Wish is now harness racings latest millionaire with this, his eleventh career win! The Breeders Crown is under way in Victoria and Bettor’s Delight’s progeny were seen to advantage. Hurricane Harley and Demon Delight won heats of the 3yo lads division, Two Times Bettor was an impressive 3yo fillies heat winner and Jemstone led all the way to win a 2yo fillies heat. American Ideal cut a sway through the Newcastle meeting with a treble, the winners included Regal Rock and Glenn Ford, at Auckland he sired a double when Flying Steps and debut winner Henry Hu greeted the judge, Illegal Immigrant won at Launceston and American Tour got the cash at Mildura. Do you know American Ideal is still the leading 2yo sire in North America this season as we approach mid-August!

The decision to send ‘gun’ trotter Speeding Spur to show case his skills in North America has borne fruit with victory in the USD $148,000 Crawford trot at Tioga Downs. The son of Pegasus Spur trotted a career best and Aged male record for Tioga Downs when he scooted round in 1.52.4! A big shout out to hall of fame trainer Linda Toscano and driver Brian Sears who steered ‘Dell Boy’ to his USA win.

GREG SUGARS AND LARAJAY MACRAY WITH MARK HUGHES AND ANDREW GRIERSON FROM WOODLANDS STUD AFTER THEY WON THE FIRST HEAT OF THE BREEDERS CROWN 3YO FILLIES CATEGORY.

This weekend sees the SemiFinals at Bendigo for this seasons Australasian Breeders Crown. Woodlands Stud are proud to be sponsoring three of the Breeders Crown categories - 3YO fillies, 2YO Colt & Geldings and 4YO Trotting Mares and we are looking forward to the finals at Melton next Friday night. Good luck to all of the runners and their connections for the next eight days! ***** Soho Tribeca has returned to Perth to try and resurrect his career. He is back in the barn of Kim Prentice, who did all of the early work with the horse. The son of American Ideal won a Golden Nugget and Vicbred 4YO final at Group 1 level for Prentice, but their biggest win together came in the 2018 Group 1 WA Pacing Cup. A year earlier Soho Tribeca ran second in the Fremantle Cup and third in the WA Cup. Prentice said the plan was to have Soho Tribeca back racing by early December with a view to chasing

the Fremantle and WA Cups again at Gloucester Park in January. ***** The decision has been finalised that superstar pacer Tiger Tara will chase NZ Cup glory again this season, Trainer Kevin Pizzuto has confimred that the NZ Cup was again his major target. Pizzuto has the option of heading to Melton for the $200,000 Group 1 Victoria Cup on October 12 which he won last year, but he said it’s more likely he would go across to NZ earlier than last year and have his final lead-up race over there. There is also a possibilty that he will stay over in new Zealand for the Inter-Dominions a few weeks after the cup.

BETTOR’S WISH - HARNESS RACING’S LATEST MILLIONAIRE

Dexter Dunn hails from Down Under in New Zealand and traveled to the United States less than a year ago. He had never been to MGM Northfield Park, but arrived on Saturday (August 10) full of confidence to drive race favorite Bettor’s Wish in the $400,000 Carl Milstein Memorial. He went to the gate on aboard the talented son of Bettor’s Delight, Bettor’s Wish.

Dunn urged Bettor’s Wish in the third quarter and he responded, posting times of 1:24.1 and 1:50.3. The colt pulled away by 3 ½-lengths from his closest competitor. Saturday’s victory is the 11th score for Bettor’s Wish. The win makes the Chris Ryder trainee harness racing’s newest millionaire, pushing his earnings to $1,096,600.

SHARTIN - FASTEST PACING MARE OF ALL TIME

Don’t try telling Grant Crabbe that New Zealand harness horses aren’t the equal of the best in the world. Because he is on a one-man crusade to prove they are. And when it comes to his world champion mare Shartin, Crabbe is winning the war.

The mare Crabbe bred out of his Canterbury base became the fastest pacing mare of all time when she blasted around The Meadowlands in 1:46.8 recently, winning so easily it is realistic to think she could have

threatened the all-comers world mark of 1:46 had she been pushed or asked. That continued a stunning last 18 months for Shartin and coming on top of Lazarus pacing close to 1:46 last year, New Zealand horses are running world class times in an industry where times are a far more valued than in thoroughbred racing. Shartin is by New Zealand pacer Tintin In America, who was a speed freak when trained by Geoff Small

LATHER UP TIES ALL-AGE RECORD AT HOOSIER PARK

Just when one thought they had seen it all, a first quarter in :24.4, a favorite who looked hopelessly beaten in the stretch came a Phoenix out of the ashes as Lather Up showed what the heart of a champion can do even when a victory seemed out of the question. With a final time of 1:47.2, Lather Up turned in a stunning performance to

capture the 26th edition of the $330,000 Dan Patch Stakes at Harrah’s Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Friday, August 9. After equaling the World Record with a 1:46 performance two starts ago, Lather Up continued his record-setting trend with a 1:47.2 final time to equal the overall track record at Harrah’s Hoosier Park and Dan Patch Stakes record set by Sweet Lou in 2014.
