WINTER/SPRING 2018

A letter from the President, On behalf of the Board of Park Commissioners and staff, we extend our sincerest appreciation to all residents for their continuous support of Woodridge Park District parks, facilities, programs and services. The Board and staff continue to work hard to enhance and expand opportunities for residents to improve their quality of life through parks and recreation. The development of the Athletic Recreation Center (ARC) is one example of the District’s efforts to provide Woodridge residents of all ages and abilities, year-round healthy living opportunities through fitness, athletics, youth after-school programs, recreational, and social service programs. The ARC Multi Activity Court (MAC) gymnasium addition currently under construction is scheduled to be completed in late winter/early spring. This space, as designed as part of the original plans, was postponed during initial construction due to the delay in receiving a $2.5MM Park and Recreation Facility Construction (PARC) grant. The MAC gym will provide opportunities to further expand new programs and enhance existing program opportunities. Though the ARC development is a major achievement, the Park District continues to take a birds-eye-view approach to continually improve your Park District by striving to achieve our mission statement, “To Enhance One’s Quality of Life by Providing Superior Parks, Facilities, and Recreational Services in a Fiscally Responsible and Environmentally Sustainable Manner, in Partnership with the Community.” To that effort, the Park District recently completed the following capital improvement projects: Village Greens Golf Course upgraded clubhouse interior and resurfaced parking lot; Hawthorne Hill & Boundary Hill Woods Woodland invasive plant material removal project to improve access to natural areas and expand future trail opportunities; Lake Harriet fishing pier; 63rd Street Park renovated baseball field; Sipley School play equipment replacement; Cypress Cove filtration pumps/motors replacement and bathhouse floor resurfacing; New Ide’s Legacy Park in the Timbers Edge subdivision; and reinvestment in various Capital Replacement Projects ($500k per year). Plans are being finalized for the following future capital projects and planning efforts to include but are not limited to: 83rd Street Park (adjacent to Sipley School) improvement project (summer/fall 2018); Timbers Edge subdivision new neighborhood park (planning 2018); Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park pool PVC liner installation project (spring 2018); and Triangle Park storm water improvement project (2018-2020). Visit the “What’s New” page on the District’s website (www.woodridgeparks.org) for a status of highlighted capital projects. Striving for excellence doesn’t stop with just capital improvements. The Recreation Department is preparing to launch a new registration system and online registration website in time for the registration of 2018 winter/spring programs. More information can be found on the back cover. The Maintenance Department is updating its Annual Comprehensive Park Inspection Task Inventory which identifies maintenance tasks at each park and facility location to proactively address any issues in order to provide safe, clean and attractive parks and facilities. One of the key phrases in our Mission Statement is “….in Partnership with the Community.” Being responsive to our residents is a strategic goal and therefore we strive to gather feedback from all residents whether that’s through program surveys, neighborhood planning committees, advisory focus groups, stakeholder meetings, Village Town Meeting, email correspondence, needs assessment surveys, customer service relations, etc. To that end, the Park District will release in mid-November, a Community Recreation Survey to over 5,000 households to gather feedback from residents regarding their households satisfaction of Woodridge parks, facilities, programs and services as well as identify future needs. The statistically valid survey results will be used in conjunction with the other feedback methods to incorporate into a new five-year Strategic Master Plan with a focus on Recreation Services and Capital Improvements. Keep in mind, you never have to wait to provide your feedback. If you ever have a concern, suggestion or idea you can contact the Executive Director or staff by phone or email (see website for staff listing), send the Board an email at BoardofCommissioners@woodridgeparks.org, or attend a board meeting held on the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Community Center. Remember to Take Time for FUN!!! Sincerely,

AARP Driver Safety Course Why take a driver safety course? Because driving has changed since you first got your license. Cars have changed, so have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel on every day. Some drivers age 50+ have never looked back since they got their first driver’s licenses, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. You must attend both days to receive certificate. You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course. Consult with your agent for details. Participants will pay instructor on day of class.

Canasta Canasta is a card game of the rummy family of games believed to be a variant of 500 Rum. It is most commonly played by four in two partnerships with two standard decks of cards. Players attempt to make melds of seven cards of the same rank and “go out” by playing all cards in their hand.

Corec Pee Wee Soccer League

You’ll learn all about these fascinating creatures in this fun, hands-on class. First, you’ll listen to a book about them, see and touch a real starfish, work on a starfish art project, do some counting or graphing, and even make a starfish-themed snack that you can eat or take home with you. The Woodridge Park District Pee Wee Youth Soccer Program is a Corec program that places emphasis on skill development, fundamentals, sportsmanship, and fun. Everyone is guaranteed a chance to play more than a half of each game. The number of teams and sizes are set by registration. Teams will be set one week prior to the coaches meeting in March. Players are not necessarily on the same team each season. If your child is in Kindergarten in the fall 2017/spring 2018, your child should sign up for the WSA Micro I Division, not this program. Participants need to provide their own cleats, shin guards and socks to cover the shin guards. Format 4x4 on 30x20 yard field with small goals. The first two weeks are for practice. Teams meet no more than twice a week. Players are contacted by coaches after they have been assigned to a team. Volunteer coaches are needed. Please indicate you are willing to coach when you register your child. All participants must preregister, including those whose parents will volunteer coach. Register by the grade your child entered in fall 2017.

Girls Softball Southwest Suburban (SWS) League The SWS originated from the fact that while many communities offer in-house programs through all age levels, participation at the older levels might often be too low to make an in-house-program viable. By combining teams from other communities, participants are able to play a full schedule. The Southwest Suburban league plays an 18-20 game schedule and games are usually split home and away. Some of the other communities include Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Naperville, Plainfield and Romeoville. We will be offering 14U teams. Those that have played in the SWS previously will receive priority over those that are new to the program if they register by Monday, February 5. Age is as of January 1, 2018. The Woodridge Park District honored Stu Vanorny as the 2017 Coach of the Year for his commitment to coaching a variety of youth sports in Woodridge. Stu began coaching for the Park District

in 2012 as an in-house soccer coach for the Woodridge Soccer Association. He later committed to coaching his son’s Woodridge Storm travel soccer team, which he has coached for the last three years. To add to his coaching credentials, Stu also became a baseball coach for the Woodridge Athletic Association and a

basketball and flag football coach for Park District leagues this year. Growing up, Stu participated in sports with coaches who he looked up to and who also made a positive impact on his life. That’s why he became a coach himself; to make a positive impact on his children’s and others’ lives.

I try to stress to the kids that a mistake is just an opportunity to improve. “I try to stress to the kids that a mistake is just an opportunity to improve,” said Stu. “If you focus on the players’ individual growth, everything else follows. All of the wins and losses eventually fade away, but knowing that each player was out there giving it his or her all is what it’s all about to me.”

Special recognition also goes to Woodridge Park District volunteer coaches Evette Abarca, Mike Ermitage, Joe Schrimpl, Dave Zurawski, Jon Rakers, Vladen Stojanovic, Ben Lauzon, Richard Davey, Chris Hammer and Gary Hunter, who also were nominated for the award.

Please refrain from feeding the birds at Lake Carleton and Lake Harriet along with other lakes in the area. The waterfowl have become used to handouts and no longer migrate south in the winter. The once wild birds have become tame and have lost their fear of cars and people, which can lead to traffic problems and possible injury. With the growing populations of waterfowl in small concentrated areas, the competition for food is high. The less nutritious handouts and harsh weather increase their susceptibility to life threatening diseases. We ask that you please do not feed the waterfowl. Thank you for your support. Satisfaction Guaranteed and Refund Procedure

Behavior Policy

The Woodridge Park District offers a “Satisfaction Guaranteed” Policy for all of our recreation programs! (Trips, summer day camps, pool passes and one-day events excluded). We are committed to giving the residents of Woodridge quality programs at reasonable prices, and we are prepared to stand behind the programs we offer. If you are not completely satisfied with the program after attending two classes, stop by the Community Center before the third meeting to fill out an “unsatisfied” refund form. We will invite you to repeat a class at no charge, receive a credit toward another program in the session, or receive a full refund (minus $5 administrative charge). No refund will be granted after the third meeting of the program or after 50% of the classes have been held (whichever is earlier) with the exception of a written medical excuse prior to completion of the program. A $5 administrative charge will be deducted from the amount of refund for each program, including refunds for medical reasons. Medical excuses will result in a pro-rated refund based upon the number of classes held prior to the date listed on the physician’s excuse. No refunds will be given for a trip unless there is a replacement participant or the trip is cancelled. The Park District does reserve the right to cancel a program if the enrollment is not sufficient to justify sponsorship of the activity. Participants will receive a phone call and the option of a refund or leaving the balance on their account. We ask for your feedback to help us serve our residents to the best of our ability and to achieve our goal to make this the most cooperative, public accessible park district in the state. Photography/Videotaping Policy The Woodridge Park District photographs and videotapes participants in its programs, special events or facilities to publicize recreational opportunities. We do not use any identification in our brochures. By registering for a program, participants and parents/ guardians of participants consent to being photographed and videotaped. These photographs and videotapes will be used to promote the Park District through press releases, brochures, the web site and other promotional materials. Please tell the instructor and photographer if you do not want to be photographed.

Participants/parents/guardians/spectators shall exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. The Park District developed the following guidelines to help make programs safe and enjoyable for all participants. The Park District may develop additional rules for particular programs and athletic leagues as deemed necessary by staff. Participants/parents/guardians/spectators shall: 1. Show respect to all participants, staff, referees, volunteers and spectators; and take direction from staff. 2. Refrain from using abusive or foul language. 3. Refrain from threatening or causing bodily harm to self, other participants, spectators, referees and staff. 4. Respect all equipment, supplies, and facilities. 5. Not possess any weapons Staff will use a positive approach regarding discipline. Staff will periodically review rules with participants during the program session. If inappropriate behavior occurs, prompt resolution will be sought, specific to each individual’s situation. The Agency reserves the right to dismiss a participant from a program or a parent/guardian/spectator from a program area whose behavior is inappropriate or endangers the safety of himself/herself or others. Special Note To Parents The Woodridge Park District provides a safe and stimulating environment for your child’s growth, please help us maintain our high-quality programs. • Safety: Please drop off and pick up your child at the classroom door. • Age: To enroll in a class, a child must have attained the proper age of the desired class by the first class session. • Proof of Age: Proof of age in the form of a birth certificate may be required. If a child is not the appropriate age for a class, he/she will be dropped from the program. • Parent & Child Classes: Siblings of the enrolled children may not attend class. Rotary Club of Woodridge Program Assistance Plan The Rotary Club of Woodridge acknowledges the need for residents with an economic hardship to enrich their lives through participation in recreation programs. To ensure equal access to recreation programs throughout the Woodridge Park District, the Rotary Club of Woodridge will provide funding assistance/scholarships for District residents in financial need subject to available and fiscal year appropriations. Assistance may be in the form of a payment plans whereby the cost of the program will be spread over a period of time to allow the family/individual to afford the program as determined by the District or may be a partial scholarship whereby the cost of the program will be reduced according to the guidelines and the difference reimbursed by the Rotary Club. Applications are available at the Woodridge Park District Community Center. Applications will be considered for approval within 5 working days of submission and are completely confidential. Residents using the Program Assistance Plan will follow normal registration procedures. For more information, please go to the Community Center and pick up an application. Participants must reside within the boundaries of the Woodridge Park District to be eligible.
