T
hanks to two generous families, a voluntary conservation agreement now protects 103 acres in the popular hiking, biking, and fishing area of Colorado Gulch, just south of Hailey’s city limits. The generous donation made by the landowners, Grant, Sheri, and Cat Stevens, and Jeff Pfaeffle and his family, permanently protects approximately ¾ mile of riverfront on the west side of the Big Wood River accross from the City of Hailey’s Heagle Park. Located near the Draper Wood River Preserve, this conservation agreement adds
to a growing corridor of protected land along the Big Wood River in and near Hailey and includes healthy riparian areas along the River and a native cottonwood forest. The upland areas are part of a large migration corridor for mule deer and provide winter habitat for elk. Two years ago, Wood River Land Trust’s Healthy Waters Healthy Future project identified the area near Colorado Gulch as a high priority for protection of the River and its fish. lans for the remodel of our staff housing next door on Second Avenue are nearly complete, and we will soon go to the City of Hailey for design review. Eddy Svidgal Architects AIA created an exterior design for us that the Hailey Historic Preservation Committee would call “Hailey Historic”—one that is in keeping with this old Hailey neighborhood.

his newsletter marks the end of my term as President of Wood River Land Trust’s Board of Directors. I want to thank my fellow Directors and our terrific staff for their commitment to Wood River Land Trust’s mission. We have raised the amount of protected lands to approximately 10,000 acres of unique open space and wildlife habitat. Often, we are protecting traditional farm and ranchland from development pressure or riverfront lands for public access. While our “bread and butter” activity is to enter into conservation agreements with private landowners, we are increasingly working on complex, multi-year projects involving local, state, and federal agencies. Examples include the Draper Wood River Preserve and our upcoming Croy Creek Restoration Project. Continued on page 10

The plans call for the front room to be extended on the east side, providing an opportunity to use the full basement. That will give us a total of 3 bedrooms for staff, to provide housing for interns year-round. We are researching green building options and will work with the Building Material Thrift Store to use recycled materials. Landscaping will be drought tolerant to minimize water usage. If you can donate materials, time, or services to this effort, we would love to hear from you. Our thanks to Eddy Svidgal and crew for donating their time and creative efforts to this project. atives of the southeast, Trent and his wife, Cecile, moved to the Wood River Valley in 1994. After spending his first summer in Idaho working at Silver Creek Outfitters, Trent took a position with the Idaho Nature Conservancy (TNC) that fall where he spent the next 8 years involved with conservation real estate activities around the state. Trent also served as TNC’s field representative for central Idaho where he worked with local communities and landowners to preserve working ranchlands and resolve natural resource conflicts. With these experiences as background, Trent left TNC in 2003 and joined Hall and Hall Ranch Brokers, a rural property brokerage firm founded in 1946 and based in Billings, Montana. Hall and Hall emphasizes preserving the Western landscape and working with conservation-minded buyers. Trent’s business takes him across a wide territory and involves travel to British Columbia and South America’s Patagonia region. Continued on page 10
eri is a Wood River Valley native and is happy to be home after living away for 10 years. Having a degree in Marine Biology, many people ask what she is doing in Idaho. She has lived all over the country and has had studied several marine ecosystems, including Caribbean coral reefs and West Coast rocky banks. She has had the unique opportunities of diving 300 feet underwater in a submersible and collecting deep-sea fish from commercial fishing boats for her master’s degree. After a few years working as a fishery biologist at sea she missed the Rocky Mountains and being on land. Last summer, Keri worked as the Silver Creek Preserve Assistant Manager and spent most of her time doing hands-on land management,
monitoring projects, and interacting with visitors. She learned a great deal about the Silver Creek and Big Wood River watershed and its ecology. After this experience, she decided to continue working in land conservation. Keri is excited to once again have the outdoor opportunities that this Valley offers. Her primary interests include hiking, biking, camping, and snowboarding. She is also part of the ballroom dance community in the Valley, and you can sometimes find her serving fries at the Wicked Spud. An aspiring world traveler, she has just returned from six weeks of hiking and working on farms in New Zealand. We are excited to have Keri on board to help us care for our protected lands.

Protect the River and Save on Water Costs this Summer!
T
his summer, we are continuing our Trout Friendly Lawn program to promote yard care practices that minimize adverse effects on our water and fish. Choices about backyard plantings, lawn irrigation, and fertilizers all affect the health of the aquifer and the Big Wood River. During our hot desert summers, heavy lawn irrigation impacts the amount of water in the river. Chemicals and fertilizers can also enter the aquifer and have negative effects on fish. Changing your lawn care practices to keep our River healthy, protect fish, and keep our water clean will make your yard “greener” whether you have a lawn, a xeriscape yard, or something in between. If your water is metered, a Trout Friendly Lawn can save you money on your water bill, but in any yard it can result in better looking plants and lower long-term costs to maintain your plantings. Trout Friendly steps include: n

Over the years Wood River Land Trust has received donations from many different sources and stemming from many different motivations—memorial tributes, gifts in lieu of birthday presents, and inclusion in estate plans. One gift that truly gave us pause this past year was a request by Alexis Shapiro that a portion of her Bat Mitzah gifts be directed to Wood River Land Trust. We were struck by Alexis’ generosity and thoughtfulness: it is young, community-minded philanthropists like her who will carry on the good work of protecting the Wood River Valley’s land, water, and wildlife long after we are gone. floodplain by providing open areas along the River so it can overflow its banks during spring runoff to recharge the aquifer and pull cottonwoods and shrubs into the River to create fish habitat. “This area is an important link in the future of the fishery,” says Kathryn Goldman, Wood River Land Trust Project Coordinator. “Protecting this open, undeveloped floodplain area contributes greatly to the long-term health of the River.” The Stevens cite their love of the Wood River Valley, and in particular the Big Wood River and local wildlife, as their motivation for donating this conservation agreement. “We want to preserve the beauty of the Big Wood and Colorado Gulch for everyone in the community and to see the area protected for animals, remain undeveloped, and provide a place for fishing, hiking, and reflecting,” says Dr. Stevens. Adjacent to Bureau of Land Management and existing Wood River Land Trust land, the Colorado Gulch Conservation Agreement also guarantees the public’s continued access to the Big Wood River and public lands, which local residents use for an array of recreational activities including hiking, fishing, bird watching, and mountain biking.

Additionally, Wood River Land Trust reaches out to the community through activities such as the Heart of the Valley Contest, the Trout Friendly Lawn program, and the Community Picnic at Howard Preserve. Whether you are a full-time resident or a second homeowner, you have a significant financial and emotional investment in the Wood River Valley. Wood River Land Trust is working hard to ensure it remains a special place where change is measured and outdoor resources are protected. Our incoming president, Ed Cutter, and his team have my best wishes for their efforts to build on our recent progress. And I want to thank you for your support. We couldn’t succeed without you.

Familiar with Wood River Land Trust since his days at TNC, Trent became a Land Trust Director in 2007. “Wood River Land Trust’s success in recent years and the leadership role it has taken in preserving open space, agricultural lands, and wildlife habitat in Blaine County motivated me to join the Board when the invitation was offered,” says Trent. “I was also strongly influenced by the Land Trust’s unwavering commitment to protect the Big Wood River, which I feel is the defining feature of the Wood River Valley.” Trent spent 4 years on the Hailey Planning & Zoning Commission addressing local land use and development issues. Trent is a dedicated fly fisherman and upland bird hunter and spends much of his free time prospecting the streams of central Idaho for wild trout and climbing the hills of eastern Blaine County for grouse and chukar. Trent and Cecile have 2 children, Parker (10) and Airey (5).

ur success this past year—nearly doubling the number of acres we have protected in 2007 and beginning our 14th year protecting land, water, and wildlife habitat in the Wood River Valley—led us to create our first-ever annual report.
