IIEE-IBC JOINED COASTAL CLEAN-UP
Marine debris is a serious and worsening problem in marine and coastal environments worldwide. Every year about 7 billion tonnes of rubbish makes it way into the sea. Eighty percent of marine debris comes from land via our storm water system, rivers and streams and is then transported out to sea. Marine debris causes harm to underwater ecosystems and wildlife in many ways. Hence, the government officials of Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte initiated a community outreach program – the Coastal Clean-Up with a theme “I LOVE THE OCEAN. Our seas need us. It’s time to get involved!” held May 30, 2015. The said program is chaired by Hon. Sittie Djam Macarambon, a town councilor and an IIEEIBC BOD. The activity is supported by USAID, YSEAU, local government agencies, and other NGOs. The IIEE-IBC affiliated in this activity. This is the organization’s way of demonstrating social responsibility (CSR) within the community. It also helps build team spirit among the members of the community. The IIEE-IBC officers, Engr. Nelson D. Enriquez, Engr. Rolando Cuizon, Mr. Roel Eballe, Engr. Mardeliez T. Cuajotor, and JIIEE members (students from St. Peter’s College-Iligan and Lyceum of Iligan Foundation) joined in this activity. They helped in removing the trash and debris from the beach and waterways that caused water pollution. The IIEE-IBC salutes to the statement shared by Hon. Sittie Djam Macarambon. She said, “we set out to sustain and protect our coastlines: this is at the core of everything we do. We love our coasts and we work with our sleeves rolled up to keep them beautiful.” By taking part in this coastal clean-up, the IIEE-IBC organization is leaving a great example to others on how to reduce marine debris in the seas and allowing wildlife to remain safe from pollution.
