Foreword This Yearbook showcases the talent and potential of the 2013 UEA MBA cohort. There is a wealth of experience and evidence of achievement in these pages and these individuals will add significant value to any organisation they choose to work with as they pursue their careers after graduation.

“We are proud of our 2013 cohort. They have worked hard over an intensive study period and deserve the success which must surely follow.”

They have worked hard to earn a high-quality MBA. UEA is one the UK’s top Universities, as evidenced by our performance in a variety of league tables, and our MBA is fully accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). This international standard places our degree amongst the world’s best. A rigorous programme of study covering all of the fundamental elements of strategic management is complemented by practical consultancy projects where students worked with client organisations and make a real impact on the business. In 2013, students worked with companies that included Tesco, Marsh, GlaxoSmithKline, Kodak and KLM. The skills and experience they develop during these projects are within a framework of the professional standards set by the Institute of Consulting and the Chartered Management Institute and result in the students also graduating with a Level 7 Diploma in Professional Consulting. An MBA graduate will have a deep knowledge and understanding of a range of business models, theories and frameworks. UEA’s teaching methods, focus on cohort experience and commitment to the application of this resource through real consultancy work encourages students to reflect upon the practical use of MBA-level thinking in a variety of environments. The 2013 cohort studied with passion and energy. I recommend these people to you. Julian Campbell MBA Programme Director mbateam@uea.ac.uk +44 (0)1603 591753

MBA recruitment Our aim is to support you to find the best talent for your organisation from our MBA cohort. If you would like to discuss your recruitment needs further, please contact our MBA team who can provide information and advice about the services we offer. The MBA e-Yearbook Recruiters can contact students in the MBA e-Yearbook directly via their email addresses. If you have any difficulties making contact, please email our MBA team who have access to student contact details and will be pleased to assist you.

Job posting facility Vacancies can be placed directly with the Business School by emailing the MBA team. Your vacancy will be promoted to all MBA students and can also be advertised across the wider UEA community at your request.

Workshops and presentations We welcome employers on campus to deliver skills workshops and presentations to our students. Workshops and presentations are an excellent way to meet and communicate with students formally and informally, promote your own organisation and vacancies, and give the students an insight into the skills and abilities necessary for success.

On-campus interviewing We offer facilities for interviewing MBA students on campus, a short journey from the centre of Norwich.

Opportunities for working with us Norwich Business School offers organisations and companies different opportunities for working with our MBA students. These are through consultancy projects and Inside Business. Consultancy projects By working with us on a consultancy project, you have the opportunity to host a small group of motivated students who will tackle a business issue that is important to you and your organisation. MBA students undertake two consultancy projects during the year. Inside Business Inside Business is a seminar series featuring successful business people drawn primarily from the alumni of UEA, talking about contemporary issues in their businesses, their careers and working in their industry.

If you are interested in finding out more about our Consultancy projects or Inside Business, contact: Julian Campbell MBA Programme Director Julian.Campbell@uea.ac.uk +44 (0)1603 591999

“The best decision I made in my life. It is amazing how much difference 12 months makes in one’s life. A year ago, I was a confused and overworked manager who relied heavily on gut instinct. Now, I am a confident leader with good business and networking skills and looking forward to the various challenges my life has got to offer. Sujit Narayanan, Full-Time MBA, 2013

“The consultancy projects brought the whole experience together for me. MBA consultancy projects at Norwich Business School: How we teach our students to apply knowledge MBA consultancy projects at Norwich Business School are live and challenging projects. They are not simply placements where a student works full-time in an organisation for a small period of time. Consultancy projects take place over a period of about twelve weeks usually with groups of students acting as consultancy teams to address real problems and issues in organisations. All of this activity is undertaken whilst, at the same time, attending the taught units typical of an MBA programme. By consulting over a longer time period than many other MBA programmes, the students have an opportunity to undertake an unusually thorough consultancy. Our approach allows them to initiate discussion with a wider range of people than in a short intensive consultancy where access to the relevant people may not be possible within the timeframe. Furthermore the students have time to reflect on their learning as the project progresses and, indeed, part of their assessment is a reflection on the project once it has been completed.

In addition to showing their analytical and creative skills, the students practice negotiation and time management (they work to a proposal agreed with the client) and learn to work as a group (never easy!) toward a high level objective. The projects are chosen so that models and frameworks taught within the course can be applied. All of this is underpinned with 30 hours of formal education and training in consultancy skills. This commitment to education and training is vitally important when addressing real issues that matter in real organisations. Our approach has been recognised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and our students were the first in the UK to have the opportunity to leave with a joint MBA and a Level 7 Diploma in Professional Consulting.

Example recent consultancy projects Marsh Risk Consulting www.uk.marsh.com A team of MBA General students studied the extremes of rise and fall in stock market prices in 250 businesses over a recent five year period and correlated these with company risk events, both internal and external – “Shareholder value: impact of risk events and relevance of intangible assets”. The students developed and negotiated a proposal to study this activity and, with regular contact and presentations delivered, met all deadlines. The client was “very excited” by its findings and the UK Managing Director commented “The feedback I have had from members of my team concerning the conduct and professionalism of the group running the research has been nothing but positive. Our clients regularly ask us to demonstrate the value that can be created by managing risk and this piece of work provides us with another perspective”.

Virgin Active www.virginactive.co.uk Students from both the General and Carbon MBAs studied carbon and energy management throughout Virgin’s Health Clubs across the UK. The team researched best practise in building management, analysed the company’s current property portfolio and made a series of innovative and practical recommendations to reduce energy consumption. Throughout the project, students remained focussed upon Virgin’s need to continue to deliver excellent customer experience with their Health Clubs whilst finding ways to achieve environmental sustainability.

Farrows www.farrows.co.uk The only graphic design agency in the UK to hold a Royal Warrant for providing services to the Royal Family asked a team of students to provide advice on succession planning within family businesses. After celebrating over 30 years of success, the Farrow family were planning a smooth transition of leadership to the next generation. Students interviewed Directors, customers and gained an indepth understanding of the company’s culture and values and were able to make practical recommendations to the client to help sustain the business during a critical period of change.

Adnams www.adnams.co.uk An MBA Strategic Carbon Management consultancy team in conjunction with key internal stakeholders addressed the issue of providing a measuring and reporting framework for carbon emissions and management. One of the key constraints was that the system be user friendly and easy to maintain whilst inspiring staff to be involved. The consultancy activity included a review of legislation and regulation, a series of linked spreadsheets for measuring and reporting and a friendly rivalry game – Carbon Combat – to inspire staff to take carbon management seriously.
