Practical Information

Michaela & Emma Michaela and Emma (mother and daughter) set up Woolpit Complementary to bring together practices that complement one another, in complementary healthcare. After having her own practice and observing other clinics, Michaela decided that there wasn’t a facility that provided a cohesive platform for individual practices in the area. So they set out to provide a centre that supports not only the patient or client, but the practitioner and therapist too. Emma had previously been working in London for three companies in the live music industry. Whilst she learnt invaluable skills, her desire to create a business of her own, that gave back to its community and resonated with her own morality took priority. Emma moved back to Suffolk to pursue her ambitions, which lead to form a partnership with her ‘dear ol’ grey haired mother’. . .

Michaela Storer BA (Hons), Lic Ac, MBAcC Michaela trained in Five Element Acupuncture for three years at the College of Traditional Acupuncture in Leamington Spa, followed by two years post graduate study in TCM at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading. She has been in practice for thirteen years and is the Senior Partner and Clinical Manager at Woolpit Complementary. Michaela treats a variety of conditions but is particularly interested in muscular-skeletal pain, chronic (long term) illness and facial problems. Michaela offers free, no obligation, consultations either by phone or in person. Micheala also provides facial acupuncture packages, under the banner of Nî Měilì, that are tailored to the individual, targeting specific skin conditions as well as overall conditioning of the skin. Nî Měilì [nee maylee] in traditional chinese translates to ‘You Beautiful’. Packages are available to both men and women and generally run for 12 weekly sessions. They include acupuncture, organic facial tea steaming - using both traditional and bespoke tea blends, facial masks and ultra sonic treatment. As part of an overall service provided by Woolpit Complementary, Michaela offers free 15 to 20 minute consultations that can relate to any health concerns or queries about treatments offered at the centre. A consultation can help you define what treatment might suit you best as well as provide direction or peace of mind, to those unsure of who to speak to.

Traditional Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine A growing and widely available body of evidence-based clinical research now shows that Traditional Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can safely and effectively treat a wide range of health problems, such as: Asthma ● Bronchitis ● Sinusitis ● Migraine ● Nausea ● Indigestion ● Constipation ● IBS High blood pressure Diabetes ● NeckShoulder / Back / Knee pain ● Arthritis (both Osteoarthritis and Rheumatiod Arthritis) ● Strains Sprain and other soft tissue injuries ● PMS ● Irregular or Painful Periods ● Menopausal Syndrome ● Fluid Retention ● Skin Disorders ● Neurological Disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease ● Alzheimer’s Disease ● Dementia ● Insomnia ● the sequelea of Cardiovascular accidents (CVA) such as Stroke ● In addition, acupuncture is used for addictions to Smoking, Alcohol and other substances. *

Traditional Acupuncture Traditional Acupuncture is a complete healthcare system based on ancient principles which date back over 2,500 years. Possibly recorded first by the Chinese, but was in use long before that by other cultures. Acupuncturists are trained to look at people as a complex energetic being, a bit like an energetic matrix, where qi, blood and vital essence flow through the body and organs maintaining our health and wellbeing. Their training takes many years to learn and are taught various skills, such as pulse diagnosis, tongue reading and palpation to help make their diagnosis. Acupuncturists focus less on particular symptoms, and deliberate more on imbalances and patterns of disharmony within the individual as a whole. Acupuncturists can then use Acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Moxibustion and massage techniques like Tui Na and Cupping to restore balance. This approach of making you ‘the best you can be’, then initiates your body’s own healing responses to facilitate health on all levels (body/mind/spirit), and thus make it an entirely holistic approach to wellness and not to be confused with the (dry needling) ‘trigger point’ style of acupuncture offered by Osteopaths and Physiotherapists. Chinese Herbal Medicine Chinese herbal medicine in this country is most widely used in the form of concentrated powders or raw herbs cooked at home, to make a tea. Chinese medicines sold in this country are verified before sale and contain no animal products or endangered plant species. Chinese herbal medicine is an excellent support to your Acupuncture or can be used as an individual treatment in its own right. Each prescription is tailored to your own requirements and is very safe to take under the supervision of your practitioner. It also complements western medicines very well and can help to reduce their side effects. All Acupuncturists practicing at Woolpit Complementary are a member of the British Acupuncture Council, bound by codes, ethics, safe practice and are committed to ongoing professional development. Physical Therapy Assessment, Manipulation & Exercises Whether poor health, sport or just everyday life leaves you with, posture problems, repetitive strain injury and / or stiff and sore joints and muscles – they could all be helped with the aid of physical therapy. The main aim of physical therapy is to loosen stiff and sore muscles, decrease pain, increase joint movement and muscle function for better flexibility and posture. At Woolpit Complementary, in association with Woolpit Osteopaths, we offer a wide selection of Physical Therapies: Osteopathy A core principle behind osteopathy is the idea that the body is an integrated and indivisible whole, and contains self-healing mechanisms that can be utilised as part of the treatment. No part of the body works, or can be considered, in isolation. Relevant psychological and social factors also form part of the process of patient diagnosis. It is suitable for almost anyone and can contribute to the treatment and management of a wide range of conditions. The key tools for osteopathic diagnosis include listening to the patient’s history, examining muscles and joints and observing movements. A wide range of non-invasive manual techniques such as deep tissue massage, joint articulation and manipulation are applied as required. Sports and Remedial Massage As well as the aims listed above, a skilfully applied massage improves circulation and lymphatic flow and has a relaxing effect on you, the client, should leave feeling well and refreshed. The ‘remedial’ in sports and remedial massage means applying manual therapy techniques to try to ‘remedy’ a problem; to relieve pain and to figure out how to prevent the problem reoccuring in the future. Following a thorough assessment, sports massage treatments are tailored to each individual to achieve the best results. To get the most out of your treatment it is advised to have massage on a regular basis. Physiotherapy Physiotherapy uses knowledge and skill to help diagnose symptoms through history taking and physical examination and thus set goals to help and treat the individual. Physiotherapists use a variety of physical techniques and modalities such as taping, exercise, massage and electrotherapy to help reduce pain and increase or improve movement. In addition, physiotherapists have knowledge and appreciation of psychological, social and cultural factors that may influence people differently. Woolpit Complementary offer additional physical therapies, such as Bowen Technique (see Karen’s profile), Swedish Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Aromatherapy Massage, Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Thai Yoga Massage. Please see additional literature for further details.

Svenja O’Connor LSSM (Dip) Level 5, MFHT Svenja has been interested in sporting activities like running, gym and horse riding throughout her life and has been involved in gym work since 1992. It was also around this time when Svenja suffered extremely intense migraines that would last up to 2 weeks at a time. When medication was not helping her pain, her GP recommended massage to help the tension in her upper back and neck, to try easing the headaches. It helped so much that it made Svenja a true believer in the powerful effect that a well applied massage can achieve. Svenja enjoyed working hard in business management, but her experience of massage led her to retrain as a sports and remedial massage therapist. Training on a subject that she already had so much experience of was a joy and has been working full time, as a Level 5 qualified massage therapist, since 2010. Svenja is also qualified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Pregnancy Massage and Organic Facials.

Counselling Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term, to help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing. Usually individuals choose to have counselling because they are experiencing difficulties and distress in their lives. Sometimes people can feel isolated at times, even where an individual has the most supportive family and friends, it can be difficult if not impossible to explain why, for example, they may be feeling anxious and/ or depressed. And it is often easier to talk about personal, family, or relationship issues with a person who is independent of friends and family. Other life issues and events which can be very difficult to deal with include bereavement, divorce, redundancy, health issues or bullying. However, you do not have to be in crisis or on the verge of one, before choosing to talk to someone. You may be experiencing underlying feelings of dissatisfaction with life in general, or be seeking balance in your life and spirituality. All of these reasons and more will bring individuals to counselling. All counsellors practising from Woolpit Complementary are registered with the BACP or UKCP and are bound by their code and ethics. Please see the next page to view individual profiles.

Chrissie Mines BA (Hons), MBACP accred Chrissie has been a counsellor since 2007, training to work with individuals of all ages. She has seen a wide range of both adult and younger clients, with many and varied concerns ranging from personal development and careers, to loss or bereavement, bullying and self harm, to depression and suicide. Chrissie has worked in schools and primary care, as well as private practice, taking referrals from 5 years old upwards. Her aim is to provide a space which enables exploration of private lives, somewhere open and honest, non-judgemental and understanding in which it is possible to explore all aspects of our life, gain a greater understanding and bring about change. This in turn can help us to feel more in control, develop a deeper sense of who we are and make us more able to respond positively to our lives. Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy is a skilled verbal communication, which helps direct a client’s imagination in such a way as to bring about intended alterations in sensations, perceptions, feelings, thoughts and behaviour. In a typical hypnotherapy session, the hypnotherapist will ask the client questions about previous medical history, general health and lifestyle. The hypnotherapist and client will decide together on the changes or goals that are desired. Hypnotherapy can be applied to a wide range of medical and psychological problems. Areas of application include anxiety and stress conditions, weight control, addictive behaviours (including smoking, alcohol and substance misuse) and confidence issues. Hypnotherapy is also used to enhance performance in several areas such as sport and public speaking. Hypnosis is an inward focusing of attention through which the demands of the outside world are switched off. It is a state of deep relaxation during which the critical analytical mind shuts off making the unconscious mind more accessible. During hypnosis you are not asleep and nothing can happen without your consent. You can hear everything being said and afterwards will usually remember all that has happened while in hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is a useful supplement to orthodox medicine and can achieve considerable success in its own right.

Podiatry Podiatry is a specialist area of healthcare which involves care and maintenance of the foot and lower limb conditions. A podiatrist’s aim is to improve the independence, mobility and general quality of life for each client. Podiatry can treat a whole host of foot and foot related conditions, including: Achillies Tendinopathy ● Arthritis ● Blisters ● Bunion ● Corns and Hard Skin ● Diabetes ● Fungal Toenail Infections ● Gout ● Plantar Fasciitis ● Heel Pain ● Ingrowing Toenails ● Metatarsalgia (Pain in the Ball of the Foot) ● Neuroma (or Morton’s Neuroma) ● Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD) ● Sports Injuries ● Toe Joint Pain ● Verrucaes Podiatrists can supply orthotics, which are tailor-made insoles, padding or arch supports. These are placed into your shoe to re-align your foot, take pressure off vulnerable areas of your foot or simply to make your shoes more comfortable. Even if your feet are generally in good condition, you might consider having a single session of podiatry to have the hard skin on your feet removed, toenails clipped or even to check if you are wearing the right kind of footware.

Kerry Kinnear MChS, HCPC registered Kerry decided to train as a podiatrist after years of working as a care and support worker. A job that she enjoyed very much but then felt the need to specialise in one specific area, within the roles required. Podiatry looks at any problems that are associated with the lower limb and foot, in adults and children. This could vary from nail care for people who find it hard to look after their own feet, to immediate pain relief from corns. Podiatrists also diagnose and treat joint pain, sports injuries which would benefit from orthotics. As well as nail surgery for ingrown toenails and verruca. People at high risk, for example with diabetes or rumatoid arthritis, are monitored for vascular supply and nerve pathology so that precautions can take place to prevent ulceration and amputation.

Reflexology Reflexology is a gentle non-invasive therapy which helps to restore a person to a more tranquil temperament, improve their mental condition, and enable the person to cope better with life’s demands. It encourages a generally healthier body by facilitating the proper functioning of the circulatory system thus enabling the supply of nutrients and oxygen to reach all cells of the body. If an area of the body is suffering from inflammation, tension or congestion the corresponding reflex points in the feet will be sensitive when pressure is applied. The body is able to remember injuries and operations just as we can within our memory, therefore it is possible for a trained reflexologist to pick up not only current conditions but also past conditions that have been suppressed and may remain unresolved. Reflexes on the feet and hands can highlight any areas of weakness or vulnerability that may give rise to problems in the future. Reflexology helps to give the body what it needs, this might be a reduction in the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, menopause, or even assistance in losing weight, it is all about bringing balance, harmony, and a sense of well-being to the body. Relaxation is the key to good health, and during a treatment many relaxation techniques are used. These techniques help release muscular tension to bring about a state of complete calmness.

Reproflexology Reproductive Reflexology, known as Reproflexology, is a specialised form of reflexology used to aid fertility, during the pre-conceptual care phase, the aim would be to correct any hormonal imbalances, improve physical conditions, manage stress levels, and correct any cycle irregularities. Treatment for Women Initially treatment for the female would entail weekly sessions working through one entire menstrual phase however, if there are irregularities in the cycle, such as clotting or an irregular cycle then weekly treatments would need to continue until the cycle is balanced. Once balanced, the female partner would then go on to an ‘actively trying to conceive’ program which would entail treating the female partner as close to ovulation as possible (week 2 of her cycle) and again 5-7 days post ovulation in order to enhance implantation (week 3 of her cycle). However it may be necessary to change this treatment plan if for example the female has low egg reserves or suffering from a condition such as endometriosis or PCOS. Treatment for Men Reproflexology can also be highly beneficial in helping a male to regain control of his own fertility journey. Initial treatment during pre-conceptual care for the male client would involve treating on a weekly basis and this would continue for 6 weeks; any general conditions in order to maintain good levels of health would also be taken into account. Also, Maternity Reflexology involves a gentle treatment using specialist techniques incorporating balancing of the endocrine system, lymphatic drainage. Linking reflexology and massage; it is an extremely safe treatment which can be carried out throughout the pregnancy.

Jo particularly enjoys working with clients suffering from stress and anxiety and can relate to the unhelpful feelings that come from feeling out of control. The results have been astounding to her clients and Jo feels very privileged to be working in a job she loves.

Thermography Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (Thermography) has been comprehensively researched for more than 30 years, and while it should not replace technologies such as Mammography, it has many valuable functions, namely: early detection of neovascular patterns (blood supply) – giving a physiological picture of the body. It provides improved detection for women with dense breasts. It can also serve as an adjunct to inconclusive mammograms. Thermography involves a procedure of taking a photographic image of a patient, producing a ‘map’ of the infrared patterns of the body. Any modification of this infrared map on images taken over months to years can indicate early signs of an abnormality. After taking a base thermogram and then regular series of thermograms, the patient’s physiological ‘map’ can be monitored and early signs of abnormality. However, thermography does not have the ability to locate a tumour. Consequently, breast Thermography’s role is an adjunct to mammography and physical examination, not a replacement. Janet van Dam MACCT, Dip CIVAS, LCH, MAR Janet is a Thermal Imaging Technician as well as a Nutritional Therapist and Homeopath. She is a firm believer in preventative healthcare. In Janet’s own words: “My mother was my inspiration for the work that I am doing now. She developed breast cancer in her late menopause at the age of 49 and sadly passed away soon after. This experience made me question if mammography was the only tool of detection and I decided that I wanted to have another way of keeping a check, something that is also free from radiation and pain.” Janet is a member of the American College of Clinical Thermography (ACCT) and trained with Meditherm. If you would like to find out more about Thermography, please contact Janet or call our reception for further 07539 366 283 or 01359 408 011 (reception) information.

Other Therapies Manual Lymphatic Drainage

with: Svenja O’Connor

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is an advanced massage therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels which carry substances vital to the defence of the body and removes waste products. MLD is both preventative and remedial. It can be relaxing; promote the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains and lessen pain. Can be used to treat certain chronic conditions: sinusitus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, acne and other skin conditions. It can relieve fluid congestion: swollen ankles, tired puffy eyes and swollen legs due to pregnancy. It’s also often found to be an effective component of the treatment and control of lymphoedema and assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency. As well as encouraging the healing of wounds and burns and improving the appearance of old scars.

Hopi Ear Candling

with: Charmaine Clarke

Ear candles are not candles as such, but hollow tubes made out of cotton or a mixture of cotton and linen (cotton flax). The fabric is stiffened when it is sprayed or dipped with beeswax. Good quality candles are natural products and their burning time varies depending on the candle type, but it is generally around 10 minutes per ear. A mild suction is created when the ear candle is lit. This and the heat of the released vapours circulating inside the ear, gently massage the eardrum and help to soften and loosen the earwax. The change of temperature leads to a change in pressure and expansion to help clear congestion. Gentle heat is experienced around the ear promoting the blood and lymph circulation.

Woolpit Complementary also provides the following therapies Nutritional Therapy, Hot Stone Massage, Thai Yoga Massage, Hot Stone Reflexology, Hypnobirthing, Indian Head Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Swedish Massage and Thai Foot Massage.
